$1.2 trillion: 60% of what we spent on Afghanistan. Imagine the infrastructure we could’ve built them with that money. Heck, they would be our friends forever.

From an earlier thread:

Yes!

It was always amusing to meet FNG’s who wanted to be on that first tank into Moscow. They were so disillusioned to find out that this was not going to happen.

The concept of speedbump to a Warsaw Pact attack was discussed in depth.

There were also a lot discussions on how long we tripwires were supposed to actually survive. And whether we might expect to also survive the resultant nuclear war.

I was also extremely happy to find out that the Soviet Union had dissolved without involving an external war. I have always put that down to many in the Soviet Leadership remembering WW2.

I used to, and they’d drop them off at the end of the day, then they asked me why I didn’t use the pick up service - no charge - now I can even just leave the house in the morning and Chris will open the door and get the dogs if we’re not home (we keep a key in a safe place under the little “Welcome bear” by the door)…

There are at least three different dog services in the Half Moon Bay area that have big Sprinter vans that pick up dogs. One of the many things I like about where I live…people love their dogs and they keep them entertained.

That, they estimated, would slow them enough for REFORGER forces to start getting their prepositioned equipment and hopefully stop them at the Rhine w/out nukes.

OTOH, our joke was that the KM road signs between villages was the number of Russian nukes in KT to take out both villages.

Yes, we had those ‘happy’ Chemical-Biological Warfare training classes too. With talking points on how to determine if an area was chemical free. (Hint - have most junior member of the unit unmask for a minute.)

It was even more unsettling when I realized that the ‘magical mystical’ decontamination wash for ones’ vehicles that they always talked about was actually (tropical) bleach.

I always wondered, though, if the Soviets actually thought that nuking or gassing an area just before they drove through it en masse was such a great idea.

This was also true. And obviously, I don’t know of anyone who wanted that kind of disaster to occur.

That said, there was not always a lot of sympathy for Germany as a nation (as opposed to Germans as fellow humans) at the time. There were still a lot of Americans who remembered why the US and Russia were in Germany in the first place and had participated in it.

I knew a guy who had been in an Armored Cavalry unit that patrolled along the Czech border back in the early1960s. (In a quarter-ton aka jeep). He had a bunch of good stories.

Like all the times they got lost and accidentally ended up in Czechoslovakia. And the times their opposite numbers did the same. (The border was not fully marked at the time.)

The usual response was to pretend not to see it until after the lost folks managed to get back safely to their side of the border.

He also talked about how some of the guys used to toss packages of stuff, like a box of Hershey bars, over to the guards on the other side of the border. It worked out well until some US joker replaced all the chocolate bars in their wrappers with Ex-Lax. That kind of ratcheted up tension for a while.

His unit was also deployed to Southern Florida during the Cuban Missile crisis and he had some good stories about that as well.

Timothy Snyder just came out with another of his short videos, this one on the concept of ‘Truth’.

In it he discusses authoritarians efforts to destroy the concept of knowable truth. He describes it as both authoritarian and post-modern. That the truth is unknowable and there are only opinions.

This then encourages people to attach themselves to the ‘Leader’ and accept only what he says as the ‘truth’.

He then discusses the concept of the ‘Great Lie’ and how it often leads to explanation through conspiracy theories. Because there is no rational way to explain it otherwise.

Finally, he points out that use of the Great Lie usually ends up with violence because that is the only way to defend the Great Lie.

This is one reason why we are currently seeing both conspiracy theories and violence associated with the Trump big lie of the stolen election. And how it is bleeding into other vaccine and school big lies as well.

Star GOP congressional candidate accused of abusing 14-year-old girl

On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that De La Cruz, who’s running in the 15th Congressional District, is accused by her estranged husband of “cruel and aggressive conduct” toward his 14-year-old daughter.

De La Cruz is going through a divorce from her husband, Johnny Hernandez.

“Hernandez, who has been married to De La Cruz since 2015, has accused her of mistreating him and his daughter in documents filed in the Hidalgo County district court,” the Post reports. “In one incident described in the petition for divorce, Hernandez says that on a recent Sunday at church, his daughter began crying after some coffee was spilled. He alleges that De La Cruz took her to the bathroom and pinched her to stop her from crying, rather than try to console her.”

When Puff Daddy promoted a Heavy D show at NYCC in 1991 and they had a stampede that killed 9 people, the judge in the civil suit (no jury I guess?) assigned liability half to the venue, and half to Puffy and Heavy.

By the time the verdict came down (1998), Puff had a lot more money than he’d had in 91; he was able to pay his half. City College, due to a 1976 bailout when the city almost went bankrupt, is now actually owned by the State, so that’s where their half the award came from.

I remember taking my kids to the Cincinnati Zoo once and seeing a group of teenagers dressed similarly. They could have been Mennonites, but I don’t think so. Anyway, the PA system started playing Michael Jackson’s “Bad” and a couple of guys started to bust a few MJ moves right near the primates’ area.

I want to see this from a reliable source outside of Twitter. If that actually happened, then some people are looking at serious jail time. Deactivating Pence’s access is akin to an attempted assault on his life. Yeah, he’s an asshole. But he was still VP of the USA on 1/6…

I seem to recall that tfg refused to allow Pence’s chief of staff entry into the White House while all this was going down.

The Chrome extension I’ve been developing has a much better solution; instead of submitting it right away, you get a preview window that has an option to read it aloud with speech synthesis, and a timer that auto-submits after an interval you can set, or you can exit and go back to the editor if it needs to be fixed. The speech option really helps catch errors.

Because it does. My impression is that the Dinesh movie pointed out all praise was due to Republicans for their freeing slaves 150 years ago and that the parties are exactly the same today as back then. That is the meme that the GOP continues to promote today. The Dems were the bad guys (and yes, many Dems were — they were the original party of the South) and until the great realignment started in the 1960’s, they remained so. And nothing has changed.

re: #45 ckkatz

The table-top war game exercises carried out on the NATO side about a war in Europe in the 1970s devolved into first use of tactical nukes on staging areas and transport hubs deep in Warsaw Pact countries by day three of the “Orange” forces attacking across the line of demarcation. By day seven both sides would be in a full and frank silo-emptying exchange of strategic nuclear weapons.

The general impression by most Europeans who thought about it was that the US government would burn Europe into cinders to gain time to talk the Kremlin down from going strategic before day seven rolled around.

California officer dies after missing vaccination deadline (Sacramento Bee)

A police officer who was placed on leave for missing the city of San Francisco’s deadline to be inoculated has died after being stricken by COVID-19, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Officer Jack Nyce, 46, tested positive on Nov. 2 and died Saturday at a hospital in Manteca, his wife, Melissa Nyce, told the newspaper Monday.

The Chronicle said Melissa Nyce declined to say whether her husband was vaccinated but the vice president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, Lt. Tracy McCray, said Jack Nyce was on a 30-day stint of paid administrative leave because he had not received the vaccination required by the city.

Further down in the article, they actually reported the denominator.

The San Francisco Police Department said last week that as many as 70 sworn and civilian workers had been placed on leave for not meeting a Nov. 1 vaccination deadline. A press release said that as of Nov. 2, 97.5% of department employees were fully vaccinated.

Too contrarian to vaccinate, even when his employer required it, and now his widow has to live with this, all because he couldn’t do the right thing. I wonder if she fought with him to try to get him to vaccinate and not fuck up his job.

Well, North Dakota State Representative Jeff Hoverson (R), who is now sick with Covid-19 and was planning an anti-vax and anti-mandate rally, was kicked out of an airport two weeks ago by TSA.

He threw a temper tantrum when TSA wanted to pat him down prior to a flight for his wedding anniversary.

He is also the sponsor of North Dakota’s copycat anti-abortion legislation from Texas. He’s all about personal freedom though.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota lawmaker was barred from boarding a flight at Minot International Airport this week after a run-in with a security agent during a pat down.

Republican Rep. Jeff Hoverson says he and his wife were planning to travel Monday for their anniversary. Hoverson says a Transportation Security Administration agent said he was going to give him a pat down but did not ask permission.

Hoverson said he moved the agent’s hand away.

TSA said in a statement the pat down was initiated when Hoverson set off the alarm in the screening machine. The agency said Hoverson objected during the pat down and called the police, Hoeverson eventually complied, but the airline made the decision to deny boarding, TSA said.

Hoverson said everyone overreacted, including himself.

Yeah, I’m still on a Mac Pro with El Capitan myself. I’ve been seriously considering getting an M1 Mini, they’re amazingly inexpensive on ebay now. But I need to find a reliable way to use it with my two 30” cinema displays, because replacing those would be expensive.

The Dixiecrats are Republicans now.

Interesting way of looking at it. The former Dixiecrats either repented or migrated to the GOP, but the migration was facilitated by the GOP itself welcoming them and assuring them that their ideology would have a home in the old GOP. Of course, the Democrats had compromised for years to keep the Dixiecrats happy, including designing legislation to exclude African Americans.

Hmmmm 300K/my annual salary = just about 4 and a fraction years…which is probably just a drop in the bucket for those folks.

How long will it take them to recoup from those fines? Maybe 2 weeks or possibly 3…

Their fines are worth more than my house (even with the new furnace).

Speaking of the furnace, we received a card in the mail today from the company which installed it thanking us for our business and hoping we found their work acceptable.

The card was hand-signed by all the employees of the company.

Better late than never. Remember the Texas teen who hit six bicyclists? Apparently he’s facing felony charges: washingtonpost.com

A 16-year-old Texas boy is charged with multiple felony counts after he allegedly hit a group of six bicyclists with his pickup truck while trying to blow exhaust on them, authorities announced Monday.

The Waller County district attorney’s office said in a statement that a teenager who drove his vehicle into bicyclists training for a triathlon, hitting all six riders and sending four to the hospital, has been charged with six counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — one charge for each cyclist hit on Sept. 25.

My wife is one of the strongest people I know but she cannot open pickle jars. Or maybe she is just stroking my ego? 🧐 She’s been a statewide triathlon champion, a world champion in disc golf, an exercise physiologist and trainer, and in retirement at 63 she teaches an online zoom class twice a week - strength training with dumbbells. Very heavy dumbbells!

She teaches the classes upstairs. I can hear the weights hitting the floor, kaboom, kaboom, bumpity-bump. She swears that she does NOT drop them, ever 🙄
