If the jury acquits, there is no appeal for the prosecution. That’s the end of the case.

Okay. Thanks

Double jeopardy.

There was one infamous case in Illinois which allowed a second trial but the circumstances were unusual: case of a mob hit where original trial was a bench trial, i.e. no jury, just a judge. The judge ruled in favor of the defendant Harry Aleman but it was later discovered that the judge had been paid off by the mob, the acquittal was voided, and the judge committed suicide when his corrupt behavior was revealed.

You too can learn a little CRT:

Efforts to establish the science of social statistics preoccupied itself with developing methods to situate race variables as causes of social inequality. Yet, efforts to affirm the role of racism as a sociopolitical condition effectively dethroned social statistics as the superordinate describe racial/ethnic processes. As a result, students of statistics are often blind to how best to examine systemic racism; and, consequently, students of racism, race, and ethnicity are often disenchanted with statistics. This workshop will introduce methodological tools to improve the capacities of quantitative data to identify racial and ethnic inequities. Special attention is paid to assessments of the sociopolitical conditions that prescribe systemic racism as a social fact.

It’s all well and good for Biden to meet with corporate leaders.

But the (alleged) decline in Biden’s approval rating can only be reversed by continual public speaking.

I suspect many Americans have no idea what Biden does, so they just accept what the propaganda houses are selling.

Familiarity with a name is central to branding. All the soft drink companies learned that a century ago.

I would love to see Biden make public speeches 5 times a week. One of them can be on TV. One should be a podcast that is copied on Twitch, Tik Tok, etc.

Talk about anything. Just be out there and talk. Make your presence known.

This is why Trump has so many followers. He learned long ago that to be a successful carney one has to be on the circuit.

I do not.

It was among the more brilliant things that FDR did.

He knew that he had to market his agenda every week, not every 4 years.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) told the Arizona Republic that “bickering among each other” was the cause of Democrats not doing well during the off-year elections.

Said Sinema: “They just want you to work together and get stuff done… Voters are looking for people who just want to solve problems and get things done and are talking about how to do it in a very practical and pragmatic way that is within the circle of what’s normal.”

And she dismissed a question about a potential primary challenge: “I’m not thinking about 2024. What I am thinking about is the work that I’m doing for Arizona right now.”

…Says the Senator who won’t work together with others to get stuff done

And speaking of Palin (which makes me want to puke) let us not forget that she was an early and enthusiastic supporter of the dentist who is an expert at reading body language among other things, Gosar, and that the dentist hired two Palin’ cronies as his chief of staff and legislative director, who were nothing but trouble from the beginning:

From 2011:
“Gosar has serious congressional staff issues,” said one Arizona Republican familiar with the operation. “It’s a total cluster.”

The emails, written by former staffers while they were still on the payroll, implicate chief of staff Rob Robinson and legislative director Tom Van Flein as the heart of the problem.

Gosar’s decision to hire the pair after he was elected raised eyebrows from the beginning — both men had no prior congressional experience and both had close ties to Sarah Palin, who boosted Gosar’s campaign with an endorsement.
politico.com

Van Flein (who was Palin’s attorney back when) is his current chief of staff.

I’ve posted Armored Dildo pictures from my backyard here in days past. I have seen broods of two and three, but never a full set of four. I do not doubt that four is the normal number (*which is too many, and five is right out), but I suspect that in an urban setting that infant mortality may be a pretty big %.

In any case, cute little buggers.

Can’t the prosecution appeal based on the Judge’s obvious bias? I mean, come on now!

You can argue that the judges order to not allow that to be brought in as evidence was wrong and biased, but that doesn’t make it ok for a prosecutor to just go ahead and say it in court anyway in defiance of that ruling.

The judge is an asshole, but he has every right to be pissed about this, and the prosecutor should know better. In any other context but “Entitled Racist Teenage Domestic Terrorist” trial, we would be applauding him.

Everywhere else, tomorrow is Remembrance Day, the end of WW1. As a veteran, I get real tired, real fast, of having November 11 being highjacked to slobber over Vets when everyone in Europe is acknowledging the death of 1/3 of a generation, another 1/3 of a generation who were wounded, and the other lucky 1/3 who weren’t wounded but often suffered grueling psych wounds.

I went to the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle on my first trip there in 2007. I walked in, looked at the dead- the sheer fucking *number* of dead recorded on the walls, Unit by Unit. and sat down and cried my eyes out for half an hour. Docents came up to me and asked if I was OK. I just shook my head and said “I had no idea what this small country sacrificed.”

I was absolutely bereft.

That’s a big part of why Americans are so gung-ho about war, compared to just everybody else in the world. We’re so unrealistic about what it entails.

We’ve had no air raids, no occupation, no realistic fear of invasion. Our experience of war is that our soldiers go someplace really far away, the rest of us look at pictures or read about it, and then when it’s over 97% of our troops come home alive.

The only physical damage or civilian deaths this country has every experienced from a war is Pearl Harbor and 9/11 — two half-days, 60 years apart, after each of which we could get to the clean-up and revenge part of the program.
