Went to see AJ Croce tonight playing his dad’s music and a whole lot more of his own. Fantastic piano player and songwriter. Played a couple of songs he wrote with Leon Russell. Played a ragtime jam into Billy Preston’s ‘Will it go round in circles’ that was off the fucking hook.

Super fun and intimate show at a winery. Everyone vaccinated and still wearing masks.

These politicians also like it when people get completely cynical and decide that they’re all the same and all crooks and check out.

Trying to work with Manchin on his “reasons” for opposing BBB is just going to lead to more and more incoherent blather like his recent statement, because that’s just eyewash. Better to make people understand he’s stuffing his pockets.

Successful launch, booster stage and fairing separated successfully, now in burn for Earth orbit prior to heading out in the black.

It’s a nice sunny Saturday morning here in Yurp, so easy for me to watch. During Trump’s Reign of Error, mornings were the quiet time before the daily insanity started around 1pm Central European Time, so at least we got some mental rest.

Jonathon Chait’s theories on what Sinema wants in the Senate. Here’s the first:

1. She’s the Glenn Greenwald of senators.

The evidence: Sinema used to hate Democrats and liberals from the left, self-identifying as a socialist and running as a Green Party member. Now she hates them from the right. The consistent theme in her career is a contempt for the hard, unglamorous work of programmatic liberalism.

Police departments around the U.S. that are requiring officers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 are facing pockets of resistance that some fear could leave law enforcement shorthanded.

Morning Lizardim.

I’m guessing that there’s a geographical factor — didn’t New York City report something closer to 1% of resisters?

Also, this seems to me to be an excellent way to weed out the really (potentially) bad cops. Being antivax has a high correlation with being the sort to support — or be — insurrectionists. A shortage of officers is better than having potential backstabbers among the ranks.

People who are too delusional to vaccinate are not sensible enough to stay away from a conference where others are likely to have the same problem.

Rob Skiba — said to have come home from a Christian-centric Take On The World conference in August not feeling well — was also a COVID vaccine skeptic, the Daily Beast reports. It was from that conference he allegedly posted a message on Facebook noting that “within I’d say 2 to 3 years or so” we’ll know whether vaccines were a solution or a problem.

He had in the past talked about his conspiracy theory that vaccines are the mark of the beast and said that there would be a fake pandemic to force everyone to take the mark. Anyone dumb enough to believe that nonsense was going to become a problem in a pandemic.

People dumb enough to believe this walk among us, and they vote. Not this particular dummy of course.

As the article points out, it’s similar as trying to escape religious cults. I have an acquaintance who, after his wife (my best friend) passed away, found a home with the NRA — and this home seems to provide the same support and worldview as the Q-Anon cult. He has a PhD in history and theoretically should know better but he’s an outright racist whose only focus is on protecting gun rights for white people. It’s not that he loves Trump but he hates Democrats. The one topic on which he dissented from the GOP was the tax cut for the rich; his very vocal attacks could have been written by Bernie Sanders.

Well, exactly - because the world is always changing. As I said, I was able to do the supposedly “traditional” family because I didn’t have to deal with student loans, but that is a huge burden for a lot of today’s young people. It absolutely has an impact in how families have to be managed these days.

My mom taught me all the homemaking skills in case I ended up as a bachelor, but I can still put them to good use to take care of my wife when she needs a break.

Boycott Publix. Make this parasite testify before the 1/6 Committee!

A wealthy Trump donor who helped finance the rally in Washington on Jan. 6 also gave $150,000 to the nonprofit arm of the Republican Attorneys General Association, records show, funds that a person familiar with the contribution said were intended in part to promote the rally. The nonprofit organization paid for a robocall touting a march that afternoon to the U.S. Capitol to “call on Congress to stop the steal.”

On Dec. 29, Julie Jenkins Fancelli, daughter of the founder of the Publix grocery store chain, gave the previously undisclosed contribution to RAGA’s nonprofit Rule of Law Defense Fund, or RLDF, records reviewed by The Washington Post show. On the same day, the records show that Fancelli gave $300,000 to Women for America First, the “Stop the Steal” group that obtained a permit for the rally featuring former president Donald Trump.

Funding for the events in Washington that day is a focus of the House select committee investigating the violent riot at the U.S. Capitol that followed the rally. The panel is also interested in the role state officials, including attorneys general, played in encouraging people to go to Washington on Jan. 6 and in supporting Trump’s efforts to overturn the election, according to people familiar with the committee’s work.

This is why we need to reinstate a 90% Inheritance Tax on the wealthy.

One thing Shatner’s space flight taught us is that astronauts no longer need several months of physical conditioning to safely make the journey.

One ride on SpaceX might kill him. The G forces, then microgravity then re-entry are a whole other ball game compared to that 12-minute tourist glimpse.

Part of the plot is this uber wealthy guy had funded the SETI program that found the signal. Late in the movie he dies as above. Somehow in Hollywood the despite the G forces of getting to orbit and only after that the gentility of weightlessness kept this guy alive longer.

Seems like fewer men and women have kitchen skills among the young. If you have a tiny kitchen it’s harder to get it all done. And it’s so much easier to cook dinner if you are not both just home from the commute at 7.

and although Germany i very progressive on matters like maternity/paternity leave for parents (three years, which the partners can split up any way they choose), it is overwhelmingly the women to take it.

We had this washing machine that had an alarm to signal when it was done. But the alarm does not go off when you open the door, you have to switch it off separately, which you often don’t notice until you have a basket of clothes in your hands to set down.

I realized that this system was probably designed by some engineer who never did a load of laundry on his own ever.

When we were newly married, Wife’s relatives from Deepest Tennessee came for their first visit. She was in the trailer, I was outside grilling burgers for lunch. The leader of the pack went in and said to Wife: “In all my born days, I never thought I’d see a man turn a hand to cookin’”.

Further to the north, grilling is seen as a “manly” activity, and if you don’t have a barbecue and the skill to use it, you’re seen as somewhat of a disappointment. Funny how these things are regional, or perhaps more generational; I would imagine that my father’s father probably felt the way your feral Tennesseean did.

I see a heck of a lot more men in the grocery stores (and at laundromats) than I did as a kid. But the ability to cook in the general population has definitely taken a fall.

Dad did a great turkey outside, and cooked Sunday brunch. Mom cooked for 7 kids. Learning how to cook for 1 or 2 people took a long time. Then I totally lost the ability to cook when I got my head injury.

Mrs. Fish had the same problem with cooking way too much, and we would fairly frequently have to toss leftovers. Me, I grew up with one sister, and my mom never cooked a huge meal unless the extended family was coming over. Scaling up recipes takes some weird brain bending, and I frequently undercook large dishes.

I grilled a turkey breast a few days ago. It triggered discussion of how I’ve cooked all holiday birds on a Webber knockoff we bought in the Yongsan PX in 1980. It’s definitely showing the mileage (about 36,000). I keep looking at new Webbers at Lowe’s, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t work if I disrespect the old grill’s mana.

I learned to do it all - cook, clean, shop, laundry etc. About the only household skill I never mastered was sewing. I can fix a button in a pinch or hem trousers in a functional fashion but in neither case will it look pretty.

However my spouse now does the laundry. While I have a rep for being particular and somewhat fussy with laundry, they are über particular and fussy so I relinquish that chore in order to keep the peace.

I took a 3 week ‘sewing’ class in high school. My best friend could make clothes that she would wear. I made a pair of pants that I wore, but it was back in the day of low-riding bell bottoms. I am so lucky that nobody at school had a camera.

It is dictated by the limitations of production. Aliens tend to be humanoid, planets have breathable air that is not laden with pathogens and gravity is applied as it works on Earth because everything is filmed on Earth.
