Lyrics:
She drew me in with some kind of
diabolical mind control
She touched my body
and she touched my soul
A kiss like a tractor beam
And I could not resist the suction
Felt like seduction
Not abduction
Oh Alien love
It’s love
Alien love
It’s love
Huh

It’s Love Jim, but not as we know it
Not as we know it
Wherever she comes from they got a funny way to show it
But It’s love, love, love
That I’m in
It’s love, love, love, love, love
Captain
Huh

I stared into her eyes, they were black as onyx
The Earth was moving
Her very touch inspired tectonics
I feel compelled to meld with her
If she’ll have me
She knows I love her
Telepathy
Telepathic Alien love
It’s love
Alien love
It’s love
Alien love

It’s Love Jim, but not as we know it
Not as we know it
Wherever she comes from they got a funny way to show it
But It’s love, love, love
That I’m in
It’s love, love, love, love, love
Captain
Yeah

re: #104 lawhawk

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Put my instant pot to good use last night and made a batch of hummus. Best batch I’ve made by far. I made it from the dried chickpeas, so no overnight soak. I use fresh lemon, lemon zest, za’atar, and EEVO plus Trader Joe’s tahini, which is surprisingly good for flavor and texture. 1 cup of beans to 4 cups of water with a 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to cook the beans under pressure. Controlled quick release to stop cooking after 50 minutes under pressure. Mix until desired consistency in a food processor with eyeballing of the other spices and ingredients.

This is going to end unsatisfyingly because genre is more of a vibe than boundaried garden, so whether science fantasy or speculative depictions of the future count as “science fiction” is going to adjust the timeline considerably.

It’s also going to get weird when you realize that what consistutes “science” is also variable so stories that are now considered pure fantasy in the past would be considered to be speculation in keeping with the knowledge systems of the time.

Bingo. “Flying machines” and horseless transportation were dreamed of for years before becoming real.

Lots of black guys worked in the oil fields (covered in oil, everybody’s black). Lots of other black people worked as chauffeurs and groundskeepers and cooks and maids and butlers and handymen in the rich white people’s houses (oil town, lots of rich white people with big houses and a lot of staff) and country clubs.

They weren’t allowed to shop in white stores, or eat at white restaurants, or go to white theaters or parks or doctors and dentists. So they spent their money in black businesses. The profits from those businesses was also spent in black-owned small businesses. Etc. Segregation kept the money circulating in the community.

Econ 101. It’s not complicated.

While 94% of Marine Corps personnel have met the vaccination requirement or are on a path to do so, for the remainder it is too late to begin a regimen and complete it by the service’s Nov. 28 deadline. Within an institution built upon the belief that orders are to be obeyed, and one that brands itself the nation’s premier crisis-response force, it is a vexing outcome.”

Trump’s the best thing to happen for nuclear proliferation since Khan in Pakistan helped develop nuke tech for both North Korea and Iran in the first place. Trump actively helped both Iran and North Korea by giving them time and space to develop nuclear technologies further. His dumbassery made the world less safe and increased proliferation opportunities.

He made the world less safe.

“…Charges are pending against the woman, according to KCEN-TV, and she has been banned from the restaurant. She has not been identified publicly.

“We do not condone this type of behavior and hold our citizens to the highest standard,” Temple Police Deputy Chief Allen Teston said. “If a citizen believes they have received poor service, we advise them to remain civil until the problem is resolved.”

Broland said that she had been in the restaurant industry for six years and has never experienced this kind of behavior. She is pressing charges against the woman and asked followers not to bully her if she is identified.

People who act out violently like this should be identified so the rest of us can protect ourselves.

Again, as I’ve said before, at this point it really doesn’t matter what happens to him. The actual Kyle Rittenhouse looks like he’s going to be set on the grifter welfare circuit for a while now as their personal folk hero, and he’s gonna ride it out for as long as he can get away with.

It’s that there are only going to be more Kyle Rittenhouses after this latest success, bolder and brasher and less ashamed than before, and likely to have less restraint with their magical lead-throwing talisman of privilege.

If it’s not contemporary, it’s fantasy. Gravity sails are as much fantasy as wands.

As long as all the guns are clean and oiled, they’re well regulated. How do you have a conversation with somebody so dumb?

My wife and I like to play pranks on each other, but it escalated recently when I replaced her lipstick with a glue stick. She’s still not talking to me.

She got back at me by gluing my card deck together. I can’t deal with it.

hi

Well my wife and I went into town yesterday for groceries. We did not see any other person wearing masks at all, and some folks are getting aggressive again when they see someone else wearing masks (hint, this isn’t about “freedom” or they wouldn’t care).

Colorado has an indoor mask mandate, so maybe we should start doing our grocery shopping in Sterling (ninety miles one way).

Everyone has an opinion on the 2a like they do with vaccines. They’re all experts. Not mere law experts but Con law experts. Not mere doctors and scientists but infectious diseases and vaccine development as well.
Well, they’re not. So I Ignore most of the idiocy.

The problem we have with the 2a right now is the courts themselves ignored the entire militia clause so they didn’t even have to address interpreting what it means.

About a year and a half ago, there was a mask contest where I worked. One of the winners had printed a photo of the part of his face that was covered—on a mask. Maybe that could work.

It’s maybe 75-80% now.

The problem is until we get a majority liberal court again? It all but is a case closed. Any revisit of gun laws with the current court make up will likely only calcify the Heller ruling into even more of a cornerstone than it’s already treated as.

I lost all high frequency hearing in one ear while in college.

My ( now ex) wife was a speech therapist and taught me to lip read (a requirement in noisy environments).

It’s disconcerting when I’m in a noisy environment and naturally look at the speaker but they are wearing a mask with any kind of mouth.

Not an issue for other masks, but masks with mouths screw with my head.

Thanks. It’s an interesting dilemma. The places I’m most comfortable visiting have plexiglass barriers between the staff and customers and require masks. They are also the biggest issue when trying to hear.

But since I have a vulnerable daughter and an extremely vulnerable granddaughter, I continue to observe maximum precautions.

Plus my masks (kn95 or n95) keep me out of trouble when I mouth “asshole” at the unmasked.

They’ve been using that excuse for years.

No one wrote a constitutional amendment telling you how you must keep your property. It makes as much sense as saying your printing press must be kept clean and oiled.

It is a lie made up out of whole cloth (or gunmetal). Well-regulated meant then what it does now (as the debates surrounding the Bill of Rights show).

Workers here no longer wear them either. The grocery store took down its Plexiglas barriers and removed its social distancing stickers and signs.

Everyone in my town who can be is vaccinated, but we’re an island of sanity in the Panhandle (that might have come from the pre-vaccine deaths of a mother and father here; that scared the rest of the village straight).

The Panhandle vaccination rate is 40%. In my county, 0.5% of the whole county was newly-diagnosed in the last week.

State testing is still banned, and vaccines still restricted to only a few places. The public health director has arranged for people to call her personal phone to deliver volunteer nurses or physicians to remote areas to give vaccines, after the state prohibited using public health district money on that.

They basically just sell the belts anyway, you go long enough and pay your bills they are going to give you the belts to keep you coming. They are meaningless for most people.

In case we needed a reminder of where the narrative is going with this. And while there’s a point to be had here, it feels like the framing is very much intentionally laying it all at the feet of the Biden admin where it absolutely should not be.

Welcome to the Zimmerman trial 2.0, where the media pesters the WH about a case that they’re trying to avoid influencing until they finally make a statement, then turn whatever verdict turns out as a “loss” for the WH.

She, and a sweet looking she, claimed to be from China (living in Vancouver) and in Marketing. Yet she debated like some one in an entirely different field. Her English was flawless.

Also I checked her page and everyone of her ‘friends’ was a guy. European guy.

She, I’ll let her claim that gender but who knows, blocked me when I questioned her intimate knowledge of Chinese politics.

Opinion: China is perfecting a 21st-century method of destroying an entire people
by Fred Hiatt, Editorial Page Editor
washingtonpost.com

China’s Communist leaders, innovative in so many ways, appear to be perfecting a 21st-century approach to genocide.
With the Beijing Olympics less than three months away, will Coca-Cola and other sponsors of the Games celebrate with China while this is taking place? While, a few hours’ flight due west of the stadiums and ice rinks, an entire people is being slowly, deliberately erased?
We have learned to think of genocide as industrial-scale slaughter: gas chambers, killing fields, mass graves. A report published last week by the U.S. Holocaust Museum’s Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide, “To Make Us Slowly Disappear,” suggests that China may have found a different way, more insidious if no less monstrous.
The campaign against the Uyghur population of western China, a Muslim minority of about 12 million people inside a nation of more than 1 billion, began with conventional discrimination, escalated to intense surveillance and mass detentions, and now includes forcible sterilization and insertion of IUDs; separation of men and women through incarceration, forced migration and coerced marriages of Uyghur women to men from the ethnic Han majority; and mass kidnapping of Uyghur children, taken from their parents and placed in state “boarding schools.”
The campaign is not without terrible violence, torture and killing, as survivor accounts make clear. But, the report says, it hinges on something else: “coercive interventions of the Chinese government to prevent sizable numbers of Uyghurs from coming into being.”

Opinion: Biden administration soon to announce diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics
by Josh Rogin
washingtonpost.com

With the Beijing Winter Olympics just three months away, the Biden administration will soon have to make clear whether it plans to send an official delegation to China. But sooner rather than later, according to several sources familiar with the plans, the White House is expected to announce that neither President Biden nor any other U.S. government officials will attend the Beijing Games. This diplomatic boycott is intended, the sources say, as a way to respond to the Chinese government’s human rights abuses without impacting U.S. athletes.

The map is a little misleading, though the gist is accurate, the part of the Republic of Texas that extended past the slavery limit of 36’ 30” was much larger than just the small segment of what is now Oklahoma. The Republic of Texas also included a very large north-south panhandle that extended into what is now Wyoming. Note that most of Oklahoma (then known as Indian Territory) is south of 36’30”. Slavery was legal there, subject to tribal law.

The really stupid part about this is that the word Holiday is derived from the term “Holy Day” as in religious celebrations or feast days or whatever.

So no matter whether it’s a Christmas parade or a Holiday parade, there’s a recognition of the religious background.

They’re still pissy here about the state Board of Education recommending a set of voluntary sex education standards (schools would not have to adopt them) which says things such as “gay and trans people exist.”

Republicans all the way to Gov. Ricketts lied about what the standards proposed to do, massive protests organised by the GOP at BOE meetings occurred, and the proposed standards were withdrawn.

They’re still not happy though.

Petition drive aims to eliminate Nebraska Board of Education, give governor K-12 oversight (Omaha World-Herald, November 21, 2021)

Parents “don’t want the Board of Education” teaching their kids about sex, so they want the governor to teach their kids about sex.

A petition drive is underway that would give the governor substantial oversight of K-12 schools in Nebraska.

The sponsors aim to replace the Nebraska State Board of Education, education commissioner and Nebraska Department of Education with a new Office of Education accountable to the governor.

The governor would appoint the director of the office, subject to confirmation by a majority of state senators.

Kelli Brady, a sponsor of the petition, said the intent is to move “major functions” of the department to the new office and return some of the department’s responsibilities to local school boards.

Kelli Brady, frankly, is full of crap. She runs a Facebook group called Nebraskans Against Government Overreach which was created on December 2, 2020 (about the time the sex ed standards became a culture war for the right wing here).

They are now organising against mask and vaccine mandates.

Parents! Patriots! Freedom Loving Americans! NOW is the time to UNITE!
Join Nebraska’s largest groups as we stand in unison for protections from all mandates (testing, tracking, masking and injections) on our healthcare workers, veterans, students, employees and the general public across the state of Nebraska.
Let’s make our voices heard: We are asking Governor Pete Ricketts to call a special session to implement protections for individual health decisions.

nago.group

Because nothing says less government overreach than calling a special session of the state legislature (with the attendant costs to the taxpayers) to order public health officials and businesses what they can do.

I haven’t seen anything about the mother’s comments.

Comments unknown. In the film clip, after she asked her mother to talk to the teacher, she listened for a moment, threw the phone headset across the room and stalked out the door. I’m guessing her mother was not encouraging.
