ROCKLIN, Calif. (KTXL) — A California high school is investigating after a screenshot surfaced of a controversial question that parents said was included in a history quiz.

Whitney High School, located in the Sacramento suburb of Rocklin, released a statement Saturday saying it would investigate the quiz.

The question supposedly asked respondents to identify “a group of complete idiots.” The options shown were the “KKK,” “all of Florida,” “FOX news,” and “Texans.”

Often here I have whined about the lack of ideological exposition from Democratic leaders.

Let me explain “ideological” - a set of ideas that form a worldview by which people can weigh choices and decisions.

I don’t want ranting ideologues.

But we do need leaders who can clearly articulate an ideology for America in the 21st century.

And what this does not mean is just empty praise and pablum.

We need leaders who will argue for why we need to adhere to certain ideas, or throw other ideas to the wayside.

I would love for Biden to be able to give a short (10 minute) speech on why democracy is preferable over a strong-man, on why democracy means helping people to vote, not trying to hinder people from voting.

Also, I’d like some direct language on how destructive and self-centered the ideas spouted by the likes of the Sen. Kennedy and Cong. Gosar will hurt you, the average Americans.

But I won’t hold my breath because I know Biden is a mechanic who works in quiet. He’s so old school that many of the talking heads on media can’t relate to what he’s doing. Nor can they explain it to the Americans who still watch or listen to the old media.

All too true. The American left has been a mess since WWI and we make the Democrats look like disciplined lockstep troopers with the schisms and infighting. But we keep plugging at it anyway. Maybe someone else here discussed this aspect of the new “University” of Austin but…

University of Austin President Pano Kanelos has said the school is in response to institutions that produce graduates that are “incapable and unwilling to participate in the core activity of democratic governance.” The website for the school said it is focused on “the intrepid pursuit of the truth” and seek to expose students to the “the deepest wisdom of civilization.”

Does that mean the institution is directing itself to those who supported Trump in his efforts to overturn the election? It would seem that these individuals are the ones most in need in learning how to participate in democratic governance, starting with Trump, Meadows, Eastman, Cleta Mitchell, Gosar, et al. down to all who stormed the Capitol.

So this very dark article came out this evening.

It describes a plan to start civil unrest, infiltrate right wing militias into the police forces used to contain it, and round up opponents of Trump.

When reading it, remember that the plan was aspirational rather than a fact. That may be corrected in a second attempt.

Interesting! The world is going through a lot of pandemic related stress right now. As well as climatic issues. And, of course, all of the stupidity we humans add to the mix.

Those of us in the Continental United States are extremely fortunate to be a massive food producer and exporter. If there are shortages of basic food staples here, it is most likely a supply chain issue rather than a problem with the amount of food nationally produced.

China may not be as well situated.

All too true. The American left has been a mess since WWI and we make the Democrats look like disciplined lockstep troopers with the schisms and infighting. But we keep plugging at it anyway. Despite it’s flaws, the DSA can be useful in helping drag the party back towards the center and maybe even the left eventually. We finally got a new dishwasher installed. It took a month. There is little enjoyment in washing dishes by hand. The washer is so quiet! 39 dB they claim, my dB meter only goes down to a scale of 60 and I have to get really close to get a -9dB. Our last washer was reasonably quiet for the first year and a half then for the next six years it sounded like the gearbox wanted to explode. Just a guess on the sound level would be 75 dB at 1 meter.

A metallurgist in the US state of Washington has pleaded guilty to fraud after she spent decades faking the results of strength tests on steel that was being used to make Navy submarines.

Prosecutors say Elaine Marie Thomas, 67, gave false positive readings for strength and toughness tests in at least 240 cases between 1985 and 2017.

Authorities did not disclose which vessels were affected.

But there was no indication that any submarine hulls had failed.

Ms Thomas, of Auburn, Washington, was the director of metallurgy at a foundry in Tacoma that supplied steel castings used by Navy contractors to make submarine hulls, the US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington said in a statement.

The foundry was acquired by the manufacturer Bradken in 2008, according to the indictment. There was no evidence that the company’s management was aware of the fraud until May 2017. At that time, prosecutors say, a lab employee found out that test cards had been altered and that other discrepancies existed in the records.

A short boring story about electric home appliances.

There was a discussion yesterday about how electric appliances in the home actually created more work for women, such as electric vacuums or automatic washing machines.

In my home, labour is divided (so this isn’t “women’s work” but “who’s better at it” work). Generally, I do the laundry.

Since we were married, we’ve owned four washing machines.

In Oklahoma, we had an ancient Kenmore top loader, which died when the inlet valve failed and we determined repairing the machine was more expensive than buying new.

The second was a front-loading Whirlpool. We moved that with us to Nebraska, but not too long after we moved here it had a failure and died.

Over the course of months, Whirlpool sent out first mechanics, then engineers, to figure out why our under-warranty machine wouldn’t work.

During that time, my neighbour to the north moved to Arizona and sold all their property. Out of that sale, we bought their 1940’s Speed Queen wringer washer so we still had something to wash clothes with (nearest Laundromat is sixty miles away).

Eventually, Whirlpool decided the machine needed to go back to their factory to study, and paid us for it. We replaced it eventually with a rebuilt Frigidaire front-loader and stored the Speed Queen.

Of those, the wringer washer by far requires the most work (not counting using a clothesline over a dryer).

So while appliances might have created more housework, improvements in appliances have reduced the same work.

Most importantly, they ignore that the whole reason the vaccines come with a warning about myocarditis is BECAUSE those incidents were reported via VAERS.

I was speaking with my former boss over the weekend. Lovely woman, now in her 90’s (!), gave me my first start way back when.

She’s an avid NYT reader and was exhorting me to read the latest David Brooks editorial in which he (insert massive eyeroll here) patiently explains to the reader what Democrats need to do reconnect to voters after last week’s elections.

I politely but firmly re-iterated my, shall we say, distaste for Mr. Brooks, and while admittedly having not read the piece, stated that his advice probably boiled down to “Democrats need to vote for everything Republicans support.”

I tried explaining that the bigger problem is that the party is beyond saving at this point, and that “moderate” Republicans are a non-factor in turning the party around. Often times, they are utterly fine with the regressive and inhumane policies that makes up their platform; they just don’t to appear as nuts.

I love this woman like my own grandma, but she’s stuck on the idea that moderate Republicans can still turn this shit around and that Brooks is an intellectual Democrats need to listen to.

Anybody read this editorial at all? I’m having a shitty week so far, and I really don’t need the ulcer that this thing would probably induce.

So, right before election day, Curtis Sliwa, the GOP candidate for NYC mayor, was hit by a vehicle in NYC. Well, it turns out that Sliwa was running across the street, against the light, and the taxi that hit him had no chance to stop.

That’s why Curtis was so hesitant to talk about the incident after it happened and why we shouldn’t expect any charges against the driver. It was Sliwa who acted recklessly by running out into traffic. He’s lucky he wasn’t killed.

Seems to me the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act, marriage equality, the Fair Credit Act, women’s reproductive rights, &c are all “culture war” issues on which Democrats have been good at thinking about culture.

Here in Conservatopia, we’re up for a second minimum wage increase referendum in the last few years. (This one goes to $15.00 per hour, though it is gradual.) Maryjane will be back on the ballot after conservatives blocked it last time. We passed Medicaid expansion via referendum (though it took a lawsuit to get the governor to implement it after it passed).

We were happy T-Mobile users but we switched to Mint Mobile last year. They use T-Mobile’s 4G network. Getting the phones online with the new SIMs was a little shaky, but the service has been rock solid. Literally saving $60-$70 a month on the cellular bill.

Along those lines:

I was speaking with my former boss over the weekend. Lovely woman, now in her 90’s (!), gave me my first start way back when.

She’s an avid NYT reader and was exhorting me to read the latest David Brooks editorial in which he (insert massive eyeroll here) patiently explains to the reader what Democrats need to do reconnect to voters after last week’s elections.

I politely but firmly re-iterated my, shall we say, distaste for Mr. Brooks, and while admittedly having not read the piece, stated that his advice probably boiled down to “Democrats need to vote for everything Republicans support.”

I tried explaining that the bigger problem is that the party is beyond saving at this point, and that “moderate” Republicans are a non-factor in turning the party around. Often times, they are utterly fine with the regressive and inhumane policies that makes up their platform; they just don’t to appear as nuts.

I love this woman like my own grandma, but she’s stuck on the idea that moderate Republicans can still turn this shit around and that Brooks is an intellectual Democrats need to listen to.

Anybody read this editorial at all? I’m having a shitty week so far, and I really don’t need the ulcer that this thing would probably induce.

We were happy T-Mobile users but we switched to Mint Mobile last year. They use T-Mobile’s 4G network. Getting the phones online with the new SIMs was a little shaky, but the service has been rock solid. Literally saving $60-$70 a month on the cellular bill.

Doesn’t hurt that Ryan Reynolds, all-around Canadian nice guy, is a co-owner of Mint Mobile…

Mrs. Fish would use a can of chicken soup, a bag of frozen vegetables, and a can of crescent roll dough to make miniature chicken pot pies. That was an excellent budget meal when I was still fairly poor. We would also do the “enhanced ramen”, and similar with macaroni and cheese (using deli meat or hot dogs, maybe frozen vegetables).

Roast Beast, Chicken stew, the worst was Beef A La Dutch which was stew beef in pea soup. So bad folks just threw it in the trash and the flies wouldn’t come near the can.

So glad I had a GE Toaster Oven in my dorm room and I could buy Swanson frozen dinners for 75¢. I got addicted to the Swiss Steak dinners. I’d clean them out when I went to the Giant Eagle or A&P by the campus.

We had a fantastic cafeteria at my university, so there were a LOT of students that would eat on-campus most or all of the time. The flip side of that is that our campus was in bumfuck middle of nowhere; the nearby town had one small sit-down restaurant that was family owned and operated since the early 1960’s, but otherwise, you were driving 20+ minutes for any kind of food. I think there was a gas station on the far side of town, with the usual assortment of stuff, but the town didn’t even have its own grocery store.

True story: I went to a Verizon store to see how much of a price break I could get over my T-Mobile bill. Now up my way, Verizon is still LTE 4G whereas T-Mobile has 5G. So for giggles I had the Verizon salescrirter run a Speedtest. He pulled 70 Mbps. I then ran a Speedtest on my T-Mobile phone. With their 5G, I got close to 140 MBps. As I left, I said so much for Verizon’s superior network.

Gonna go talk to them about switching over from AT&T.

Instant noodles are popular with the homeless, for obvious reasons. It was my idea to start stocking them in bulk at our church pantry. It’s been a big hit. We have one client who likes Vienna sausages with Ramen or Cup O Noodles. Haven’t tried that but it might work. Canned chopped ham ($1 for 4 ounces) definitely does. For hungry people who have homes (a larger group than the actual homeless), the frozen mixed vegetables are an excellent choice for all kinds of things. I never liked the canned mixed veggies, but I discovered recently that the Wal Mart store brand of “Mixed Vegetable Medley” is actually pretty good. I got some of those for my emergency food stash, too.

I know all this will absolutely horrify suburban foody snobs. Fuck them and their pretensions.

This is why courts have shied away from “religious sincerity arguments.”

All these questions are crap anyway, since Mr. Ramirez is only asking for a prayer with human contact, not a suspension of his sentence.

If the court can decide what is sincere religious belief, then the court can rule against any minority religious belief as “not sincere.”

Ofttimes justices will ask questions which are intentionally antagonistic to see what the thinking of the respondents are, but I don’t trust these guys as far as I can throw ‘em.

I’m careful about salt intake. Paying real attention made an amazing, and pretty easy, difference on my blood pressure. Noodles aren’t too bad in that respect. Microwave popcorn and especially cheese crackers definitely are but we do not include those in the pantry. Boxed crackers (which we do have) are bad enough but nobody wants the unsalted types. Excessive salt intake is a problem for the homeless and poor but less of a priority than having food in the first place. It is not a big problem for people who live on the street in hot weather. Most of the time though, this is why it is a bad idea, not to mention excessively expensive, to buy fast food for the homeless. We see this a lot.

I’m a respiratory therapist. With the highly contagious Delta variant, the trajectory of the patient, when they’re vaccinated, most likely ends after STAGE 1.

Get vaccinated. If you choose not to here’s what to expect:

STAGE 1. You’ve had debilitating symptoms for a few days, but now it’s so hard to breath you come to the emergency room. Your oxygen saturation levels tell us you need a supplemental flow of 1 to 4 liters of 02 per minute. We start you on antivirals, steroids, anticoagulants or monoclonal antibodies. You’re run down for several days, but if we can wean you off 02 you get discharged. You’ll survive

STAGE 2. It becomes ever harder for you to breathe. “Like drowning” patients describe. Your 02 requirements increase from 4 liters to 15 liters to 40 liters per minute. Sitting up or going to the bathroom is impossible because of your need for 02. You are transferred to intensive care.

STAGE 3. You are exhausted from hyperventilating to supply your body with air. We put you on “positive pressure” ventilation, a big bulky mask velcro’d tightly to your face so the machine can pop open your lungs.

STAGE 4. You are severely fatigued from trying to breathe. A blood sample tells us your 02 levels are critically low. We prepare to intubate you. We suggest you call your loved ones if you are able and if there’s time. It may be the last time they hear your voice.
We connect you to a ventilator. You are sedated and paralyzed, fed through a tube, hooked to a Foley catheter and a rectal tube. We turn your limp body regularly so you don’t develop bed sores. We bathe you. We flip you on your stomach to allow for better oxygenation. We will try experimental therapeutics.

STAGE 5. Some survive stage 4. Unfortunately you have not improved after several days on the ventilator. Your infested lungs need assistance and time to heal, something that an ECMO machine, which bypasses your lungs and oxygenates your blood can do. But alas, our community hospital doesn’t have one. If you are stable enough you will get transferred to another hospital for that.

STAGE 6. The pressure on your lungs is so high that air can leak into your chest cavity. We insert tubes to clear it out. Your kidneys fail to filter the byproducts of the drugs we give you. Despite diuretics, your entire body swells from fluid retention. You require dialysis to help with renal function. You are susceptible to infections. a chest x-ray shows fluid in your lungs. A blood clot may show up. We can’t prevent these at this point. We can only treat them. If your blood pressure drops, we will administer vasopressors to bring it up, but your heart may stop anyway. After several rounds of CPR we get a pulse. but soon, your family will have to make a tough decision.

STAGE 7. After several meetings your family decides to withdraw care. We extubate you, turn off the breathing machinery. We set up a final face-time call with your oved ones. As we work we hear crying and loving good-byes. We cry too, and we hold your hand until your last natural breath.

Our brother praised DeSantis Saturday for his early comprehensive actions in getting the elderly (was it just the wealthy elderly?) vaccinated. As soon as my kids were old enough to find their way around the kitchen, I told them that I would teach them how to make their favorite food. So each one chose their favorite: spaghetti & meatballs, mac & cheese, lasagna, frozen pizza (they were too intimidated to make a whole pizza from scratch), burgers, hotdogs, etc. My middle daughter loved fried chicken but she was so grossed out by touching a raw chicken. She didn’t learn how to cook until she got married. My sons all loved to cook.

I don’t think many voters see themselves as Leftists. I’ve met one Leftist, and thousands of Liberals in my lifetime.

I have seen a lot of fascists call Liberals “Leftists” in the past couple of decades.

Which I suppose is better than it was before, where calling oneself a ‘liberal’ may as well have been the equivalent of wearing a Ronald McDonald outfit to a job interview, as far as the political culture was concerned.

It’s still just fucking frustrating to think that we may honest to god be at the upper limit of what we can do now, that White Backlash and the Backfire Effect will remain too powerful of a bulwark to change anything else. It’s like Chris Rock said back when: “When you’re white, the sky’s the limit. When you’re black, the limit’s the sky.”

Robert Malone—a medical doctor and an infectious-disease researcher—recently suggested that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines might actually make COVID-19 infections worse. He chuckled as he imagined Anthony Fauci announcing that the vaccination campaign was all a big mistake (“Oh darn, I was wrong!”) and would need to be abandoned. When he floated that nightmare scenario during a recent podcast interview with Steve Bannon, both men seemed almost delighted at the prospect of public-health officials and pharmaceutical companies getting their comeuppance. “This is a catastrophe,” Bannon declared, beaming at his guest. “You’re hearing it from an individual who invented the mRNA [vaccine] and has dedicated his life to vaccines. He’s the opposite of an anti-vaxxer.”

Before going any further, let’s be clear that the back-and-forth between Bannon and Malone was premised on misinformation. The vaccines have repeatedly been shown to help prevent symptomatic coronavirus infections and reduce their severity. Malone was riffing on a botched sentence in a USA Today article, one that was later deleted but not before being screenshotted and widely shared.
