Well, I’m feeling mildly virtuous.

I chainsawed up a pile of old rotting fence rails. Then got out the 40 year old manual hedge clippers and started on some overgrown ornamental yew bushes. And finally got everything ready for yardwaste pickup Tuesday.

Next is to pay a bunch of end of the month bills. But, as one wag noted, paying bills just encourages them to send more.

The entire right and the usual suspects on the “left” are too. I’ve yet to hear from an actual reliable source and not 3rd hand someone who heard from some guy who saw Ferris Bueller pass out at 31 flavors, any thing about a walkout over safety concerns, a strike, or scab workers.

I’m not passing any sort of judgement of any kind until at least that info gets verified. Even if all that is correct, Alec Baldwin still doesn’t deserve the shit he’s getting from them about this.

As near as I can tell, from all available objective sources, Alec Baldwin is essentially another victim in the whole process. He was just doing his job; he was handed a gun he was assured by multiple crew members and by the overall gun handling process was safe, he pulled the trigger, a woman died. I’m not his biggest fan, but everyone targeting him over this is just wrong. Period.

Agreed.
I’ve actually met Alec Baldwin (opinion spoiler: not overly impressed), but while I don’t think he’s quite as much the *victim* as the dead/wounded, he WAS also the producer of the film: I think some level of “institutional” responsibility for what goes on on set should apply. Kind of like how the captain of a ship has to bear the responsibility when it runs on the rocks - even if the drunken mate left the narcoleptic helmsman in charge with the nav chart turned upside down….
That said though, I agree that some (most, really) of the dumping on Baldwin over the “Rust” tragedy is - to say the least - misguided and inappropriate: where it isn’t (like Trump Jr’s in comment #3) just utterly disgusting.

27
Dopamine Fish  Oct 24, 2021 • 6:15:11pm

re: #26 Jay C

Yes. As producer, he has some responsibility in that he ostensibly had some say in hiring the (possibly non-union) handlers that ended up causing the tragic incident, and I agree he should be held to account for that. However, as the actor with the gun pulling the trigger, he was as much an innocent bystander as anybody. The industry has established procedures to ensure that actors who are untrained in the ways of firearms are able to safely handle them on the set, those procedures were violated in some way that has yet to be revealed, and someone died as a result.

I don’t think Alec Baldwin is at fault in his role as actor.

However, as producer he has a responsibility to ensure a safe working environment. As I understand it, the preceeding staff walkout was in response to unsafe conditions. Their complaints weren’t addressed.

From that perspective he may be responsible.

Rolling Stone:

“…The two sources, both of whom have been granted anonymity due to the ongoing investigation, describe participating in “dozens” of planning briefings ahead of that day when Trump supporters broke into the Capitol as his election loss to President Joe Biden was being certified.

“I remember Marjorie Taylor Greene specifically,” the organizer says. “I remember talking to probably close to a dozen other members at one point or another or their staffs.”
For the sake of clarity, we will refer to one of the sources as a rally organizer and the other as a planner. Rolling Stone has confirmed that both sources were involved in organizing the main event aimed at objecting to the electoral certification, which took place at the White House Ellipse on Jan. 6. Trump spoke at that rally and encouraged his supporters to march to the Capitol. Some members of the audience at the Ellipse began walking the mile and a half to the Capitol as Trump gave his speech. The barricades were stormed minutes before the former president concluded his remarks.

These two sources also helped plan a series of demonstrations that took place in multiple states around the country in the weeks between the election and the storming of the Capitol. According to these sources, multiple people associated with the March for Trump and Stop the Steal events that took place during this period communicated with members of Congress throughout this process.

Along with Greene, the conspiratorial pro-Trump Republican from Georgia who took office earlier this year, the pair both say the members who participated in these conversations or had top staffers join in included Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.), Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), and Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas).

“We would talk to Boebert’s team, Cawthorn’s team, Gosar’s team like back to back to back to back,” says the organizer. “

AFAICT, on set, protocol told him that the gun was safe and that he was supposed to just pick it up and use it. Actors are insulated from the mechanics of how guns work so that actors who don’t regularly use or own guns can still be assured that they’re safe.

Was that a live intact round fired on set? If so holy shit. Armorer fail. If not a regular live round, probable armorer fail. Was it a paper wad etc.? (Those get aimed and fired in safe ways NOT at people.)

Was the person that grabbed the gun and gave it to him even supposed to do that?

He wasn’t THE producer, he was one of twelve, per IMDB. Two of them (not he) are executive producers. I don’t know how these things are done in the movie business, in theatre being a producer means you put up some of the money to get it done. So did he actually have any authority over how things were run? Even as one of the twelve? Dunno.

Some just never have any chance in life:

3 Children Found Abandoned, Skeletal Remains of 4th in Houston House of Horrors

Houston cops carrying out a welfare check on an apartment found a nightmare: three siblings abandoned and living with the skeletal remains of a fourth.

“A very horrific situation out here, very tragic,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said at a Sunday press conference. “I’ve been in this business a long time and I had never heard of a scenario like this. It really caught me by surprise.”

The surviving children were ages 15, 10, and 7, and they had been living in “deplorable conditions” for “quite a long time,” Gonzalez said. Asked whether he meant weeks, the sheriff said the kids were on their own for a much longer period of time.

Shocking clip shows worrying spiking injection ‘epidemic’ sweeping UK

An alarming number of women are reporting being “spiked by a needle” in a worrying epidemic sweeping the UK.

British police have received hundreds of reports of drink-spiking in the past two months with many more appearing on social media as women bravely share their stories to warn others.

Many of the alleged attacks involve terrifying accounts of women being pricked by a needle while at a bar or nightclub and quickly being left in “paralysed” states.

Not ranting at Dopamine Fish here. (Who, I suspect, already knows all of this.) Just using his very good post as a starting point and soapbox.

Obviously, I am not an actor. Nor am I familiar with the rules of firearms handling in that environment.

But the whole idea that the shooter was not responsible frosts my pumpkin.

Every bit of my firearms training states explicitly that I am fully responsible for knowing the state of and for the proper use of any firearm that I am handling. The “I did not know it was loaded” just does not cut it.

In my experience, you do not load a firearm until you are ready to use it. You do not chamber a round until you are ready to shoot. You only disengage the safety as the final step to shooting. You do not point the weapon at anything or anybody that you are not intending to put a hole into. And your finger does not go onto the trigger until you are fully intending to shoot.

As Stonekettle has said and I agree with “There are no accidental discharges, only negligent discharges”.

And that includes where the firearm has a mechanical misfunction that causes a discharge. (Worn sear or trigger, frozen firing pin, broken safety, etc)

In the civilian world, I have seen incidents of unsafe handling on shooting ranges by several friends. And I never went shooting with any of them again.

In light of the findings, Erik Wemple of The Washington Post pronounced the story “a complete crock”. In the Columbia Journalism Review, Bill Grueskin called the story “a mess—thinly sourced, full of erroneous assumptions, and plagued by gaping holes in the reporting”. But it looks like the winds have mostly died down. I have a couple of spots that leak when the wind blows the rain at them (and I can’t figure out where exactly the leak is), so I worry about wind, not rain.

Yes, but if handed something and told “cold” and then expected to do a scene? Don’t much care for him but this is not his error.

I had an LT come down to my arms room in 1984 in Germany. It was payday (cash payroll was still done then) and so he had to have a pistol with a full mag but not a chambered round. I put the mag in, put the pistol in front of him and said “Here is your loaded pistol”. He racked the pistol and pulled the trigger sending a .45 bullet bouncing around the room. I was unamused but no one was injured. Eventually he was unable to be promoted.

How much does Baldwin actually know about guns? If he’s not a gun owner and never been trained in the use of real guns, there’s no reason to expect that he would have any particular familiarity with the procedures of handling weapons. All he might know is the few steps needed for his scenes. These aren’t supposed to be live guns.

Speaking of other Republican genocidaires:

A Democratic state senator suffering from cancer ordered Florida’s controversial Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo out of her office earlier this week when he and his aides refused to wear face masks to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Ladapo was making the rounds of senators’ offices in Tallahassee to court their votes for confirmation as the state’s top public health official.

“I told him I had a serious medical condition,” state Sen. Tina Polsky, who will begin radiation therapy for breast cancer next week, told Florida Politics.

When she asked him why he refused to take precautions against spreading COVID recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ladapo “just smiles and doesn’t answer. He’s very smug,” recounted Polsky, who represents sections of Palm Beach and Broward counties.

As he finally agreed to exit her office, Polsky said Ladapo turned to her and said: “Sometimes I try to reason with unreasonable people for fun.”

Period.

I’ve watched enough West Wing, and heard Pence’s description of his movements on 1/6, to understand that “the Secret Service would have vehemently recommended, the Secret Service would have tried very hard to be persuasive, the Secret Service would have been very unhappy” doesn’t actually in real life mean “the Secret Service would never have allowed it.”

The actor is not the shooter. They are just the surrogate. The shooter is the person who is being paid to create the shot, safely.

This ain’t exactly gonna be a slow news Monday…

The organizer claims the pair received “several assurances” about the “blanket pardon” from Gosar.

“I was just going over the list of pardons and we just wanted to tell you guys how much we appreciate all the hard work you’ve been doing,” Gosar said, according to the organizer.

The rally planner describes the pardon as being offered while “encouraging” the staging of protests against the election. While the organizer says they did not get involved in planning the rallies solely due to the pardon, they were upset that it ultimately did not materialize.

“I would have done it either way with or without the pardon,” the organizer says. “I do truly believe in this country, but to use something like that and put that out on the table when someone is so desperate, it’s really not good business.”

I’m sure they will pick someone as awful as possible. We have got to get GA voters out there to vote in 2022 or we will end up losing that seat.

Dems here are also proposing a new district map which would even out the number of districts so the Dems and gop have the same number of majority districts. It’s a good idea and beyond past time to get done, but the GOP is going to fight it and publicly lie about and trash it. The GA GOP is just awful, they really do not care who gets hurt as long as they keep power here.

Sometimes a producer might not even be on set very much if it all. Think of a company owner with multiple stores in an area who might only spend one day a week in any specific store. He has managers and assistant managers and team leads to handle the meat and potatoes of the day-to-day for each store.

Looks like Marky Mark might be in for a rough week…

Via NBC:

The Facebook Papers, a series of articles published by a consortium of 17 U.S. news outlets beginning Friday, shed new light on the company’s thinking behind its actions leading up to the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6 and its ability to fend off hate speech in languages outside of English.

Facebook shares were slightly negative in early trading Monday after the news outlets published their stories based on the leaked documents. The company is also scheduled to report quarterly earnings after markets close Monday.

The documents were provided to the news outlets by Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee who took tens of thousands of pages of internal research with her before she left. She’s since provided those documents to Congress and the Securities and Exchange Commission, seeking whistleblower status.

“At the heart of these stories is a premise which is false,” a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement in response to the flood of reporting. “Yes, we’re a business and we make profit, but the idea that we do so at the expense of people’s safety or wellbeing misunderstands where our own commercial interests lie. The truth is we’ve invested $13 billion and have over 40,000 people to do one job: keep people safe on Facebook.”

Hahahahahahahahahahaha *gasp*…hahahahahahahaha!

I swear FB has some of the most tone deaf spokespeople of any major company.

Full story here.

Sometimes a producer might not even be on set very much if it all. Think of a company owner with multiple stores in an area who might only spend one day a week in any specific store. He has managers and assistant managers and team leads to handle the meat and potatoes of the day-to-day for each store.

Certainly the other eleven don’t seem to have been there the day the shot was fired.

Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 25, 2021 • 7:54:04am

More Covid loan shenanigans:

Vinath Oudomsine, from Dublin, Georgia, has been accused by federal prosecutors of fraudulently applying for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). The man claimed to be running a business, but reportedly spent most of the money on a rare Pokémon card instead.

As The Telegraph reports, Oudomsine is accused by authorities of applying for the loan last year, claiming he was running a small business that employed ten other people. The loans, which were available nationally and resulted in the government lending over $200 billion to American businesses, were designed to help cover the costs of “payroll, rent/mortgage, utilities, and other ordinary business expenses,” during the worst months of the pandemic.

He was successful and was given $85,000. The only problem was that prosecutors allege he had no such business, and instead spent the bulk of the loan amount—$57,789—on a single Pokémon card.

At least in this case, the dude has been charged with wire fraud and is facing 20 years in prison, so there MIGHT be some justice.

For starters, they are Catholic, which makes them acceptable but still not “correct”.

And their idea of “family values” involves strong communities: that means strong public institutions, services and schools to help families make a better life for their children.

GOP Family Values are all about banning gay marriage and abortion and sex education while privatizing everything in sight, including schools and other community services…

Its time to ban the use of guns that can fire in movies. You can create gunfire through special effects.

There needs to be greater attention paid when firearms are involved in a scene. The legendary shootout scene in Heat (one of the greatest ever put to film, IMHO) is an example of it done right. No one was killed or injured.

Young adults between the ages of 20 and 30 were expected to decline by 4 percent during the same timeframe. Making matters worse, the younger a user was, the less on average they regularly engaged with the app. The message was clear: Facebook was losing traction with younger generations fast.”

We know that the existing prop gun protocols/rules were broken. Obey those rules and we can have gunfire, heist films, done on film, with practical effects, safely. Adding more rules won’t help those that break them. The answer here is strict enforcement of the rules. A set can be a very hazardous place. Even if they ban real guns, we will still have all the stunts. Fights. Car chases. Lots of electricity and a rainy scene.

A new bombshell report published by RollingStone is naming several congressional Republicans as”co-conspirators” in Donald Trump’s attempt to usurp the presidency by unleashing a mob of supporters into the capitol to force then-Vice President Mike Pence to annul the 2020 election which was won by Democrat Joe Biden.

Citing three sources with knowledge of the planning, the news outlet detailed “explosive allegations that multiple members of Congress were intimately involved in planning both Trump’s efforts to overturn his election loss and the Jan. 6 events that turned violent.”

The lawmakers named by the sources include Reps Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) Paul Gosar (R-AZ) Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Louie Gohmert (R-TX).

The sources told RollingStone that the MAGA lawmakers participated in “dozens of planning briefings ahead of that day when Trump supporters broke into the Capitol as his election loss to President Joe Biden was being certified.”

Substituting “Facebook” for “religious institutions” might give Mr.Zuckerberg some insight that he opted for neither growth nor safety:

A new survey found that half of people ages 13 to 25 think that religious institutions care little for the issues that matter deeply to them, such as racial justice, gender equity, immigration rights, income inequality and gun control, and that may be driving a decline in membership for several denominations, reported the Wall Street Journal.

Catering to Q, racists, misogynists, reactionaries, anti-LGBQ, …, seems like the wrong strategy if truly believe an aging user base is an existential threat to the company.

re: #213 Hecuba’s daughter

Not only was Caviezel the lead in “The Last Temptation of Christ”, he also played the mass murderer in “Deja Vu”, a far less violent and much better film (and no, I never saw Last Temptation).

They had to put a lot of effort into preventing that moron from hurting anyone on the set of Person of Interest, which I’ll never be able to watch again. They couldn’t even let him drive, because he’s too crazy.

There needs to be greater attention paid when firearms are involved in a scene. The legendary shootout scene in Heat (one of the greatest ever put to film, IMHO) is an example of it done right. No one was killed or injured.

Greater than what? Do we know what attention was paid?

(It looks like Hollywood is removing real guns from their productions en masse as a result of this incident. Works for me.)

re: #204 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

We need to thoroughly reform our electoral system. It was always based on good faith and mutual trust with a minimum of oversight.

That atmosphere is now completely gone: the GOP message is one of massive systemic fraud on the part of the Democrats (“It was a coup!”) while they set about to disenfranchise as many voters as they can and overturn or refuse to certify the outcome of any elections they disagree with.

The 1876 election was totally corrupt. But when the 2000 election was stolen by SCOTUS with no consequences, that gave the GQP advance notice that they had free rein to inflict whatever damage they desired on our systems as long as the Court remained in Republican hands.

Clearly, greater attention than in this particular case. Or, for that matter, then the attention paid to firearms safety on the set of The Crow.

It’s being reported that the gun Alec used was used the previous day by crew members doing target practice with live ammo. Also that live ammo was stored in close proximity to the blank ammo.

This is a complete breakdown of the normal on set safety protocols.

How stupid do you have to be allowing live ammo on the set and used in the prop weapons?

Huh? WTF, was he walking up to people on set and saying, “Have you heard about our Lord and Savior Adolf Hitler” or something?

More “Have you heard how organized and efficient Hitler was?” He’d also comment on who’s Jewish.

He also refused to film a scene where his character rescued a gay couple from trouble, because he thought these characters deserved to be comdemned rather than rescued. He’s a REALLY sick guy, like the rest of his subculture.

I’m asking that a lot while listening to this podcast.

He’d also judge stranger’s ethnicity, and then talk to them in gibberish trying to sound like the language their grandparents spoke back home. He’d see a black person, and immediately put on a racist accent, and pushed back against an interracial relationship in the show, ruining another actor’s character.

This guy has gone full Gibson.

If some of the crew were out using the guns for target practice, it becomes an entirely different matter, and the first question is now whether they were “allowed” to do it or snuck it in after hours. Were there witnesses or not?

One of the hardest things about running a business of any kind is policing your employees.
