A friend who just lost his job because he refused to get vaccinated sent me a few messages earlier looking for sympathy, complaining about how hard his job hunt has been and asking me if I have any leads that might be useful.

I don’t want to come off like a jerk but I mean, he pretty much made his bed and laid in it here so I’m finding it very hard to not be terse in my response.

How would you folks handle this?

BG: Guy and I have been friends for about 8 years now. My wife and his wife and kids all get along pretty good.

Since we got CL’d in that discussion:

They were never allowed to have fun when they were teenagers and tweenagers, so they’re not about to let anybody else have any, either.

I’d want to call them ‘useless’, but that sells it short. They are absolutely not useless, because they’re all happy being useful idiots for the GOP. Everything they say seems almost expertly crafted to perpetuate GOP frames ad infinitum.

re: #4 Eclectic Cyborg

I don’t think that for a moment, I think that they are simply selfish reprehensible people that don’t want ANYONE ELSE to have fun. What I can’t condone is the hypocrisy…. people can be weak, flawed, whatever, consensual adults are gonna do consensual things, I’ve come to accept that. What I am not gonna do is watch one group condemn a bunch of behavior that they are busy engaging in at this very moment (see Gingrinch, et al) and play themselves off as some kind of moral beacon of behavior.

the GOP does this shit all the time, you try and combat racism, they claim that you’re the REAL racists, (see Freedom, Patriots, Liberals) for abuse of language and co-opting the meaning of words.

Its the same old shitburger and as we have discussed, the media looks at them dewy eyed and reports everything as if that shine-box that they’re using has magical properties.

Amazon delivery woes:

I had a package out for delivery this morning by an Amazon Delivery driver - not USPS, not FedEx, not UPS, not DHL, etc. I get a notification about an hour and a half back that he’s ten stops away. I pull up the tracker and watch his progression on the map. 2 stops away, he’s at the Post Office half a block from my house. He spends between 10-15 minutes behind the Post Office. Then he pulls out of the Post Office into Main Street, takes Los Lentes north up to Route 314 and I watch his northward progress North up 314 all the way up to Albuquerque, my package undelivered.

Although it’s supposed to be delivered today by 10 PM, I just know that they’re not going to send the truck back down today to deliver my package.

Part of me says to hell with helping him, but your families care for each other and that’s more than a little important. Especially in today’s world. As more time passes more employers are going to require vaccines and he is not going to be able to support his family without a decent paying job and decide it’s in his best interest. Hopefully he and his family will stay healthy in the meantime, but god, by this time how could anyone still be thinking this is ok? We’ve lost more than a quarter million lives in this country and the count is still rising. I can’t figure out how to relate to people who won’t do this simple thing. Especially since it’s actually a patriotic thing. Sigh, I don’t envy you on this one.

It’s easy for me to say this, as this person is not my friend and the vast majority of my social circle are not anti-vax, but utterly ignoring this dude put his family’s financial well-being in jeopardy because he won’t get vaccinated is fucking bullshit.

re: #6 Belafon

Tell him you don’t know of anything that doesn’t involve getting the vaccine.

This needs to be put in the conversation. It’s not accusatory or hostile, so it keeps the conservative fee-fees from getting hurt (which as we all know is what really matters), but it gets the message across.

Quite frankly, not even mentioning why he got fired, even with the gentlest of kid gloves, is what these damn people want.

Also apologies to Electric Cyborg. It sounds like this guy is your friend and your families mean a lot to each other, so this can’t be easy and I hope I’m not making it worse.

These presentations had the familiar vibe of an overly-ambitious video game reveal. In the concert example, one friend is present in reality while the other is not; the friend joins the concert inexplicably as a blue Force ghost and the pair grab “tickets” to a “metaverse afterparty” in which NFTs are for sale. This theme continued throughout as people wandered seamlessly into virtual fantasy worlds over and over, and the presentation lacked any sense of what this so-called metaverse would look like in practice. It was flagrantly abstract, even metaphorical, showing more the dream of the metaverse than anything resembling reality.

Well, the vehicle has been in front of house in a residential neighborhood on on Sancho Plaza Way, SW, in Albuquerque for the entire time since I posted that update.

It’s possible the GPS tracking has stopped updating in the interim. If I open a new window and try to track my package, the new window doesn’t take me to the GPS tracking map anymore.

I’m wondering if that means that the system has determined that the truck has moved on past your stop - i.e. your package was missed. I’m kinda surprised that packages can get missed these days; I figured truck drivers had the route put on their device from the loading scan.

I hadn’t seen this. What a dope.

Comedian Jim Breuer announced last week he was cancelling a gig in Montclair and other venues that require proof of vaccination for audience members, and for this we should be thankful, because this is not someone you’d choose to have within particle range when he’s dropping his viral load.

The popular standup comic, looking as though he had just escaped from a week of electrical torture, used Facebook to make his announcement, and his 18-minute post was a breathtaking display of someone trying to disguise ignorance and paranoia as intellectual heft.

Among many other things, Breuer declared that “doctors are out of their minds,” that we are all being led by unspecified “tyrants, these soulless evil, fear-driven animals,” and much of his stuporous soliloquy sounded like it was the preamble to a warning about satanic pedophilic pizza parlors.

“Wake up. Wake up,” he sneered. “This has nothing to do with safety. Zero.”

This wasn’t a bit, and it wasn’t funny. Unencumbered by clue, the Saturday Night Live alum is the latest big-time celeb incapable of accepting science or math, and that should scare anybody who knows the reach he has on social media and on various podcasts.

So: inspired by my fellow Lizards’ scintillating threads on the subject, I scheduled myself for a long-procrastinated (19 years) follow-up colonoscopy: last night, I drank the usual disgusting chemicals, had the usual disgusting reaction, and trundled off for the procedure early this morning with my vaccine card and my cellphone (since LGF, for whatever reason, is one of the few sites I can access and follow without a network: even in the subway).
Good news: absolutely NOTHING untoward was discovered. Less-good news: the excess air in my lower GI tract, which was supposed to just flatulate away, didn’t: not very comfortable. And it’s taken most of the
afternoon to subside.

Yeah, I ordered an expensive headset yesterday, it was supposed to be delivered last night but it says “package delayed in transit.” I’m tempted to cancel the order and try again. Maybe I’ll wait until Saturday. I’d really like this headset before we move over to our new piece of junk phone system hanging off of Microsoft Teams.

Sometimes those show up. There was one order that was delayed in transit, then after 2 to 3 more days, it was changed to Undeliverable. When I re-ordered the item, the Amazon delivery driver showed up in a rental van. I wondered if maybe somebody had crashed the Amazon van and that’s where my package was.

depending on how badly you want something, this can work to one’s advantage. I’ve waited out a “lost” delivery, gotten the refund, and then had the thing show up once. Hell, I’m not sending it back. They’ve already taken the loss. they probably wouldn’t even know what to do if I tried.

They specifically say now that if you request a refund, and the item shows up, you can keep the item and they don’t expect you to return it.

Interesting experience in the master luthier’s shop yesterday. made the mistake of asking if he could set up an epiphone les paul for me. A long moment of silence, followed by a gentle version of “I believe the gentleman has accidentally wandered into a shop believing it to be of a different sort from what it is.” If you’ve ever played Dragon Age and encountered the blacksmith who knows how to make outrageously high-end kit but is stuck doing what he considers meaningless drudge work, that was kind of it. But it’s all right. Once we’d established that master artisans don’t set up 400 dollar guitars, I did get him to set up my Taylor for me. This guy builds NICE fecking guitars, and in my defense, he does build custom strat/tele clones, which were hanging on one wall, and which is why I thought he might do rather plebian set ups as well. But no, he builds custom strat/teles that are in the 5k range for starters. He does NOT farm the wiring out to some apprentice on the line somewhere.

Just discovered a wrinkle in Medicare D that one can take advantage of.

A new prescription (no generic available) is a tier 3 drug, the cost of which has now put me in the prescription donut hole.

My health insurance maven told me - starting January 1 2022 - to remove the next costliest drug (annual cost ~$550) from my health care prescription package and obtain it thru one of the discount prescription providers.

She said you’ll pay the same or less, and the separate discount cumulative cost won’t count against your donut threshold for the coming year.

We have to realize that the attempted coup is ongoing — not just in GOP states which are doing their best to disenfranchise people of color and other voters who support Democrats — but in Washington DC itself where GOP Senators are maliciously blocking a host of Biden appointees. They are neutering this administration so that it fails, as well as promoting anti-vaccine anti-mask propaganda so that the people will continue to become ill and die, leading to further economic decline.

Meanwhile some Chicago aldermen are trying to stop vaccine mandates, because of the hostility from city workers, especially police and firefighters. The police need to be totally reformed and it’s not clear how that is possible given how entrenched the racism and brutality remain in their departments nationwide.

Tucker would have a major problem with the late Thatcher Longstreth. He always wore a bow tie.

re: #157 Hecuba’s daughter

Because the woman was in Texas. This would not have happened to her in PA; indeed she might have been able to vote legally there.

Felons who have served should be able to vote. The issue about what is a felony is a different matter.

IIRC, she voted having been told her rights had been restored.

No — she didn’t know. But she cast a provisional ballot, it wasn’t counted, and she was charged with a crime anyway.

The woman sentenced to 5 years in prison was a citizen, Crystal Mason. She was on supervised release from prison. The whole case is a disgrace as are the racists in power in Texas.

Oops, guess I mixed her up with another case. Still agree about the disgrace.
