Among the many disturbing post-election details in Jonathan Karl’s new book are the actions taken on the former president’s behalf by pardoned criminal Michael Flynn and conspiracy lawyer Sidney Powell who pressed Pentagon officials to stage a coup and overturn the election results. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

England is going to face serious and unavoidable issues come Christmas…

Unfortunately, England has too many metaphorical turkeys which are obviously completely unsuitable for this purpose, and which were responsible for a large part of their mess.

Reminder: Rep. Preston Brooks, Democrat of South Carolina, went on the Senate floor on May 22, 1856 and beat Senator Charles Sumner (R-Mass) into near insensibility. Sumner’s “crime” was to have verbally attacked Brooks’ first cousin once removed, a Senator from SC.

So no, I can’t trust that Rep. Gosar isn’t going to go on the House floor with a weapon and beat Rep. Ocasio-Cortez into insensibility or worse. It’s happened before and in similar circumstances (heavily divided country).

Need some COVID-related travel advice:

Heading to the in-laws for Thanksgiving (shoot me now). I’m traveling solo and have a choice between renting a car and driving (12 hours over two days) or flying (PHL to SAV, 2.5 hour flight, probably 2 hours in PHL concourse.)

Both are not doing great health-wise; he’s gots early Alzheimer’s and she’s got COPD and will be getting minor valve replacement in the near future. This is in SC, which isn’t FL in terms of COVID insanity, but it ain’t NJ, PA or NY either. Both are vaccinated (shocking, given the amount of Fox News her mom watches.)

I’m leaning towards driving as a way to cut down on potential COVID exposure, in the theory that being by myself most of time will limit that. My big worry about flying isn’t so much the plane but the petri dish that is the airport proper.

Am I being overly paranoid/cautious about flying? As much as I don’t like her mom, I’m not real big on accidentally killing anyone by tracking COVID into the house.

In Kentucky the Governor today just made all adults eligible for the booster after 6 months (2 months for J&J). As for your travel plans, unless you want to consult a doctor, it just depends on your comfort level.

My mom almost ended up in one of those places. It was 1960, and she and my dad had sex outside of marriage, resulting in me. My dad asked her a bunch of times to get married, but it took him a long time to convince her. On the day I was born, my mom’s mom showed up at the hospital, drunk, calling my mom a whore and that I would never be accepted as part of her family. Security had to drag her out of there. This was a Catholic home for unwed moms birthday they wanted to send her to, but she was 19 at the time and my dad and his parents took her home with them after I was born.

Something adults need to really understand is that a kid knows when they aren’t wanted. It may take awhile for it to dawn, but when it does, it messes up a lot. These homes don’t check the baby buyers out, not to mention what they do to the new moms they torment. My mom didn’t go through losing me that way, but she was resentful and angry towards me even as a baby. It messed my life up and kept our family from ever being close. What the hell is worth that?

Driving can be nice if the weather too is nice. Airports will be crowded and cause for concern but I’d fly. Double mask and gloves (several pair) would be a must for me and I would also consider adding a shield. I wouldn’t go into a restroom w/o gloves. Flushing is easy with your foot and if you’re a guy remember this: The purpose of elbows is fighting and flushing urinals.

The Magdalene Laundries
Joni Mitchell
I was an unmarried girl
I’d just turned twenty-seven
When they sent me to the sisters
For the way men looked at me
Branded as a Jezebel
I knew I was not bound for Heaven
I’d be cast in shame
Into the Magdalene laundries
Most girls come here pregnant
Some by their own fathers
Bridget got that belly by her parish priest
We’re trying to get things white as snow
All of us woe-begotten-daughters
In the streaming stains
Of the Magdalene laundries
Prostitutes and destitutes
And temptresses like me
Fallen women
Sentenced into dreamless drudgery
Why do they call this heartless place
Our Lady of Charity?
Oh, charity
These bloodless brides of Jesus
If they had just once glimpsed their groom
Then they’d know, and they’d drop the stones
Concealed behind their rosaries
They wilt the grass they walk upon
They leech the light out of a room
They’d like to drive us down the drain
At the Magdalene laundries
Peg O’Connell died today
She was a cheeky girl
A flirt
They just stuffed her in a hole!
Surely to God you’d think at least some bells should ring!
One day I’m going to die here too
And they’ll plant me in the dirt
Like some lame bulb
That never blooms, come any spring
Not any spring
No, not any spring
Not any spring

Suspended Texas doctor who promoted ivermectin as Covid treatment resigns from hospital

Dr. Mary Bowden, the Texas doctor who had her privileges suspended last week by Houston Methodist for spreading “dangerous misinformation” about Covid-19 on social media, has resigned from the hospital.

She called vaccine mandates “wrong” and touted the controversial drug ivermectin as a treatment for Covid-19 multiple times on her Twitter account, despite public health officials warning against it.

Bowden, who worked as an ear, nose and throat doctor at the hospital, announced her resignation Monday evening on Twitter.

snip

In a press conference Wednesday, Bowden said she was targeted by the hospital.

“I think based on their history of being the first hospital in the county to mandate vaccines for their employees, that they are using me as an example, based on what they have read — which I have not sent to them but have sent to my patients — and what I have vocalized on my Twitter,” she said.

“Since when is that a reason to take away someone’s hospital privileges?” she said. “It’s astounding to me as a physician that I’m not entitled to my medical opinion.”

I’ve travelled by plane several times in the last six months and haven’t caught covid yet (or anything else). Masks are still required in the airport.

If you have a choice, you might want to use the smaller airports though, they’re less crowded.

On the other hand, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest flying and everything else days, which might change your mind.

re: #51 A Mom Anon

One of my aunts went through one of those adoptions in 1968. She was married, but had an affair and got pregnant. She gave the baby up for adoption. Everyone of that generation knew, but not us kids. Imagine our surprise when the adopted cousin contacted us over three decades later. It was assumed the adoption had been carried out in California, which had closed adoption, but no, it happened in Alaska, and she was able to get her original birth records. She was able to track us down, even though her mother and half-sister had both died at the beginning of the 90s because her mother had an unusual maiden name and married name. One CD of “100 million phone numbers” and the determination to call every D********* in California later, and she immediately landed on my mother’s stepmother, who turned her over to my mother and my other living aunt. At that point, my mother told us kids (hey, I was 40 then) that we had a half-cousin, here’s her name and phone number. I was the one who talked to her and gave her the medical information she wanted to know.

The thing that just killed me about the conversation was

aVjywUCsNmiZSTV6dM0vHy6hEueSm/Dil9So4A3dl/z/07A2owffSnveGTKzYS54VCKzg5dd0TeNCnbMLVClvgSppGYxt8/0KPZ4lJfa8zDh7sBroi3c+rdaABxDvSQhAwkjbeZGo6Aqzg8VoV3hCZHXgtD7vZBrw2dIQrxa2J4ci1tIITY56dVV+OJIYpWDGItZHGpji0SdxYD+CCjB3sf7HYOZq5O3ywFkNmqo9lwk+QoEmTb33uWZ0I5RQkPen+5PWmn+BHxbufWorJ2JSEk3uS3dyYz833bYS90mWCM=

This, and a couple other incidents from earlier in my life have hardened my attitudes about adoption. There are circumstances where kids need to be removed from dangerous circumstances. But I don’t think that just because a woman is unmarried and pregnant, she should be talked into giving up her baby for adoption. I think we would do better to try and keep children in intact families, rather than just shuffling healthy white babies off to wealthy white families. But that’s not what these asshats in the modern day version of the Edna Gladney Home want to do.

Heh. Is McCarthy arguing that since Kyle can get away with murder (just parroting the defense right now) then a Congressman should be able to?

What did the warning labels on music truly end up meaning?

You had to read them backwards to find out.

No booster yet; I didn’t fall into any of the approved early categories. The mask would probably not leave my face until well into the ride to their house.

I got my booster at a Walmart pharmacy as a walk in. Had to fill out a form for why I qualified for a booster. One of the options was due to my work, which listed examples like first responder, teacher, etc. My work puts me in close contact with a lot of people, so that’s the option I chose. I was never asked about what I actually do. If the forms are the same in your state, you can probably get the booster.

One of my aunts went through one of those adoptions in 1968. She was married, but had an affair and got pregnant. She gave the baby up for adoption. Everyone of that generation knew, but not the kids. Imagine our surprise when she contacted us over three decades later.

This, and a couple other incidents from earlier in my life have hardened my attitudes about adoption. There are circumstances where kids need to be removed from dangerous circumstances. But I don’t think that just because a woman is unmarried and pregnant, she should be talked into giving up her baby for adoption. I think we would do better to try and keep children in intact families, rather than just shuffling healthy white babies off to wealthy white families. But that’s not what these asshats in the modern day version of the Edna Gladney Home want to do.

Women are not broodmares. That’s what these asshats want to go back to.

My pious grandmother got pregnant when she was young and wild, and was whisked off to an uncles farm. We found out about it when our new uncle called when he was about 50 (I forget the exact year).

I wonder how the lady who was concerned about this vote on procedural grounds feels about Boebert accusing people of crimes on the House floor.

Can’t we simply re-name the Republican Party the 4Chan Party now?

It’s just what it has become.
