It’s old news in Kentucky how this works. The Commonwealth was divvied up into regions and contractors informally agreed to not compete for bids outside their own regions.

Check Out Copenhill, the Snow-Free Ski Hill and Climbing Wall Atop a Copenhagen Power Plant
thisiscolossal.com

A year since its opening, the snow-free ski hill and entertainment hub that sits above a waste-to-energy power plant in Copenhagen is fully open to outdoor enthusiasts. New aerial photographs from Hufton+Crow capture the rooftop complex Copenhill (previously) through a blanket of fog, revealing the now lush landscaping that lines hiking trails and visitors as they peer out over the surrounding water. The multi-use site, which is located at the Amager Resource Centre, even has the world’s tallest climbing wall, an 80-meter-high rock structure that scales the entirety of the building.

Copenhill is the project of Danish architectural firm BIG and is the highest outlook in the capital city. The new complex also boasts multi-faceted energy reuse, with the indoor plant converting waste into heat for residents’ homes, while the biodiverse hill outside absorbs heat, filters the air, and minimizes water runoff.

The climbing wall? I don’t even want to look at it! Otherwise, this is awesome.

As Schroeder and attorneys from both sides debated the wording of jury instructions on Monday the defense renewed its request to dismiss the possession charge. Assistant District Attorney James Kraus argued that reading the statute to allow minors to carry any weapon except a short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun basically negates the prohibition on minors carrying weapons.

“I believe that this … essentially swallows the entire statute,” Kraus said.

But this time Schroeder dismissed the charge after Kraus acknowledged that Rittenhouse’s rifle wasn’t a short-barreled. The judge noted that prosecutors filed a “very nice brief” laying out their arguments but that it should have been clear he had a “big problem” with the prohibition statute.

He said prosecutors could have asked a state appeals court to rule on whether the charge was valid “all along.” Then he caught himself, noting that he never issued a ruling against the prosecution that might have triggered such a request until just then with closing arguments minutes away.

“I think it ought to have been mighty clear that I had big problems with this statute,” Schroeder said. “I made no bones about that from the beginning. And there always was access to the court of appeals all along here. Well, I guess that’s not fair for me to say because I was sitting on it. So shame on me.”

I got no words that are polite.

Forty years ago, upon the tenth anniversary of the debut of “Sesame Street,” the New York Times offered an appraisal of the revolutionary children’s television program, reminding readers that the show with universal appeal initially declared its target audience, “the four-year old inner-city black youngster.” This year, as the show commemorates its 50th anniversary and is broadcast in more than 150 countries, it’s worthwhile to take a look back at how since its inception, “Sesame Street” has been rooted in African-American culture, more specifically the historically black community of Harlem. The New York City neighborhood played such an outsized role in the development of the program—from set design to casting and marketing—the answer to the question from the “Sesame Street” opening song, “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street,” ought to be Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train.”

The bias from the judge is crystal clear. Once again white guy that shot someone in the freaking back gets off easy. Probably.

Only because I taught this stuff for years do I know of these things. I paid attorneys and police to come lecture at my classes.

Proper self-defense means the trouble came to you. When you prepare for violence, travel to the location of violence you are a combatant, not a defender. It also does not include stepping out as a minor in illegal possession of a gun to go defend someone else’s property uninvited.

Edit-The possession has been ruled legal. I think it’s nuts.

re: #9 A Mom Anon

I wonder if it’s possible or if anyone has figured out the numbers on this for companies like Walmart and Amazon or most other large retailers. And then look at companies like Costco who actually raised their starting salary to 17 dollars an hour. I have a feeling it would just be a lot less expensive to just be a decent employer. You don’t have huge turnover, retraining or burned out employees, don’t have to deal with lawsuits and paying even larger groups of attorneys than you already have to as a company. I have to wonder about the same logic applied to what they do to fight taxes, labor laws and fair wages.

I hate lobbyists, that whole system is a huge part of why we’re here. And yet it’s rarely addressed, reported on and nothing is done about it.

You might find some items of interest in the Bloomberg article linked in the tweet. It’s another example of treating employees well (even if it was unions that forced that on you) reduces business risks.

It came out that Rittenhouse’s gun was legal, under an insane Wisconsin law that allows kids as young as 12 to carry semi-auto weapons.

Hunting laws allowed Kyle Rittenhouse to carry weapon during fatal shootings in Wisconsin, lawyers say

Attorneys for Kyle Rittenhouse, who is charged with fatally shooting two people during a protest in Wisconsin last year, argued that hunting laws allowed him to carry the assault-style weapon used during the shootings.

Wisconsin law prohibits anyone under age 18 from being armed, but Rittenhouse’s attorneys argued that state laws only forbid minors to carry short-barreled rifles and shotguns. The other prohibitions pertaining to children fall under hunting laws, which say children under age 12 can’t hunt with guns, Rittenhouse’s attorneys said at a hearing Tuesday.

Kill the Election Assistance Commission?

2014:

“…The EAC’s reality, however, is marked by leadership vacuums and little sense of purpose.

It’s endowed with almost no regulatory powers. All four commissioner positions and have been vacant since 2011, and it hasn’t conducted a public meeting since then. It hasn’t had a quorum of three commissioners — what’s needed for the EAC to conduct votes, write policy and issue advisory opinions — since 2010. The commission has no permanent executive director or general counsel. It used to distribute grants to states so they may better administer elections. But today, lacking leaders, the EAC no longer make grants.”

you would have been watching syndicated jonny quest at that point, because the assholes who ran the networks decided that kids could only handle “let’s pretend” scary stuff, so the monsters were all various carnival barkers trying to run various grifts in various towns. Admittedly, Jonny Quest was racist as hell, but it was also way better than what followed. (Except for that episode where the dog is swimming around with everyone else in scuba gear. Ummm, not all that sarcastic: from Wikipedia:

Roger T. “Race” Bannon is the special agent from Intelligence One assigned to safeguard Jonny “24 hours a day and 7 days a week as tutor, companion and all-around watchdog”.[13] Race was born in Wilmette, Illinois, to John and Sarah Bannon.[14] He is an expert in judo, having a third-degree black belt as well as the ability to defeat notorious experts in various sporting techniques, including sumo wrestlers. He is also a pilot. The character was voiced by Mike Road, with his design modeled on actor Jeff Chandler.[15] The name is a combination of Race Dunhill and Stretch Bannon from an earlier comic strip.[4] The surname Bannon is Irish (from ‘O’Banain’) meaning “white”.[16][17]

Former President Donald Trump endorsed a Republican challenger to Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI), who was one of the 10 House of Representatives Republicans to vote to impeach Trump earlier this year, Reuters reports.

And

The Wyoming Republican Party will no longer recognize Liz Cheney as a member of the GOP in its second formal rebuke for her criticism of former President Donald Trump,” the AP reports.

re: #167 danarchy

While I get the sentiment, there is a hierarchy to essential. I lived without internet for almost half my life, pretty sure I would only manage a few days without water.

You can boil your own water and use firewood that you go cut down yourself. And then, when you get sick, you can burn some leaves hoping it will cure you.

No, you don’t need water from a properly functioning system, and you don’t need electricity since the human race did without it for all except the last hundred years. And you don’t need antibiotics, vaccines, packaged food, clothes, or a house. But, since we live in a world where those things go are available, it is really nice being able to look up how to solve the math problem your kid is struggling with, how to fix the faucet that is leaking, or apply online for that job you wouldn’t even know about otherwise.

Sometimes, your contrarianism is really short sighted.

Charles,

Do you think Joe might reconsider his decision to leave if he knew that teleskiguy has been banned from the site? I am unhappy that they both left since previously they each contributed valuable ideas and information, but it was teleskiguy who went off the edge.

I haven’t emailed this info to him, but the main reason he left isn’t just ski - he felt there were others who agreed. This is the core reason he felt unwelcome, I think, and I have to respect that. If he heard from other LGF members who want him to reconsider, maybe it would change his mind. Or maybe not.

With respect to everyone who wants to chase after Joe and beg him to come back, Joe does not strike me as the kind of person to “get over” things, especially when he feels that he has been wronged or betrayed.

No one asked me, but if one were to do so, I would counsel giving him his space to deal with his feelings in his way.

I dislike talking about other members for just this reason. If I left, and found out everyone wanted me back just because, after I had been alienated, I would’ve felt even more so. (It’s like how I feel about the city I live in, but that’s for another thread.)

I have been online for longer than some of you, and have experienced many of the same emotions in various other settings online. I usually leave quietly, based on long experience.

I have no enemies, and no one I dislike, here, so I’m not likely to flounce. But I always think about it, no matter where I post, and I, and we, must accept that nothing is permanent. (Yahoo killed the disability list I used to run. Then my moderator died of pancreatic cancer.)

I like and respect Charles. If I left, I would still follow him on Twitter.

I probably should’ve appended my comment to one of the other posts in the thread, or just posted as a separate comment instead of piggybacking one in a reply. I’m tired and everything’s beginning to run together, now. Sorry.
