The sort of thing that should make a person seem human and relatable instead is used as “proof” that he is a “loser”. What a sad political climate we live in.

Trump goes golfing at his own private courses virtually every weekend, media either avoids the topic or mumbles about how “stressful” the job is.

Biden goes back home to give a stump speech, media declares he’s avoiding the job and suggests he’s hiding away from voters.

Because the media is big on politics as performance art. Hence why they loved Trump so much, because he’d make a big production that was total smoke and mirrors, but it gave the media something to photograph and film, so they treated it as if it were genuine. Like how they treated his standing next to stacks of blank paper in unmarked folders as significant because he insisted it was so.

“…In a poll of restaurant workers from earlier this year, eight in 10 said that they had experienced hostile behavior from customers who didn’t want to follow COVID-19 safety protocols. About half said they were considering leaving their jobs, and of that group, four in 10 said this was because of customer hostility and harassment.

To work in the service industry in the era of COVID is to subject yourself to the most dehumanizing, thankless, stressful work environments short of working in a sex dungeon. Especially if you’re one of those who was dubbed as “essential” at the beginning of the whole mess, only to quickly realize that being “essential” just meant they couldn’t keep the place open if they fired you. It never meant anything like higher pay, better benefits, or even a modicum of respect.

Someone pointed out that today, October 22, is the 177th anniversary of the Great Disappointment, the belief that swept the settled US in the late 1830s and the first half of the 1840s. Basically, Baptist preacher taught that Jesus was going to come back, based on some formula he dug out of linking various Bible passages together.

Obviously, Jesus didn’t come back on October 22, 1844, and the Millerites first seemed doomed to the dustbin of history, but followers of this belief came up with ways to explain why it didn’t happen. Out of this came the Seventh Day Adventists and their many many offshoots, including the Waco Branch Davidians.

One could argue that other millenarian groups that set dates (e.g., Jehovah’s Witnesses, Harold Camping, others too many to count) are offshoots of this Great Disappointment.

Or the women who will be killed and maimed because of it.

I’ve already decided my public action (besides whatever I do to help women needing abortions, which may just be money, unless there is a need to drive women to California) is going to be bringing body bags to protest in front of the church near my house where the pastor wants to execute women who obtain abortions.

Oh yeah, guess who is now going to church there? RON WATKINS. Yes, THAT Ron Watkins.

If QAnon’s grip on the Arizona GOP wasn’t clear already, Ron Watkins made it so last week, when the Q figurehead announced that he is running for Congress in Arizona.

Watkins’ candidacy is far-fetched, to put it lightly; although he’s built a major following online, he has never held any kind of elected office, and it’s not clear if he’s ever lived in the state. But his campaign does appear to draw on local inspiration — from Jeff Durbin, an extremist pastor in Mesa who has built his church into a sprawling media organization and national anti-abortion lobbying group.

In Watkins’ initial video announcing his bid to unseat Democrat Tom O’Halleran (“the dirtiest Democrat in the D.C. swamp,” Watkins said), he cited a recent sermon that Durbin gave at Apologia Church in Mesa.

Durbin convinced him, Watkins said, “to double down with God as my compass to take this fight to the swamp of Washington D.C.”

*snip*

Durbin distanced himself from Watkins, however, when New Times inquired about his candidacy. Although Watkins has been attending sermons, Durbin says, “he is not a member of Apologia Church,” and, furthermore, the church, as a practice, would not endorse political candidates. As for QAnon, Durbin calls the movement “destructive and embarrassing.”

phoenixnewtimes.com

I think it might be time, now that the weather is better, to hit Apologia church for Sunday afternoon picketing. Not with body bags yet, but to point out that Ron Watkins ran a scam.

ETA and also to remind people that Jeff Durbin wants to murder women who have obtained abortions, which is somewhere in the neighborhood of 32 million American women.

The Constitution of the United States grants many of the powers of an absolute monarch to the President, a single individual — pardons, patronage, warmaking, immunity from prosecution etc. All democracies with a actual monarch as Head of State accord them no political powers and their own elected heads of government (Prime Ministers, Chancellors etc.) rule only at the behest of a political coalition which can and often does rein them in when they overstep their bounds.

The jury also convicted his co-defendant Andrey Kukushkin, whom prosecutors also accused of funneling oligarch Andrey Muraviev’s money into U.S. elections in order to facilitate their cannabis businesses. Jurors returned guilty verdicts on all charges of a six-count indictment.

A key figure in Donald Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, Parnas became a national figure after cooperating with Democratic-controlled House committees probing the former president’s dealings in Ukraine. Arrested two years ago with his reputed sidekick Igor Fruman, Parnas was the only one of the case’s four co-defendants to embark on a full court press counteroffensive dishing the then-Trump administration’s secrets in Ukraine, Venezuela and Turkey. His name was mentioned more than 100 times in the House impeachment report.

This was by design. Alexander Hamilton explicitly wanted to make the President an elective King, and originally proposed _lifetime_ terms for the President, only removable by impeachment.

And in the actual constitution, war is supposed to be declared by Congress not by the President. The ability of Presidents to react to ongoing attacks and direct wars after Congress has declared wars has been twisted into effectively undeclared war by Presidents.

We tried the other way and found a president with no authority couldn’t govern. The immunity from prosecution while President is meant to deter political prosecution, but is meant to be balanced by impeachment and conviction. This still does not match a monarch who could only be removed by revolution.

Woo Hoo! Welcome on the crazy ride!

Interesting thread.

If this is correct, we have lots of stuff coming in to the country. But it cannot get into or out of Long Beach port due to the complete foul up regarding containers.

1. The trucking trailers (container chassis) needed to haul full containers are tied up holding empty containers.

2. But the empty containers cannot be put on container ships. Because the container ships need to offload their filled containers. And there is no further space to store filled, or empty containers in the port.

3. But there aren’t any trucking trailers available to haul off the filled containers, because (see #1)

And, as part of tfg’s failed trade war, we have imposed a massive tariff on importing new trucking container chassis.

Well why not? They’ve pretty much eliminated democratic representation and abortion. SCOTUS has done Jack to stop them.

Except on rare occasions (and don’t forget they didn’t hear Trump suits to overthrow the election and they did right by the ACA), the current SCOTUS will do evil on almost all major cases. If only Thomas, Alito, and Kavanaugh could be struck by a bolt of lightning, or at least have federal charges that force them to depart the bench. Maybe Thomas involvement with his wife’s role on January 6? Kavanaugh with some financial irregularity? Alito because he is terrible beyond words, and maybe involvement with January 6?

Project Stardust: A Photographer Scours Rooftops Across the Globe for Minuscule Cosmic Particles
thisiscolossal.com

According to Olso-based photographer and researcher Jon Larsen, the most exotic particles from across the universe are likely hiding in a rain gutter or scattered among debris on rooftops. Larsen, who works in the geosciences department at the University of Oslo, has been at the forefront of micrometeorite discovery since 2009 when “a shiny black dot suddenly appeared on my white veranda table while I was having strawberries for breakfast.”

The photos are fascinating: the burnt dot on the dust dot of unbelievably ancient particles blows my mind.

Scientists at the University of Utah (UoU) and Spain’s Miguel Hernandez University have given artificial vision to a blind woman through a brain implant. Surgeons implanted the Utah Electrode Array (UEA) into Berna Gómez’s visual cortex; she wore eyeglasses with a video camera, and software encoded and transmitted the camera’s visual data to the UEA. The array stimulated neurons to generate phosphenes, seen as white points of light, to produce an image. Gómez successfully identified lines, shapes, and simple letters evoked by different stimulation patterns. UoU’s Dr. Eduardo Fernández said, “These results are very exciting because they demonstrate both safety and efficacy.” Fernández added, “We have taken a significant step forward, showing the potential of these types of devices to restore functional vision for people who have lost their vision.”

The Bollingers aligned themselves with right-wing supporters of former President Donald Trump — establishing a Super PAC to push what they call “medical freedom,” participating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and promoting lies like the assertion that the election was stolen from Trump.

Something like 40% or more of those here illegally are on visa overstays, not because they crossed the border.

You can’t stop visa overstays with a militarized border. In fact, the militarization of the border has caused more illegal immigration, not less. It means more people are stuck on both sides with hard choices in ability to get back and forth.

Visa overstays? Yeah, Congress could fix that with more immigration judges. Same with improving other immigration issues.

Want to deal with the border? Start with Congressional inaction.

Congress could have solved this years ago, but the GOP blocked it from enactment because they saw it as a wedge issue to keep in their hip pocket.

My question is a ‘chicken or egg’ situation. Do right wing clicks actually create more revenue and thus get preferential treatment? Or are they getting more clicks because they’ve gotten privileged treatment and are basically promoted by the algorithm? I seem to remember some years back that even before it was apparent that social media was tapping into right-wing outrage that many Facebook execs were heavily pushing to promote conservative outlets above all else.

My problems with it became obvious when you had to remove the outer liner and wash it and replace it of the inner liner. I can’t do that kind of complex maintenance. Otherwise, the weighted blanket idea is amazing.

Two Dune related stories:

1. My sister told me this evening that her girl friend who has lived in Madrid since the 70’s saw the film with her husband in a Madrid theater back on Sept 29th and both of them loved it. Few customers were attending and all but one wore a mask.

2. An acquaintance who is currently visiting Dallas for a BBQ competition called earlier today and told me that a friend of his who lives in Waco rented out a movie theater there to show the film and he was joining him. My acquaintance then posted on FB tonight that he loved the movie. Full disclosure: He was a big fan of the original 1984 film .

Not sure what everyone else’s experience with weighted blankets are, but I started using one this week, and have seen a marked difference and improvement in my sleep. Far less restless sleeping, and waking up more rested, which is a pretty impressive thing all things considered.

I got a 12 pound weight twin blanket, and the mrs has her own. We also have a regular comforter to go along with it.

Definitely not a fad. There’s definitely something to it.

I didn’t get one, but I have discovered i sleep better with an extra blanket on my legs for the weight.

I’ve been using one for a couple of years now when my anxiety and panic disorder gets bad. They are amazing. I was very skeptical at first, but they were developed for autistic kids initially, and lots of parents swore by them. Best purchase I made for myself in years. The key is for the blanket to be no more than 10 percent of your body weight to be comfortable and for kids it’s a safety thing too.

MSNBC’s Ari Melber had Historian Tim Snyder on Friday evening. Snyder studies how countries turn authoritarian.

Melber asked Snyder if Snyder thought it possible that the US might go down that path. Snyder replied that it is ongoing right now.

Snyder also mentioned “The Administrative State”, which he described as a Russian concept. Basically Snyder described it as the idea that voting was one thing. But that “The Administrative State” is what counts the votes and determines the vote results.

All I could think of was the Herodotus quote:

“The most hateful torment for men is to have knowledge of everything but power over nothing.”

(Basically, to know what is going to happen, but not to be able to do anything about.)

John Denver - Darcy Farrow (from The Wildlife Concert)

Reportedly a true story.

Well, except that she didn’t fall off her pony, she was actually kicked in the head.

And that Vandemeer did not commit suicide. In fact he didn’t exist.

Because Darcy Farrow was 12 years old at the time. And actually she recovered.

By the way, her name was actually Darcy Gillette. And it probably did not happen in Nevada at all.

But other than that, it’s a true story.

24 to 48 inches of snow possible on I-80 at Donner Pass.

Dude.

I was snowshoeing at Echo Summit one winter and overnight we got 48” of snow. As we slept in the tent the snow buried it, as we moved we packed the snow above us. By morning we were trying to sleep under about 200 lbs of snow each. we had to swim through the snow to undo the tent tie-downs, it took 30 minutes to find our snowshoes, hiking out we sank 2 feet into the snow and each time we lifted our foot there was a foot of snow on our snowshoes. Finally we got to a road that was plowed the day before and was much easier to walk on. That’s the closest to death I’ve been. I caught my socks on fire in front of the fireplace at the tavern on the highway. My feet were frozen and I couldn’t feel the heat. took off my socks and I had ice between my toes.

So then we had to dig out the Suburban that had been buried from snowplow spray. We dug and dug this 8 foot mound of snow only to find out it was a Yugo, then we looked down the road to this 16 foot mound of snow. Yep, “mother fucker.” It took hours of digging and a $20 bill to the plowman to plow out in front so we had less to dig.

Dread Pirate Ron  Oct 22, 2021 • 10:42:37pm

re: #244 Dread Pirate Ron

First off, YES it is leather. What our manufacturer has done is taken a nice supple hide and laminated a black nylon weave to the top that has a herringbone pattern that matches true carbon fiber. Why didn’t they use real carbon? Simple, when real carbon fiber was tried as a laminate, it had a tendency to fray and scuff. This eventually left it looking like an old sweater with those funky little fuzzy things all over it. The custom made black nylon doesn’t do that and holds up very well to constant use.

At least until some idiot finds out why there was a 2 container limit to stacking.

There’s an old saying about red tape, that’s it’s red because it’s dyed in blood.

How strong are the pads the containers are being stacked on? Are they just compacted dirt or are they well-laid reinforced concrete, properly levelled? Are the pads strong enough to cope with a six-high stack of containers? Has the ground moved since it was laid out (and what happens if there’s an earthquake?)? Does the facility have mobile cranes that can safely lift containers to stack them six-high? Are the crane operators trained to do this safely while other people on the ground are moving around nearby?

I presume the six-high stack exemption will be limited to empty containers (which weigh about 2.5 tonnes each) just to get them out of the way for the moment. That is still risky but maybe the site operators won’t end up killing or crippling a bunch of people. Maybe.

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Less than a week after Gov. Pete Ricketts said there weren’t enough votes to call a special session of the Unicameral to discuss vaccination mandates, 26 Nebraska state senators are doing just that.

State Sen. Ben Hansen and Robert Clements sent an email to their fellow senators asking them to support legislation banning government and educational entities in Nebraska from installing COVID-19 vaccine mandates. A similar ban signed into law in Iowa has prompted an ongoing legal battle with the ACLU of Iowa and a mother in Council Bluffs.

The Nebraska state senators, who are looking for enough support to call a special legislative session, say their goal is to protect workers from losing their jobs over such mandates.

State Sen. Carol Blood, who announced last month that she would seek the Democratic nomination for governor, responded to the request asking that the senators also remove the legislation that makes Nebraska an “at-will” employment state.

“You can’t cherry-pick which part of that policy you want to honor and which part you don’t. If you are concerned about workers’ rights, you must be concerned about all of their rights including protecting LGBTQ rights.”
State Sen. Carol Blood

(more at WOWT-TV, Omaha)

Nebraska senators looking for special session on COVID-19 vaccine mandates

My state senator (Steve Erdman, District 47) is one of those who signed this crap letter for a special session. Twenty-six senators have signed it; it takes thirty-three to call a special session.

This crap is in the letter:

We want to be clear in the intent of calling this special session. It is not to affect mask mandates, question the science of vaccines, prevent schools from mandating current vaccinations to attend K-12 school, support the effectiveness of alternative treatments, say whether vaccines in general are good or bad or to consider any other non-relevant topics. It is solely to discuss and adopt legislation to prohibit employers from mandating COVID-19 vaccines and legislation to prohibit governmental and/or educational entities from mandating COVID-19 vaccines as a condition of receiving services.

If you want to ban vaccination mandates, you are questioning the science of vaccines. The Republican senators are lying to themselves as well as the public.

A firestorm ignited across the state, as the governor tries to mess with Nebraska’s socialist electric system.

Obscure state board seeks more authority over Nebraska public power districts (Omaha World-Herald)

TL;DR:

The board in question is the Nebraska Power Review Board, which has five members all appointed by the governor. Its purpose is to approve or deny the construction of new power plants, and decommissioning existing ones (such as coal-fired plants).

Public Power Districts have been moving away constructing new plants, in favour of buying electricity from privately-owend wind farms. Such contracts are not subject to the Power Review Board.

The leader of the board thinks it should extend its authority over those contracts.

The leader of the association representing all the public power districts, plus the elected heads of Omaha and Panhandle Public Power Districts, along with the Sierra Club, think this is a power-grab to take away local elected boards’ decision-making ability on where public power districts obtain their power (particularly wind, which is practically non-existent in Nebraska /s). To environmentalists, this looks like Pete Ricketts trying to promote coal and natural gas over wind.

The Power Review Board leader says they are concerned that by entering into such contracts, the public power districts could run into problems like Texas and Oklahoma faced over the bitter cold last winter. The difference is our public power districts actually winterise equipment; as it turns out, it occassionally gets cold here.

I was just reading the Asahi newspaper and saw that Japanese toilet maker Toto has proclaimed Nov. 10 as “Good Toilet” day (there’s a way that the numbers 11/10 can be read/said as “good toilet” in Japanese). Then they held a kind of haiku contest (technically, these humorous poems are called senryū).They’ve partnered with a toilet paper maker to print the winning poems on toilet paper with entries that can be translated like:

Got out of the bath
Then I had to take a dump
I feel so wronged

(better in the original Japanese)

Anyway, I want toilet paper with funny haiku.

Heh…Trump’s new social media site is copy/paste code from Mastodon.

[Embedded content]

Holy hell…

Mastodon founder and lead developer Eugen Rochko told Vice that based on the screenshots he’s seen floating around social media, Truth Social “absolutely is based on Mastodon”—and its claims to be based on proprietary software when it really isn’t would amount to “a license violation.” He even discovered another smoking gun—a 404 page using Mastodon’s mascot.

Rochko told Talking Points Memo that he is seeking legal counsel on the matter. If he does sue, Trump wouldn’t have a leg to stand on. Claiming that his site’s code is proprietary despite overwhelming evidence that it isn’t? Did he seriously think no one would sniff this out? Suffice to say that if Rochko does take Trump to court, he could really draw blood.

Someone in the replies was all like “this way they don’t have to pay a good salary.”

So I went and look the salaries up:

The average estimated annual salary, including base and bonus, at Spanx is $112,451, or $54 per hour, while the estimated median salary is $112,461, or $54 per hour.

At Spanx, the highest paid job is a General Counsel at $220,438 annually and the lowest is an Admin Assistant at $45,227 annually. Average Spanx salaries by department include: Marketing at $102,475, Business Development at $96,175, Legal at $220,438, and Admin at $53,026. Half of Spanx salaries are above $112,461.

Oh, bugger.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday he had ordered the foreign ministry to declare 10 ambassadors from Western countries ‘persona non grata’ for calling for the release of philanthropist Osman Kavala.

Kavala has been in prison since late 2017, charged with financing nationwide protests in 2013 and with involvement in a 2016 failed coup. He denies the charges.

In a joint statement on Oct. 18, the ambassadors of Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, New Zealand and the United States called for a just and speedy resolution to Kavala’s case. They were summoned by the foreign ministry, which called the statement irresponsible.

Public in the sense of being traded on stock exchanges. Bring a “friend”?

In 1972, my family was driving to IL from CA. We picked up hitchhikers. We had hitchhikers for lunch at Donner Pass.

From the article:

A participant on the call, Michigan state Sen. Ed McBroom (R), recalled listening as Trump, Giuliani, Eastman and others described the power state legislators have over the certification of electors. “I didn’t need any convincing about our plenary powers,” McBroom told The Post. “I was listening to hear whether they had any evidence to substantiate claims” of significant voter fraud that could change the results in Michigan. The callers did not provide additional information, he said, and he did not support a delay in the electoral vote count.

As we know, the GOP usually projects their crimes onto others. So my question, is it possible that the Trump consiglieres were confident about stealing because they did in fact “steal” many votes, perhaps enough to affect the outcome in other races? Most of the cases brought to light were one-off situations but a sufficient number of these can change results. Let’s never forget the 2018 North Carolina election fraud case in a Congressional race.

There isn’t really enough evidence to support that. I strongly suspect that they tried, or made plans to try, but I have little doubt that we would have seen abundant evidence of large-scale voter fraud from pissed-off Democrats if they had actually gone through with it.

On the trip back to CA from IL, we picked up a pair of young men traveling to San Francisco from their native Montana. We had them with us for a whole day, then spent the night at a roadside rest stop, camped separately. They got up early but were still on the on-ramp when we got all packed up to leave. We picked them up again. Seven kids, 16 yrs. and younger, plus a dog. Mom at the wheel. Camped at another rest stop the next night. They were up VERY early, and politely turned down a third day with us. Wade and Byron. I hope they enjoyed SF.
