The often untold story of cleaning up dead kaiju finally coming to theaters next year | SoraNews24 -Japan News-

soranews24.com

I’m thinking that some real life experiments didn’t go so well:

Fifty years ago, Oregon exploded a whale in a burst that ‘blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds’

On a clear November day in 1970 in Florence, Ore., state highway engineers lit 20 cases of dynamite to blow apart a 45-foot sperm whale carcass that had washed up on the beach and festered for three days.

…snip…

The engineers intended for the eight-ton carcass to be thrown into the ocean in pieces. Instead, chunks of flesh flew toward the beachside town and fell from the sky, crushing a car a quarter-mile away and raining down on a crowd who had gathered to watch the pyrotechnics.

…snip…

Linnman and cameraman Doug Brazil, who had arrived at the beach near the midpoint of Oregon’s coastline with cameras in hand, captured the moment the excited crowd suddenly realized the rancid blubber that had propelled into the air would soon plummet back onto their heads.

In other local DC news, one of the escaped zebras that has been roaming the Prince George County, Maryland area, has died. Apparently it was caught in an illegal snare trap.

Originally, 5 zebras were reported to have escaped back in August, but authorities now say that only 3 got out.

One of the zebras that escaped from a Prince George’s County farm in August, has been found dead.

Maryland Natural Resources Police spokeswoman Lauren Moses said the animal was found Sept. 16 in a snare trap near a field.

Police responded to the scene along Duley Station Road in Upper Marlboro, just a few miles from the farm where the animals came from.

Moses said, at this point, investigators don’t know who placed the snare trap there, but those kind of traps are illegal in Prince George’s County.

It’s bad when you have friends who each want you to “check this out” only to find out it’s the same damned clip/meme/joke/etc that everybody in the world has seen a dozen times because they think you’re the one person who hasn’t and they want a front row seat to your reaction.

It’s fucking ridiculous when thousands of total strangers blow up your timeline with the same damned clip going “YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!” as though you owe them a unique impression every time. And then get fucking snippy when you tell them to please stop.

This now well viewed tweet:

… is ripe for misinterpretation.

The key here is that the administrator was responding to Texas legislature bill 3979.

legiscan.com

It’s all part of the ideological war.

Notice this in the bill is the part to combat the boogeyman of CRT:

(4) a teacher, administrator, or other employee of a
state agency, school district, or open-enrollment charter school
may not: […]
(B) require or make part of a course the concept
that:

[…]
(vi) an individual, by virtue of the
individual’s race or sex, bears responsibility for actions
[…]

(viii) meritocracy or traits such as a hard
work ethic are racist or sexist or were created by members of a
particular race to oppress members of another race;

(ix) the advent of slavery in the territory
that is now the United States constituted the true founding of the
United States; or
committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex;

(x) with respect to their relationship to
American values, slavery and racism are anything other than
deviations from, betrayals of, or failures to live up to, the
authentic founding principles of the United States, which include
liberty and equality; and
(C) require an understanding of The 1619 Project.

As usual, when already malicious legislators make overly-broad and/or overly-intrusive bills and laws, the masses of people affected have to interpret how to handle said burdens.

Every time you go to a store there’s a bar code scanned, by a laser.

We’ve had the ability to make scanners that can detect images for quite some time.

One could automate baseball calls.

Whether a guy swings his bat past a line is something that isn’t too difficult to detect. And if one wanted to do so, one could embed a sensor in the end of every bat.

Iirc you are down in the Tidewater area. Any thoughts on what you have been seeing down there?

What I see up in the Northern Virginia area is that several counties, particularly Loudoun and Prince William (home of Corey Stewart) seem to be falling for the GQP culture wars. There is even an uncomfortable number of Youngkin signs in Western Fairfax County where I live.

And I have heard the same thing about the “white flight” counties around Richmond.

I very much hate hearing it too. At the recent primary, one of the State Senators and I exchanged memories of what it was like when the area was deep red. I really do not want to see that again.

Youngkin is trying to thread the needle by keeping the GQP base (the True Believers) and attracting enough disaffected voters to win.

From my perspective, the GQP has been throwing a lot of stuff at the wall trying to see what will stick. CRT as shorthand for the culture wars seems to be their best option at the moment. It seems to play on the disaffected while distracting them from tfg.

The polling seems to indicate that the Dems have not yet worked out how to counter this beyond reminding folks of tfg. (Which is what the WashPost was pointing out.)

The current strategy of the Dems, (and of the tfg who keeps trying to reassert himself) is to remind everybody of the tfg. It may not be enough.

Ladies comprise a significant and very active percentage of the Northern Virginia population. I have not seen them heavily involved in the current election. And I know that the Dems have been working hard to energize them.

Hampton Roads has been pretty red for a long while. You might have heard of my former rep here in the 2nd District, a shitstain by the name of Scott Taylor. He lost his office during the ‘18 wave election in part because word got out in the weeks before the election that his office had been caught trying to get a third party candidate on the ballot to split the Dem vote. Then he made noises in ‘19 that he’d run against Tim Kaine, only to then decide (probably due to poor polling) to try and fail to get back his old seat by riding Trump’s (non-existent) coattails.

Realistically, it should be remembered that McAuliffe was pretty much counted out the first time he ran for the governor’s mansion, with all the talk about how he was “boring” compared to the charismatic dynamo that was Ken “Cucci” Cuccinelli. And that election was projected to be a nail-biter as well, with a lot of pundits predicting Cucci would win on a platform of abortion bans and race-baiting.

The GOP are masters at distorting positions and ideas and persuading voters that the other side is the enemy. If you keeping on hearing lies from multiple sources without counterbalancing truths, you can easily be persuaded that lies are truth, war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. It is not just that CRT has been demonized but there is a constant campaign to call anything critical of racism racist and CRT.

Thanks to the EC, Trump won in 2016 and came within 45,000 votes of winning again in 2020. Our democracy is fragile, with a flawed Constitution that too often works against our best interests. McConnell could have, at any time, stopped this descent into fascism, but he has always been committed to power rather than freedom and equality. Our democracy is slowly slipping away and Manchin and Sinema do not appreciate this — nor do most Democrats. But when the media fails constantly to understand this (or doesn’t care), the task of preserving our nation seems increasingly to be on the road to failure.

re: #48 ckkatz

I like your viewpoint much more than what I am seeing. That’s for certain!

I’d advise taking it with a grain of salt, because while I have few illusions about my own district turning blue (it hasn’t in a gov race in a long awhile), there’s nothing that says a snake like Yongkin couldn’t have finally hit upon the formula that helps the VA GQP crack Northern Virginia. Not that it’s a new formula, he’s a “aw, shucks” asshole running as a “moderate” and trying to put as much distance between himself and the last presidential loser while still retaining as much support from the party base as he can.

Cucci tried the Trump strategy of boosting party turnout and lost by a (relatively) narrow margin while Gillespie yoked himself to Trump a year after the previous presidential election and got crucified for the effort. Youngkin seems to be trying desperately to chart a middle course that the VA GQP will no doubt look to follow next year if he’s successful.

Targetpractice  Oct 14, 2021 • 11:16:05pm

Something that the media are not giving much air time when screaming about how it’s a “close” race: At no time in the past three months has Yongkin held the lead or been above 50% in the polls. In fact, the polls have been pretty stable for the past month with McAuliffe holding a 2-3% lead. But facts like those are inconvenient to the “horse race” narrative that pundits push every election for fear of being seen as “biased” if they report the bleedin’ obvious.

re: #49 Targetpractice

Your memory is very good. There certainly was a lot more media drama during the past few Va governor elections than was justified in the end.

I voted at the Fairfax County Government Center last week. The lines were extremely short. And the current voter engagement seems fairly small.

When I voted during the 2020 Presidential election, the voting lines at the Govt Center were huge. Out the doors and almost to the end of the very large parking lot.

I am really hoping that the wingnut screamers are a very shallow astro-turf this time too.

53
Targetpractice  Oct 14, 2021 • 11:31:49pm

Another thing to bear in mind about VA: The pundits played it up as a “bellweather” in ‘17 about Trump and his influence, insisting that the results of not only the gubernatorial election by the state rep elections would give a glimpse of what the GQP might expect the following November. The VA GQP tried to play up their support of Trump and boost party voter numbers.

So what happened when they got crushed at the polls and the overall result of the night was an electoral bloodbath that not only saw the Dems hold the governor’s mansion but take both houses of the General Assembly for the first time in years? A couple of days of mumbling from the media about how VA is “unique” before moving on to telling us all that the GQP was gonna carry the day the following November on a platform of tax cuts and immigration.

The real wildcard in the race is the Texas anti-choice law. The question is will the suburban women look at this as a GOP threat to their rights, especially given the Federal Appeals Court has allowed the law to remain in effect while they are considering it. If there is anything that might invigorate turnout against the GOP, it is this legislation and the court’s refusal to stop it.

I’m less interested in the governor’s mansion than I am in the General Assembly this go-around, largely because the VA Dems are defending their majority in the House of Delegates and a bad night could mean gridlock even if Terry carries the election. On the other hand, if suburban women think that a divided Assembly means less chance of abortion being under attack here in VA, they might be willing to give Youngkin their votes.

The key here is that the administrator was responding to Texas legislature bill 3979.

It’s all part of the ideological war.

Notice this in the bill is the part to combat the boogeyman of CRT:

As usual, when already malicious legislators make overly-broad and/or overly-intrusive bills and laws, the masses of people affected have to interpret how to handle said burdens.

And the Swedish School authority is under heavy fire for a similar footbullet, for issuing poorly worded guidelines to teach media literacy, source criticism and similar, involving … *drumroll* … holocaust denial…

I love stuff like this. it’s like a little time capsule. I have still have a large paperback called the Wrath of Agnes that is a picture history of the great Wilkes Barre flood of 1972. The flood itself is less interesting than looking at the people—the hairstyles, the clothing. It’s 1972, so people don’t look radically different, but little old ladies, for instance, aren’t wandering around jean shorts or pants. They’re all in little “grandmother” outfits with various hair wraps to protect hair salon work-ups from rain. The college kids all look like college kids, but even there, while many are in jeans, there’s just kind of a different vibe to the clothes. You don’t see kids walking around in loafers and cargo shorts for instance. I’m sure that look existed, but it just didn’t seem to be the fad of that time period. The cars are fun, because there are a ton of pretty non-descript automobiles of the late 60’s-early 70’s, but there are also the remnants of vehicles driving around that had been on the road since sometime in the 50’s.

Trump’s stooge in the PA Senate Race not having things go his way!

A judge is refusing to seal records and proceedings in the ongoing custody battle involving Sean Parnell, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

The judge, in his Thursday ruling, also rejected Parnell’s request to bar his wife from talking about past restraining orders she had sought against him.

Parnell had made the requests after a rival for the Republican nomination, Jeff Bartos, and an associated super PAC attacked Parnell over the matter, calling him “unelectable.”

Parnell’s campaign has disputed the notion that the restraining orders sought by Laurie Parnell in the contentious divorce case were evidence of any wrongdoing. Neither lasted more than a matter of days.

I can think of nothing better than being able to take leave to bond with a child for a period of time to help them during critical months, especially when child care costs are insane. In NYC metro area, the typical day care cost is around $1,500 a month.

If you tried to pay a nanny for a 40 hour week at $15 an hour, you’d be looking at $600 a week or $2400 a month. It’s little wonder many people decide to be stay at home parents because they can’t afford to work and send their kid to day care. Something has to give.

And if you’re a single parent, what are your choices? It’s even worse.

So right wingers attack Buttigieg because he’s taking FMLA? Fuck these right wing lunatics with a rusty pitchfork sideways. He’s not only entitled to the FMLA, but it’s something we should encourage because there’s nothing more important than caring for your family.

It’s become all too abundantly clear that far too many right wingers are sociopaths who can’t and wont care about anyone else, including family.

He’s mocking Buttigieg because he thinks child care is for women, which is, frankly, a horrendously misogynistic take on the world. For most of human history, there has not been clearly gender-defined roles for parenting; men and women were expected to have equal influence and put equal effort in parenting. It’s literally only the war and post-war generations of the 20th Century, where our soldiers went to war (and then later to work) while the mothers stayed home and cared for the kids, that defined this as the norm.

Putin and his cronies aren’t going to change their actions one bit. They don’t care how many Russians die from covid. They just want to deny the severity of the pandemic across their country, even though excess mortality tells the tale (it’s the great equalizer and shows just how devastating covid19 has truly been worldwide and across the US).

We know what we’d expect in a given year as deaths are relatively constant absent a major pandemic. With covid19, we got that pandemic condition, and deaths rose significantly worldwide. Countries like India have undercounted deaths by a factor of 10 as most people don’t go to hospitals to die - they die at home. That means they also infected many of the people caring for them in their last hours and days. It’s one of the reasons why crematoria were overwhelmed by bodies even as the govt there was claiming they had it under control.

Russia’s playing a similar game. So too are other countries (and some states like Florida and Texas) where they’re trying to game the numbers to appear better than they actually did. The politics is getting in the way of public health.

As a stay-at-home dad, I was the primary caregiver for our children. I mentioned the economic reasons a few days back (the cost of daycare being more than what my working would add to the family’s finances, tending to a child on the spectrum). There was also the lack of an extended family support system for us as outsiders far, far away from our respective families. My parents could count on our relatives to help out, if needed. The clannish nature of Appalachian society runs on extended familial relationships. We could not rely on that for a back-up.

Reality does care. Spewing racist garbage with no explicit use of obscenities or direct attacks, but surreptitiously, using code words such as MAGA, CRT, and birtherism, can be quite successful at persuading others to follow your lead and converting them to your way of thinking. The worst offenders will rise up in indignation and claim they are not racist, while they promote every subtle racist trope imaginable. Hello Vaxxed people. Honest question here (as I fully support your decision to get vaxxed), how do you feel when showing your vaxx passport knowing it excludes people?

It is a voluntary self-exclusion that you are free to end almost any time and free of charge.

I saw the original tweet as a quote tweet from @questauthority. In replies to his response, there were people saying things such as, “How do you feel when you present your driver’s license at a bar, knowing it excludes people?” Or, “How do you feel when you present your USA passport at the border, knowing it excludes people?” The idea that a vaccine passport should somehow be offensive because it hurts the fee-fees of the willfully stupid is laughable.

Bee on Golden Yarrow

Just someone doing their job and not complaining about it. Most of my life I was on red alert when a bee was nearby. We worried about getting stung or worse - getting stung to death by “Africanized” bees. After a few years observing them close up - I do not think twice about remaining quiet and calm in their presence. Watching them in the yard is a small pleasure.

Capitol cop indicted for obstruction of justice after he allegedly tipped off MAGA rioter on Facebook

A veteran of the Capitol Police has been indicted for obstructing justice after he allegedly tipped off a Trump supporter on Facebook and advised him to take down photos he posted of himself at the MAGA riot.

a newly unsealed indictment charges that U.S. Capitol Police Office Michael Angelo Riley went on Facebook the day after the Capitol riots and advised an unidentified rioter to remove photos he’d posted of himself at the siege.

“Hey I’m a Capitol Police officer who agrees with your political stance,” Riley allegedly wrote. “Take down the part about being in the building they are currently investigating and everyone who was in the building is going to be charged. Just looking out!”

Prosecutors say that this was the first time that Riley and the rioter had been in contact one another, although Riley mysteriously sent the rioter a friend request days earlier. According to prosecutors, both Riley and the rioter “were avid fisherman and members of fishing-related Facebook groups.”

re: #196 jeffreyw

Heh, years ago I spent a couple of summers working at a Boy Scout Camp in NorthWestern Pa. One summer the cooks adopted a couple of orphaned raccoon cubs. At the time it was legal to keep raccoons as pets in Pa.

For the “end of the summer” group photo, two of the cooks decided to have the raccoons on their shoulders. They figured that the raccoons would really look good on their cook white uniforms.

This was not a wise move.

With 70 camp employees, most of them late-teenage boys running around prior to the photo, the raccoons quickly got uncomfortable. And immediately went to the highest place they could find and got a firm grip there.

This highest spot happened to be the top of the afore-mentioned cooks’ heads. And, of course, the raccoons were not exactly potty trained.

Eventually the raccoons were coaxed down without too much damage to the cooks. The formerly white uniforms were changed and the pictures were taken.

I’m not a Southern Baptist, but the SBC is just an example of the rot that is in Evangelicalism, and why it should just burn down. First because of the child sex abuse, then because of the second class status of women, then because people of color are expected to defer to white men, then because LGBTQIA people are seen as the worst sinners ever and then because disabled people are invisible. “Mommy, what are those people across the street doing?”
“Making asses out of themselves in public, honey. Don’t pay any attention to them, they’ll go away on their own.”
“Oh, so they’re Republicans?”
“Good job, honey. You’re very smart.”
“Mommy, when I grow up, I don’t wanna be anything like those people.”
*sniffle* “I’m so proud.”

brief review of the tonemaster twin reverb after a day: this is just really, really fine. It is so obviously a pro-level amp that even I, a guitar tyro, can tell. I’m practicing clean stuff, like arpeggiated chords, with a bit of reverb on, and the sound coming back at me is just so damned authentic. I mean, yes, of course you can get perfectly decent clean tones out of a boss katana, but the twin reverb just sounds so rich, so much like it has this incredibly generous amount of room that I could make use of, if I didn’t live in an apartment and have to keep the volume at basically nothing louder than 5w on the attenuator in back. It so makes me want to just pick up the guitar and play. I think I want to use my musician rewards points on the santa ana overdrive pedal. we’ll see. maybe if i can find one open box.

I was very happy to see my daughter registered to vote as a Democrat.

About f-ing time. Give me that jab baby.

FDA Panel Endorses Booster Shot For J&J COVID-19 Vaccine

The FDA’s advisory panel voted unanimously that a booster should be offered without setting a firm time. The advisers cited growing worry that recipients of J&J’s vaccination seem to be less protected than people who got two-dose Pfizer or Moderna options — and that most got that single dose many months ago.

That bolded part does concern me a bit though.

Most of that is the very expensive booze they chose to buy. They’re not complaining, they’re showing off.

Don’t these people bother to check the prices before they order?

Though looking at the bill, we notice that £30,600 of that tab was for drinks: three bottles of Petrus (£9000+) and one of Dom P (£1620), so likely “no”….

Not sure Wimpy’s stocks too much Ch. Petrus.

“Local rich guy SHOCKED and OUTRAGED by how much he had to spend to get top-quality booze that nobody else can afford, wishes his habit of being elite wasn’t so expensive.”

To keep up with the previous theme, which had me giggling in politically incorrect nostalgia,

Why did the elephants paint their toenails red?
To hide in the strawberry patch
Have you ever seen an elephant in a strawberry patch?
See, it works.

Why do they tell tourists not to walk through the jungle between the hours of four and five?
That’s when the elephants jump out of the trees.
What is the dark stuff between an elephant’s toes?
Slow tourists

Heh, years ago I spent a couple of summers working at a Boy Scout Camp in NorthWestern Pa. One summer the cooks adopted a couple of orphaned raccoon cubs. At the time it was legal to keep raccoons as pets in Pa.

[snip]

Would that camp happen to have been in Carlton, PA? My uncle in Cochranton lived just down the road from the Boy Scout camp there.

re: #208 The Pie Overlord!

Would a viable “opposing” viewpoint be having the students read the minutes of the Wannsee Conference so that they could see what *boring* monsters the Nazis were.

Perhaps with a side helping of showing their pettiness and back-biting as a factor in Germany doing so poorly in World War 2?
