Transient Whales, from the studio album Starting Now
open.spotify.com

Song Produced and recorded by Mikal Blue and Toad the Wet Sprocket
Video Concept: Chris Orwig
Video Shot & Edited: Sean McCue & Nina McCue

Lyrics:
I miss calling some place home
I miss thinking I could know
Where I would spend my final days
Or plant a seed and watch it grow
I don’t like waking up alone
Don’t like cooking meals for one
I miss the chaos and the noise
The family work that’s never done

Now in dreams I swim with the transient whales
All we have is each other and the songs we share
The songs we share

We are never standing still
The Earth is spinning round the Sun
The Sun is swinging through the heavens
And time is always pushing on
But this body begs for comfort
And it groans with every change
Well it hopes it will not suffer
Prays in vain it will not age

And in dreams I swim with the transient whales
All we have is each other and the songs we share
The songs we share

I love jokes that last for years
And having people dropping by
I liked being at the center
Of a place that felt alive
Now my home is in the ocean
Where my song can travel free
Carried softly by the water
To wherever you may be

Now in dreams I swim with the transient whales
All we have is each other and the songs we share
The songs we share

Completely OT but think of this bonus for a working stiff.

The DST and EST switch is really a thing that screws with people who work by the clock.
When I was traveling back and forth to Indiana from Pennsylvania, the area of northern Indiana and southern Michigan called Michiana never changed their time. So in effect, when DST went into effect they stayed standard time, which then actually made them Central time which made them an hour earlier than my DST clock.
In effect I had a cushion. My time was 5, there is was 4 and it saved my ass more than once in the summer when things were booming at the Modular, Factory Built, Sectional, Pre Fab, industry of “bet yawl can’t find all the thing we cheated with” Industry.
“That called for a 2x4.”
Yes that’s why I put TWO 2x2’s in there stapled together with staples. FIXED!
I hear that is no longer the case and they are now just the same as EST.
As I no longer have to concern myself with that I
am content.

Happy Happy

I forget how spoiled we are by modern computers.

I am trying to get networking running correctly on an emulated SS-5 running SunOS 4.1.4 (iow pure BSD Unix) circa 1993. Yow what a mess, I’d forgotten so much of it out of mercy to my brain.

“He Could And Likely Will Try To Do It Again”: Jake Tapper Is Taking Republican Warnings About Trump Seriously
The CNN anchor talks his new documentary, Trumping Democracy: An American Coup, the lonely road of refusing to have election deniers on his show, and whether he’s watched Tucker Carlson’s competing January 6 special.

What are some of the things that really stood out to you while creating the special?
These Republicans, to be doing what they’re doing, it’s the right thing to do. There’s no professional reward, there’s no personal reward for speaking out, none. I think the degree to which these individuals are willing to sacrifice their professional lives, because it’s the right thing to do, it’s something that just sticks with me. Beyond that, Adam Kinzinger said something that I found really compelling—when he talked about driving on a road and you see a guardrail where there’s been an accident and it’s all banged up. You see that the guardrail held this time but it might not hold the next time. That’s an image I can’t get out of my head.

“Carville is not alone in this point of view.” WHAT point of view? That “wokeness” is bad? She just repeats this bullshit without even bothering to clarify wtf she’s talking about. That’s what irritated Soledad, and me too.

Bottom line, she couldn’t clarify it because it’s a bullshit term that came out of right wing propaganda, and yeah I know Carville isn’t supposed to be right wing, and yet he repeats it too.

Ah J. Gresham Machen who believed Pearl Buck was an infidel and when he lost his ecclesiastical case he and his fellow reactionaries seceded from the Presbyterian Church and formed the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

And two years later Carl McIntire hurled the same charges against the OPC leadership, he lost and he took his every more reactionary disciples out of the OPC to form the Bible Presbyterian Church.

The right-wing reactionaries we deal with today have their roots back in the Fundamentalist founders in the late 19th and early 20th century.

This happened in a small way 15 years ago to the church I grew up in (and it was a milquetoast country club Presbyterian church by the time I was going). A group of younger evangelicals my age, many of whom I went to church with, decided that the church was too liberal and built their own church in a cornfield outside of town—a mini megachurch. When my mom and dad, some of the oldest members, confronted them over their doctrine, the response was, “all I know is that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior and what you are doing is wrong!” The “what you are doing” was to approve of gay marriage.

Urban violence… can’t blame BLM here:

Northern Ireland: bus hijacked and set alight on outskirts of Belfast

A bus has been set on fire after it was hijacked by four masked men on the outskirts of Belfast.

The men boarded the double-decker bus in Church Road near Rathcoole in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, at about 7.45pm on Sunday, ordered passengers to get off and set it alight.

The latest act of violence comes less than a week after another bus was burnt out by masked men in a loyalist area of Newtownards, County Down, sparking fresh fears of Brexit-related violence in the region.

[…]

Violence also broke out twice last week in west Belfast between youths from the nationalist Springfield Road and loyalist Shankill Road.

Following a protest against the Northern Ireland protocol, police were attacked with missiles and fireworks on Wednesday and Friday night.

BoJo is going to fall on his sword.

Not out of any sense of duty.

He’s going to be pushed upon it.

The news outlets are a buzz with rumors that BoJo wants to trigger Article 16 of the Brexit agreement he negotiated. In response, if he actually does that, the EU will probably just pack up and close down the whole effort to negotiate a special trade deal with the UK.

Then the border between the RoI and NI will become hard, with all the usual checks at border points between two nations without free movement.

And that will set off the Irish nationalists.

It’s all going to spiral out of control.

Unless BoJo gives up.

And if he doesn’t give up willingly (with this fight with the EU), then someone will shove him upon his sword.

Because the last thing the UK ought to do is close its borders even more, because the UK can’t feed itself, it can’t fuel itself, it can’t clothe itself.

What a dummy. That argument still proves that slavery was the reason for the war. The anti-slavery northerners didn’t want slave labor vying with paid labor in new states, so in that way it’s true. But it still proves the point that the south was willing to fight to keep their slaves and to create new slave territories.

I’ve been told the dollar value of slaves the South held was $3 billion….in 1865 dollars.

If that’s not an argument that slavery was at the heart of every economic reason why the Civil War occurred, than I don’t know what is.

Nah. He’s riffing off the old evangelical theme that men are supposed to be bread-winners and women are supposed to be homemakers and baby mamas. “Video games and porn” is the giveaway here; he’s decrying what he deems to be lazy men who, in his view, refuse to contribute to white evangelical society, instead selfishly spending their efforts in their own self-interest.

The slaveowners *were* leasing out their slaves to work in the factories that had been established in the South. Presumably for a good enough rate that it was competitive to keeping them as agricultural workers.

One of the interesting tour is the Hermitage, the plantation of Andrew Jackson. It shows how the place prospered before the civil war with the free labor of slaves, and basically was not a sustainable operation after slavery. It was already going downhill before the civil war because of bad investments by Jr. Just like his admirer Trump. Soon we are going to see the business acumen of Donald Trump, Jr. take effect.

I’ve pondered going back to school to get a Ph.D., but I think I just don’t have the heart to make it through all the academic hoops anymore:

He always wanted a Ph.D. in physics. He finally earned it at 89

The difficulty of doing physics is, well, it’s hard.

Upper level E&M is torture. Relativity is torture. Quantum Mechanics is not so tortuous as long as you don’t expect your intution to be of use.

And then the specialty fields for a Ph.D. - all make my brain hurt. Conceivably I could do it with enough pain, but again, I’m not sure I have the heart to work through the thousands of hours of problem solving to prepare to pass the qualifying exams.

But I admire people who follow their dreams.

The plus side to continually learning new things is that you’ll grow older more slowly.

People who stop reading, stop challenging themselves, go downhill mentally quickly as they get older.

One reason why musicians and conductors seem to last longer is, I propose, because they continually use their brain to make music. Making music is different than listening to music.

Just like writing a book is different than reading a book.

Someone is trying to make an issue of the maps-thing again:

Are most maps of the world wrong?

Thinking Alaska was as big as Brazil? You can thank the representation of the world printed onto maps.

Yes, map projections are wonky things.

And yes, map projections probably reify all sorts of social biases.

But the truth is simply that maps were made for navigation, and the rotation of the Earth dictates how we navigate around the world.

So we’re stuck with projections that give us longitudinal lines that converge at the poles.

But most people avoid geography anyway, and most young people these days probably have never needed to read a paper map.

re: #73 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I ponder, seriously, of going back and finishing my undergraduate studies at least. Paleoanthropology. It’s a great, interesting, field these days.

re: #79 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Someone is trying to make an issue of the maps-thing again:

Are most maps of the world wrong?

Yes, map projections are wonky things.

And yes, map projections probably reify all sorts of social biases.

But the truth is simply that maps were made for navigation, and the rotation of the Earth dictates how we navigate around the world.

So we’re stuck with projections that give us longitudinal lines that converge at the poles.

But most people avoid geography anyway, and most young people these days probably have never needed to read a paper map.

It also doesn’t help that all the land masses in the world are mostly in the Northern Hemisphere. Of course the far north parts are going to get distorted. The South would be too if there was anything there at similar distances from the equator as in the north. Antarctica’s size is massively inflated on the same maps as well.

Another one of those things I file under “Is this really worth getting upset about? Seriously?”

Aaron Rodgers is the epitome of the right-wing douchecanoe stereotype. He’s self-important to the point of believing he’s the center of his own universe. He thinks that his hours of research are better than the thousands of hours of research compiled by real experts. He literally could not care less about what happens to other people around him, because he doesn’t believe that anything he does impacts anyone around him unless he is doing so explicitly.

He needs to be told by the NFL that he cannot play again till he’s vaccinated. Properly and provably. But the reality of money says that won’t happen, especially given the moral cowardice of the NFL. I saw on ESPN that other team owners are livid with the NFL because their teams got penalized much more harshly by the league for COVID protocol violations, but the Packers are getting to skate purely because it’s the famous Aaron Rodgers.

It’s possible that the experimentation is too expensive or just that no one has yet come up with (or published) a radical new insight or paradigm on how the universe works. I don’t think it reflects a limitation on our brains.

The great physicist Albert Michelson said in 1894:

While it is never safe to affirm that the future of Physical Science has no marvels in store even more astonishing than those of the past, it seems probable that most of the grand underlying principles have been firmly established and that further advances are to be sought chiefly in the rigorous application of these principles to all the phenomena which come under our notice. It is here that the science of measurement shows its importance — where quantitative work is more to be desired than qualitative work. An eminent physicist remarked that the future truths of physical science are to be looked for in the sixth place of decimals.

I suspect the world will be equally surprised sometime this century, if we don’t destroy the world first.

I’ve been told the dollar value of slaves the South held was $3 billion….in 1865 dollars.

If that’s not an argument that slavery was at the heart of every economic reason why the Civil War occurred, than I don’t know what is.

“…by 1860, there were more millionaires (slaveholders all) living in the lower Mississippi Valley than anywhere else in the United States. In the same year, the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire U.S. economy, worth more than all manufacturing and railroads combined. So, of course, the war was rooted in these two expanding and competing economies—but competing over what? What eventually tore asunder America’s political culture was slavery’s expansion into the Western territories.”

I went for a bike ride today, a short 18 mile put. The air was cool, 60F, and moving along at 15 MPH it chilled my nose which started running from the cold air. I need to find a solution for winter riding. Maybe ride with a KN-95 mask on to keep the nose warm.

I used to love to cross country ski in the wilderness in the dark using a headlamp. I’m going to get some lights for night riding since the days are getting short. Trail riding by headlights seems to be similarly attractive to me as skiing by headlamps. I’m weird that way.

That’s some piss poor front lighting. (My current headlight came on the bike and is slightly less piss poor but not by much.) I’m thinking of 4-1000 lumen headlights. I’ve got brake and taillights and a safety flashing light on the back already.

In other words, Hee Hawley believes every man should be Al Bundy.

Again, those who do not understand a concept, such as manhood, patriotism or Christianity, simply cling to arbitrary and subjective symbols that we come to associate with these concepts, like pickup trucks, flag lapel pins or crucifixes.

Germany is seeing a record rate of COVID-19 infections as vaccinations slow. Unlike some other European countries, it has balked at making vaccinations mandatory for any professional group.

Germany never had a hard lockdown, even at the height of the Pandemic there were simply restrictions on congregating in groups of two or more outside one’s household.

And they had widespread free testing, which has been largely done away with, which is unfortunate.

Funny, not just because they can’t spell. If everyone that wanted to control women cared about adopting available children, there wouldn’t be hundreds and hundreds of kids waiting to be adopted in every state.

This was a plot point in The Handmaid’s Tale. Handmaids were forced to conceive and give birth and their children given away to Commanders’ families. But even Margaret Atwood had to create the premise of a worldwide infertility pandemic for this to be feasible. Also, they didn’t get around to telling us “Commanders’ wives don’t want Handmaids of color” until season 3, when the book was very clear that there were no Black people in Gilead.

The Trumpiest Republicans are mirroring what he said. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) tweeted: “RINOS just passed this wasteful $1.2 trillion dollar ‘infrastructure’ bill. Pelosi did not have the votes in her party to pass this garbage. Time to name names and hold these fake republicans accountable.” Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) said: “Vote for this infrastructure bill and I will primary the hell out of you.” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) can always be counted to chime in to support Trump, so she said: “Republicans who hand over their voting card to Nancy Pelosi to pass Biden’s Communist takeover of America will feel the anger of the GOP voter.” So fixing roads and providing rural Republicans with Internet service is a Communist plot. Why didn’t we realize that? This whole time, we were thinking it was a Canadian plot. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) added: “I can’t believe Republicans just gave the Democrats their socialism bill.” One has to wonder how these representatives would have responded if Trump had passed the identical bill. ‘Barely concealed bloodlust’: Claremont Institute laid out detailed plan for using cops to overturn Trump’s election loss

The right-wing Claremont Institute published a report in mid-October 2020 that gamed out a scenario where Donald Trump would remain in office through an alliance between law enforcement and militant extremists.

And golly gosh folks! Who do you think wrote that report?

The report was prepared by attorney John Eastman, who authored a memo laying out another strategy for keeping Trump in office, and former Trump deputy national security advisor K.T. McFarland, as well as Kevin Roberts, then-executive director of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, alt-right figure Jeff Giesea and right-wing blogger Charles Haywood, reported The Bulwark.

She was big into UFO’s (while at the same time she did not think we really went to the Moon), but towards the end of last year, she really started going down the QAnon political CT rabbit hole (Hillary had Seal Team 6 murdered, the Chinese were funding BLM, Mike Pence was part of the Pizza Parlor Pedophile Plot, etc…) and it really came to a head over the election and ensuing electoral clusterf*ck

So apparently the new hot topic du jour on Twitter today is whether Dems need to abandon anti-racism platforms in order to win going forward, because apparently the only way to win is to shut the fuck up about race and not hurt white people’s feelings.

The fact that there are as many resounding yeses to that as I’m seeing makes me die inside.

FBI was looking for him, but never contemplated checking airports to catch him before he and his ilk fled the country to a nation for which we don’t have extradition?

In other words, what’s the point of no fly lists and FBI if they can’t catch guys who are wanted for serious crimes like trying to overthrow the govt if you’re not bothering to check all of the possible means of escape from the country.

You have to show ID to get on a plane. Did no one check this against the FBI wanted lists?

Heads should roll.

But if he did nothing wrong, why flee the country to one for which we don’t have extradition. That’s right, because he’s guilty as sin.

No inherent contempt powers - Congress has to rely on a referral to prosecutors who then have to make a determination to even bring to a grand jury who may or may not agree, and that all takes time. And the worst that can happen is an effective slap on the wrist.

Not to mention the rickety wooden bridges that barely support a pickup truck over kilometer-deep chasms in Honduras. That entire country is mountains covered with trees, i.e. Not Tank Country.

Then there’s El Salvador, where the roads are even worse. Or they could try the coastal route in the bottomless swamps of Belize.

Also: where the everloving F do they refuel?

Those tanks would be stripped for parts and the crews would be happily drinking rum on the warm beaches in the Quintana Roo, if they even made it that far …

And he obviously knows it’s wrong because he lied about it. So a big Fuck Him from me.

Of course a real point of irony is that there is no 2nd Amendment in Russia, I mean Belarus. Or any other Amendments for that matter.

The flight to “Freedom” under the Russian umbrella is underway by American terrorists …point being the 2nd amendment is and was always horseshit cover for the desire for a racist dictatorship.

We will offer a summer program for college students called “Forbidden Courses” that invites top students from other universities to join us for a spirited discussion about the most provocative questions that often lead to censorship or self-censorship in many universities.

So they gathered the market data and decided what we really need is something worse than Trump University. Got it.

I don’t have to imagine that hard. It’s quite plausible.

There are plenty of private religiously affiliated universities that offer the same kind of safe spaces for insular white conservative bigoted snowflakes. The world doesn’t need yet another.
