I got a Behringer TO800 (Ibanez Tube Screamer clone) on Monday. I also swapped some tubes around in my VHT amp. The 5751 has a lower gain which cleans up the clean channel alot while the Overdrive & Distortion (Boss DS-1) give a better sound with the humbuckers on my PRS.

So you say I can spray water into my nose instead of vaccinating. BRB, attaching a garden hose to my face. Should I stuff Ivermectin in my nostrils first?

We’re having a little bit of an extended family Christmas this year, outside at a park. I really hate being around people during a pandemic, but it looks like I can get a 6-month booster 2 weeks before the event.

re: #172 steve_davis

tele upgrade continues: it has locking tuners now and a fender 3 saddle bridge and vintage bridge plate. The only problem is I’ve now ordered Glendale compensating saddles, so I could have saved myself 30 bucks or so by just ordering the plate. Still, didn’t know I would get the itch to go compensating. If the intonation had been perfect with the saddles that came with it, I wouldn’t be worrying about the glendales. Still, it’s a 3 saddle arrangement which means intonation is never likely to be perfect anyway (each saddle shares two strings). And I’ve got Seymour Duncan Vintage Broadcaster (bridge), and Vintage tele rhythm (a neck pickup) showing up tomorrow, and I’m gonna try to be brave enough to install them myself. I’m treating the whole guitar like a learning project. I’d like to become a damned good set-up man. Not a master luthier: I don’t have the skill set for that. But somebody who can look at a cheap strat in a pawn shop and think, “Yeah, I could change out all the pots and the pickups, and I could make that something nice.”

I’d like to try Seymour Duncan sometime. I replaced the bridge on my MIM Tele with a Gotoh bridge that has the six-saddle arrangement. It really resonates well.

Biden’s infrastructure bill, now signed into law, has been receiving praise and acclaim for demonstrating that it may be possible (just barely) to return to a world in which both parties collaborate on legislation to help this country. Manchin was the driving force to carve out this legislation from the larger package and manage to get support from almost 40% of the Senate GOP caucus. This was a real and healthy accomplishment, that many were certain could not be done. Of course between the time the Senate passed the bill and the time it was under consideration by the House, too many House Republicans were cowed into turning against what’s best for our nation.

Hopefully the BBB legislation will also get adopted, though sadly without any GOP support. But ultimately we have to figure out a way to purge the toxins that Reagan, Gingrich, McConnell, and Trump injected into the Republican Party and our nation. If we don’t, our fragile democracy will not survive this challenge. Yes — Bush 43 and Cheney le Pere also poisoned the dialogue, primarily on foreign policy issues, but did not stoke the racial and religious antagonisms that are so prominent today.

If the point of passing the bill was to show “bipartisanship” or whatever the new buzzword is for getting a handful of Repubs to support “governing,” then why was there so much fucking hatred towards progressives for refusal to “pass something”?

In the Arthurian legends, Sir Pellinore spent much time looking for the Questing Beast. He had a better chance of finding that that anyone has of finding a reasonable Republican.

Anyone that was still in the GOP as of 1/5/2021 while somehow not being a horrid person would have been out of the party as of 1/7/2021.

I recently purchased Chord Master by Rooksby from Amazon. I’ve liked it so far. Starts out with fairly simple chords that it thinks players ought to know, and then a section on triads, where you learn some chord shapes that represent easier chords to play than big barre chords. Sort of goes from there.

about that other statute that the judge ‘ruled’ on

at the time of the incident
from getting the gun
getting mom to drive
all the prelim activity
and then the actual shootings

no one, not him, his mom, the police, detectives —- no one
knew or relied on this statute

virtually no one knew it existed

it’s being used as an excuse now, to avoid responsibility - to get away with it

relying on that statute as legitimate justification, was no one’s intent at the time

Note last paragraph in the quote. I suspect that next year (before the midterms) is going to be… exciting:

Virginia school board rescinds decision to remove ‘sexually explicit’ texts from libraries

A school board in Virginia has reversed a recent decision to remove “sexually explicit” books from school libraries after the move stirred community outrage and drew harsh national criticism — especially over two board members’ apparent suggestion to burn the books.

The Spotsylvania County Public Schools board voted 5 to 2 Tuesday to rescind its decision, a week after two parents complained about inappropriate content. At the Nov. 8 meeting, the board unanimously directed Superintendent S. Scott Baker to reconsider whether every sexually explicit book in school libraries should be kept or permanently removed — forcing a team of about three dozen staffers, including all of the district’s librarians, to start poring through tens of thousands of titles.

…snip…

Although Braswell’s motion [to rescind the book banning] passed with a solid majority, he warned the decision may not hold for long, noting the board is gaining new members in January.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Miramax sent a cease-and-desist letter to Tarantino after the announcement but the NFT project persisted. Now the studio alleges the NFT project violates their intellectual property agreement.

Just got a vehicle warranty robo call from a +44 number - that’s the UK.

I get one of this pretty much every day.

“Our records indicate your automobile warranty is about to expire. Please press 1 for information on how to extend your warranty with the cheapest rates available!”

Our car is a 2001 Volvo station wagon with 175,000 miles on it.

For that photo? Team cheese.

There are plenty of toppings I like, but not the ones on that particular pie.

Mushrooms, green onions, red pepper & jalapeno are MY FAVORITE TOPPINGS so that’s what goes on the pie.

THUS SAYETH THE PIELORD.

Yeahbut, I’m sure you could afford an extended warranty of some kind if you didn’t drink lattes, read the New York Times, eat arugula and avocado toast.

Terry Newsome, a father who had two kids at Downers, said that his issue with the book is that it’s “liberal code for teaching children how to perform oral sex, anal sex, wear strap-on dildos. These graphic images are totally unacceptable regardless of their gender or sexuality.”

“It’s not your right to decide if our minor children should have access to pornography,” he said.

But Lauren Pierret, a senior at Downers Grove North, argued that plenty of books in schools’ libraries include sexual content, including The Handmaid’s Tale, but they do not receive the same backlash.

“Let’s not present getting rid of Gender Queer as censoring our children from sex,” Pierret told the meeting, according to the Sun-Times. “It’s homophobia.”

“Inclusion matters to young people,” said Josiah Poynter, another senior at Downers. “This is why we must have this book in our school’s library… It brings comfort to people who feel unloved and cast out.”

I’d like to try Seymour Duncan sometime. I replaced the bridge on my MIM Tele with a Gotoh bridge that has the six-saddle arrangement. It really resonates well.

this one, ironically, started out with a perfectly good 6 saddle, but I hated the look of it. Looked like a damned strat. I want this one to look old school, hence the 3 saddle refit, with one of the glendale saddles being steel and the other two brass.

“…In September, FERC and NERC issued a preliminary report recommending power plants and natural gas producers be required to protect critical equipment from freezing temperatures, as well as providing compensation for generators to recoup weatherization costs* — similar to recommendations made after a similar, but less severe power outage in Texas in 2011.

The agencies reiterated those recommendations Tuesday while including more detail on what in went wrong in February.
Among their findings were:

•Eighty-one percent of the generating units that froze up did so at temperatures warmer than they were designed to handle.

•Eighty-seven percent of unplanned outages caused by fuel issues were related to natural gas, as opposed to coal or fuel oil.

•Natural gas shortages were caused by production declines. Freezing temperatures and other weather accounted for about 43 percent of those declines while power losses from rolling blackouts or weather-related outages, such as downed power lines, were responsible for 21.5 percent of the declines.”

*See, we have socialism in Texas if your company is big enough.

Today my local community FB mod set up a subgroup to discuss local politics. It almost went off the rails immediately when a couple of “Free Kyle” people started spamming it (locals). The mod took the posts down. It remains to be seen if we can have a viable platform for cool-headed discussion of local issues. I’m gonna guess no.

Dogs do know sometimes, I think. Tuesdays are particularly heavy days for me, so when I came home I took the dog for a long walk because I knew if I sat down I wouldn’t get up. Then I went to lie on the bed to browse here and the news on Twitter. The dog came up and nestled against the small of my back so that I had this warmth and rhythmic breathing and before long I was fast asleep. It was bliss. Might be hard to get to sleep tonight, but I don’t care.

Chrome has gone to absolute shit.
-The backpage button has stopped working. A google search just uncovers a lot of bullshit, including a warning that they actually did this in 2017 and you must get a separate app if you want to add it back. Also advises using ALT-left but that doesn’t work either.
-Latest upgrade has also hidden the saved passwords. It used to be on the drop down list at the upper right. Now, you have to go to settings, run a search, then try to find the right page in the results. This is not so easy because this stupid yellow “results” flag pops up and hides the correct link. It is not closeable.
-“Refresh” button also won’t work.
-Cache won’t clear. Any effort just gets the spinning forever wheel. Same with reset.
-Can’t post images (I have screen shots of some of this crap, that still works.)

Today’s un-suspected factoid. Admiral Phillippe de Gaulle, only son of former President and WWII leader Charles de Gaulle, will be 100 on December 28.
He was a midshipman at the French naval academy at the time of the collapse in 1940. He did not flee with his father but managed to escape later and became an officer in the Free French Navy. He saw heavy combat during the war. This included commanding a platoon of Sherman tanks in the Régiment Blindé de Fusiliers-Marins (Marine armored regiment) during the liberation of Paris and the drive into Germany in 1944-45. He retired from the Navy in 1982 and was later a senator. His son, Charles de Gaulle II, is 73 and is a senator now.

Fascinating: Can’t be too many Free French leaders from the war left these days: nice to see at least one stuck around well in to the XXI - and to note also that it isn’t just the old Vichyites that tended to live long….
