I think I’ve mentioned that we’re going through major internal changes at the evil too big to fail employer. One of my coworkers noted that this was like going to a new job.

That said, I did figure out how to mute my mic on my fancy new bone conducting headset in Microsoft Teams. Just muting from the “omnibar” in Teams causes an annoying beep. I actually have to click into settings, device settings and then mute from there. Apparently MSFT introduced this beeping in a recent Teams upgrade.

Everyone knows the best way to solve a problem is to pretend it doesn’t exist! With the added bonus of inoculating yourself from accusations of racism, because if it doesn’t exist, how can you be racist?!

We all live in different bubbles of one kind or another. People I know who hate Trump and vote straight Democratic were ranting before Tuesday about the failure to get the bipartisan bill through. Manchin and Sinema are to blame for the delay in the BBB, but the public doesn’t see this — what they do see is the inability of the Democrats to pass the hard infrastructure bill. And the progressives will bear the blame if nothing passes and voters will not come out in 2022. It may not be “fair” but it is reality. If voters want more programs to help them, they need to vote for more Democrats.

We all bemoan how the MSM is in the pocket of the GOP — it’s not as though a majority of the country favors the bill. A large majority of Democrats do, but not a majority of this country. You can provide all the examples you want of voters favoring many of the BBB provisions, but these voters will turn completely against the Democrats if the smaller bill fails because it will just illustrate that Democrats refuse to get things done to benefit the country, when they had an opportunity. If the small bill passes, you can use that as an argument to elect more Democrats in 2022. If neither bill passes, then the future is dark indeed.

The Democrats have no leverage over Manchin and Sinema. Let’s see if something finally passes. If it does, then the future will look more optimistic. The Dems can orchestrate a series of ads pointing out each provision that the GOP voted against.

A lot of media “not in balance” issue is the not-so-visible editorial side where they pick and choose events to fit the desired narrative or what the editorial staff decide is the best eyeball-chasing stories to actually broadcast. Which, in part I think, trends rightward since those are chasing the outrage by both the conservatives *and* the liberals. Conservatives who those in the stories echo what they think/want to be true about the various boogeymen the conservative talking points yell about. Liberals essentially get to see ignorance and stupidity in action to feel insulted about.

Might be time to do a mini-poll among my friends and relatives. (And tempted to try on Facebook as well for a slightly wider group.) I’m curious to see what their top 2-3 sources are for current events and politics in the country.

Ha ha! The privileged classes just aren’t what they used to be. Marie Antoinette, for example, showed great courage and composure when she went to the guillotine and she wasn’t the only one by any means. Now a short jail sentence, the kind these gentry-MAGATs gleefully send poor people to every day, has them melting down like spoiled children.

That stopped when there was a haboob with microburst which took off half the roof. It was too much for him to do alone, so he gave in and had the whole roof replaced.

apropos of doing it yourself and because i have five minutes to vent

the other night we saw our dishwasher didnt drain
so i quick reran the cycle
next day it was full again but we hadn’t run it
all of a sudden backing up from the disposal?
nope. it’s clean water

a little google and more than likely its the inlet valve
turned off the supply valve and next day no water, so yup
took off the kick plate, doesnt seem too hard but wait…
it’s copper pipe, a compression fitting and a bad angle for my weary bones so…
probably coulda called a plumber or a local fix-it, but who knows who to call, so…
whirlpool website, we book an appointment and they route it to a local company for the next day! note: “Dishwasher fills with clean water. Likely the inlet valve”

got a confirming email
day before got a confirming text from the local
night before got a confirming phone call from the local
an hour before the appointed time, mrsdm gets a phone call “part is discontinued by whirlpool, nothing can be done, click.”

ok it is 25 years old, but we havent heard one good word from anyone who replaced a dishwasher in the last 15 years.

back to google. oh wait, there is a replacement part.
on the whirlpool website
guess who makes it? whirlpool

off to amazon. the whirlpool store on amazon
same part - half the price

off to youtube
we learn a bit about compression fittings, hopefully enough
we’re gonna tackle it tomorrow morning.
probably not as big a deal as it first seemed to me.
after all, we built a pond (but there’s no water under pressure)

water’s shut off, so if all else fails, then we can call a plumber

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo announced Thursday the birth of a male gorilla, the first born at the Zoo in its 139-year history.

The infant western lowland gorilla was born the morning of October 26, 2021, to mom, 23-year-old Nneka, and dad, 34-year-old Mokolo. He weighed approximately 3 pounds at birth.

The Zoo said when Nneka did not show appropriate maternal care, the troop’s eldest female, Fredrika or “Freddy”, 47, instinctively took over maternal care of the newborn. Freddy has raised four infants.

They want a dumbed down version of history to teach kids. Honestly, the more history I learn and I’m usually reading something historical (listening to the Power Broker now), the more I realize how significant a role race has played in our country and that to deny it is absurd. Highly recommend everyone watch Henry Louis Gates’ four part series on Reconstruction. Infuriating to watch really because Reconstruction had it succeeded in its proponents intentions would have had this country in a much better direction post 1865.

I think that you’re giving them too much credit. They (the GOP politicians) don’t really care what gets taught in schools. Their kids go to boarding schools and Ivy League colleges. CRT is just the latest outrageous outrage of the day, like migrant caravans and whatever BS issue they spin up every cycle to rile up their base.

True. Just another way to rally up the base. I’m disappointed it worked and got enough swing voters into Youngkin’s camp. I saw that Sears, who isn’t from here originally either was pulling the out of state liberals ruined Virginia card. Exactly why I’m pissed about this election. KMUD news director Lauren Schmitt said “immediate action is being taken” after Robo made “several deplorable statements,” the Times of San Diego reports.

Robo had reportedly had the gig for five years.

Robo may also be in trouble for an incident two days before the hearing.

“Meanwhile, Robo is facing a possible defamation suit by the owner of Roma Mia restaurant in the Gaslamp District. Restaurateur Sergio Torrisi said Robo, 39, drove drunk into an outdoor dining area a half-hour after the Fourth Avenue eatery closed at 10 p.m. Sunday and later lied about the Halloween night incident that allegedly saw Robo pepper-spray the Italian restaurant’s manager,” the Times of San Diego reports.

re: #53 Charles Johnson

From my birth in 1966 until I was enrolled in first grade in 1972, I learned from one set of grandparents and their neighbors that black people were scary and bad.

In 1972, Portsmouth’s elementary schools finally integrated. Most of the children of my grandparent’s younger neighbors and I were assigned to a black teacher. (I lived two blocks up the street from that set of grandparents, then.) According to my mother years later, my childhood playmates’ parents raised a big stink about their children being taught by a black person and had their children reassigned to classes taught by white teachers.

My mother’s family were more liberal on race than my father’s (so, from that, you can guess which set of grandparents lived in this neighborhood). According to my mother, she decided not to join the other parents and kept me with the teacher to whom I was assigned.

From the first day of school onward, I learned that my paternal grandparents and their neighbors racist attitudes were bullshit. (Though I didn’t use that term then. Especially not in front of adults.)

Love seeing this racist getting karmic retribution in the courtroom!

Richard Spencer confronted with ‘embarrassing’ evidence as he takes the stand in Charlottesville conspiracy trial

Richard Spencer, the preeminent leader of the white nationalist movement in 2017, took the witness stand in a federal courtroom in Charlottesville, Virginia on Thursday and testified about his role as a headline speaker at the violent Unite the Right rally that resulted in the death of antiracist activist Heather Heyer.

Spencer testified on Thursday that he is not a white supremacist or someone who believes that white people should rule over people of other races.

The plaintiffs played audio for the jury of Spencer launching into a tirade in the presence of co-defendants Jason Kessler, Nathan Damigo and Elliott Kline after learning about Heyer’s death following the Aug. 12, 2017 rally. (The leaked audio was previously published by alt-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos in 2019.

“Little fucking k*kes,” Spencer said. “They get ruled by me. Little f*cking octoroons… I f*cking… my ancestors f*cking enslaved those pieces of f*cking sh*t. I rule the f*cking world. Those pieces of f*cking sh*t get ruled by people like me. They look up and see a face like mine looking down at them. That’s how the f*cking world works. We are going to destroy this f*cking town.”

The extraction of iron from iron ore, and the manufacturing of cement, both take huge quantities of fossil fuel (coal.)

Transitioning those industries will be hard. It is possible, but without burning coal to make the reducing carbon monoxide making iron or cement becomes more complicated.

The best approach will likely come from using hydrogen (from hydrolysis of water.) But to generate the volume of hydrogen needed in one locale will take a great deal of electricity in one place, and nuclear reactors are good at that.

One thing that organizations tend to do with an impending catastrophic event is simply…nothing. There is no good way out that they can see, and there’s only career risk for anyone who tries to grapple with it. For all extraction/processing? The IPCC has put out many graphs on that but I can’t recall off the top of my head. I believe that all the industrial uses of fossil fuels (excludes transportation) is something like one sixth of global emissions.

But this is counting all industrial uses, I think.

The point of all this “change of paradigm” is that we still count wealth and prosperity in terms of how many resources we consume, not the quality of life we gain from using them.

I can understand the feeling but that’s not a problem I’ve ever had. If they get worn a bit here and there by my playing them, then that’s a good thing. Like the brassing on my Leica or the bluing holster wear on a revolver, it’s a sign of a well appreciated & used tool.

Thanks for the opinions, everyone, especially since it was unanimous! If the red one is still there in the morning, I’ll order that one.

this is only based on the photos, one would have to play them both to make a final judgement.

And for max enjoyment of the new instrument - may I suggest you rewatch the Joe Walsh video on how to set up & tune your guitar.

This is a Chinese seller that rips off US guitars but also sells pieces of artwork that would not hold up under playing because they are not built for gigging musicians.
BUT……….if you want a piece of artwork to hang and have the bread may I introduce you to this world of knockoffs.

Yep. I too am a minion of Satan, but my duties are mostly ceremonial.

Political tensions in the pews have calmed, and another survey shows leaders’ Trump support yielded more positives than negatives for evangelicals.

I went to see my son play in his last marching band performance (they’re not very good) last weekend. Wife and I were watching the the kids—band, cheerleaders, students in the stands all being kids—and at one point I stopped and thought, “JFC, this is what Gaetz is into; fucking monster.”

re: #153 Hecuba’s daughter

Or be responsible for the death of our democracy.

Quite a few Evangelical Christians do not want a democracy. They want an actual real life kingdom as they interpret from the Bible as thus described:

Jesus will come down and be a physical king who rules with an iron fist and sword.

All the heathens who oppose the righteous Christians will be killed and cast down into Hell.

Jews will be given a chance to convert and if they don’t they too will be eliminated.

Where the different races end up depends on how virulently racist each Christian sect is.
Some refuse to acknowledge blacks as barely human at all and eternally cursed with “the mark of Cain” and some others think each race will have their own heaven. I know this because I grew up surrounded by these nutcases in Texas.

This is a revenge porn religion we are dealing with and democracy is an enemy of their goals. They are growing in power. This country is fucked as more and more reject critical thinking and replace it with myth and hate.

Sure, agreed, there’s a need for industrial hydrocarbons and metallurgical coal. But, of course, it’s a small fraction of the amount burned for energy. It will be a big downsizing.
