Too many people, not just us here, but worldwide are being fed lies about Biden and other pet conservative affronts. My sister has a very close friend who has lived in Spain since the 1970’s shortly after college graduation. They talk at least weekly, and lately she has been describing how the Europeans are all disappointed in Biden.
This week she was incensed by articles that denounced a university for “firing” a professor for showing the Olivier “Othello”. She thought that was ridiculous that someone is punished for showing a great work of art and did not see any problem with the portrayal in blackface. My sister, who is not really in the loop about most publications, told me that she followed up by reading the articles her friend mentioned — and it turns out (surprise!) they were from Newsweek and the Daily Fail, publications not currently noted for their concern about accuracy or minorities. In fact the Olivier version was criticized at the time of its release at the height of the Civil Rights movement. And the professor was not fired, but removed from that particular class. Since the professor was Chinese and a musician who emigrated here when he was in his 20’s in 1982, he may not have really appreciated the problems with the production, especially since his focus was on the music for the film.
In any case, it does seem as though the persistent dishonest attacks here on CRT may be a very successful strategy in restoring the GOP to power and helping to place us under the control of a permanent white minority. As was previously pointed out here, although the white population of Texas is about 42%, they are managing through gerrymandering to hold 59% of the districts.

Yesterday I was at the Fred Meyers pharmacy to fill some prescriptions. Out of curiosity, I asked if they had any Covid-19 Home Testing Kits. To my surprise they did. Each kit contained 2 tests and they were limiting each customer to 2 kits at a time. Each kit cost about $15 so each test would be about $7.50. Not a bad price.
I purchased 2 kits ($33 total with tax) so I would be able to test my wife or myself if we ever felt any oncoming symptoms. Something handy to have in the medicine cabinet.
You may want to consider doing the same.
P.S. - The expiration date on the kits is 3/23/22 so they’re good for about 6 months.

An increase in incidents of parents being abusive and making threats to school employees over COVID prevention measures prompted the Estill County Board of Education on Thursday to issue a stern warning.
A “civility statement” from the school board said members were not trying to deny freedom of expression, but wanted to be clear about the possible consequences of parents abusing staff.
“In recent weeks, we have seen an increase of incidents where parents have been abusive to school employees and have made comments of a threatening nature. This is a direct violation of state law,” the statement said.
Estill Superintendent Jeff Saylor told the Herald-Leader the district had had phone calls and emails sent to principals and other school personnel about masking, quarantines and other coronavirus mitigation that he thinks crosses a line.

Doctors actually appreciate if you have lists of questions because it helps them and you manage your visit and you get the most out of your doctor’s time and expertise.

Here in the UK lateral-flow test kits are free (and made in China). Supposedly each person is only allowed one box of 7 tests every two weeks, in reality anyone could shop around different pharmacies and get as many boxes of tests as they want since there doesn’t seem to be any kind of central records-keeping.

People like this also think to themselves “my most important learning after all was outside the classroom and school,” forgetting that it came from being able to go to museums, musical performances, absorbing adult discussions about important matters, etc. School should be and often is an important window to kids who otherwise don’t have access. Any one of Jonathan Kozol’s books will bear that out. I have never forgotten one section of “Ordinary Resurrections” where he talks about how businesses come into the poor schools (mostly South Bronx) to “recruit” kids for low-level job futures. Not just seniors in high school—they try to put disadvantaged kids on a path to mediocrity early on—like, how dare a poor child dream of growing up to be a doctor or lawyer.
I remember reading that book while sitting in a coffee shop and crying my eyes out. People came over to see if I was OK, and it was difficult to explain that I was moved to tears by a non-fiction book about education.

What might be getting lost in this storm about “bringing balance to the Holocaust” is that the law inspiring this is aimed at anything that teaches about racism in America. Because America’s history of racism is “controversial” to many white people, and are as fragile as snowflakes about it.
And too many white folks would be JUST FINE with not talking about racist laws and racist structures against blacks PARTICULARLY when they operate in the present day.

I don’t know where or how or why or anything, but when I was in elementary school, oh, I was probably eight years old or so, in (then) white bread Concord, California, and I remember a guest speaker coming in and explaining ghettoes to us. You know, in kid friendly language-how they were created, and in particular, how roads and freeways created ghettoes. I don’t even KNOW how that happened…it may have been because I and several other kids were considered gifted, we were separated out from the other kids, and given what they called “enrichment.” This might have been part of that. But I can tell you I thought about it A LOT, especially after we moved to Houston, where there was a significant Black and Hispanic presence, but the schools were 95%+ white.
Oh, and for the record, the current mayor of Houston, Sylvester Turner, was one of the less than 5 percent at my high school.

when I was in junior high, the Gifted & Talented program had a combined Social Studies/History/English Lit class that was one of the great joys of my youth.
One semester, we studied up on Colonial History, the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Era, metaphor, allegory, analogy, constructing a drama in 3 acts — then went to the fancy schmancy downtown music center for matinees of The Crucible and Rhinocerus.
And of course, there was the class project where we rewrote Midsummer Night’s Dream in haiku and limerick. None of us were ever again intimidated by Shakespeare.
Our Russian history was incomplete; we started with the prehistoric Rus, went through Genghis & his hordes, the Czars (especially Peter and Catherine), 19th century music and literature… but time ran out before we ever got to the 20th Century.

We had an “academic bowl” in Indiana in which participating schools fielded three-man teams in four subjects (math, science, literature, and I can’t remember what the fourth subject was), and a four-man interdisciplinary squad. If you won at the local level in a given subject, that squad proceeded to state. Our junior year, our math team scored our first district victory, followed shortly by our first-ever state championship. The following year, we went 4/5 at the district level and 4/4 at the state level; I did not participate in the English team either year, as it was not my strong suit.

Now that I think about it, I think each individual was limited to two squads plus the interdisciplinary squad, to prevent a school’s participation from just being the four smartest people they could dig up. So I chose the subjects that were my natural fortes - not to say I was bad at English, but I was far more comfortable in math and science.

I really miss that show. Going to have to find out what service is streaming it these days and re-watch it.
I could not find it streaming anywhere, so bought the boxed set of DVDs. Didn’t regret it for a minute. I LOVED that show when it was first on and, for me at least, it held up fantastically 30 years later. (I always loved the bit of trivia about why Al was always smoking cigars, and found out that Dean Stockwell suggested it, figuring it was a great way to get free cigars for as long as the show ran.)

Minnesota is a state of comparable size, and we have 255 people in ICU and around 1,000 total hospitalized for COVID. This is a particularly heavy strain on our ICU capacity, but so far we still have open beds in every hospital region in the state.

That’s what I mean. I feel like someone has tried to sue someone else for looking at a website’s source code and failed. I mean, hell, the courts have even agreed that reverse engineering an application in order to build something compatible with it is legal. Viewing the source code is generally a part of that.

When they first rolled out one of those conservative twitter competitors (can’t remember which it was now but it didn’t last long) they had comments in the HTML with the admin credentials and server IPs - Anonymous was too embarrassed for them to even do anything.

In other news, we had a half dozen flies show up in our house. They like to circle in the middle of the family room. So when I finished my last call I grabbed my trusty Bug A-Salt rifle, gave it a good shake to ensure the salt was still loose and went to town. Knocked four of them out of the air and one that thought flying up to the ceiling would be safe. Thing holds about a tablespoon of salt and I’ve probably got over 100 shots and still haven’t had to refill it…took me about 20 shots this afternoon. Nice little spray - about 10” pattern at three feet.

Generally in Scotland about 85% of 16+ adults are fully vaccinated. The holdouts seem to be the Young Immortals, the 18 to 40 age group which are only 70% or so fully vaccinated with little sign of the number changing any time soon. Saying that there’s a push by the government to require vaccine passports for access to pubs, clubs, sporting events etc. and that may push the 18-40 age group vaccination numbers up a bit.

Minnesota is at 71% fully vaccinated, but the more populated areas are even higher than that; my county, the most populous county in MN, is at 76% fully vaccinated and well over 80% with one shot. Our state was one of the few that hit President Biden’s goal of 70% fully vaccinated by July 4, but since then, people completing their vaccinations have fallen off a cliff. There’s been a bit of a resurgence of people getting the first shot as the vaccine mandates have kicked in, so I surmise that the numbers will start to climb again.
I went to the dentist. They have just opened the lobby but are enforcing masks on everyone. The current law here in Colorado is for people to wear masks in medical establishments. Of course, there was a guy with a mask around his neck.

Travis Johnston, a Junior at Eagle High School, was having a workout session on Oct. 10 with his friends when he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital and resuscitated. After that, his body went into a coma.
He stayed in a coma for almost 48 hours before finally waking up. He’s experiencing severe delirium, and his short-term memory only lasts for 30 minutes right now.
Travis is expected to be in the hospital for at least another week while he’s monitored and tested further. Shara Martinho, a family friend, set up a GoFundMe page to help with the Johnston family’s expenses.
“They have performed test after test and still do not have answers as to what exactly may have caused this,” Martinho said. “The medical expenses and the time his family is having to take off work are quickly adding up.”

I watched it when it was first on but eventually lost interest late in the series (but cannot recall exactly what transpired) when it veered more to his leaps being guided through religion rather than science. I wanted science fiction.
