After decades of neglect, America’s critical infrastructure will soon see vital upgrades thanks to the bipartisan spending bill signed by President Biden today. Elsewhere in Washington, former White House advisor Steve Bannon promoted his podcast as he surrendered to the FBI after being indicted for contempt of Congress. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

Bannon is one of the creepiest phenomena to come out of American politics in the past decade. He really is amoral and without principles, he is just out to burn things down and laugh at the flames.

Opinion: The Grand Old Party of disarray, by Eugene Robinson

washingtonpost.com

One of our two major political parties is in embarrassing disarray. Hint: It’s not the Democrats.
We are bombarded daily with heavy-lies-the-crown tales of woe about President Biden, Vice President Harris and the razor-thin Democratic majorities in Congress. Meanwhile, the Republican Party somehow evades similar scrutiny and skepticism. The truth is that if you want to see a portrait of factionalism and aimlessness, look closely at the dysfunctional collection of politicians that once could legitimately call itself the Grand Old Party.
Today’s Republicans agree wholeheartedly on one thing: ambition for power. That’s because, at least in Washington, they have so little of it: Under President Donald Trump, the GOP lost the White House and control of both the House and Senate, a rare trifecta not achieved since Herbert Hoover.

Chris Christie fucked up a tiny little town’s traffic, to the point where a heart attack patient died on route to the hospital, as petty revenge.

And now oh-so-liberal CNN is practically jumpstarting his Presidential campaign, because he’s a respectable and not outwardly crazy version of Trump.

For fuck’s sake, even Trevor Noah was rah-rah-ing him.

I keep thinking about Bridgegate and what Christie did to Fort Lee and then imagining him, a guy who basically is Trump with a hint of self-control, being President?

Just think of all the petty bullshit he’d engage him to punish his opposition.

I really, really, thought I was done seeing this asshole in public life ever again, between Trump humiliating him and Bridgegate.

Unfortunately, other than Marc Elias fighting in court, the Democrats won’t do anything because they have to protect their precious Senatorial perogatives such as the filibuster instead of democracy. But we cannot resign to despair; we will have to save democracy ourselves. First, by voting no matter how many obstacles the Republicans erect to block us, and second by refusing to accept it when the Republicans nullify votes and appoint Trump electors in states the Democratic nominee won. They can’t steal the election if we don’t let them. If this is the end of self-government in America, don’t let it end without a fight.

This is true. One of my concerns is that the children of antivax cranks won’t be allowed into public schools once COVID is on the vaccine schedule, so they’ll lose the opportunity to be better educated than their parents, being home schooled or crank-schooled instead.

It wouldn’t be fair to responsible people to allow them to just choose not to vaccinate.

How many kids died from eating Tide Pods before the nation rose up in horror to demand Congress DO SOMETHING! How many kids does it take dying from unsafe cribs and high-chairs before the feds mandate a recall? IIRC, the numbers for each of those examples were in the single digits.

Almost all states have vaccine exemptions for religious and/or philosophical reasons, so most will still be able to attend public school. And, of course, red states will never impose a covid vaccine mandate. In fact, some of them may make it easier to refuse all vaccines in the name of “freedumb,” now that the unholy alliance between anti-vaxxers and the GOP has been forged.

Biden is somewhat constrained in the mandates he can roll out. Even the OSHA requirement, which is pretty much non-controversial from a Constitutional perspective, is already under an injunction. Highly doubt he could tie much funding to a requirement that states issue vaccine mandates.

Also don’t see where he could issue a mask mandate that extended to state and private property.

Insufficient fealty

The Casper Star Tribune’s report on Wyoming Republicans refusing to recognize Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) as a member of their party also notes that Cheney voted with Donald Trump on policy 93% of the time.

“That’s a higher percentage than Rep. Jim Jordan, Rep. Elise Stefanik, Rep. Paul Gosar, Rep. Matt Gaetz and a number of other lawmakers who are seen as staunch Trump allies.”

The GOP would scream bloody murder, of course, because they’re power-hungry, not because they really give a shit about personal freedom.

We have to live with it regardless of what Republicans do. This disease has non-human hosts. Republicans make things worse, but eradicating COVID would be much more difficult than eradicating a human-only disease. We needed to bottle it up early, and failed, so we’re screwed.

It’s about ending our democracy, rather than votes on bills. Everyone who stood up to the crime-President when he attempted his coup has no place in the party.

re: #63 Mike Lamb

That’s my point. The Republican Party and their propaganda networks like Fox News are actively working against measures that would be effective, and pushing OVER AND OVER to re-open things and remove safety requirements way too early, which is inevitably followed by another surge in infections, and the likelihood of more dangerous mutations.

Without this constant cynical manipulation, it wouldn’t be controversial to have mandates with a disease this dangerous. But that’s not the country we live in, unfortunately.

Even in countries that have done a reasonably good job controlling covid like S. Korea, there are thousands of cases per day. There is no amount of vaccine mandates or masking that is going to wipe out covid at this point and there is only so long people are going to stay on a pandemic footing and mask, and distance etc. Certainly there is no stomach to keep it up indefinitely. We need highly effective vaccines available to those who want it yearly or every 6 months or whatever is necessary and hopefully some effective treatments for those who get it anyway.

For example, my parents are over 80 years old. I’ll be visiting them over the Christmas holidays despite the resulting covid risk from my air travel. Even though we’re all vaccinated, the parents have had booster shots and I should have mine by then, it’s a bit of a risk.

But none of us are getting any younger.

Also done intentionally by the Republicans, in order to reduce the power of the labor market as much as possible. I live in fear that our 21 year old refrigerator will die. I have some specific things I want in a new one, including no water/ice dispenser because there is no water line anywhere near the fridge and it would be both stupid to have a nonfunctional dispenser, and it takes up a lot of valuable space. I’d also like a side-by-side and there are about 3 models of decent quality fridges out there that meet my criteria.

Even “regular” brands don’t support appliances after a few years. Random parts are available a bit longer, but then you’re out of luck.
Our Amana fridge has been performing flawlessly for all of its 21 years so I hate to replace it prematurely, but on the other hand, we also have a chest freezer that we don’t use like we used to and it would make sense to get a refrigerator with a larger freezer compartment than what we have now, and just consolidate everything.
Unless there is an untimely appliance death this all just in the “mulling things over” phase.

Their 401k’s went up A LOT; more in the last 1-1/2 years than in the 5 years before that. For empty nesters who’ve watched real estate go up significantly in the same time frame, retirement looks a lot more comfortable than they might have guessed in 2019.

On the other hand, appliances today are way more energy efficient than in the good old days. It’s sort of like the plastic bag issue. If you’re looking at waste in waterways and the ocean, then get rid of them. If you’re talking about energy of production and shipping to where they’re need, then plastic can beat paper, etc. I’m not sure I believe the parts about fabric bags being terrible unless you reuse them hundreds of times, because a good cloth bag lasts for years, so yeah, you reuse them a lot.

But it was a careful review.
Twitter is a monkey house and I may be better off not there.

I’d consider it a win. This will free up some of your time, but seeing nutso Tweets posted here and not being able to taunt the nuts may be frustrating.

I saw earlier some here had their freezer/fridge go out. Huh. Mine kissed off on Friday last week. Freezer. Full. Had to toss around 75 pounds of meats and veggies and frozen treats. There are long waits for some appliances. Lowes here had no idea when they could get what we wanted. Thankfully we found a local chain who has inventory. But they only have one delivery crew who works for 5 or 6 stores and ours will be here the 26th of November. And we got a model that has the bells and whistles we wanted.
And I really didn’t want to give Lowes any of my money.
And Home Depot can piss off.
We almost forgot about the local chain. Happy to give them my money even though the salesman didn’t know jack.

this is why i won’t stock up the freezer or fridge. every time i try it….every fucking time there’s a power outage and suddenly I’m out a couple hundred bucks.

LOL! christie writes in his book that Trump’s election night speech was “one of the most dangerous pieces of political rhetoric” he’d ever heard, and that it made him “physically sick,” but he won’t rule out supporting Trump in 2024. There’s a Republican for ya’!

“The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power.”

tele upgrade continues: it has locking tuners now and a fender 3 saddle bridge and vintage bridge plate. The only problem is I’ve now ordered Glendale compensating saddles, so I could have saved myself 30 bucks or so by just ordering the plate. Still, didn’t know I would get the itch to go compensating. If the intonation had been perfect with the saddles that came with it, I wouldn’t be worrying about the glendales. Still, it’s a 3 saddle arrangement which means intonation is never likely to be perfect anyway (each saddle shares two strings). And I’ve got Seymour Duncan Vintage Broadcaster (bridge), and Vintage tele rhythm (a neck pickup) showing up tomorrow, and I’m gonna try to be brave enough to install them myself. I’m treating the whole guitar like a learning project. I’d like to become a damned good set-up man. Not a master luthier: I don’t have the skill set for that. But somebody who can look at a cheap strat in a pawn shop and think, “Yeah, I could change out all the pots and the pickups, and I could make that something nice.”

I have an Amana (a crap brand) which is 15 years old. I am looking at a 27” Whirlpool or GE which will cost $3500 & has all the features that I want. Yes I use Sabbath Mode!

When I looked for the same oven in 2019 it cost $2400 & $1800 on sale. U snooze u lose.

Florida

She specifically pointed to a state statute that summarizes how a school board is responsible for the content available to all students, and that anything that is pornographic is not suited to their needs.

“Do you feel like it’s fair to make a judgment if you haven’t read the entire book?” asked WESH’s Senait Gebregiorgis.

“I don’t think it matters what the whole story is if those parts are under our state statute obscene,” said Woolbright,

“Everyone is making it seem like my book is what is introducing their children to these heavy topics,” said Johnson. “The world is what is introducing your children to these heavy topics.”

Some schools in other states have removed the book, which was written mainly for Black queer youths, to make them feel “seen.”

“My book is not what is doing your child harm. It is you who will do your child harm by not allowing them to one, learn that other people exist in this world who have a different lived experience than them, and two, not allowing them to have the language, or this particular resource to deal with the problems that will come to them in this world when they arise,” said Johnson.

God, I hate my neighbors.

They’re losing their shit because the shopping center that fronts our community wants to put in a Wawa (convenience store) with gas stations.

There are legitimate concerns, but you’d think that a 24 hour whorehouse with a heroin drivethru window is going in. They are literally at “Our children are in danger if the convenience store that sell coffee and hoagies is allowed to tear apart our neighborhood.”

One of my neighbors, who is generally a great guy, compared the Wawa to the porn store that was successfully fought off a few years back. They really feel it’s that much of a danger TO THE CHILDREN. I’m sure once they find out I don’t have kids, I’ll probably have rocks thrown at my house.

Fucking white people. Go drive 10 miles west to Camden or Philly and see what the fuck an actual neighborhood in trouble looks like.

I need to stay off of FB. I should have left this one alone, but the latest fear mongering just got to me.
