I chainsawed up a pile of old rotting fence rails. Then got out the 40 year old manual hedge clippers and started on some overgrown ornamental yew bushes. And finally got everything ready for yardwaste pickup Tuesday.

Next is to pay a bunch of end of the month bills. But, as one wag noted, paying bills just encourages them to send more.

The entire right and the usual suspects on the “left” are too. I’ve yet to hear from an actual reliable source and not 3rd hand someone who heard from some guy who saw Ferris Bueller pass out at 31 flavors, any thing about a walkout over safety concerns, a strike, or scab workers.

I’m not passing any sort of judgement of any kind until at least that info gets verified. Even if all that is correct, Alec Baldwin still doesn’t deserve the shit he’s getting from them about this.

I love that graphic because when I was a kid I used to love dot-to-dot puzzles and made hundreds of my own (on bookcovers, in margins, etc…) I’d tap out 50-100 dots then just connect them - made a really cool dragon on a Pee-chee folder once.

I’ve actually met Alec Baldwin (opinion spoiler: not overly impressed), but while I don’t think he’s quite as much the *victim* as the dead/wounded, he WAS also the producer of the film: I think some level of “institutional” responsibility for what goes on on set should apply. Kind of like how the captain of a ship has to bear the responsibility when it runs on the rocks - even if the drunken mate left the narcoleptic helmsman in charge with the nav chart turned upside down….
That said though, I agree that some (most, really) of the dumping on Baldwin over the “Rust” tragedy is - to say the least - misguided and inappropriate: where it isn’t (like Trump Jr’s in comment #3) just utterly disgusting.

Yes. As producer, he has some responsibility in that he ostensibly had some say in hiring the (possibly non-union) handlers that ended up causing the tragic incident, and I agree he should be held to account for that. However, as the actor with the gun pulling the trigger, he was as much an innocent bystander as anybody. The industry has established procedures to ensure that actors who are untrained in the ways of firearms are able to safely handle them on the set, those procedures were violated in some way that has yet to be revealed, and someone died as a result.

However, as producer he has a responsibility to ensure a safe working environment. As I understand it, the preceeding staff walkout was in response to unsafe conditions. Their complaints weren’t addressed.

From that perspective he may be responsible.

He wasn’t THE producer, he was one of twelve, per IMDB. Two of them (not he) are executive producers. I don’t know how these things are done in the movie business, in theatre being a producer means you put up some of the money to get it done. Not ranting at Dopamine Fish here. (Who, I suspect, already knows all of this.) Just using his very good post as a starting point and soapbox.

Obviously, I am not an actor. Nor am I familiar with the rules of firearms handling in that environment.

But the whole idea that the shooter was not responsible frosts my pumpkin.

Every bit of my firearms training states explicitly that I am fully responsible for knowing the state of and for the proper use of any firearm that I am handling. The “I did not know it was loaded” just does not cut it.

In my experience, you do not load a firearm until you are ready to use it. You do not chamber a round until you are ready to shoot. You only disengage the safety as the final step to shooting. You do not point the weapon at anything or anybody that you are not intending to put a hole into. And your finger does not go onto the trigger until you are fully intending to shoot.

As Stonekettle has said and I agree with “There are no accidental discharges, only negligent discharges”.

And that includes where the firearm has a mechanical misfunction that causes a discharge. (Worn sear or trigger, frozen firing pin, broken safety, etc)

In the civilian world, I have seen incidents of unsafe handling on shooting ranges by several friends. And I never went shooting with any of them again.

How much does Baldwin actually know about guns? If he’s not a gun owner and never been trained in the use of real guns, there’s no reason to expect that he would have any particular familiarity with the procedures of handling weapons. All he might know is the few steps needed for his scenes. These aren’t supposed to be live guns.

I’ve watched enough West Wing, and heard Pence’s description of his movements on 1/6, to understand that “the Secret Service would have vehemently recommended, the Secret Service would have tried very hard to be persuasive, the Secret Service would have been very unhappy” doesn’t actually in real life mean “the Secret Service would never have allowed it.”

If a protectee is really truly determined to defy the Secret Service’s wishes… well, they’re prepared to be the physical wall that takes bullets first, and y’know there’s a whole line of succession if it comes to it.

Obviously, I am not an actor. Nor am I familiar with the rules of firearms handling in that environment.

But the whole idea that the shooter was not responsible frosts my pumpkin.

Every bit of my firearms training states explicitly that I am fully responsible for knowing the state of and for the proper use of any firearm that I am handling. The “I did not know it was loaded” just does not cut it.

In my experience, you do not load a firearm until you are ready to use it. You do not chamber a round until you are ready to shoot. You only disengage the safety as the final step to shooting. You do not point the weapon at anything or anybody that you are not intending to put a hole into. And your finger does not go onto the trigger until you are fully intending to shoot.

As Stonekettle has said and I agree with “There are no accidental discharges, only negligent discharges”.

And that includes where the firearm has a mechanical misfunction that causes a discharge. (Worn sear or trigger, frozen firing pin, broken safety, etc)

In the civilian world, I have seen incidents of unsafe handling on shooting ranges by several friends. And I never went shooting with any of them again.

The actor is not the shooter. They are just the surrogate. The shooter is the person who is being paid to create the shot, safely.

Dems here are also proposing a new district map which would even out the number of districts so the Dems and gop have the same number of majority districts. The Facebook Papers, a series of articles published by a consortium of 17 U.S. news outlets beginning Friday, shed new light on the company’s thinking behind its actions leading up to the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6 and its ability to fend off hate speech in languages outside of English.

Facebook shares were slightly negative in early trading Monday after the news outlets published their stories based on the leaked documents. The company is also scheduled to report quarterly earnings after markets close Monday.

The documents were provided to the news outlets by Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee who took tens of thousands of pages of internal research with her before she left. She’s since provided those documents to Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking whistleblower status.

“At the heart of these stories is a premise which is false,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement in response to the flood of reporting. “Yes, we’re a business and we make profit, but the idea that we do so at the expense of people’s safety or wellbeing misunderstands where our own commercial interests lie. The truth is we’ve invested $13 billion and have over 40,000 people to do one job: keep people safe on Facebook.”

More Covid loan shenanigans:

Vinath Oudomsine, from Dublin, Georgia, has been accused by federal prosecutors of fraudulently applying for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). The man claimed to be running a business, but reportedly spent most of the money on a rare Pokémon card instead.

As The Telegraph reports, Oudomsine is accused by authorities of applying for the loan last year, claiming he was running a small business that employed ten other people. The loans, which were available nationally and resulted in the government lending over $200 billion to American businesses, were designed to help cover the costs of “payroll, rent/mortgage, utilities, and other ordinary business expenses,” during the worst months of the pandemic.

He was successful and was given $85,000. The only problem was that prosecutors allege he had no such business, and instead spent the bulk of the loan amount—$57,789—on a single Pokémon card.

At least in this case, the dude has been charged with wire fraud and is facing 20 years in prison, so there MIGHT be some justice.

I mentioned earlier that a lot of Latino voters are churchgoing, family-oriented people, which would seem to make them receptive to Conservative politics, but there are some, er, “problems” there…

I finished the cooler for my cat food dispensers.

The containers contain cat-proofed gel pack goo in ziplock bags, and slot into retainers that are attached to the top of the feeder. I’m just using it for breakfast at 5am so they don’t try so hard to wake me up, so I only need to cool one section. That’s frost on the top of the one on the right.

The design was done in TinkerCAD, and it’s printed in PLA using a QIDI Plus printer.

What, pray tell, did any of their measures do to spur FB growth among the young? I cannot think that promotion of conservative anti-democratic values would be of any interest to teens or those in their early 20’s. Or is the FB focus solely on Instagram for that age group? Certainly it isn’t the FB product.

Based on my kids’ behaviors, Facebook’s format doesn’t work well with smartphones. That’s what Instagram and Tiktok do better.

Except that we don’t know who does the hiring, thus we don’t know where any responsibilities might lie. You seem to want to find something to blame Baldwin for, no matter what.

ETA and for that matter, we don’t even really know what happened with the gun, what it was loaded with and what the flaw was.

Not only was Caviezel the lead in “The Last Temptation of Christ”, he also played the mass murderer in “Deja Vu”, a far less violent and much better film (and no, I never saw Last Temptation).

They had to put a lot of effort into preventing that moron from hurting anyone on the set of Person of Interest, which I’ll never be able to watch again. They couldn’t even let him drive, because he’s too crazy.

There needs to be greater attention paid when firearms are involved in a scene. The legendary shootout scene in Heat (one of the greatest ever put to film, IMHO) is an example of it done right. No one was killed or injured.

We need to thoroughly reform our electoral system. It was always based on good faith and mutual trust with a minimum of oversight.

That atmosphere is now completely gone: the GOP message is one of massive systemic fraud on the part of the Democrats (“It was a coup!”) while they set about to disenfranchise as many voters as they can and overturn or refuse to certify the outcome of any elections they disagree with.

The 1876 election was totally corrupt. But when the 2000 election was stolen by SCOTUS with no consequences, that gave the GQP advance notice that they had free rein to inflict whatever damage they desired on our systems as long as the Court remained in Republican hands.

He’d also judge stranger’s ethnicity, and then talk to them in gibberish trying to sound like the language their grandparents spoke back home. If some of the crew were out using the guns for target practice, it becomes an entirely different matter, and the first question is now whether they were “allowed” to do it or snuck it in after hours. Were there witnesses or not?
