Great Video: How Does Your Optical Mouse Work?

Technology • Views: 23,432

YouTube

Excuse me while I totally geek out on this amazing video that goes into more detail than I’ve ever seen on the software and hardware inside a computer mouse, with terrific graphics.

You’ve probably used a mouse today. But do you know how it works?
Check out https://www.pcbway.com/ for all kinds of PCBs, easy ordering, and quick delivery. Take a look at their PCB Assembly, for an inexpensive population of the components on your PCBs.

In this video, we explore the different parts of a computer mouse and we’ll focus on the optical navigation system. Specifically, we’ll look at how exactly computer mice can track their movement on a mouse pad. Finally, we take a look at the difference between gaming mice and normal mice, and we explore DPI or dots per inch and how different mice have different amounts of DPI.

At the town hall

Said Biden: “The violent, deadly insurrection on the Capitol nine months ago, it was about white supremacy, in my opinion.”

Best rando comment, nice and succinct

Trump stoked and played off of racial hatred in this country to gas up his base. Republicans can see how the changing demographics of our country will not work in their favor so they’re stoking up racial tension and fear. Republicans think this is the only way that they can still win elections. President Biden is 100% correct.

Sounds exactly like what you’d expect from a Fox News fan.

My hostile comments to Trumpsters are much more decorously phrased and usually involve politely pointing out where their remarks are false. Though sometimes I do descend to calling them supporters of white supremacism and fascism — but those are facts.

Don’t be foolish. We’d import any good Texans out of Texas before we kissed that state goodbye. But of course, it’s all in jest anyway. There’s no way Texas could legitimately secede, or be removed from the union; nor would it be to anybody’s benefit to actually do so, no matter how stupid Texas’s government is being right now.

It wasn’t anything exotic like a methane pocket or toxin. They just got in over their heads hiking on a hot day.

A family of three found dead on a Northern California hiking trail in August died of heat exposure and possible dehydration, the local sheriff’s office revealed Thursday.

“Heat-related deaths are extremely difficult to investigate,” Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese said at a press conference, citing an official cause of death of “hyperthermia and probably dehydration.”

Good Evening Lizards. How goes it?

I took a day off from dealing with hospital/doctors/insurance company bullshit to sort of chill. Also had to deal with another ant invasion in my kitchen, which took the better part of the morning and bits and pieces of my afternoon/evening to hopefully resolve. I’m going to have to spray a barrier spray outside and a more pet friendly form/version of something indoors. The ants around here are persistent unless you poison the hell out of them and I can’t do that with a doggo who eats random crap from the yard regularly. So this isn’t my first time having fun with this. Ack. Yay. Fun.

Hope you all are doing well today and not dealing with ants. Or worse.

Had an “Oh Noes!” moment today. Removed 50-year-old paneling from one wall, filled holes, primer, and paint, easy peasy. Next wall, removed paneling to discover 62-year-old wallpaper on the wall. Some say use oil-based primer and then paint. Some say 1/4” drywall, tape, mud, then primer and paint.

I really have no idea.

As Austin Blue said, depends on what’s under it. A painted or properly prepared (with sizing) wall and you should be able to strip it. (Roll a doohicky with little pointy bits all over it and steam or apply wallpaper stripper.) Unfortunately, occasionally wallpaper goes up over bare drywall. This leaves you removing bits of wallpaper (and the underlying paper on the wallboard) with tweezers and leaves a rather rough surface. You can skim coat it with drywall compound or just go over it with “texture paint”.
You can prime and paint over most wallpaper, but in my limited experience, it will never be perfect.

California Officials Reveal How Hiking Family Mysteriously Dropped Dead (The Daily Beast)

Over 30 years ago my husband and I were hiking in Death Valley in October; the temperature was in the mid’80’s and I became very dehydrated; fortunately it was a relatively short hike and, unlike me, my husband kept himself properly hydrated. But I did learn a lesson about the importance of being hydrated.

The Mariposa Lily is correct.

Beware if there is any metallic paint on the wallpaper. It will have to be removed or covered by new dry wall. It will never take paint, even if it is primed. “Scabrous texture” will be your legacy.

Not the same at all. It’s 9 months of having someone else prepare all your meals and clean your rooms, while having complete control of your schedule (time to awaken, time to sleep, time to dine), including spending the day in bed if you so choose. Designed obviously for affluent retirees. It actually sounds boring but if you were planning on writing a novel, it might provide the right ambiance for working on the project.

They come frozen, and then are microwaved, split, and filled with Wolf Brand Chili (accept no substitutes!) and sprinkled with shaved cheddar and Monterrey Jack cheese.

They are unspeakably awful, but quite popular at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.

“… Wednesday, the Department of Justice served a complaint filed against a Montana man to recover a $9.9 million penalty imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for nearly 5,000 unlawful and malicious “spoofed” robocalls. …

… According to the FCC’s investigation, Rhodes’ unlawful spoofed robocalls allegedly included highly inflammatory messages indicative of Rhodes’ intent to cause harm. For example, hundreds of Rhodes’ spoofed robocalls targeted residents of Brooklyn, Iowa, in the aftermath of a local woman’s murder. Those spoofed robocalls allegedly included a message that the local woman had been murdered by a “biological hybrid of white and savage Aztec ancestors” and that if she “could be brought back to life for just one moment,” she would ask the listener to “kill them all.” Over two thousand of the spoofed robocalls allegedly targeted residents of Charlottesville, Virginia, during the investigation and prosecution of James Alex Fields Jr., who was responsible for killing one woman and injuring dozens during the “Unite the Right” rally in August 2017. The spoofed robocalls included a message that Charlottesville’s “Jew Mayor” and “his pet Negro Police Chief” were responsible for the death of the “unhealthy, morbidly obese” victim. The message also stated, “We’re no longer going to tolerate a Jewish lying press, and Jew corruption of an American legal system.” …”

But seriously, there are no gun ‘accidents”. It’s a euphemism for “somebody fucked the dog”. Either a grip loaded a round that shouldn’t have been loaded, and/or Baldwin pulled the trigger when he shouldn’t have (Really? The Director of Photography? What did that scenario look like?)

Somebody is going to pay, and pay a lot.

If I were to guess, they were likely getting a shot of Baldwin firing the gun toward the camera. So, the Director of Photography would probably be to the side of the camera, as well the Director (who was injured)

I’m thinking that Baldwin will likely be charged with involuntary manslaughter, which is basically the same thing that I would be charged with if I backed into and killed a child in front of my townhouse.

Wouldn’t that depend on whether he had any reason to suspect that firing the weapon could be harmful to another?

I can imagine numerous scenarios. For example, there was debris in the barrel (similar to the Brandon Lee incident) that was propelled to the side rather than straight forward. Or the director of photography was looking at a shot angle from downrange when the gun fired. Or the gun flew apart when fired, etc.

We need more info.

Movie set shooting.
I’m wondering what was in the gun that it hit two people, presumably with a single round. Debris from an earlier shot (which is basically what happened with Brandon Lee)?
It may have been a close-up of Baldwin shooting toward the camera, with the cinematographer and the director immediately behind the camera.

Well, that’s the (literally) million-dollar question, innit?

If they were test firing the weapon at a camera for a camera effect shot, the round should have have had a tissue paper cover in front of the ‘splody bits and a shield around the camera.

In any case, the talent should never handle a weapon before the grip checks, rechecks, and hands the weapon to the talent before any kind of use of the weapon.

Unfortunately, the bothsiderism is working, just like it always has. Even outside of the hellscape of Twitter, basically the only refrain is ‘Biden is the biggest failure ever! Where’s The EOs?! Dems would win if they tried but they’re worse than the Reps! IT’s all their fault!”

To be a Dem in this country, once again, is to be held to blame for everything, no matter what. While the GOP reaps the rewards for everything because everything is fucked and nothing matters.

Thing is, it’s not meaningless. It’s not news, but it’s also not meaningless. The problem is that the ‘meaning’ is precisely what you think it is: narrative setting and blame-shifting, all in service to the one side they treat as without agency, thus without cause to blame.

Michael Massee (who played Funboy in The Crow and who was the person who fired the squib load that killed Brandon Lee) was so distraught, he didn’t work for a year or so:

In the scene preceding the fatal scene, the gun was loaded with improperly-made dummy rounds, cartridges from which the special-effects crew had removed the powder charges, so in close-ups the revolver would show normal-looking bullets. However, the crew neglected to remove the primers from the cartridges. At some point before the fatal event, one of the rounds had been fired; although there was no powder charge, the energy from the fired primer was enough to push the bullet into the gun barrel, where it got stuck (a condition known as a squib load). For the fatal scene, which called for the revolver to be fired at Lee from a distance of 3.6-4.5 meters (12-15 ft), the dummy cartridges were replaced with blank rounds, which contained a powder charge and primer, but no bullet, allowing the gun to be fired without the risk of an actual projectile. When the blank round was fired, the bullet lodged in the barrel was propelled forward with almost the same force as if the round were live, and it struck Lee in the abdomen.[99][100]

en.wikipedia.org

In 1993, Massee portrayed the character Funboy in the film The Crow, starring Brandon Lee. Massee was the actor who fired the shot that killed Lee by accident on the set in 1993, due to an improperly prepared prop gun. Traumatized by the event, he returned to New York and took a year off from acting, and never saw the film. In an interview in 2005, 12 years after the incident, Massee revealed that he still had nightmares about it, going on to say, “I don’t think you ever get over something like that.”[2]

Fortenberry Was Not a Random Red State Target for Illegal Campaign Donations (Seeing Red Nebraska)

TL;DR, it was about Christian influence over the federal government.

On Tuesday, October 19, Jeff Fortenberry was indicted on three federal charges connected to his receiving and then lying about illegal campaign contributions funneled from Nigerian billionaire Gilbert Chagoury through conduits.

Early reporting by the national media claimed that Chagoury told prosecutors he had been advised to select representatives from low population states, where his money would wield more influence. While Chagoury may have said this to prosecutors, this is not the reason he chose Fortenberry as a donation target, nor did Fortenberry accept the money merely because it was offered.

Both Chagoury and Fortenberry have a shared passion: aiding Christians-specifically Catholics-in religious minority communities around the globe. In fact, this seems to be one of Fortenberry’s only persistent interests, and it appears to be the top policy concern of Chagoury.

Leader promises to “storm parliament with 10,000 people” if heinous anti-LGBTQ bill fails (LGBTQ Nation)

Human rights groups describe the bill as the “most homophobic document the world has ever seen.”

A regional leader is threatening Ghana’s national government if they don’t pass a law to increase criminalization of homosexuality and transgender identity and saying that gay people should be killed.

“I heard some people are against the Anti LGBQT+ Bill,” said Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, the president of the House of Chiefs in Ghana’s Bono region. “It would not be good for all of us because I’ll storm Parliament with 10,000 people.”

Related: Ghana Parliament leader said LGBTQ people are a pandemic “more than COVID-19”

Ghana’s parliament is currently debating the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021,” which would promote conversion therapy and ban advocating for LGBTQ rights, as well as gender affirming health care for trans people.

Homosexuality is already illegal in the majority-Christian country, and the new bill would increase the maximum prison sentence for homosexuality from three to five years. It would also ban “grossly indecent acts” that involve “amorous relations” between two people of the same sex, which experts say could include holding hands, as well as “intentional cross dressing,” which could include theater and film.

Christianity is of course the driver behind anti-LGBT laws.

According to Ghana’s 2010 national census, the breakdown of religions in the country:

Pentecostal: 28.3
All other Protestants: 18.4
Roman Catholic: 13.1
Islam: 17.6
Traditional religions: 5.2
Atheism: 5.2
All others: 0.8

Essentially in Ghana, only atheists support civil rights for LGBT people.

Indicted by a federal grand jury for lying to the FBI, GOP Congressman Jeff Fortenberry was accused today of violating his oath of office in a “disturbing way.”

According to the government, Fortenberry’s wrongdoing occurred during an investigation into illegal contributions made to the congressman’s 2016 re-election campaign; contributions that involve Gilbert Chagoury, a foreign national prohibited by federal law from contributing to federal elections, and a Chagoury associate Toufic Joseph Baaklini.

The crapfest involving the Gillette, Wyo. Public Library continues, including trying to prosecute the library director for “promoting pornography to minors” (KSID-AM, Sidney, Nebr.)

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — Commissioners of a Wyoming county have suspended all in-person public comment at their meetings amid a furor over library books involving sex and LGBTQ issues.

Campbell County commissioners in recent months have heard hours of public comment about the books in the teen and children’s sections of the county library in Gillette.

Starting with a meeting Tuesday, they suspended public comment at meetings, saying they would still accept letters, emails and phone calls, the Gillette News Record reported.

Public comments have “devolved into a session of bullying and threatening our board of commissioners, the library board and library staff,” Commissioner D.G. Reardon said at the meeting.

Library officials need time to complete their process for reviewing contested books, commission Chairman Bob Maul said.

Meanwhile, prosecutors continue to consider possible criminal charges against library officials for making certain books accessible to juveniles after a couple brought five books to the attention of law enforcement.

The books are “This Book is Gay” by Juno Dawson, “How Do You Make a Baby” by Anna Fiske, “Doing It” by Hannah Witton, “Sex is a Funny Word” by Cory Silverberg, and “Dating and Sex: A Guide for the 21st Century Teen Boy” by Andrew P. Smiler.

Republicans have not “given up on democracy.” They have been at full war against democracy since the Civil Rights Era.

Republicans have manufactured a successful grass-roots effort to pit the entitled white middle class against everyone else (especially the black and Latino poor) in their effort to accumulate 100% of the power.

Conservatives and libertarians are generally opposed to public libraries. If they can’t defund libraries, then arresting the staff will work (no staff, can’t open the library).

Besides, fascists like burning books.

Charlie Kirk Geopolitics Corner: Will China Bomb Taiwan Because Of Vermont Drag Show? (Wonkette)

Oh shitfuckdamn, the geopolitical crisis starts NOW, and we hate to say it, but it’s the drag queens’ fault. Which ones? All of them, obviously, but specifically some drag queens in Vermont at a football game. Pantshitting Christian Right weirdos are upset about it, that much is to be expected, but we didn’t realize there was going to be maybe World War 3, but HERE WE ARE.

Charlie Kirk explains, in one of those white cisgender male rants that he imagines comes off far tougher than it does in reality, that the drag queens in Vermont are but one way “transgender garbage” is taking over America and will somehow lead to the Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

I looked like a halloween prop by the time I got to the bathroom.

A little peroxide and then some good ole styptic sting and the bleeding stopped.

Dominionists would have us believe that God smiles upon the USA as long as our laws reflect (their interpretation of) God’s Divine Will.

The real fall, one could say free fall, commenced on Nov. 8, 2016 and while we had hoped that Nov. 3 2020 would let us start rising again — it appears that is not yet to be — we stopped falling, that is all, on Jan 20, 2021. And we are perched precariously ready to return to falling in Nov 2022, and from that fall, there may be no recovery. The only slim hope is that somehow at least 2 GOP justices are forced to leave SCOTUS before they can inflict any more damage to our Republic

ETA: And that these justices depart soon — before the end of the year — which would be a great Christmas and Hanukkah present for all lizards worldwide.

It’s pretty clear that businesses want to tout job openings but have no intention of filling them with qualified candidates at a pay that the candidates would accept. They’re still low-balling wages, all while the employees face all the risks, especially in the customer facing positions in retail, food service, etc.

One aggravating factor in the job picture is the continuing retirement of boomers. They’re leaving the workforce, and employers are not replacing them either, since those are high paying jobs and they’re pocketing the difference.

So employers keep playing the victim card while doing nothing to actually hire workers.

Most service jobs are farmed out to the gig economy.

I read about a restaurant that tried that to the extreme of treating its waiters as “free lancers” who “rented” tables from the restaurant, “bought” food from the kitchen and then pocketed the difference between that and what the customers paid them as wages…

I got Chinese food the other day from a restaurant that sent me a nice e-mail thanking me for ordering from their own site instead of one of the DoorDash/GrubHub etc services — not only do they get paid the full check, but for people who pay by credit card they get paid the same day on their site, it takes 3 or 4 days to get paid by the delivery services.

Ordered Chinese last night.

Place I ordered from has their own web site and delivery. This is the left overs. All were their “small” or regular portions. Guess you all know what I’ll be snacking on for a couple of days. :-)

To be fair, some of the comments in the thread bring up that a lot of the reason applicants are getting no response is because HR has taken to using algorithms to weed out “qualified” ones, which means unless your application meets the “requirements” to a T then it gets circular-filed and owners desperate for workers never see them.

But that just furthers the reality that major corporations are likely narrowing the list of “qualified” applicants to those who are overqualified for the jobs being applied to and thus “desperate” as opposed to rookies who are still innocent enough to believe all that “work your way up the ladder” business.

Unless the gun was being handled as part of a scene - and re-reading the follow-up, it looks like it may have been - he has no business firing even blanks at anyone, for any reason. If you’re still shocked at revelations such as these, then you need to wake the fuck up:

According to Axios, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who witnessed the exchange, recounted that “Joe said, ‘I’m comfortable with nothing,’” while “Bernie said, ‘We need to do three-and-a-half [trillion dollars].’”

“The truth is both of them are in different spots,” said Tester.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), who was also in the room, said Manchin argued, “We shouldn’t do it at all,” and that the $3.5 trillion proposal “will contribute to inflation.”

“We’ve already passed the American Rescue Plan. We should just pass the infrastructure bill and, you know, pause for six months,” Manchin reportedly argued, referring to the $1.2 trillion bipartisan legislation passed by the Senate in August before being indefinitely delayed by House progressives who insist upon first passing the reconciliation package.

The agreement was both bills were to be passed simultaneously, you sanctimonious taint stain. Fuck your concern trolling BS.

It’s outrageous, insulting and dangerous to have this being said by the President of the United States.”

So about 10 minutes ago Eartha, who had been sleeping in my arm, decided it was time to check the window and launched from my chest per her usual…but due to the heavy rain last night (and my leaving the window open) the sill had a little moisture on it, so she slipped back - one of her back claws hooking me just above the chin and carving a four inch gash down my neck. I looked like a halloween prop by the time I got to the bathroom.

A little peroxide and then some good ole styptic sting and the bleeding stopped.

Wait, you have an Eartha Katt?

Conservative ideology talks a lot about the moral value of labor, but their legislation conspires to treat it just like any other commodity: a business expense to be minimized or eliminated altogether.

Part of the American Dream is to allow people to give their children a better start in life, which means leaving them time and resources to invest in their children’s upbringing and education.

A lot of it goes back to the wingnut creation myth of America as a nation of hard-working “independent” white men who built a country, fought for their independence, tamed the wilderness, and then built it into an international juggernaut without a bit of help from anybody. That any time the federal government tried to intrude on that “independence” has only led to ruin and hardship. And that the moment the nation began to fall apart was when people “started getting paid not to work.”

Ah yes, the myth of the Yeoman Farmer, who lives independently on the 40 acres he carved out of the wilderness by the sweat of his brow (aside from some help from the government in clearing out those pesky natives) and engages in Free Trade and Commerce without government interference (except for some roads and ports and laws ensuring standard weights, measures, and help returning fugitive slaves property)…that was already an idealized myth as far back as Jefferson’s time.

Remember when Lieberman talked his own party into spiking the public option with BS arguments about how if the insurance market had to “compete” with the federal government, then it would drive the entire industry into bankruptcy and then the voters would rise up in revolt?

Yeah, that’s Manchin’s deal, he’s offering the tired old saw that conservative Dems always do about how any government aid has to be “means-tested” or have “work requirements,” otherwise the federal government is “competing” with the free market and soon nobody will work because they can just stay home and live comfortably on the dole. Which was the entire reason he spent weeks dragging his feet on the very Rescue Act he now says was grounds for killing the reconciliation bill and finding every way he could to leave it less helpful than the previous aid bills he had no problem voting for.

There was a time when “Rural State” or “Southern State” did not automatically equal “Red State”.

That is starting to change (as with Georgia), but with Democrats like Manchin and Sinema, who needs the GOP to make it impossible for people to vote for their own interests?

“Perfect” would be telling Manchin and Sinema to eat shit, then reviving the $10T bill that Senate Dem progressives wanted in the first place. Hell, even $6T would be considered “perfect” at this point. Saying that $3.5T is “perfect” and that the party’s progressive majority is wrong for holding up the “good” infrastructure bill is the sort of shit that got us the 2010 wave election. Unbelievable negligence here. I’ll bet there was no one person assigned to gun handling. If there was they were inexperienced, which is laughable in this country, that state, or in cinema production. I have seen how “guns” are handled on a set. Post Brandon Lee. The actor steps up. Gun handler (often an overqualified ex-gun instructor or military type) hands him or her the gun. The take is done, the handler reloads the blanks if any. When the scene is done the actor stays in place until the gun handler takes the gun back into safe custody/storage and the rest of the set moves on.

It seems to me everyone who touched the gun is at least partially responsible. It’s so damn easy to check. Blanks look nothing like regular ammunition. So much so some prop revolvers have fake bullets that show in the cylinder.

One of Sinema’s one-time allies, Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, declined to rule out primarying her in 2024 when asked by CNN.

“I think the sentiment that I’m hearing out there, voters in Arizona are upset with her, especially Democratic voters,” Gallego told CNN on Wednesday. “I think they support the President’s agenda, and they hope that she will, in the end, support the President’s agenda, pass reconciliation—the Build Back Better agenda.”

Many of Sinema’s Democratic counterparts in the House have also had it with her.

“There is a sense in which we no longer live in a democracy; we live under the tyranny of Kyrsten Sinema,” said liberal Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York. “I welcome the ideological diversity of the party. I can live with dissent. My colleagues and I have trouble living with what we perceive to be erraticism. The perception of erraticism is brought on by a lack of communication and clarity for where she stands.”

Here’s the story on the Baldwin set shooting. Fucking unbelievable.
Prop gun fired by Alec Baldwin in fatal shooting contained live round: union

If competence matters, hiring union is a good way to increase your odds of getting it. At least you know that someone who knows about the work is willing to vouch for the union members you have hired. Is it worth the extra cost? We should ask Alec Baldwin when, and if, he ever recovers from this.
Non union A&Ps do not touch my plane unless there is no choice or I am stranded in some hellhole where they don’t have unions. Even then I can supervise and do some work myself. I still have my A&P and my IAMAW (International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers) card.

Yes, obviously. My point is that she seems to think imprisonment should be voluntary. It isn’t, by definition. This has been something of a minor crazy string in RWNJ thinking. I’ve seen RWNJs try to invoke the presumption of innocence when some traitor is arrested, absurdly suggesting that a conviction must be obtained before an arrest can be made. It is actually part of goober outhouse folk-law that formal indictments must be secured before an arrest can be made, even in the face of compelling evidence and immediate risk.

Allowing abortion, same-sex marriage, socialist medicine & welfare, cats & dogs living together, etc., is just inviting God to turn his back on us and open up an Armageddon-sized can of Divine Smite on us.

*drily* whenever someone brings up that, I always ask why God didn’t strike people dead for indigenous genocide, land theft, man stealing, slavery, etc., etc., etc., etc. They don’t want to think about that. re: #278 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

In Texas, literally thousands of goobers are arrested every year because of their stupid misconceptions about trespass law. They think, indeed, believe with religious fervor, that there must be both a fence and signs every few feet to warn trespassers. Needless to say, there is no such requirement. The signs mean that someone is trespassing as soon as they set foot on the property. Without them, an intruder must be ordered off the property by the owner or a representative of the owner. If they then refuse to leave, they are trespassing and subject to arrest. There are also goobers who are stupid enough to suggest that the actual, literal owner (who may be a Chinese billionaire or a Wall Street tycoon) has to order them away in person; managers, tenants and security guards just don’t hack it.

Baldwin SHOULD face charges for that last fact alone, but you’re right, he’ll probably skate. Whoever was responsible for prepping that gun is going to be the fall guy for this tragic incident.

I’m thinking that Baldwin will likely face charges for involuntary manslaughter and then pleaded down to a misdemeanor with probation. And that’s not so much because he was liable (this is rather like backing a car into a child you couldn’t see and didn’t know was there), but because a conviction may be needed to get insurance to pay out to the families of victims (1 killed, 1 injured). That said, we don’t have super-good case law on this, and as someone pointed out, some important people have skated in previous cases (see Twilight Zone movie: en.wikipedia.org)

I also forgot there are movie codes involved and I have no idea what those say and I don’t know how they’re going to play into the obvious tort cases that are going to arise from this tragic incident. I know Alec Baldwin can be a terrible person, but I hope someone is keeping an eye on him. I know I would be completely tore up and not in my right mind if I accidentally killed someone.

re: #247 Targetpractice

“Perfect” would be telling Manchin and Sinema to eat shit, then reviving the $10T bill that Senate Dem progressives wanted in the first place. Hell, even $6T would be considered “perfect” at this point. Saying that $3.5T is “perfect” and that the party’s progressive majority is wrong for holding up the “good” infrastructure bill is the sort of shit that got us the 2010 wave election. You can’t keep shoveling shit on the plates of the party’s base and telling them that it’s either eat what’s on the plate or go hungry.

And the point being if that was even remotely possible, that’s what Dems might be trying to aim for. But we are constrained by the numbers we have. And the coverage and the reactions on the ground absolutely do NOT reflect that, pretending that our current margins count as ‘total control’, and that any compromise, at the start or further down the line, is a betrayal and proof the Dems don’t actually want to do anything. I already heard enough about how the 3.5T wasn’t enough at the start and how it was proof that the Dems couldn’t be trusted, and it simply snowballed, despite the fact that the hangup was 2 holdout Dems, and an entire opposition party standing lockstep athwart things.

It’s the whole Green Lantern theory where people think Dems can do anything if they willed it enough, and the fact that they don’t proves that they’re fakes and worse than the GOP. They want Biden to be the Trump of the left, casting EOs like they were Halloween candy and essentially running roughshod over rule of law, but just for the other aisle, when that’s wholly unsustainable and unrealistic, especially for what damage that can and would do to the party and its chances going forward.

And as pointed out, the reaction is never to push to vote more and increase the margins that Dems can work with, but to withhold their vote to ‘teach the Dems a lesson’ or just outright wish for the total implosion of the party so something ‘better’ can take its place. The fact that we’re not getting ‘perfect’ is proof enough for so many that the Dems are the real problem and that we should be rallying to treat Biden as the worst president ever and Dems to fail and go away.

Meanwhile, the GOP gets to be treated as the default for Governance and win just by showing up, and they’ve parlayed it into nigh-infinite power on the state and local levels because the standards for Dems are ‘perfect’ or ‘absolute failure’.

Though I quite agree with your opinion, it’s a kInda/sorta misleading headline there (Murdoch’s NYPost, so not surprising): there’s no *evidence* (outside of the union’s casual assertion) that the round in Alec Baldwin’s gun was “live” - or indeed, much real evidence of what exactly DID happen on set yesterday. But I am sure we will find out soon enough.

But yeah: a good argument for strong regulations on film/TV productions to keep these sort tragedies in the “fluke accident” category: and if it takes the unions to enforce them, so then…..

That’s largely the product of wingnut “legal experts” who will simultaneously tell you that a grand jury is a “mini-trial” that prosecutors only avoid because they know the evidence is “weak” or “circumstantial,” but then sneer that “you can indict a ham sandwich” when one is involved and an indictment secured.

re: #280 Dopamine Fish

Mrs. Fish used to do the Mary Kay thing for a very brief time. She got out of it VERY quickly when she realized how it worked: She was obligated to buy so much product every month in order to continue being an associate, I think. And when her friends and relatives stopped buying, she was saddled with a box full of product she could no longer get rid of.

Yep, that’s EXACTLY how it works. If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the series LulaRich which goes into some (but not enough for me) detail about how awful MLMs can be. One thing that the series didn’t go into was how LuLaRoe (the MLM in question) changed its compensation in either 2015 or 2016 to where it was based much less on recruiting and much more on actual product sales. LLR had to do this because, basically, they looked for all the world like a pyramid scheme with the compensation mostly based on getting people in buying $5K or $12K packages. But this change, coming at the same time as quality issues at LLR (legging fabric as thin as tissue, leggings apparently left out in the rain), pretty much caused people to flee. LLR still exists, but it’s pretty much a shadow of itself.

Meanwhile, the GOP gets to be treated as the default for Governance and win just by showing up, and they’ve parlayed it into nigh-infinite power on the state and local levels because the standards for Dems are ‘perfect’ or ‘absolute failure’.

Here’s the brass tacks: A much bally-hewed “deal” was made this past spring, that instead of forcing Manchin and Sinema (and the Dem conservatives hiding in their shadows) to take a politically hazardous vote on a $6T reconciliation bill, they’d carve out the “hard” infrastructure bits that Repubs insisted they’d support and then pass the remainder through reconciliation. At the time progressives pointed out that the Dem conservatives were gonna fuck us, that as soon as they got what they wanted they’d shitcan the rest and suddenly adopt their “fiscal conservative” robes in time for the midterms. But we were assured that no, Manchin would never fuck his own party over and Sinema would come along as soon as somebody figured out what her “price” was.

Those playing the home game may remember we got the same BS back in ‘09: The massive compromises, the warnings not to be too harsh on conservative Dems because “they might pout and refuse to back the bill,” the assurances that passing “anything” was better than going to the midterms empty-handed because we could just “fix” the ACA later. And then the bill was passed, after which the conservative Dems renounced it, renounced the president and his whole agenda, and got massacred at the polls because the party base blamed them for the whole mess.

The party is supposed to listen to the voters, not the other way around. If the voters are yelling and screaming for the reconciliation bill, the very last the party should be doing is lecturing them on how they’re asking too much and they should settle for “passing something.”

IMHO. Everyone that touches the gun and their boss. Mr Baldwin will surely be on that list, and likely not just at the point of filming. But if he trusted the gun handlers too much (now self-evident) and IF they let a live round on set that’s huge. If we see the usual, some of this early info on details is wrong.

I have a friend from Nebraska (?) who succeeded in her goal to retire before 40 without any financial assistance from her parents — who had no money to help her out:
>>she went to college on a scholarship,
>> got a degree in actuarial science,
>> went into pension work back in the day when it was profitable,
>> married a math major who became a locksmith
>> became a partner at a small actuarial firm in Chicago (where we met)
>> was a brilliant and successful consultant
>> lived modestly and saved the maximum she could
>> when the firm was acquired by another firm, made a substantial profit
>> soon retired and moved with her husband to a small town in Colorado where they have lived comfortably ever since

The key, of course, is earning enough that you can save a substantial amount of money. Most who earned her income would have been living a far more lavish lifestyle. So these stories don’t always involve assists from wealthy parents or a starting up a mega-billion dollar tech company based on innovations that few are capable of developing (or stealing).
