Pretty good knives for the money. All the reviews put them atop the best value list. I was torn between these and some that went for two of three times that per each. I retired a set of Chicago knives that I’ve had for decades.

What a racist piece of trash she is. And that is what Trump supporters value: the color of your skin (the lighter the better) and your religion (some form of Christianity). Jewish Trump supporters do not seem to care about this racism. The Trump cult truly believes that human worth is tied to skin color and only whites need apply.

It seems so primitive. But it’s not ‘human nature’. It’s culture. People make decisions to become racist. Incorrect decisions. Mandatory, free education hasn’t smartened them up enough. I’m starting to think private schools should not be allowed to take the place of public schooling. They can have any school they want—after class time in well-run public schools.

I never got any static from my wife (may her memory be a blessing) over my model plane habit but my fundagelical preacher brother did become downright incensed over it. He thought it was a sinful waste of time and energy that could be better applied to Bible study, prayer, sharpening my shooting skills or whatever the hell it was that is so important to him. I told him it was none of his fucking business and he was nuts to make an issue of it. The oddest thing about this is that he was an enthusiastic modeler himself until just a couple of months before our falling out.

Unfortunately, in too many communities, public schools do an inadequate job of education. The private secular schools in Chicago are very pricey but provide top quality education. Most of the religious schools here also include sound programs in science, no creationism nonsense, history, and traditional subjects.

Is there a way to make public schools offer the quality education each American (and each human) deserves? If everybody put their resources in education for everybody, everybody benefits. It’s so hard to ask anyone to give up the best to increase the offerings for the rest. Public schools can be hell (ask Mr. Bacon) but they don’t have to be.

It shouldn’t be surprising that people who get worked up over what people different than them do in the privacy of their own homes or to be able to live with themselves without being miserable their whole lives, would also be extraordinarily upset with what people not so different from them do in their spare time if it’s not what they think you should do. (I’m sorry if that borderline word salad didn’t exactly make sense)

My answer to people is this:

1. I’m an adult.
2. I have an education, and it’s been paid for.
3. I pay all my bills.
4. Nothing I do harms anyone else or forces my will upon others.

So STFU about me playing video games and building model spaceships or whatever and mind your own goddamned business.

SRSLY, chess??

What ticks them off? That it’s a game with no incidents of physical violence inherent (and thus vaguely un-American)?

You’d think a game that is literally a black-and-white conflict, and has bishops and little crosses on the main pieces would be one they’d like….

Old School Thought.

Russians play chess well => Communists => Homosexuals (and all other bad things)

And you can sub in whatever other “bad” labels you want to.

Secondarily, chess is obviously an intellectual exercise. And thinking is a threat to the pulpit pimps since forethought and logic are their kryptonite.

GOP politician in Oklahoma David Rader refers to Asian-Americans using a racist slur right after a presentation about racism

I suspect that it was totally unintentional. He is probably someone who uses white, black, and brown to refer to people of various races and that may have been the first word that came to his mind when referring to those of Asian ancestry. He was speaking extemporaneously and people make all types of verbal errors there.

The right course of action is to speak up (as diplomatically as possible). You may lose a friend, but silence is wrong. There may be a way to tell them without telling them (books/articles, etc). It might also be helpful to see if any of the orgs that treat/advocate for people with autism might have tools/or the right words to say.
Good luck.

Sadly, I think that your wife is correct.

Trying to intervene, over-ride, or correct your friends is not going to help the relationship. Offering support, as you can, to the parents once they indicate the need for it, is likely to be a more successful approach.

Gah…as many of you know I’ve been obsessed with my solar system since I got it installed. I monitor my usage, how much energy gets generated, what I take from the grid. I’ve been on self-supply for a few weeks, using the battery backup at night to power the house then letting the sun recharge it during the day.

Well, with the storm coming (it’s here now) I wanted to have a full charge, so I switched back to ‘Battery backup’ which should fill the battery from the sun and/or grid to 100%…except I’ve been sitting at 40% for two days. Tried switching it back and forth, changing the reserve minimum to a higher number…nothing. So far we haven’t lost power, and if we do, I’ll have about 40% to work with which is a little less than I use in a given night.

So…do I try turning the system off and on? There’s a big red switch for that. Or just keep my fingers crossed until morning and call the solar people and ask them? I wonder if a breaker connected to the system might have gotten flipped but I have no interest in going out in the wind and rain and looking at the breaker box (though it’s on the leeward corner of the house).

I would say no but that you need instead to be gentle but persistent. The sooner the child gets the assistance he needs, the better it will be for everyone. My son’s needs were very different but the proverb about needing a village is even more true with a special needs child.

Am I the only one who saw that phraseology and wondered if it’s the same solar system the rest of us live in? Or if he’s the God of our shared solar system?

And I still consider Pluto a planet.

re: #155 Jack Burton in Mactified Forshion

From what I heard, but I don’t know if it’s factual or not: As soon as big investors into the SPAC learned it was involved with this Trump scam, they sold off fast and ran for the hills.

*If* that’s true, this isn’t going anywhere but the toilet. Individual whackjob Clownstick cultists only have so much money to grift, and I think that cash cow is very near drained.

Selling off isn’t the same thing as pulling your money out. If the money was promised but not yet delivered, they could do some good by withholding it. If the money was already banked, then passing off their shares to some unsuspecting rube isn’t exactly noteworthy.

It’s almost like the entire thing was designed to be a grift, not a competitive system.

“Almost”??

Who do they consider an authority figure? That’s who they will listen to.

re: #139 Eclectic Cyborg

My wife says it’s not our place to tell the kids parents (our close friends) about this so I haven’t said anything.

Is this the right course of action?

Hypothetically the most moral course of action would be to make up a story about how:

* a kid similar to that kid, was showing signs of being autistic.
* that kid’s parents failed to see that he was showing signs of being autistic.
* despite not thinking it was needed, those parents decided to get the kid checked out anyway, and the doctor recommended the kid have behavioural treatment.
* those parents were glad they got the kid checked out, because it made the kid happier.

People hate being told what to do, but can be persuaded by stories…
