Computers are designed and built to perform repetitive tasks at an extremely high speed. They are extremely efficient at this. However, when you break it down, the complex interactions of humans are not repetitive, they are constantly changing. Trying to manage hate speech with an algorithm is nothing more than a cheap cop-out to avoid paying the army of people they’d need to do the job properly. I’m sure that eventually, it’ll be possible to build AIs that are efficient at evolving and adapting to changes in patterns, but it’ll be a very long time before then, and even longer before they approach the ability of humans to do the job, if ever.

One of the really infuriating things about this is that Papon essentially got away with it, and kept getting away with shit until he finally died of old age (97) in 2007. I addressed this back in August:
Maurice Papon was head of the Paris police at the time of the 1961 massacre, and during a 1962 incident in which 9 people were killed. He was one of those very shady characters who kept reappearing, like bad pennies, in the French establishment for decades after World War II.
During the war, he had been police prefect in Bourdeaux and was responsible for the roundup and deportation of 1620 Jews, almost none of whom survived. He avoided being charged for that until 1998, when he was 88 years old. He served two years in prison and was paroled for “old age” (90). He finally kicked off in 2007 at age 97.
Before that, he had been forced out of the police after the very suspicious disappearance of Moroccan exile Mehdi ben Barka in 1965. Papon was believed to have cooperated with Moroccan intelligence officials to permit the hit on French soil.
With Nazi collaboration, a couple of massacres, and a gangland style hit on his record, one might be forgiven for thinking that would be the end of him, at least as a responsible official. Not so. DeGaulle appointed him head of Sud Aviation, which had the French end of the Concorde development, even though he had no experience with aviation. He was eventually elected to the National Assembly. He later served as Budget Minister for President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in the 1980s. Justice finally caught up with him, sort of, thanks to an article in Le Canard Enchaîné, and diligent work by Nazi hunter Serge Klarsfeld.

Selling the Yamaha CP88 to compensate for the fairly extravagant Ultra Telecaster in Texas Tea and then the tonemaster twin reverb. My guess is that FB is weary of actually getting rid of racist and extremist content because it would cost them too much money. I would be shocked if they actually didn’t cripple their AI setup to not be too good at it.

Proponents of raising the Nebraska minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026 are seeking a ballot initiative to give the voters a choice.
The Raise the Wage Nebraska Coalition is seeking more than 87,000 signatures they say are needed to qualify for the November 2022 ballot. This would allow voters to decide whether the state should increase the minimum wage from the current $9 per hour.
State senators Megan Hunt from the 8th District and Terrell McKinney from the 11th District are part of the Raise the Wage Nebraska Coalition. McKinney delivered paperwork to the Nebraska Secretary of State office on Monday to get the process rolling.

Late Friday night, a woman named Kathleen Jenkins made a startling claim on Twitter.
Responding to a tweet that Bobette Riales had posted in 2017, Jenkins said that she too had been raped by Danny Masterson and had been too afraid to talk about it.
We spoke with Jenkins yesterday, and she said that she had been completely unaware that there had been other women making allegations against Masterson until this week.
“I still work in film, and I just work all day and come home and I don’t really read the news,” she says. But last month, a niece called her from a bar saying that she suspected she’d been “roofied” — that someone had put a “date rape” drug in her drink.
“She was with her friends and so it was all right,” Jenkins says, but it got her thinking about something she had remembered happening to her more than 20 years ago.
This week, she says, she entered Danny Masterson’s name in a search engine for the first time, and she was stunned to see all of the news stories about rape allegations against him.
Masterson is awaiting trial that could put him in prison for 45 years to life if he’s found guilty of violently raping three women in incidents that happened between 2001 and 2003. Masterson has said he’s innocent of the charges, and he’s being represented by defense attorney Tom Mesereau.
We first broke the news in 2017 that the three women had gone to the LAPD with their allegations, and since then we reported that a total of seven women had been interviewed in the investigation.
In her charging papers, former Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey indicated that besides the three women whose allegations she was charging Masterson under, there were two additional women whose allegations were not being included. One of them was Riales, and the other woman’s allegations were from 1996.
Oh, and on top of the criminal case, there’s a civil case being bounced back and forth through the California courts, with the courts saying that the women have to go through Scientology’s “arbitration system” (which is a joke) to get at Masterson and Scientology for monetary damages. Even if they don’t believe in Scientology.

Under Canada’s so-called “Less Complex Claims” process for asylum, a religious person can claim asylum for persecution, but atheists cannot.
This was brought to the fore in 2011 when a Pakistani atheist teenager was threatened with death over religion. He was beaten by five men, his fingers cut off, and his kidnappers burned “repent” into his arm.
When he explained to his parents what happened after he escaped, his parents disowned him and threw him out.
The Karachi police launched an investigation, not to find his kidnappers, but his atheist friends. They were beaten and tortured by the police, and one remains in jail awaiting the death penalty.
He went into hiding, and the Centre for Inquiry helped smuggle him out to Canada. The UN High Commissioner on Refugees declared him to be a refugee in 2019.
As of yet, Canada has not approved his asylum claim, and he fears deportation back to Pakistan.
Atheist persecution is not grounds for asylum in Canada or the United States.
CFI Canada, Humanist Canada, and Secular Connexion Séculière presented a petition to Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (Beaches—East York, Ontario) on June 22, 2021. It has not yet been taken up. The petition received about five times the number required for consideration by the House of Commons.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The federal government is funding organizations that illegally discriminate against LGBTQ candidates to become foster care parents for unaccompanied refugee children, a lawsuit filed Wednesday alleges.
According to the 29-page complaint, Kelly Easter has been turned away twice from fostering a migrant child in the federal foster care program while living in Nashville, Tennessee.
The lawsuit alleges that Michigan-based Bethany Christian Services refused to permit Easter to be a foster parent late last year because she is a lesbian. Bethany is the only organization located near Easter that is participating in the federal program.
A few months after turning Easter away, Bethany’s leadership announced in March that it had changed its policy and would now be accepting applications from LGBTQ families, the lawsuit says.
But the agency told Easter she would have to drive to its office in Smyrna, Tennessee, a half-hour away, because its office located closer to her Nashville home is under contract with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which won’t certify same-sex couples as foster parents.

Because there is no other available communication system that works with 2,700+ of my friends and acquaintances on it. I am in regular contact with relatives who, without the Book of Faces, would not even have heard from me for 40 years and never would again; childhood friends from back to 70 years ago. My sport, disc golf, lives, breathes and organizes on Facebook at the club and state level, one reason why there is the energy to be currently building 3.5 new disc golf courses a day. Before retirement I traveled a lot and have friends I may never see again but who are very important to me. Heck, I have very good friends whom I never physically met. I really could go on and on. Whatever replaces Facebook needs to have a heck of a lot of functionality.

Computers are designed and built to perform repetitive tasks at an extremely high speed. They are extremely efficient at this. However, when you break it down, the complex interactions of humans are not repetitive, they are constantly changing. Trying to manage hate speech with an algorithm is nothing more than a cheap cop-out to avoid paying the army of people they’d need to do the job properly. I’m sure that eventually, it’ll be possible to build AIs that are efficient at evolving and adapting to changes in patterns, but it’ll be a very long time before then, and even longer before they approach the ability of humans to do the job, if ever.
Your spam filter has been doing a pretty good job for nearly 20 years, and it’s one of the simplest AI algorithms out there. But there’s the uncanny valley of sema tics that will be hard to cross unless the algorithms start understanding and that will take a while.

At our house Christmas has become more about the food than the gifts. My family isn’t present in our lives(their choice)and my husband’s family is mostly in FL so we usually spend the holidays alone. Hubby and I stopped doing gifts a long time ago and only get something for our son and hubby’s parents. This year the kid is getting an Iron Maiden quilt with all the album covers and versions of Eddie(except the most recent album/Eddie) that The Husband found online. We got his parents a custom made metal thing that hangs on a wall, fence or door that has their last name and the date they got married on it. I still haven’t decided on the holiday menu yet, but to me that has become way more significant than presents.

Why?
Because the British crown had agreed to limit the borders of the British colonies. This meant that colonists could not move westward freely or attack the native Americans west of the established colony borders.
Manifest Destiny is nothing less than a repudiation of this limitation that the crown had created.

That’s the way to do it! We do Christmas Eve dinner for the family and a couple neighbors who might as well be family. (Except for last year because of Covid.) This year I need to come up with a vegetarian alternative to our traditional beef for daughter-in-law and son who have gone vegetarian, though son may still opt for meat on festive occasions. I’ll need to check that.

So true!! It’s not FB itself that posts articles that incense me, it’s my FB friends and their friends who infuriate me.
Recently there was a discussion on MSNBC (? or maybe CNN) about how RW media publishes articles specifically designed to agitate their base and lead them to attack (at least verbally) those who they characterize as leftists (or whatever the insult du jour is). What I have found is that this RW base is what triggers my reactions as they propagate the lies and misrepresentations that they have been told and have fully adopted as their “truth”.

How familiar are you with deep neural network models and the progress made in the past few years? Facebook is actually driving much of the cutting edge AI research with their PyTorch library; one of the few beneficial things they’re doing.
The difference between a bank and Facebook is *reliability*. When you’re playing with Other People’s Money, people tend to come completely unglued if they can’t virtually fondle it at any time, day or night. Facebook has stresses on it (see people losing their shit when FB was down a few weeks ago), but I can guarantee you it is not processing well over a trillion dollars of transactions in a number of different channels every day. The biggest banks are. We’re not going to be bringing in neural nets and AI until it’s been broken and broken and broken and finally proven to be reliable. That’s not right now. Heck, we’re just now taking baby steps into the cloud.

Neural nets are used in some image recognition software for checks. But, your point is well taken that the banking industry has stricter rules and requirements than FB. 95% accurate is not good enough for a bank, but would go a long way to getting rid of toxic content. My point is that image recognition and natural language processing AI have made major advances in the past few years. If FB decided that they actually want to eliminate toxic content, they could do so quite well with AI that they have currently available.

I know there is a major lawsuit going on in the chess programming community between open source Stockfish and Chess Base. Stockfish alleges Chess Base stole it’s neural network coding.
The Stockfish project strongly believes in free and open-source software and data. Collaboration is what made this engine the strongest chess engine in the world. We license our software using the GNU General Public License, Version 3 (GPL) with the intent to guarantee all chess enthusiasts the freedom to use, share and change all versions of the program.
Unfortunately, not everybody shares this vision of openness. We have come to realize that ChessBase concealed from their customers Stockfish as the true origin of key parts of their products (see also earlier blog posts by us and the joint Lichess, Leela Chess Zero, and Stockfish teams). Indeed, few customers know they obtained a modified version of Stockfish when they paid for Fat Fritz 2 or Houdini 6 - both Stockfish derivatives - and they thus have good reason to be upset. ChessBase repeatedly violated central obligations of the GPL, which ensures that the user of the software is informed of their rights. These rights are explicit in the license and include access to the corresponding sources, and the right to reproduce, modify and distribute GPLed programs royalty-free.

As I keep on saying, as long as there are 50 Republicans in the Senate who vote in lockstep with McConnell, Biden’s hands are totally tied. He cannot force Manchin or Sinema to agree to anything they are truly adamantly opposed to. Remember, there is no public option in the ACA because the Democrats dropped it to appease Lieberman. Biden is in a much more precarious position than Obama was during his first 2 years. There aren’t 2 Republicans who are willing to switch parties and that’s what Biden needs in order to truly get agreement on a real package designed to help Americans.
