I have already made plans to leave the country for good if anything like Jan 6 happens again in 2024-25. As far as I’m concerned, the country is already finished.

That feeling when you realize that your codebase uses a database abstraction layer from PHP’s now-antiquated PEAR libraries, and it’s not compatible with PHP 8, the version on the new server you asked for.

I foresee a lot of busywork in my immediate future, converting all the MDB2 code to PDO. It’s just SQL, right? Should be pretty simple? cough

A lot of right wing wackos are operating under an agenda that instigates a violent armed movement against Democratic politicians and liberals in general. They imagine blood running in the streets and lines of armed Oathkeepers and other III%’er nutjobs just mowing down lefties. They don’t seem to pause and think that this agenda will directly result in casualties within their own families and friends.

Or maybe they do. Which makes them all the more evil.

By the way, I haven’t commented on the contretemps this weekend.

I’ve decided to keep my head down when these things happen. I lurked on this site for quite awhile before a registration window opened up for me.

When I registered and first started posting, the Israeli “Transfer!” forces were getting weaned because Charles realized they were cheek to jowl with some of the worst racists in Europe.

It was also during the whole “Saint Pancake” crap after an American citizen, protesting the destruction of Palestinian homes because a cousin of one the owners was a terrorist, stood in front of an armored D-9 Caterpillar bulldozer and got squashed into a thin layer of blood, guts, eyeballs, and teeth.

Oh how the Lizards at the time laughed! So funny.

I disagreed. I had a negative Karma for the first few months I was posting here.

So just a few suggestions to Lizards here today:

Be nice.

Read Stonekettle’s pinned tweet and remember that this is not Your Site. This Is Charles’ Site. You don’t get the liberty to make broad brush posts slamming people you are mad at because you can refer anyone who you upset to your pinned tweet like Stonekettle can. THIS IS NOT your website, it’s Charles’. You do not have a pinned NOT ALL tweet here that excuses your broad brush posts. They open up Charles to attacks by trolls and longstanding flamers. It’s not fair to Charles or the rest of us to put up with your ad hoc, completely subjective screeds. Do you need to post it, or are you just yelling?

In most cases, it’s the same thing. So, again, be nice.

Just suggestions. If you need to tell me to Fuck Off and Die, so be it. I’ve endured worse.

But again, this used to be a Wingnut Palace. There is absolutely no reason for it to become a Moonbat echo chamber. Think before you post, and respect your fellow Lizards.

Re: Jonny Quest

Turns out the whole 1964-65 series is available on Amazon Prime. You have to join their Boomerang Channel to get it but it’s only 4.95/month and has a free trial. It seems to have a lot of other old time cartoons, including Looney Tunes with Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and other revered American icons.
This is interesting because I have not seen the original Jonny Quest series since it was first broadcast in the 60s. We saw it in black and white then. It was produced, and broadcast, in color but we did not have color TV until about 1968.

Moebius Model Kits has a kit of the Quest family’s futuristic private jet, the Dragonfly. It is apparently a fairly popular item, often found with Moebius’s similar PanAm Space Clipper kit from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I’ve had the DVD set since its release in 2004. I’m tempted to pull it out and give it a rewatch.

I think the vertical fin on that Supersonic Plane and the parasite drag it induced to the airframe would rip it to pieces.

Why? Because nothing like it was ever built. Parasite drag was the killer of fuel efficient supersonic flight.

Take a look at the F-102 vs the F-106. The magic words are “area rule design”.

Oh! And look! For those interested, this post is informative, gives those folks a real lead to the go-to of the aerodynamic theory involved, and you get a real-world solution to a real military problem. Also, it doesn’t offend anyone because it isn’t subjective.

I’ll go to sleep now.

Chris Christie was on ABC yesterday. He was on CNN and MSNBC tonight. The New York Times just did a big interview with him. And why?

Christie is intelligent, knowledgeable about policy and government, experienced, and articulate; he is also ruthless, without ethics, and a coward. In addition, he is very ambitious with a hope that the Presidency is within his grasp, if only he could move Trump out of the way.

The entire modern GOP consists of two types of members:
>> those who favor the insurrection and ongoing coup; and
>> those who acknowledge Biden’s victory and publicly oppose all that Trump orchestrated following his loss but still favor the state level legislation that will ultimately attain the same goals.

Remember: not a single GOP member of the House voted for any voting rights legislation and only one GOP Senator (Murkowski) voted against the filibuster of this legislation.

Meanwhile, the goddamn mainstream media persists in its deliberate ignorance of the 800lb gorilla in US political reporting — the GOP is presently in the process of entrenching its power whenever and however it can, laws and the electorate be damned. Instead of clear-eyed reporting on the GOP as an entity that is fundamentally hostile to liberal democracy, we get an endless succession of fucking Cletus safaris.

The 1/6 coup was literally the tip of this iceberg, and unless the other 90% is yanked out into public view real soon by law enforcement, there’s a real chance that all these criminals will definitively get away with their crimes, politically.

Personally this is why I’m so distressed at the apparent lack of urgency by DOJ. Three weeks to indict Bannon, and no incarceration? Pathetic. Meanwhile the other Trump investigations seem on track to produce results some time shortly after the heat death of the universe.

The legacy media’s nuzzling Christie’s taint right now because he’s probably their best hope (right now) of finding a Trump-lite: All the bullshit, half the baggage. Their previous Great White Hope was DeathSantis, but the pressure to maintain support from the MAGAt voters in the hopes of winning reelection is forcing him to continue to carry water for Cheetolini. This by the media is asinine. If Trump is alive, he is the GOP candidate in 2024. If Trump is dead, the GOP candidate will be the GOP pig-person who most thoroughly captures Trump’s magic as True Voice of the Pig-People.

Either way, Christie and those like him stand no chance, no matter how much plotting they do with their media and dark money backers.

That’s what has the party’s money men scared shitless, that they might have a repeat of Obama’s first term, falling way short of their hopes in the midterms and then failing to win back the WH. Yeah, they won in VA, but the win here and the loss in NJ were narrow and that doesn’t give a clear direction forward for next year. Meanwhile, there’s an unofficial “Trump primary” currently running where he’s running around and endorsing candidates, further complicating the party’s message going into next year.

I find that I can bear the misfortunes of the GOP donor class with great fortitude. The only problem with that hostile indifference is that the GOP crashing and burning may ruin the country if the media and the electorate can’t find the good sense to stop voting R as Republicans become ever more deranged.

It’s a bit like how the nobles “put up” with Hitler as chancellor. The reality was that the Nazi Party held such a large portion of the Bundstag that he was exerting power over the government even without holding an elected office. And the worry was if they did not do something to recognize that power, then he could end up destabilizing the house of cards or even pushing the country into a civil war.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Nov 16, 2021 • 4:42:26am

Real estate market here in San Diego has gone wonkers.

There are just too few residences up for sale.

And the high end of the market is wild. I presume it is being driven up by rich speculators.

Even in exclusive Ranch Santa Fe, where just three years ago houses in the $2.5M to $3.5M were aplenty, now the asks are $8-$10M and up.

And those are not the top end.

I’m calling this the Great 21st Century Land Rush: desirable properties being bid up by the ultra wealthy, probably for speculation, and dragging up the rest of the market.

While San Diego may an extreme case, I think you’ll discover that in all the major urban areas something similar is happening.

Quite a few wealthy people in America are buying into wealthy enclaves in anticipation of civil unrest or an elevation of crime-related violence in society….in other words Dystopia. Real estate nationwide is indeed bonkers but the richest areas are appreciating fastest.

Lower income units are being bought up as income properties by the wealthy to rent to the proletariat,. This is contributing even more to the problem as the inventory of available houses shrinks even more.

I know personally of one Trumpy older couple that is selling their brand new $2 Million house here in Florida to move 2 miles away into a walled compound of wealthy houses.

Many of the more desirable places in San Diego county do have gated communities. But there are also a lot of very expensive properties that are not behind gates.

I think the problem really is one of anticipation not so much of civil war but of financial collapse.

Real estate carries the adjective “real” for a reason.

The masses are going to find out that they can’t afford to live anywhere but out in the boonies.

INFRINGEMENT CLAIMS
If you are aware or suspect any persons infringing on the intellectual property of Marvel, please contact infringements@marvel.com and describe the suspected infringement. Please be as detailed as possible so that the claim can be investigated properly. Please also provide as much information as possible on the suspected infringer (ex. name, address, website, e-mail, phone number).

Such examples of intellectual property infringement are:

Unlicensed merchandise using Marvel’s characters or names
Unapproved commercial use of Marvel characters or trademarks
Counterfeit products
Illegal copies of Marvel material being sold or distributed.

The problem is, that image might not be infringement. It’s not merchandise or commercial; in fact, the argument could be made for it to be fair use, as a fan art work. Copyright law in the US is so fucked up that it’s entirely plausible, and in fact somewhat likely, that this image is completely legal - but it would cost Marvel a lot of money to find that out, and they’d probably rather sweep it under the rug.

The judge said that only weapons under a certain length applied to the statute, made some vague noises about the law being a terribly written law, and tossed the charge. It happened at the last minute because, apparently, criminal law generally doesn’t have the concept of a “motion to dismiss” like we see all the time in civil law.

True. However, sometimes it’s not about the letter of the law. “Never screw with The Mouse” is how locals say don’t mess with Disney characters. Their lawyers seemingly always win. In any case, it’s in Marvel’s hands to act or ignore.

Pains me to say this, but it’s a derivative work making a statement.

A massively offensive statement, since the guys who created Capt. America would adamantly be 9238% opposed to what Kyle Rittenhouse has done and represents.

But unfortunately, this is one of those “The 1st Amendment protects unpopular speech” cases.

You ban this, you have to ban the Rockwell parody that followed it up.

Drown someone in paperwork until the creator of the parody art withdraws the piece from public.

If memory serves, Mattel came down like a ton of bricks on an artist who created derivative works using actual Barbies, or something similar.

Totally legal for the artist and absolutely covered by the 1st Amendment, but they didn’t have the legal and financial firepower to fight Mattel.

He was “hunting.” If so, it is an admission of intent to kill, and invalidates self-defense.

We have to face the fact that we are dealing with honest-to-god fascist murderers and will eventually have to take appropriate measures. Shaming them has no effect, argument has no effect (since they know they are lying and actually take pride in it). You cannot call them bullies, since they think a bully is a good thing to be.
I think we are all beginning to understand what it will take. It speaks well of us; the rational, progressive majority; that we recoil from it. That will not change the facts, or the hard realities of self preservation.

sadly for me, i’m learning portuguese, but it’s the brazilian variant, which means I don’t have any good place to flee. I’ve wanted to learn the language so I could go to Lisbon, but sadly nobody likes to offer a full-throated language-learning program for continental portuguese. It’s always Brazilian. The continental programs are always like 30 lessons, which kind of sucks.

The Russian satellite was approximately 450 kilometers up. The ISS is well within range of the debris cloud.

The ISS astronauts, including three (I think) Russians, had to take shelter in the escape pods because of the risk.

The whole thing seems to be a clusterfuck. It appears that the Russian space agency didn’t know what was going on at all, and then this morning Lavrov the foreign minister denied that Russia had anything to do with any so-called anti-satellite weapon and how dare you accuse us of this, about fifteen minutes before the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a, you guessed it, successful anti-satellite missile test.

Apparently the Chinese space station is at risk, too, which is probably not what Russia wants right now.

A Mom Anon  Nov 16, 2021 • 9:01:53am

I keep going back to after 9/11 when news coverage of OBL and his “philosophy” were being discussed. One thing I remember well is his belief that the 9/11 attacks would divide this country so deeply there would be no need to further attack from the outside because we would do a great job of hating each other and destroying the country from within. And god damn it we did a great job with a lot of help from republicans. I can remember almost exactly when I saw the shift here locally and it wasn’t subtle. About 3 weeks after that awful fucking day the bullshit about liberals being supporters of terrorism(because we didn’t begin just publicly executing Muslim people in the streets, even if they only “looked Muslim”. It escalated from there. And IMHO, that’s where we could have salvaged something and put a stop to it, but the fear in the American public had already taken a firm hold and we had/have a news media that fed that fear.

Families are broken and not fixable. Friendships, even lifelong ones, are irretrievably broken. We are fighting each other about affordable healthcare, housing, education and living wages, there are actual working class people who don’t want these things for anyone, not even themselves because it wasn’t “worked for”.

Since 9/11 I have lost my parents and siblings to hatred of liberals and judgement for not being extra special Jesus-y enough. It was a slow process, but it worked. All my IRL friends are now mean and hateful right wing jerks that hate damned near everyone and refuse to vax or wear masks. Imagine hating on your own daughter so much you won’t include her or her family(including their only grandson)in your plans for holidays or vacations. Instead they spend all that time with a cousin and her husband, who have no kids and who in turn ignore my widowed aunt. Over god and right wing politics. We never hurt these people, in fact, my husband has done countless home repairs for them over the years and never once asked for a dime because it’s family. Only to be discarded like trash for not being good enough.

Multiply that by a few million and I would bet my tiny piggy bank that my story isn’t even close to unique and a lot more common than we realize. Where are all the fucking media interviews of people like us?

My point? We can’t fix what’s broken if this continues. There are too many of us who are either consumed with a need to hate and many others who are just broken hearted, which leads to another kind of anger that smolders and hurts and never goes away. I mean, I’ve been dealing with birth family rejection my entire life, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.

I just do not see how we can heal without confronting this and trying to somehow create our own supportive family, by birth or not. The holidays and all the stupid pressure to have some perfect family gatherings does not help at ALL. There’s going to be a lot of hurting people out there, this time of year amplifies this for many of us. I just don’t know what to do or where to go anymore. It’s going to be tough to sort out, for me at least. Thanks for listening/reading.

I still think it means he’s gonna walk and the Judge was making sure it was all-or-nothing for the Jury and already has enough intelligence (in the sense of information, not smarts) that the Jury will not convict on the more serious charges.

This is all a lot of sick-ass performance theater.

Are the two variants of Portuguese that different that you would have difficulty communicating?

Not that I know jack about the language, but I thought it was more an issue of “accent” (and the inevitable colloquialisms) - rather like, say, American vs. British vs. Australian English.

mutually intelligible, I’m sure, but very much fear the continentals would think I sounded like a redneck. “I was taken aback by how fondly Trump remembers a day [January 6] I will always remember as one of the darkest I have ever witnessed,” [Karl] writes, adding that Trump seemed to justify the death threats made against his own vice president. “It boggled my mind,” Karl says.

It did? The author’s expressions of surprise are so frequent and over-the-top that they are perhaps the most surprising parts of this book. “Betrayal” is less insightful about the Trump White House and more revealing of Karl’s own gradual, extremely belated awareness that something in the White House might in fact be awry.

It probably speaks to Karl’s decency as a person that he didn’t want to contemplate anything so terrible, but for all the high-minded talk in his books about the journalistic pursuit of accuracy, he gives little indication that he had the imagination to handle the truth.

There is an absolutely infuriating tendency amongst the Beltway press to refuse to recognize just how truly evil the Trumpites are, how they are engaged in a concerted effort to destroy America so they can then get about their real goal of exterminating black, latino, gay, college-educated, etc.

What will it take?

Eight people are dead and just shy of 100 more have become infected with COVID-19 after an outbreak at a Connecticut nursing home.

The outbreak at the Geer Village Senior Community, a nursing home and rehabilitation center in Canaan, started around the beginning of October when the nursing home was reporting three positive COVID-19 cases.

Now, eight residents have died, and 67 residents and 22 staff members caught COVID-19 sometime in the past month and a half. Nursing home officials said 48 residents and 21 staff members have recovered from the virus.
Of the 89 total infections, 87 people were fully vaccinated, the nursing home said.
