Good Evening Lizards. How goes it?

I took a day off from dealing with hospital/doctors/insurance company bullshit to sort of chill. Also had to deal with another ant invasion in my kitchen, which took the better part of the morning and bits and pieces of my afternoon/evening to hopefully resolve. I’m going to have to spray a barrier spray outside and a more pet friendly form/version of something indoors. The ants around here are persistent unless you poison the hell out of them and I can’t do that with a doggo who eats random crap from the yard regularly. So this isn’t my first time having fun with this. Ack. Yay. Fun.

Hope you all are doing well today and not dealing with ants. Or worse.

As Austin Blue said, depends on what’s under it. A painted or properly prepared (with sizing) wall and you should be able to strip it. (Roll a doohicky with little pointy bits all over it and steam or apply wallpaper stripper.) Unfortunately, occasionally wallpaper goes up over bare drywall. This leaves you removing bits of wallpaper (and the underlying paper on the wallboard) with tweezers and leaves a rather rough surface. You can skim coat it with drywall compound or just go over it with “texture paint”.
You can prime and paint over most wallpaper, but in my limited experience, it will never be perfect.

Over 30 years ago my husband and I were hiking in Death Valley in October; the temperature was in the mid’80’s and I became very dehydrated; fortunately it was a relatively short hike and, unlike me, my husband kept himself properly hydrated. The Mariposa Lily is correct.

Beware if there is any metallic paint on the wallpaper. It will have to be removed or covered by new dry wall. It will never take paint, even if it is primed. “Scabrous texture” will be your legacy.

It’s 9 months of having someone else prepare all your meals and clean your rooms, while having complete control of your schedule (time to awaken, time to sleep, time to dine), including spending the day in bed if you so choose. Designed obviously for affluent retirees. It actually sounds boring but if you were planning on writing a novel, it might provide the right ambiance for working on the project.

I can imagine numerous scenarios. For example, there was debris in the barrel (similar to the Brandon Lee incident) that was propelled to the side rather than straight forward. Or the director of photography was looking at a shot angle from downrange when the gun fired. Or the gun flew apart when fired, etc.

It may have been a close-up of Baldwin shooting toward the camera, with the cinematographer and the director immediately behind the camera.

Michael Massee (who played Funboy in The Crow and who was the person who fired the squib load that killed Brandon Lee) was so distraught, he didn’t work for a year or so:

In the scene preceding the fatal scene, the gun was loaded with improperly-made dummy rounds, cartridges from which the special-effects crew had removed the powder charges, so in close-ups the revolver would show normal-looking bullets. However, the crew neglected to remove the primers from the cartridges. At some point before the fatal event, one of the rounds had been fired; although there was no powder charge, the energy from the fired primer was enough to push the bullet into the gun barrel, where it got stuck (a condition known as a squib load). TL;DR, it was about Christian influence over the federal government.

On Tuesday, October 19, Jeff Fortenberry was indicted on three federal charges connected to his receiving and then lying about illegal campaign contributions funneled from Nigerian billionaire Gilbert Chagoury through conduits.

Early reporting by the national media claimed that Chagoury told prosecutors he had been advised to select representatives from low population states, where his money would wield more influence. While Chagoury may have said this to prosecutors, this is not the reason he chose Fortenberry as a donation target, nor did Fortenberry accept the money merely because it was offered.

Both Chagoury and Fortenberry have a shared passion: aiding Christians-specifically Catholics-in religious minority communities around the globe. In fact, this seems to be one of Fortenberry’s only persistent interests, and it appears to be the top policy concern of Chagoury.

I found a nice cotton shirt/jacket in the closet today. I thought somebody left it here when they visited, so score! The crapfest involving the Gillette, Wyo. Public Library continues, including trying to prosecute the library director for “promoting pornography to minors” (KSID-AM, Sidney, Nebr.)

GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) — Commissioners of a Wyoming county have suspended all in-person public comment at their meetings amid a furor over library books involving sex and LGBTQ issues.

Campbell County commissioners in recent months have heard hours of public comment about the books in the teen and children’s sections of the county library in Gillette.

Starting with a meeting Tuesday, they suspended public comment at meetings, saying they would still accept letters, emails and phone calls, the Gillette News Record reported.

Public comments have “devolved into a session of bullying and threatening our board of commissioners, the library board and library staff,” Commissioner D.G. Reardon said at the meeting.

Library officials need time to complete their process for reviewing contested books, commission Chairman Bob Maul said.

Meanwhile, prosecutors continue to consider possible criminal charges against library officials for making certain books accessible to juveniles after a couple brought five books to the attention of law enforcement.

The books are “This Book is Gay” by Juno Dawson, “How Do You Make a Baby” by Anna Fiske, “Doing It” by Hannah Witton, “Sex is a Funny Word” by Cory Silverberg, and “Dating and Sex: A Guide for the 21st Century Teen Boy” by Andrew P. Smiler.

Each year I start my winter beard a bit earlier than the year before. Last year I started in mid-September. This year I started in August. It is already at the stage where my natural hair wave makes it impossible to brush it out to where it looks symmetrical. It’s fucking lopsided and I have to resist trimming it until it gets past this stage. It will self-correct but it drives me crazy in the meantime. I want to trim it back but then a month later it’ll do the same thing again. Resist!

So about 10 minutes ago Eartha, who had been sleeping in my arm, decided it was time to check the window and launched from my chest per her usual…but due to the heavy rain last night (and my leaving the window open) the sill had a little moisture on it, so she slipped back - one of her back claws hooking me just above the chin and carving a four inch gash down my neck. I looked like a halloween prop by the time I got to the bathroom.

A little peroxide and then some good ole styptic sting and the bleeding stopped.

The real fall, one could say free fall, commenced on Nov. 8, 2016 and while we had hoped that Nov. 3 2020 would let us start rising again — it appears that is not yet to be — we stopped falling, that is all, on Jan 20, 2021. And we are perched precariously ready to return to falling in Nov 2022, and from that fall, there may be no recovery. The only slim hope is that somehow at least 2 GOP justices are forced to leave SCOTUS before they can inflict any more damage to our Republic

ETA: And that these justices depart soon — before the end of the year — which would be a great Christmas and Hanukkah present for all lizards worldwide.

They’re still low-balling wages, all while the employees face all the risks, especially in the customer facing positions in retail, food service, etc.

One aggravating factor in the job picture is the continuing retirement of boomers. They’re leaving the workforce, and employers are not replacing them either, since those are high paying jobs and they’re pocketing the difference.

So employers keep playing the victim card while doing nothing to actually hire workers.

I got Chinese food the other day from a restaurant that sent me a nice e-mail thanking me for ordering from their own site instead of one of the DoorDash/GrubHub etc services — not only do they get paid the full check, but for people who pay by credit card they get paid the same day on their site, it takes 3 or 4 days to get paid by the delivery services.

Ordered Chinese last night.

Place I ordered from has their own web site and delivery. This is the left overs. All were their “small” or regular portions. Guess you all know what I’ll be snacking on for a couple of days. :-)

Odds are that it was loaded with prop round for a close up, prop master put in a blank, and forgot to remove the prop round. Blanks have powder charge, and it propelled the prop round as if a real bullet.

It’s how Brandon Lee died. Basic safety protocols on set were not followed.

To be fair, some of the comments in the thread bring up that a lot of the reason applicants are getting no response is because HR has taken to using algorithms to weed out “qualified” ones, which means unless your application meets the “requirements” to a T then it gets circular-filed and owners desperate for workers never see them.

But that just furthers the reality that major corporations are likely narrowing the list of “qualified” applicants to those who are overqualified for the jobs being applied to and thus “desperate” as opposed to rookies who are still innocent enough to believe all that “work your way up the ladder” business.

I don’t know Baldwin’s expertise with weapons. An actor would normally rely on whoever prepped the gun and may have no personal knowledge of how to determine whether a cartridge is real.

Remember when Lieberman talked his own party into spiking the public option with BS arguments about how if the insurance market had to “compete” with the federal government, then it would drive the entire industry into bankruptcy and then the voters would rise up in revolt?

Yeah, that’s Manchin’s deal, he’s offering the tired old saw that conservative Dems always do about how any government aid has to be “means-tested” or have “work requirements,” otherwise the federal government is “competing” with the free market and soon nobody will work because they can just stay home and live comfortably on the dole. Which was the entire reason he spent weeks dragging his feet on the very Rescue Act he now says was grounds for killing the reconciliation bill and finding every way he could to leave it less helpful than the previous aid bills he had no problem voting for.

Unbelievable negligence here. I’ll bet there was no one person assigned to gun handling. If there was they were inexperienced, which is laughable in this country, that state, or in cinema production. I have seen how “guns” are handled on a set. Post Brandon Lee. The actor steps up. Gun handler (often an overqualified ex-gun instructor or military type) hands him or her the gun. The take is done, the handler reloads the blanks if any. When the scene is done the actor stays in place until the gun handler takes the gun back into safe custody/storage and the rest of the set moves on.

It seems to me everyone who touched the gun is at least partially responsible. It’s so damn easy to check. Blanks look nothing like regular ammunition. So much so some prop revolvers have fake bullets that show in the cylinder.

In Texas, literally thousands of goobers are arrested every year because of their stupid misconceptions about trespass law. They think, indeed, believe with religious fervor, that there must be both a fence and signs every few feet to warn trespassers. Needless to say, there is no such requirement. The signs mean that someone is trespassing as soon as they set foot on the property. Without them, an intruder must be ordered off the property by the owner or a representative of the owner. If they then refuse to leave, they are trespassing and subject to arrest. There are also goobers who are stupid enough to suggest that the actual, literal owner (who may be a Chinese billionaire or a Wall Street tycoon) has to order them away in person; managers, tenants and security guards just don’t hack it.

I’m thinking that Baldwin will likely face charges for involuntary manslaughter and then pleaded down to a misdemeanor with probation. And that’s not so much because he was liable (this is rather like backing a car into a child you couldn’t see and didn’t know was there), but because a conviction may be needed to get insurance to pay out to the families of victims (1 killed, 1 injured). That said, we don’t have super-good case law on this, and as someone pointed out, some important people have skated in previous cases (see Twilight Zone movie: en.wikipedia.org)

I also forgot there are movie codes involved and I have no idea what those say and I don’t know how they’re going to play into the obvious tort cases that are going to arise from this tragic incident. I know Alec Baldwin can be a terrible person, but I hope someone is keeping an eye on him. I know I would be completely tore up and not in my right mind if I accidentally killed someone.

Though I quite agree with your opinion, it’s a kInda/sorta misleading headline there (Murdoch’s NYPost, so not surprising): there’s no *evidence* (outside of the union’s casual assertion) that the round in Alec Baldwin’s gun was “live” - or indeed, much real evidence of what exactly DID happen on set yesterday. But I am sure we will find out soon enough.

But yeah: a good argument for strong regulations on film/TV productions to keep these sort tragedies in the “fluke accident” category: and if it takes the unions to enforce them, so then…..

Yep, that’s EXACTLY how it works. If you have Amazon Prime, you can watch the series LulaRich which goes into some (but not enough for me) detail about how awful MLMs can be. One thing that the series didn’t go into was how LuLaRoe (the MLM in question) changed its compensation in either 2015 or 2016 to where it was based much less on recruiting and much more on actual product sales. LLR had to do this because, basically, they looked for all the world like a pyramid scheme with the compensation mostly based on getting people in buying $5K or $12K packages. But this change, coming at the same time as quality issues at LLR (legging fabric as thin as tissue, leggings apparently left out in the rain), pretty much caused people to flee. LLR still exists, but it’s pretty much a shadow of itself.

Here’s the brass tacks: A much bally-hewed “deal” was made this past spring, that instead of forcing Manchin and Sinema (and the Dem conservatives hiding in their shadows) to take a politically hazardous vote on a $6T reconciliation bill, they’d carve out the “hard” infrastructure bits that Repubs insisted they’d support and then pass the remainder through reconciliation. At the time progressives pointed out that the Dem conservatives were gonna fuck us, that as soon as they got what they wanted they’d shitcan the rest and suddenly adopt their “fiscal conservative” robes in time for the midterms. But we were assured that no, Manchin would never fuck his own party over and Sinema would come along as soon as somebody figured out what her “price” was.

Those playing the home game may remember we got the same BS back in ‘09: The massive compromises, the warnings not to be too harsh on conservative Dems because “they might pout and refuse to back the bill,” the assurances that passing “anything” was better than going to the midterms empty-handed because we could just “fix” the ACA later. And then the bill was passed, after which the conservative Dems renounced it, renounced the president and his whole agenda, and got massacred at the polls because the party base blamed them for the whole mess.

The party is supposed to listen to the voters, not the other way around. If the voters are yelling and screaming for the reconciliation bill, the very last the party should be doing is lecturing them on how they’re asking too much and they should settle for “passing something.”

LOL! Yesterday on the am news radio I heard the attorney for Ridley Thomas mutter the exact same excuse after his troubles. Very local story, he is (was) a City Council member here in Los Angeles. Indicted Oct13 in federal court for bribery and conspiracy.

IMHO. Everyone that touches the gun and their boss. Mr Baldwin will surely be on that list, and likely not just at the point of filming. I have a friend from Nebraska (?) who succeeded in her goal to retire before 40 without any financial assistance from her parents — who had no money to help her out:
