Heading to the in-laws for Thanksgiving (shoot me now). I’m traveling solo and have a choice between renting a car and driving (12 hours over two days) or flying (PHL to SAV, 2.5 hour flight, probably 2 hours in PHL concourse.)
Both are not doing great health-wise; he’s gots early Alzheimer’s and she’s got COPD and will be getting minor valve replacement in the near future. This is in SC, which isn’t FL in terms of COVID insanity, but it ain’t NJ, PA or NY either. Both are vaccinated (shocking, given the amount of Fox News her mom watches.)
I’m leaning towards driving as a way to cut down on potential COVID exposure, in the theory that being by myself most of time will limit that. My big worry about flying isn’t so much the plane but the petri dish that is the airport proper.
Am I being overly paranoid/cautious about flying? As much as I don’t like her mom, I’m not real big on accidentally killing anyone by tracking COVID into the house.

My mom almost ended up in one of those places. It was 1960, and she and my dad had sex outside of marriage, resulting in me. My dad asked her a bunch of times to get married, but it took him a long time to convince her. On the day I was born, my mom’s mom showed up at the hospital, drunk, calling my mom a whore and that I would never be accepted as part of her family. Security had to drag her out of there. This was a Catholic home for unwed moms birthday they wanted to send her to, but she was 19 at the time and my dad and his parents took her home with them after I was born.
Something adults need to really understand is that a kid knows when they aren’t wanted. It may take awhile for it to dawn, but when it does, it messes up a lot. These homes don’t check the baby buyers out, not to mention what they do to the new moms they torment. My mom didn’t go through losing me that way, but she was resentful and angry towards me even as a baby. It messed my life up and kept our family from ever being close. What the hell is worth that?

Driving can be nice if the weather too is nice. Airports will be crowded and cause for concern but I’d fly. Double mask and gloves (several pair) would be a must for me and I would also consider adding a shield. I wouldn’t go into a restroom w/o gloves. Flushing is easy with your foot and if you’re a guy remember this: The purpose of elbows is fighting and flushing urinals.

Need some COVID-related travel advice:
Heading to the in-laws for Thanksgiving (shoot me now). I’m traveling solo and have a choice between renting a car and driving (12 hours over two days) or flying (PHL to SAV, 2.5 hour flight, probably 2 hours in PHL concourse.)
Both are not doing great health-wise; he’s gots early Alzheimer’s and she’s got COPD and will be getting minor valve replacement in the near future. This is in SC, which isn’t FL in terms of COVID insanity, but it ain’t NJ, PA or NY either. Both are vaccinated (shocking, given the amount of Fox News her mom watches.)
I’m leaning towards driving as a way to cut down on potential COVID exposure, in the theory that being by myself most of time will limit that. My big worry about flying isn’t so much the plane but the petri dish that is the airport proper.
Am I being overly paranoid/cautious about flying? As much as I don’t like her mom, I’m not real big on accidentally killing anyone by tracking COVID into the house.
I’ve travelled by plane several times in the last six months and haven’t caught covid yet (or anything else). Masks are still required in the airport.
If you have a choice, you might want to use the smaller airports though, they’re less crowded.
On the other hand, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest flying and everything else days, which might change your mind.

One of my aunts went through one of those adoptions in 1968. She was married, but had an affair and got pregnant. She gave the baby up for adoption. Everyone of that generation knew, but not us kids. Imagine our surprise when the adopted cousin contacted us over three decades later. At that point, my mother told us kids (hey, I was 40 then) that we had a half-cousin, here’s her name and phone number. I was the one who talked to her and gave her the medical information she wanted to know.
The thing that just killed me about the conversation was

This, and a couple other incidents from earlier in my life have hardened my attitudes about adoption. There are circumstances where kids need to be removed from dangerous circumstances. But I don’t think that just because a woman is unmarried and pregnant, she should be talked into giving up her baby for adoption. I think we would do better to try and keep children in intact families, rather than just shuffling healthy white babies off to wealthy white families. But that’s not what these asshats in the modern day version of the Edna Gladney Home want to do.
Women are not broodmares. That’s what these asshats want to go back to.

No booster yet; I didn’t fall into any of the approved early categories. The mask would probably not leave my face until well into the ride to their house.
I got my booster at a Walmart pharmacy as a walk in. Had to fill out a form for why I qualified for a booster. One of the options was due to my work, which listed examples like first responder, teacher, etc. My work puts me in close contact with a lot of people, so that’s the option I chose. I was never asked about what I actually do. If the forms are the same in your state, you can probably get the booster.

My pious grandmother got pregnant when she was young and wild, and was whisked off to an uncles farm. We found out about it when our new uncle called when he was about 50 (I forget the exact year).
