So 3 years ago my daily driver failed and we’ve been a one car home since. My wife hates this as she has to cart me to work. Well, her campaign of terror against me has paid off and we went and picked out a new car (rav4 hybrid). The sales guy said the car is stuck at the port and gave me December 28 th as a delivery date.

Gorgeous day on the slope. Yes, slope singular, there is one run to ski.

Skied for 2 1/2 hours. Half the time on alpine skis half the time on the freeheel setup.

My last new car (2007 Toyota sienna) was built in Kentucky. I have 200k plus miles on it and I will do to it what I do to all my vehicles, drive it into the dirt from whence it came.

It’s hard. I quit almost 20 yrs ago after an oral cancer scare, but it took awhile before I didn’t want a cigarette anymore. My best advice is don’t give yourself shit too badly if you have a smoke. Just start over and quit again. Every cig not smoked is a victory.

I used a vape whatchyamathingy to quit. Gradually reduced nicotine levels to zero, until I was essentially pretending to smoke. 12 years now since my last cigarette. And 11 years since the vape. This might not be the way for everyone but for this former 3 pack a day guy, it was. Hang in there.

I quit smoking tobacco for six years. Until about June 2020. Just out of sheer boredom. I smoke about four filtered kretek cigarettes a day. Last month I went almost five days then I caved. Nicotine, it’s a motherfucker.

Feb 2020 I thought I bit my right cheek and it was tender. Didn’t think anything of it. the lump was always there. A week later went to my dentist for deep cleaning, the hygienist took a look and got my Dentist to look. She finished the cleaning, Dentist came back and said I was going to the Kaiser emergency room right NOW.

Turned out it was cancer of the salivary gland and the oncologist said if I waited another week it would have spread into my lymph nodes.

They cut out the mass and had me go thru a course of radiation therapy. Learned the hard way that smoking 2 packs of Kools or Newports a day for 20 years almost killed me.

Dude started at 8 years old (!) He smoked for decades, then quit for 7 years. Then he started again and smoked for another 20 years. He had a heart attack, was in the hospital, and soon as he got out he smoked a cigarette. I figured he would die smoking.

Then a miracle happened and he just quit cold turkey. Going on 6 years. He won’t smoke again.

I tried quitting once, didn’t take, then after two decades of smoking I quit for good. Just got done with it. 10 plus years now. I will never smoke anything again.

Quitting is a process, but when you truly break through, it’s awesome. And food tastes and smells SO good. So that’s good and bad. But it is so nice not to be hooked anymore.

My dad was the same way. Started as a kid, really got hooked hard in the army in WW2. Quit and started a number of times, once stopped for several years.

Then suddenly he was able to stop cold turkey and that was it. Stayed off for decades, the rest of his life.

The Sunday column of Stephen Chapman of the Chicago Tribune also took the position that we are so fractured that a dissolution may be the only outcome. But there is no comparison to the last time states tried to depart; most larger states have large population of those on either side of the divide; it’s not as though there is a contiguous territory that can easily be partitioned. California was the state with the largest number of Trump voters in the nation; Florida had the second largest number of Biden voters and Texas the third. There is no way for an amicable partition — and I have no doubt that Putin, with the assistance of his toady Trump, is behind this effort to destroy our nation. He never forgave us for the dissolution of the Soviet Union and he is working assiduously at bring the same end to the United States, but this will have a far more violent outcome.

Maybe try the patch? My mom was, up until early 2019 (? was it 2019, or was it 2018) a two pack a day woman. Her doctor put her on Chantix**, which actually helped her to cut down a lot, but she REALLY didn’t like the mental effects, so she stopped taking it. I remember being hugely disappointed that she would go back to smoking, but she surprised the HELL out of me and my brother. He was put in charge of doling out and changing her patches, and over a few months, she was completely off cigs (but not before smoking every damn butt she could find in the house, garage, etc., down to the nub). It’s been over two years (maybe over three?). I do remember telling my brother how relieved I was she had quit when Covid became a thing in 2020.

**Currently unavailable and on recall for a different reason (high levels of nitrosamines, which can cause cancer). Mom had previously tried Zyban (buproprion) as a cessation aid, which wigged me out, because I’ve been taking Wellbutrin (also buproprion) for depression since the late 1990s. But it didn’t work for her.

You know why the MAGAts are now talking “divorce” and “balkanization”? Because they tried “revolution” and found out that not only did millions of “patriots” fail to show up in DC to “take back” the country, but there was no mass mutiny in the ranks of the Armed Forces to throw in their lot with the few thousand peckerheads that bothered to show up. All their years of fantasizing about how they’d throw out the “tyrants” and replace them with “real Americans” collapsed into a puddle of piss. Worse, they’ve seen the poll numbers and realized that their Charge of the Light Beer Brigade failed to move public sentiment in their favor.

So now they’re talking as though the choices are between “civil war” or letting them walk away cleanly, when the reality is that they have neither the numbers nor the support to ever be anything more than domestic terrorists. And even that’s a stretch, as we watch all these brave “patriots” blubber and whine before judges about how they were just “tourists” who got lost in the Capital Building, swept along by the crowd that they totally weren’t there to support. All because they lost an election that the majority of America agrees was legit.

The thing that has stuck out to me about the processing and sentencing of all those Meal Team 6 wannabes for their 1/6 exploits is not the light sentences that people have focused on, it’s how many of them are moaning about how their lives have been “ruined.” The ones who’ve lost jobs, others who’ve become social pariahs, or become estranged from their families to the point that some got turned in by relatives. hi

More Republican corruption, this time from my state.

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry [NE-1] expects to be indicted for lying to FBI but says charge is false (Omaha World-Herald, four hours ago)

His wife is calling this a political attack.

LINCOLN — Rep. Jeff Fortenberry expects the federal government to charge him with lying to the FBI during its investigation of campaign contributions funneled to him from a Nigerian billionaire.

The nine-term Republican from Lincoln said he is being wrongly accused.

“We will fight these charges. I did not lie to them,” Fortenberry said in a videotaped statement obtained Monday by The World-Herald. “This is wrong on so many levels.”

Knowingly making false statements to a federal agent is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison. A source familiar with the investigation said an indictment could come down as early as Tuesday.

The anticipated indictment grew out of an FBI investigation, launched in California during the Trump administration, regarding $180,000 in illegal “conduit” campaign contributions from Gilbert Chagoury, a Nigerian billionaire of Lebanese descent. The contributions, funneled through a group of Californians from 2012 through 2016, went to four U.S. politicians, including $30,200 to Fortenberry in 2016 and $10,000 to then-Rep. Lee Terry, who represented the Omaha area, in 2014.

Fortenberry apparently isn’t in trouble for receiving the contributions; his campaign has said he was unaware that the money came from Chagoury. Instead, the congressman faces prosecution because of what he told or did not tell agents during their investigation into Chagoury’s scheme.

In extremely local news, two items:

a) I WON THE LOTTO!

Twenty dollars and two free tickets

b) We went into the county seat for grocery shopping, which we’re trying to do as little as possible because of the absolute ignorance of the pandemic in the Nebraska Panhandle.

Because the state shut down all testing, the few places which can do tests have moved to provide free tests in the Panhandle. Three of them are Scottsbluff/Gering (the only Walgreens and a hospital and a community health centre), and one is in Chadron (the hospital there).

My wife and I were the only people wearing masks in the store. The checkout clerk noted she isn’t seeing us often now (that’s because of the nonchalance over Covid-19 safety here) and wondered why we would do over $500 shopping in one go. She also says she remembers us as the biggest sale she ever did as a cashier ($680).

It’s kind of pointless to note we’re not going out over the whole Panhandle ignoring health safety.

For the week ending October 10, Panhandle Public Heath District’s Dashboard shows a positivity rate of 10.2%, down from the week before at 17.8%. All Panhandle counties meet the CDC criteria for “high” transmission rate. The case rate is 233/100,000.

The American position is trying to collect taxes from American military personnel violates the Status of Forces Agreement. The German position is it’s in line with German law.

German tax collectors in Bavaria get in on the act of going after American base personnel (Stars & Stripes)

STUTTGART, Germany — A U.S. military family in Bavaria is being targeted by German tax investigators, possibly signaling an expansion of a controversial tax collection operation to a state where tens of thousands of Americans are based.

Earlier this month, Sandra Johnson, a German with a U.S. green card, opened her mail to find a letter from the Ansbach finance office demanding information about her husband, a Defense Department civilian.

The questionnaire, which resembled those that have been sent to active-duty military and other DOD personnel based some 160 miles away near Ramstein Air Base, was the first known to have been issued to a military family in Bavaria.

Tax officials wanted to know how long the Johnsons had been in Germany, and they sought proof that the family intended to leave in the future.

The tax office also told Johnson she needed to hand over her husband’s U.S. tax records for inspection. She said the stress is unbelievable.

“And you are basically left to deal with it by yourself,” she added.

Such questionnaires have been used to collect information and eventually open formal tax cases against American military members.

The stakes for families locked in such disputes have been high: threats of imprisonment and property confiscation, yearslong court fights and six-figure tax bills.

A very in-depth article about the history of meth and how it is currently a scourge for the homeless, and soon to be homeless. Definitely worth a read. It is the Atlantic, and you are limited on articles, unless you are a subscriber.

Hundreds of those bags contained a substance neither Bozenko nor Toske had ever thought could be used to make P2P. Bozenko often consulted a book that outlined chemicals that might serve as precursors to making methamphetamine, but this particular substance wasn’t in it. Well-trained organic chemists were clearly improvising new ways to make the ingredients, expanding potential supply even further.

Working through all the chemicals in the plant, by Bozenko’s estimation, the lab could have produced 900 metric tons of methamphetamine. Against a wall stood three 1,000-liter reactors, two stories tall.
Nothing like this had been achieved with ephedrine, nor could it have been; no one could have imagined the accumulation of 900 metric tons of the chemical. Later, Mexican investigators would report that of the 16 workers arrested at the Querétaro lab, 14 died over the next six months from liver failure—presumably caused by exposure to chemicals at the lab.

Methamphetamine was having a cultural moment in the U.S.—“meth mouth” had become an object of can’t-look-away fascination on the internet, and Breaking Bad was big. The switch from ephedrine-based labs to ones using the P2P method was even a plot point in the series. But few people outside the DEA really understood the consequences of this shift. Soon, tons of P2P meth were moving north, without any letup, and the price of meth collapsed. But there was more to the story than higher volume. Ephedrine meth tended to damage people gradually, over years. With the switchover to P2P meth, that damage seemed to accelerate, especially damage to the brain.

update: I am still reading the article, but what stands out is that the new meth is even more toxic to the brain, and instead of wasting away usually over a period of months or years, not weeks. That current meth use goes hand in hand with the increase use of fentanyl. Scary stuff.
and lastly:

The spread of P2P meth is part of a larger narrative—a shift in drug supply from plant-based drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin to synthetic drugs, which can be made anywhere, quickly, cheaply, and year-round. Underground chemists are continually seeking to develop more potent and addictive varieties of them. The use of mind-altering substances by humans is age-old, but we have entered a new era.

Lincoln, Nebr. Journal-Star opinion on our new gerrymandered Unicameral districts:

Sen. Rob Clements introduced himself to his new Lancaster County constituents last week in deeply troubling fashion, signing on to a letter calling for a 50-state audit of the 2020 presidential election results.

The Elmwood Republican, who was gerrymandered into representing eastern Lancaster County, including a slice of east Lincoln, justified his decision to join legislators from other states by saying that his constituents had raised concerns about election security.

That, Senator, would be some of your constituents.

As Nebraska Democratic Party chairwoman Jane Kleeb pointed out: “I know Sen. Clements mostly discusses issues with rural voters, but since he has been gerrymandered into Lancaster County, he might want to consider there are voters who are both Democrats and Republicans.”

The remainder of Clements’ reasoning for joining the effort to undermine the 2020 election is disingenuous at best.

“I’m not wanting to disqualify President Biden,” he told the Omaha World-Herald. In fact, the letter is aimed at just that.

The city of Lincoln was cracked into six rural Unicameral districts, meaning in the next election it is likely the Democrats who represent the city and suburbs will be replaced with all rural Republican senators.

Omaha did not gain a state Unicameral district as the Census indicated it should, as my own state senator essentially argued land should be represented over people. Gerrymandering ensured rural Nebraska would retain a district it should lose under state law.

In my district, more conservative areas were added to the district, along with the more liberal city of Alliance to dilute the voting power of Alliance voters.

Last week, Rauf’s organization helped arrange the escape of an Afghan man who had served as an interpreter for American forces, including once for then-U.S. Sen. Joe Biden in 2008.

The interpreter, Aman Khalili, had helped rescue a group of American dignitaries, which along with Biden included then-U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska after their helicopter was forced to land in a blinding snowstorm in a mountainous area crawling with Taliban.

Khalili helped guide rescuers to their mountaintop location, Hagel said, as fighter jets kept the enemy at bay.

Yes, there was a study (admittedly small and not very long-term, but still valid) that indicated that the mRNA vaccines would be better as a booster for J&J-vaccinated folks than the J&J booster itself.

Via the Seattle Times, yesterday:

WSU football coach Nick Rolovich fired for refusing COVID vaccine; defensive coordinator is acting head coach

Nick Rolovich came to Washington State as a fun-loving coach, known nationally for his off-the-wall antics and an ability to win.

After less than two years and only 11 games, Rolovich has been fired, and will be known nationally as one of the highest-profile terminations for refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Washington State athletic director Pat Chun said WSU had “initiated the separation process” with Rolovich and four of his assistant coaches for not complying with the state mandate that all state employees be fully vaccinated by Monday.

Defensive coordinator Jake Dickert has been named acting head coach.

Well, kiss that $3.2 million a year job good-bye. And good luck getting hired by another university.

90% of Washington’s state employees are verified as vaccinated.

Like most states, he was the highest-paid state employee as a football coach.

One thing that bugs me is that they’re trying to put “personal beliefs” into a protected class. That’s not how discrimination works, numbnuts. You can discriminate against the mentally ill, but it’s not discrimination if I tell someone they’re stupid because they believe the sky is yellow. I might be an asshole, but it’s not discrimination.

He’s really upset not about Covid but that he’d get discrimination (blowback) for speaking the racist garbage that he really wants to spout. (And that he was used to be able to spout freely in small groups of acquaintances.)

Or lack of money for dental health. I went without dental care for over a decade and lost all my bottom molars because the amalgam fillings I had pulled away from the teeth and allowed bacteria in which causes abscesses and tooth decay. Dental insurance is a joke if you need anything major done. No matter how good the insurance is. He likely had a choice of expensive work done or just pull the teeth. I was lucky not to lose any front teeth, but I am without insurance for dental again because none of the dentists near me will now accept that plan. And then there’s waiting periods for care too. So yeah, it could be meth, or just lack of money and access.

Memories of when Dad’s Union finally negotiated a dental insurance plan. It actually covered 90% of the cost of the work. The first day of coverage Dad got an appointment with a participating dentist with excellent ratings. I spent 5 hours in the dentist chair getting fillings removed and crowns prepared. Dad’s copay— $80

Well, Karma caught up with the ass who defended Killer Zimmerman!

Attorney who represented George Zimmerman arrested on solicitation to commit perjury charges

Hal Uhrig, known for representing George Zimmerman, was charged with solicitation to commit perjury and tampering with or harassing a witness, victim or informant, according to authorities, third-degree and capital felonies respectively.

According to Florida statute 914.22, witness tampering is considered a third-degree felony unless “the official investigation or official proceeding affected (by the tampering) involves the investigation or prosecution of a life or capital felony.” This elevates witness tampering to a capital felony punishable by a life sentence.

Deputies said the incident occurred several years ago during a case when Uhrig represented a man charged with raping a child. He held a meeting in his office involving his client, the accused rapist, the victim and the victim’s father.

“The point of the meeting was to keep the rapist from going to jail,” Sheriff Marco Lopez said. “The attorney instructed the victim and her father that they should do three things. Write a declination, basically a letter, to the state attorney saying the rape didn’t happen, avoid being served with a subpoena so you don’t have to go to court to testify (and) lie during your deposition and say the rape didn’t happen.”

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — When the Taliban swept into power, they found Afghanistan’s economy fast approaching the brink and were faced with harrowing predictions of growing poverty and hunger. So they ordered the financial managers of the collapsed former government back to work, with an urgent directive: Do your jobs, because we can’t.

In the 20 years since the Taliban last ruled, Afghanistan evolved from an economy dealing mostly in illicit enterprise to a sophisticated, multi-billion-dollar system fueled by donor aid and international trade. The Taliban, a movement borne out of the rural clergy, struggled to grasp the extent of the transformation.

Projection is all they have. Again, sadly, because it’s usually all they need.

Polish President Duda declared that homosexuality and communism were “foreign ideologies” that had no place in Poland.

But by that metric, democracy is also a “foreign ideology”.

There are still plenty of folks in Poland who’d welcome a dictatorship or monarchy.

‘I just heard people screaming’ — Man dies in house fire after trying to save dog

Ruben Perez said he lived in the house for a month with his girlfriend and her brother, Lincoln Flores. He said he was at work when the fire happened. Perez said it was Lincoln who led his two sisters to safety and went back to get their family dog.

“It’s pretty much a drastic situation for Nadia and her family. You know, losing her brother,” said Perez. “[Lincoln] [was] a good person, worked hard, you know, didn’t bother no one.”

Perez said the house did not have electricity and that they all had to figure out ways to get light and keep warm.

I was able to renew my driver’s license online as a “safe driver.”
It doesn’t feel like much of an accomplishment when I’m driving about 50 miles a year during the pandemic.

A friend of mine I went to a lot of punk rock shows with when we were younger has lost most of his teeth from a bad opioid addiction. Same thing, super decent middle class upbringing, and was not the kind of guy who you’d think that would happen. Thing is, he got dealt a very shitty hand in life, got hit by a truck and has had a dozen or so surgeries since. He’s been off heroin for three years but he’s still in a lot of pain and takes opiates to this day.

Marat, we’re poor
And the poor stay poor
Marat, don’t make us wait any more
We want our rights and we don’t care how
We want a revolution now

Marat/Sade

What’s a revolutution without general copulation?
