The Canadians were equally awesome on 9/11; when US airspace was shut down, 38 en-route intercontinental flights were diverted to a tiny town in Newfoundland. The 3000 people of Gander took in 7000 passengers, a couple of dozen dogs, and the flight crews. They gave them shelter, food, comfort, for days before airspace re-opened.

Weeks before student loan payments are set to resume after being suspended during the pandemic, 30,000 people are seeing loan forgiveness become a reality. The Biden administration’s changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program are going into effect. The teachers and nurses and paramedics and librarians and state and local government employees who the program was designed to help are finally getting their due.Under the program’s original design, public service workers were supposed to get loan forgiveness after making 120 payments over 10 years. But the vast, vast majority of people who were supposed to be helped instead found themselves snagged on one technicality after another, and the program fulfilled its promise to almost no one, with just over 16,000 people having ever gotten relief at the time the Biden administration took action.

Trust Fedex (the carrier). Amazon usually only projects the estimated arrival date once, when they receive the initial shipping estimate from the carrier. If it gets delivered faster, they may not receive that update. Only exception is for packages they deliver themselves, for obvious reasons.

Quite a story, and a macabre coincidence connected with it. HMS Highflyer, a British cruiser, was the command ship for the initial relief operation in Halifax since all the facilities ashore had been destroyed. Highflyer was also the name of one of the two ammonium-nitrate ships that exploded during the Texas City disaster of 1947. It was a merchant ship, with no relationship other than name to the 1917 cruiser.
HMS Highflyer had been within sight of the initial explosion in Halifax but had survived with little damage. Its executive officer and 7 enlisted men were killed, though, when they were sent in a small boat to investigate the fire on the ammunition ship Mont Blanc and got caught in the explosion when it blew up minutes later.

There should be a movie about one or the other of these disasters. With modern effects, the incredible scale of these half forgotten disasters could be brought home to the people of this century. If they did it right (a gigantic “if”) it could be very powerful. The Texas City explosion blew out half the windows in Galveston, 10 miles away. Two small planes circling the dock area, apparently sightseeing, were swatted out of the air like bugs. 27 of the 28 members of the Texas City Fire Department, and all 52 crewmen of the SS Grandcamp died in the explosion. Yet the nearest survivor was just 70 feet from the dock, protected by a concrete pillar in a warehouse.

One thing that jumps out at me about these “then and now” pictures is how much more pavement there is now. Horses and horse drawn vehicles were still quite common in rural Europe in the 1940s. When I was a wee mite in England, just a few years later, our milkman used a horse drawn cart (known as a “float” for some English reason) and a fair number of farmers still brought horse carts to market. America was more mechanized but a horse drawn wagon was not quite a complete novelty just yet.

Interesting picture!
One thing that many do not realize is that neither the German nor the Soviet armies were completely mechanized during World War 2. While they did have armor and mechanized-infantry military units that were largely mechanized, the vast majority of their infantry divisions still had large numbers of horses. And, of course, the Polish Army in 1939 was known for trying to stop the German armored divisions with cavalry counter attacks. Generally unsuccessfully.
Another anecdote, my father studied agriculture in Cornell back in the mid-1930s and learned how to plow using a horse. He was also in ROTC at the time. In the horse drawn artillery.

In the 1970’s I was in Israel for a year. One day I was riding a bus and we passed a horse drawn wagon being used for milk deliveries. The wagon driver was off dropping a milk delivery and the horse just waiting. Suddenly, the horse started walking to the next delivery house. (Without the driver.) Obviously the horse had done this so much that it knew the entire route.
At this point the bus passenger sitting next to me turned to me and said “Automated”.

Can’t tell you how many times NYPD will arrest people who actually sell metrocards to people who can’t swipe into the system. These fuckers openly flaunt turnstile jumping, which is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.

Yeah, I think that’s what it’s for and I seem to remember that there’s some way you ground the bridge pickup to the plate with an ad hoc bit of wire, but I think I’ll call SD Monday before I do anything involving a soldering iron (first soldering try. Learning something new!)
