There’s no room for personal responsibility when people believe that an all-powerful external entity is charting the course of their lives.

The UK has a revamped welfare program called Universal Credit and everything I’ve read about it indicates it’s pretty fucked up. (Of course the Tories came up with it and love it.) Now we have this.

‘What kidnappers do’ - DWP forcing universal credit claimants to pose for photo with daily paper
One person trying to claim universal credit was told to have someone else take a photo of them holding a street sign in their right hand.

The instructions were posted in at least one person’s universal credit journal - the online platform used to manage benefit claims - by a DWP employee, according to the Public Interest Law Centre (PILC).

This is part of a package of measures to clamp down on benefit fraud, the DWP told The Big Issue. Separately, the director general for universal credit confirmed the requirements were legitimate and said they were part of the government’s effort to verify people who signed up for benefits during the pandemic, when face-to-face meetings were not possible.

The instructions, issued to a person making their first claim, read: “Further to today’s phone call, I now require you to provide the following information. If you don’t provide all of the information that we’ve requested your claim will be closed.”

The directions asked the claimant, who remains anonymous, to upload a photo of their ID plus a separate picture of the ID held next to their face.

That cat is smart! My cat just follows me downstairs, plops herself down next to her water bowl and then proceeds to meow until I get the hint and dole out a few treats. (No, she does not get treats every time I walk downstairs.)

On the subject of bullying, I remember in 7th grade having my textbooks stolen and then finally my locker actually burned down. Which, in a way, saved me from having to buy the books that had been stolen from me. “They burned in the fire,” I said. The girl who did it did not get into trouble.

I was bullied so much in school that I had only a couple of friends, and when my family moved from California to Texas in 1973, I lost those few friends and never made new ones. I just walled myself off from others, and it led me down some very odd paths. *sigh* Life is MUCH BETTER now, MUCH BETTER.

Like every single piece of either shoddy or misleading reporting, they exaggerate the numerator and forget the denominator.

“Tens quit due to vaccine mandate”, sounds more eyecatching than, “Less than 0.01% of employees at healthcare system quit over vaccine mandates” (Edit:)when the employer had tens of thousands of employees.

And in other cases, the reporting was based on an outright false source, and the number was low. For example reporting claiming that “dozens of troopers from the Massachusetts State Police union were quitting over vaccine mandates”, when the real number was _1_.

UPDATED: Massachusetts State Police say only one trooper retired over vaccine mandate

So 3%. It will be interesting to see what happens in Chicago — they may feel that they have the numbers to handicap the police and fire departments. Of course, the question is what jobs will be available for them. There are a lot of restaurants who need wait staff to replace those that quit; maybe they could apply for those.

The pilot who was shot down and rescued at the core of Blackhawk Down has announced a senate run for Shelby’s seat (AL, The Smart One). I ran into him at Rucker before he retired, so I hoped he was running as a Dem I could vote for.

Nope. He’s trying to out-Trump Mo Brooks and Shelby’s chosen replacement.

Their burgers aren’t much better. I have no idea why they have the reputation they do. Their food is mediocre at best.

All the Bible verses printed on their paper cups and wrappers.

I would bet if you go digging into this, they are objecting because of “religious freedom.”

Most of the time, the country ignores Nebraska. No one in the press even bothered to dig in during the summer to see why that giant hole of non-reporting over Covid-19 was happening.

At least Wonkette’s got us covered.

To be on the US right (or even a both-sides type) is to be stupid, evil or both.

US political reporting is 95+% studiously ignoring this inconvenient truth.

J&J sold the powder for 60 years, and now that it has to pay for these women’s medical bills, it wants the courts to treat “Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder” as a separate company.

➡️ J&J net worth: $440 billion.
➡️ “J&J Baby Powder” net worth: $2 billion.

This is an injustice.

This is a good example of how these problems are so systemic — any other corporate executives in this situation would do exactly the same to try to reduce liability. This is completely generic.

So in extremely local news:

My car is due for its annual checkup by the Mercedes dealer in Westminster, Colo.

Called them this morning for a service appointment. “I can book you for January.”

???

They now only have one Smart mechanic in the place. Tried calling other Mercedes dealers in Colorado: Denver, Colorado Springs, Loveland. All said “call Westminster.”

My wife suggested trying the Mercedes dealer in Lincoln, Nebr. but that’s four hundred miles away.

Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto tests positive for Covid-19 (CNN)

New York (CNN Business)Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto has tested positive for Covid-19.

Cavuto, who has been public about his health challenges over the years, including a nearly 25-year journey with multiple sclerosis, was off his afternoon Fox program on Tuesday as a result of the diagnosis.

“While I’m somewhat stunned by this news, doctors tell me I’m lucky as well,” Cavuto said in a statement released through Fox News Media. “Had I not been vaccinated, and with all my medical issues, this would be a far more dire situation. It’s not, because I did and I’m surviving this because I did.”

He urged viewers to get vaccinated. His test result came back right after he anchored his Monday show.

Their burgers aren’t much better. I have no idea why they have the reputation they do. Their food is mediocre at best.

While not great, they are generally an order of magnitude better than generic fast food burgers for the price point and for a very long time in California you had 3 choices, make them yourself, get McDonalds/Jack in the Box/Burger King/Carl’s Jr. or go to In and Out which was slightly better. So I think it’s riding on it’s 1980s-1990s reputation still. Nostalgia. ‘member Berries.

Also, when Minimum wage was $4.25 here in the 90s, In-and-Out was starting at $8/hour or more. Weird for a bunch of Christo-fascist asshats, but the result was good for workers and I was OK with supporting that. No idea if they are still above that curve.

Funny story from my sister: their first au pair was a terrific guy from Switzerland, a nation quite familiar with cold and snow. One winter day he leaves and immediately returns, totally confused by the precipitation: he had never seen freezing rain before. My sister explained that if he wanted to be able to get around in the Chicago area, that was a weather condition he was going to have to confront. He immediately returned outdoors, got in the car, and figured out how to handle it.

A doctor is trying to save lives, and the Clinton News Network calls him crazy. This is an outrage!

It’s infuriating that this maniac thinks the failure to revoke his medical license means he hasn’t lost his mind, when clearly he has. He looks in the mirror with a clean conscience after killing idiots with bullshit. He’s probably a narcissist with his head up his own ass, rather than a psychopath.
