San Diego County is up to 80.5% fully vaccinated (12+), which is why our ICUs are not stressed.

However, the rate of newly vaccinated people has slowed tremendously. The holdouts are likely to remain so forever, I guess.

Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) Sends Historic Legacy Mahogany to Help Restore U.S. Capitol

“…On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, the U.S. Capitol building was the target of an attack that left it ransacked and vandalized. The destruction of many irreplaceable historical wooden artifacts and objects, including doors, intricate millwork, moldings, desks, and podiums, was extensive.”
…….

Tucked in a dark, remote storage stall in FPL’s basement, a stack of priceless historic mahogany lumber had waited under a layer of dust since 1919 for seemingly just this moment. Ross and an FPL crew dug out the treasure and began facilitating the transfer of 78 of the 11.9 inch-by-12 foot mahogany boards.

Starting in June, this wood will be used to aid in the repair of the Capitol.

The 3,000-lb. stack of lumber is incalculably valuable. Today, mahogany has protected international conservation status and the high quality, clear old-growth mahogany originally used in the Capitol building is no longer available.”

Apparently it’s one of the neighborhood cats that we’ve known hangs around our outdoor cat’s food bowl occasionally. Mrs. Fish is hanging out downstairs, she had the door open for our outdoor cat to come in/go out and this cat must’ve shown up, recognized the scent, and decided to enjoy the warmth.

That is what my Pippi did. She walked up to door in a snowstorm and spoke. I opened the door and asked her if she wanted to come in? She did, strolled into the living room and stretched out, talking all the while.

welp, I guess “freedom” from racing regulations has a price

The crash occurred Saturday afternoon at an event called “Airport Race Wars 2” at the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport, police said in a news release. The organized event involved drivers speeding down a runway as they competed for cash.

The driver “lost control and left the runway, crashing into parked vehicles and striking spectators who were observing the races,” Kerville police said.

Area High School Cancels Play

“She Kills Monsters” was written by Qui Nguyen and premiered in New York in 2011.

Set in Athens, Ohio, it tells the story of a young woman whose 15-year-old sister dies in a car crash.

Attempting to learn more about her dead sister, the woman discovers her Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which alludes to her having a girlfriend and possibly being gay.

It’s become one of the most widely produced plays at the high school and college levels in the last five years.

The cancellation at Hillsboro came a week after some parents confronted the play’s directors in a meeting, which also included local pastor Jeff Lyle of the nearby church Good News Gathering.

Like Trump’s Jan 6 “Beer Hall Putsch”, the original November 1923 one failed and the instigator went to prison. We know how well that worked out for the world.

There have to be consequences for all those involved — not just Trump— and the penalties must be severe, and that must include both John Eastman and Cleta Mitchell; indeed the entire Federalist Society must be declared a criminal organization and disbanded.

I read Dune after seeing both the Lynch and SciFi versions of it, and it was far easier to follow than I assume it would have been without those (imperfect, but OK) guides. I still haven’t had time to watch the new one. I don’t feel that movie theaters are safe enough yet*, and I haven’t had a few hours of free time that matched with the huge TV in the living room being free yet. I live in one of the last bastions of epidemic sanity, with new infections down to about five per day (of a population of 120,000). Mask discipline is good. So I feel safe shopping and such, and even dine indoors when there’s minimal crowding (you need to show proof of vaccination to dine indoors). I’m not ready yet to sit in a crowded movie theatre yet, though. (I’ve been to the opera and theatre performances, but somehow a movie is different.)

Singing with my chorus is the first big step for me spending time indoors with other people.

However, we are all vaccinated, we all wear masks, and we socially distance. It’s as safe as we can get doing something that’s not very safe.

I will not do movies, concerts, restaurants, etc. knowing there will be anti vaxx/mask people there.

If you were rich enough, you could rent out a whole theater to safely watch the movie on the big screen….

Noticed that there is a great amount of gnashing of teeth in the reviews of the latest crop of TV offerings.

Invasion has set off many of the incels - why I am not sure but perhaps because there are too many brown people ? As a TV show it is not for the young male looking for bloodsport.

Foundation has some people up in arms. Don’t know why, really. I think those who are in pain over the fact that the series doesn’t follow Asimov’s stories exactly are not that many, though they are making noises.

Maybe it’s not as expensive as you’d think to rent a theater during off-prime hours, especially now that so many of us are reluctant to attend cinema in person. For the price to be reasonable you may need a group of 20+ friends. Here’s a link discussing the process for AMC: amctheatres.com

Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro. Yeah, upgrading an obsolete (but liked) OS to a soon to be obsolete (and despised) OS. I hung on as long as I could, but time finally caught up with me. The writing was writ large on the wall, but I’m a stick in the mud when it comes to things like OS upgrades. The laptop I’m currently using is Win 10 so it’s more of a pain than anything.

Two reasons I can’t at this time:
Steam games I play with my son that will _not_ run in VM or Wine or etc
Capture One photo software

I keep a nice VM with FreeBSD handy and make as much use of the Linux Subsystem (especially now that there is a good X Windows Server for it) as possible but while those two things remain an issue, well, that’s how it is.

A seemingly endless procession of Job’s messengers…..

Fears are growing among European leaders that the EU’s industrial recovery from the pandemic is about to be undercut by yet another supply shock: a shortage of Chinese magnesium, which is vital to sectors such as cars, planes and electronics.

More than 95 percent of Europe’s magnesium comes from China but the country is slashing back output amid nationwide energy shortages. China is, by far, the world’s biggest producer, meaning it would be hard for smaller producers such as Russia and Israel to step in and fill huge shortfalls.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš — revealingly, leaders from top car-making countries — raised the issue on Thursday during an EU leaders’ summit, according to a diplomat familiar with the discussion.

“Merkel [said] it’s become too costly to produce it [in China] because of the high energy prices,” the diplomat said, adding that the outgoing chancellor also warned about the knock-on effect on car production in Europe.

Babiš was even more direct, saying the auto sector is facing a “disaster.”

Hallmark and Lifetime are both very, very white channels in regards to their movie choices. Both the ones they make and the ones they choose to run on their networks. Mostly I think because they really market towards white suburbia. I don’t watch either, never have. My husband has become hooked on Grey’s Anatomy, some of the early seasons play on Lifetime, but that’s seriously the first time the TVs in our house have been turned to that channel. But yeah, Hallmark channel is definitely market-oriented to white suburbia. I’m sure the corporation intends to get money from other markets too, but they know their prime customers.

Christmas movies are extremely generic. Other than the original Grinch adaptation, or the original Rudolph presentation, and a few other famous movies from the 50’s and 40’s which pioneered what Hallmark, Disney etc. duplicate over and over ad naseum.

Where’s the Winter Solstice movies with human sacrifices? Or Chinese New Years movies with Confucian metaphors for the rule from heaven? Yeah, give me those instead.

I missed this from the previous day, but looks like Texas really is going the full nullification route now and declaring itself supreme law of the land?

[Embedded content]

The scary thing is that they clearly have a Supreme Court that is sympathetic to all the bullshit it’s spouting. They’re really just aiming for just total judicial repeal of the Supremacy Clause and essentially the totally dissolution of all federal authority. Because if one state can do it…

The Texas legislature hasn’t passed a new law. Has Paxton agreed to pursue this issue? Otherwise, it’s just performance art.

My sister, my niece, and I all kept our last names when we married, though our policy was to marry men whose last name started with the same last initial as ours so that monograms would be unaffected. ////

When we were engaged, my fiance initially insisted that I take his name and I almost broke up with him — and then he finally confessed that he was fine with it — it was just his warped sense of humor.

I knew I was had when I found a workbook where Wife-to-Be had practiced writing her first name and my last. It was a different era.

I have fond memories of growing up on the edge of a ND city about a little over a block away from the local TV station tower. It was great fun as a child seeing the window rattle and things shake in the house whenever one of those big prairie thunder and lightning storms rolled through. Also would really light up the room sometimes when the tower was hit.

Unless the manufacturing is done under the oversight of the US pharmaceutical firm, I would be concerned that plants in third world or developing countries might not meet the strict processes required to guarantee that their version meets the safety and efficacy standards of the original version. Maybe greatly expanding the capabilities of US plants to make products available for a worldwide customer base would be a better solution for now.

Stuff like this in horror movies drives me nuts. I was watching one last night and the villain had one of the heroes at gunpoint. Also, the hero had his hands tied behind his back so he was completely prone. Instead of just shooting his target and being done with it, the bad guy hesitates and lets the hero ramble on and on and on.

Why? Well, the heros sister had just breached the building where the bad guy was and of course she had to show up to make the big save.

You can’t save a dead person so they make the villain look like an incompetent moron by not taking an easy, clean, wide open shot at someone the villain REALLY wants to kill and who cannot defend themselves.

And that just ruins the whole thing for me.

JFC. I remember getting several vaccines at my school when I was a kid (mid 80s). Other than a few kids who had exemptions, we all went to the gym and got our shots. There was no bitching and no complaining. It was just something we did because it’s the right thing to do.

I was also required to get a bunch of vaccines to immigrate to the U.S.

Want to travel to Africa? Good fucking luck doing that without getting a few shots.

Vax requirements are NOT a new invention.

I was thinking the other day it would be interesting to do a horror movie that unfolds in such a way as to make it LOOK like such tropes are being followed to the letter only for there to be a big subversion at the end that shows the villain IS actually competent and kills all the heroes quickly and effectively.

The Evil Overlord list has something to say about this sort of behaviour (points 6 and 7 among others).

I think it was Lois McMaster Bujold’s book, “Brothers in Arms” which had the situation where the Big Bad Guy is down and presumably dead. This SF world allowed for brain transplants though so the hero very carefully uses a needler pistol to punch twenty or thirty holes in the Big Bad Guy’s skull in two neat rows around the circumference. I recall being very surprised and pleased at the same time when I first read that part. Point 13 in the list, if you’re interested.

1. For “realistic” horror movies, you don’t verify the bad guy is dead because then how could you make a sequel? This doesn’t apply when the villain is supernatural (e.g. The Ring or Chucky)
2. An Austin Powers movie mocked the whole standard setup of excessive dialogue or complicated schemes that allowed the good guy to escape.

re: #186 The Pie Overlord!

I know that I keep harping on this guy, but Timothy Snyder is a very keen and knowledgeable observer. I do think that what he has to say is highly useful.

In this video, he makes the point that when the right wing paramilitaries start mixing with the police and armed forces, we as a democratic society, have lost control of the ability of the Republic to protect itself (and us). (In our case, right-wing paramilitaries include Proud Boys, Oath Keepers and Three-Percenters.)

To me this is why the Department of Defense and a number of major police organizations have been removing these folks. And why I view the vaccine mandates as a good thing.

When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching with torches and pictures of a leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.

LESSON 6: Be Wary of Paramilitaries
