I don’t see how this makes any sense.

What I read online (and don’t know if it’s accurate) was that both bills were supposed to come up for a vote and be voted on together, but conservative Dems in the House balked and refused to support BBB until they had more time to review the legislation.

Pretty understandable, really. This is one of the first times they had a little bit of leverage and great popular support in decades and were forced to give it up, unlike the multiple times in recent memory they could only act as spoilers and were not heeded.

I’m not as negative about the squad as a lot of liberals on Twitter seem to be. I like the idea of keeping pressure on the Biden administration to be more progressive, I think it’s very necessary because it’s so easy to slip backward with so many regressive forces in play. But this no vote strikes me as a bad move. Democrats will get more done if they keep up a united front despite differences. Republicans understand this in their bones, Democrats not so much.

This is a LONG thread, but well worth the time. Basically, the author is comparing some aspects of porn with Evangelical Christian sex advice. And it’s ugly. Christian writers are still putting out damaging tropes about how wives owe husbands sex because if they don’t, their men might wander off.

I read the thread carefully and will read it again before I make signs for tomorrow’s protest at Apologia. Because I know women and girls are being treated badly there. I just know it. And they need to know they can say NO.

I know there’s a few exceptions (the New Deal, Social Security, etc.) but I really doubt a full-on progressive agenda would ever work in America, at least in the fascist-curious one we have now.

I’m surrounded by mostly people who voted against Trump, but would blanche if you called them “Democrats” or “progressive”. If you present them with the idea of the billionaire’s tax, most of them would recoil in horror at the idea of “stealing” money from a defenseless Musk or Gates.

I don’t think America has been, or will ever be, progressive. I cannot see how a country in utter denial, to this day, about how much of its very financial foundation was built on slavery could ever be truly progressive.

The whole idea of “Americans are hard working and pull themselves up by their bootstraps” has morphed into “If you’re poor or having financial problems, you don’t deserve healthcare.”

A metic shit ton of Americans would rather see their kids die in the street with no healthcare available to them than see Jeff Bezos ‘only’ be able to buy three mega yachts instead of nine.

4 of the 13 Republicans who supported BIF voted for impeachment; so their willingness to buck their leadership is well established, but what explains the other 9 votes? Apparently some thought it would help them in the general election and the voters in their district (comment from Bacon — is he Anymouse’s Congressman?) favored the provisions. In any case, Nancy won again, after so many here were certain the bill was doomed due to the hard opposition from several progressives.

If I lived in a nation a third of the size I live in now, but people had access to a doctor regardless of their employment status, I could deal with that.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but the modern translation of “manifest destiny” is “God wants us to take over this entire continent, so he’s gonna look the other way at the genocide we’re committing.”

Confession time. I’m really getting depressed by the fact that nothing seems to be happening with the Bannon subpoena. Republicans love to run out the clock (it’s their best, and sometimes only move). Why are we making it easy for them? The DOJ had to know that this was coming. The have to know that whatever they do Bannon’s team will hire lawyers and attempt to delay any ruling.

In just a few months, it’s 2022 and Republicans will be claiming it’s all about the election.

The Select Committee can subpoena all they want, but if they don’t have to testify what’s the point.

Let’s say after a few months Bannon is forced to testify and he takes the Fifth. Now what? Do you give him immunity and force him? (I say yes. I also say throw him in jail if he refuses).

All this takes time, lots of time. It seems to me that the DOJ is believes that time is infinite.

I know that justice should and can’t be swift, but it seems to me that the DOJ doesn’t realize that the clock is ticking.

I had a whole semester class in high school called Manifest Destiny. Had to have it to graduate. American History was divided into time periods from First Contact(we started with Vikings, and this was in Columbus Ohio back in the 70s)all the way up to Vietnam and the aftermath. We also had state history classes divided into pre settlement and post settlement . And yes, that was pretty much the gist of the class, white people deciding they could make this place better by lightening up the place. After 1980 those classes were gone and really watered down standards took over. We still missed a lot of things, Tulsa, massacres of blacks and their communities being destroyed if they were even remotely successful, etc. But Manifest Destiny wasn’t sugar coated in my classroom materials and texts.

This is how I didn’t want to spend the weekend - my Sony WH-1000XM3’s decided to fail spectacularly and I can’t even perform a factory reset on them. So I had to go to Costco to get a duplicate receipt so Sony can drop-ship me a replacement set of cans. In the interim, Costco was selling Bose NC 700 cans for almost twice the price, but one-up the Sony as the case can also charge the cans - so that’s a big win for me.

Not necessarily. Precedent is kind of a funny thing. In particular, precedent from another circuit generally has to make a compelling case to be applicable. Any district court under the 5th Circuit now has an applicable precedent, but states in other circuits are going to have to work to prove that the 5th Circuit precedent applies. And in particular, given the flimsiness of the 5th’s justification, there is next to no chance that there will be any other emergency injunctions.

We went to the state capitol today to eat lunch and do a little shopping. Apparently we got there at the tail end of an anti-vax protest. We say people walking away from a rally with flags and signs—one said, “RN for 20 years; I know the science.” It was warm enough to eat outside of the restaurant by the street, so we were treated to about 20 cars tooting their horns, all festooned with US and Gadsden flags and yelling from the open windows things like “don’t let the media divide us—they are in the pocket of big pharma* and are profiting off of the poison.” They weren’t threatening, but they are persistent and noisy.

*not entirely wrong about big pharma and the media. When I click on even (or esp.) MSNBC in the morning their ads are almost all for pharmaceuticals. It’s just that it doesn’t apply to the covid vaccines.

Because the diary wasn’t “found”, she didn’t “leave it” anywhere. She was burglarized in October 2020; the DoJ (then under AG Barr) opened a case about it at the time. It wasn’t the Biden admin started this investigation.

I mean, that was basically what it was understood to mean at the time, except that the term genocide didn’t exist at the time. Mostly they wanted the land, not the people, which is why despite having American troops in Mexico City at the end of the Mexican-American War, Mexico is still its own country

By comparison, it was almost ridiculously easy to do this on a manual typewriter. (Still is in some cases of extreme retro-writing)

I’m pretty sure Google Docs has a table feature too that lets you do this. Select the text and right click, there should be a Table option.

2 On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup Dialog Box Launcher.

The County Judge is basically the Executive Director for the unincorporated areas of all Counties in Texas. It’s a big deal, and in Counties like Harris, which is chock full of unincorporated suburbs, it’s a *very* big deal.

The level of governance underneath the County Judges are Justices of the Peace, who represent geographical areas within the unincorporated areas of the Counties. But it’s the Judge who heads the County Boards, made up the JoPs.

The McConnell not wanting successful government lines up with my theory that Senate Republicans really don’t want to do away with the filibuster even when they’re in the majority. It’s easier to blame a lack of “progress” (really regression, but whatever) on the obstructionist Democrats and keep the donations rolling in. Added bonus: they know that their stated agenda would actually be incredibly unpopular and thus it’s better to have the issue to campaign on rather than policy achievements
