Amazing Solo Acoustic Guitar Tour De Force by Yasmin Williams: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Lars Gotrich | October 19, 2021
Yasmin Williams doesn’t need much scenery to set your imagination in motion. For her Tiny Desk (home) concert, the Virginia-based guitarist keeps the background sparse (a rug, a folding table, curtains, a plank of wood) to foreground her inventive playing.

Williams’ set begins with Urban Driftwood’s “Juvenescence,” a tenderly picked tune that suddenly springs to life when she flips the acoustic guitar onto her lap to fingertap the dizzying variation. In the hands of others, this move signifies showmanship that highlights ability, but sometimes downplays the substance of the song. For Williams, technique and songcraft are one in the same; if she runs out of fingers to drum the body of the guitar, she straps on tap shoes (“Through the Woods”); if a quiet melody requires a hint of percussion, she strikes the strings with a mallet hammer (“On a Friday Night”). In these songs, the center is exploration — this Tiny Desk performance, in camera angles overhead and out front, shows us the tools that help Williams execute her vision via finger picks, taps, slides and knocks. Oh, and there’s a kalimba taped to the body of her guitar, too!

“After the Storm,” inspired by some Black Lives Matter protests Williams attended last summer, is where the musician expands her universe (and wardrobe!) in a four-way split screen of herself. Overtones from a 12-string guitar drift across a resolute six-string melody and, later, a harp guitar’s swirling countermelody, and a brief backing from a fourth guitar. “I was trying to digest everything that was happening,” she says of the song, capturing the complex emotions that flood the way forward, with an eye toward hope.

There are far more of these predators out there in ‘minor authority’ jobs that bring them into contact with young people than anyone wants to admit.

A Florida pastor who launched a new church this fall and a teacher were among 125 people arrested in a 20-day human trafficking sting that resulted in the rescue of four women and a 17-year-old, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

“Individuals who make a conscious choice and effort to take advantage of others through human trafficking have no room in Hillsborough County,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister declared during a press conference on the arrests. “Our approach and efforts year-round are proactive and relentless. Our strong team of detectives will continue to work tirelessly to takedown and put a stop to human trafficking.”

Chronister said during the sting operation dubbed “Operation Round-Up” that started on Aug. 4 and ended Oct. 13, undercover detectives targeted criminals who attempted to prey upon minors, sought sex for themselves or exploited victims through human trafficking.

I had to check out of curiousity, the last time Tritt looks like he was culturally relevant was almost 20 years ago. He hasn’t released a single that made the top 10 country songs since ‘02, hasn’t had an album crack the top 10 since ‘07, and hasn’t won an award since ‘00. He’s probably making more on the residuals and licensing of his songs for country b-movies than he is actually continuing to tour.

We’re rapidly being surrounded. South Dakota is caving.

South Dakota lawmakers on Tuesday advanced a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana use for adults while repealing much of the state’s new medical marijuana law.

The Adult-Use Marijuana Study Subcommittee, which has been studying the issue since June, voted to recommend a bill that would allow people over 21 to purchase up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of cannabis for recreational use. It would repeal most aspects of the medical marijuana law that voters passed last year, but still contain provisions for people under 21 to use marijuana for medical purposes.

The bill would still need to be cleared by a pair of legislative committees, the full Legislature next year, and the governor’s desk to become law. But lawmakers’ willingness to advance the issue showed a growing acknowledgment in the Republican-controlled Statehouse that recreational marijuana legalization has popular support.

Beautiful forehead

Not quite — キレイキレイ (kireikirei) is a bit like the childish “Rubadub” with キレイ in this case meaning “clean” rather than the more common meaning of “pretty”.

Google Translate is useful, I use it a lot (too much probably) but it misses a lot of cultural references and local context between languages. In Japanese is a repeated word like キレイキレイ is often a sound effect or a childish phrase.

Deutsche Welle:

Prosecutors arrest two former German soldiers on terrorism charges

German federal prosecutors said on Wednesday they had arrested two former Bundeswehr soldiers who are “strongly suspected” of having attempted to form a paramilitary unit made up of other former soldiers or police officers.

In a statement, the prosecutors said that the two men, identified only as Arend-Adolf G. and Achim A. under German privacy laws, had been primarily motivated by an expected monthly payment of around €40,000 ($46,560) to each member of the unit.

The unit was planned to consist of between 100 and 150 mercenaries and be under the sole command of the two men who have been arrested, the statement said.

According to the prosecutors, the two men wanted to deploy the unit to carry out combat operations in the ongoing civil war in Yemen with the aim of “pacifying” the region and forcing Houthi rebels and the Yemeni government to negotiate.

Mt. Aso is a very dangerous volcano, a constant threat on Kyushu.

It’s also a big tourist attraction. I have vague plans to visit Mt. Aso next time I’m in Japan. There are roads up to the cluster of craters at the top with sightseeing buses going all the way up (unlike Mt. Fuji). I do know that sometimes tourists are barred from the summit of Mt. Aso due to gas, ash clouds etc. as it is very much an active volcano.

Here in San Diego County we are at 80.0% fully vaccinated (12+) and 89.2% with at least one dose.

The new vaccination rate has slowed down very much. I wonder about all those people who got one dose and decided to not get the second dose.

At least in these parts, the lower vaccination rates are in the eastern part of the county, where the religious right cling on (it’s Duncan Hunter’s old seat, now held by Car Thief). Also, in central San Diego there are parts where vaccination rates are lower. Part of this is because black Americans are hesitant, understandably so given history.

A Spanish drone operator on Tuesday received permission to try to rescue three emaciated dogs trapped near a volcano in the Canary Islands, by catching them with a remote-controlled net and flying them out over a stream of lava.

The three dogs have been stranded for weeks in an abandoned yard covered with volcanic ash on the island of La Palma.
They have been fed by drones dropping packages of food, but until now no one has been able to figure out how to rescue them. Helicopters are banned from flying to the area because of hot gas that can damage their rotors.

ETA: TBH, it looks like that “Hello” nonsense is a joke/satire/parody of “evangelical” crap-mail that somehow someone seems to have taken seriously.
But then again, the really sad part is that it MAY have circulated with serious (insane, but serious) intent.

When I moved (back) to Lubbock in the 80s, I noticed a few people reacting oddly when I said “hello,” mostly a brief look of wide eyed suspicion, followed by a leery, “what?” or “huh?” I got exasperated with this a couple of times and said, “You know, standard English greeting, for quite a while now.” A little investigation finally showed that the goobers did in fact associate it with “hell” as well as with higher education (automatically suspicious ). Don’t use “hello” to low class whites in Lubbock or the rest of Gooberland. I am entirely serious.

That’s the probable first cause. That he is suing to overturn it (or presumably to get paid off a large amount) sounds like not facing up to not being as exceptional as he thought he was.

At a minimum this will mean that his contract will get a very thorough going over. And obviously he is not in a “right to work” state.

“It is an alteration of hallo, itself an alteration of holla, hollo, a shout to attract attention, which seems to go back at least to late 14c. (compare Middle English verb halouen “to shout in the chase,” hallouing). OED cites Old High German hala, hola, emphatic imperative of halon, holon “to fetch,” “used especially in hailing a ferryman.” Fowler in the 1920s listed halloo, hallo, halloa, halloo, hello, hillo, hilloa, holla, holler, hollo, holloa, hollow, hullo, and writes, “The multiplicity of forms is bewildering ….”

While Trump was president, he was accused of violating this law. He was able to get the case dismissed on the grounds that the court lacked authority to monitor the president’s day-to-day actions. In other words, while Trump was the president, he hid behind the broad authority and discretion granted by the PRA. Now that Trump is no longer president, he argues that it is unconstitutional and should be overturned.

WhenI was in college I would answer the phone with a “Yo” and my Dad would lose his temper over that…

I had a friend who always answered the phone with, “Yellow.”

“JewishWonk” is being way over-wonky here, methinks. It ought to be pretty obvious by now that when Republican officeholders like Rubio start blithering away about “socialism”(/”communism”/”Radical left”), said terms have virtually no real meaning as regards actual political/economic policies, but are just buzzword insults designed to peremptorily dismiss whatever issue the idiot spouting off wants to dismiss.
As opposed to, y’know, actually debating/explaining/articulating a position….

“JewishWonk” is an immigrant from the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

Scene from the Rule Committee hearing—

Rep. Raskin: Do you accept that Joe Biden won the election?

Rep. Gaetz: I accept that Joe Biden is the president.

Question needs to read: “Do you accept that Joseph Biden is the legally elected President?”

Leaves them less wiggle room

What’s weird is that nowhere in her campaign does she promise better access to science and math education, better access to health services for the little guy, or even a modern economic outlook planning a more diverse energy and infrastructure system.

Just another Trump Republican….On second thought, totally on-brand again.
