Jury Finds All 3 Men Guilty of Murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s Death

Law • Views: 23,807

Our justice system has failed recently in spectacular, dispiriting ways, but today there was real justice for the three white men who hunted down and murdered Ahmaud Arbery in February 2020.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The three men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery in coastal Georgia last year were convicted of murder Wednesday, in a case that once went 74 days without arrests and that many saw as a test of racial bias in the justice system.

The decision was read to the court shortly after 1:30 p.m., following less than two days of deliberations. Members of Arbery’s family cried out with joy.

Travis McMichael, his father, Greg McMichael, and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan were all convicted of felony murder in the shooting of Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man — meaning they committed felonies that caused his death. They were also found guilty of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and attempt to falsely imprison. But Bryan and the elder McMichael were acquitted of malice murder, which involves intent to kill. Each defendant now faces a potential penalty of life in prison without parole.

All men still face federal hate crime charges.

This was another case in which the right wing tried like hell to smear the victim and taint the jury. They failed — this time.

As I noted downstairs, the one thing we have to remember on this day is that, if it hadn’t been for the accomplice’s attorney having his head up his ass and thinking that leaking the video of that day would bolster his client’s defense, the state of Georgia would have let all three walk on claims of “self-defense.”

Georgia penalties:
Malice Murder - mandatory life sentence
Felony Murder - mandatory life sentence
Felony may get parole option but in both cases there’s a 30 year minimum before parole eligibility.

IOW, they’re gonna die in prison. I think austin is right downstairs, they’ll likely plead to the fed charges so that they can be housed in Club Fed instead of general population back home.

Yeah, the only real heroes in this story are the prosecutors who saw this through from the moment charges were filed to today. Before that video went public, the state of Georgia was satisfied with the claims of “self-defense” and was prepared to declare that Arbery was at fault for his own death.

I desire a La Creuset.

I have a fance Staub cast iron and I use it all the time. Doesn’t cook any better than a $25 cast iron but it’s pretty blue and it’s enameled so you don’t have to worry about rust or seasoning. If you cook a lot like I do the good stuff is worth having.

because english is a mixture of old danish, old french, latin, and old english. we have an enormous word hoard to draw on. and yes, I have a 250 dollar clay casserole pot in my kitchen. It costs that because I can cook on the stove with it and then shove it in the oven with no issues. the idea that spending 300 bucks on cookware is somehow outrageous is an indication that someone doesn’t spend much time in a kitchen.

I’m thrilled that you’ve a way more optimistic view of the justice system in Georgia than…well, most everybody else. I would think that three DAs putting their thumbs on the scale, such that one of them is now facing criminal charges for doing so, would be evidence enough that the state did not want to prosecute these men and would have avoided doing so except for the actions of one dumbass.

I sort of thought we figured out this lesson when folks saw the initial press release in the Floyd murder that presented the murder of a man by a cop in broad daylight as a “medical incident” until the video was publicized.

The last time I looked, both of the cases had ended in convictions. Why do you have to keep thinking of reasons that shouldn’t have happened?

ETA: When the case is one person’s word against another’s with no other evidence, it doesn’t matter who they are, the benefit of the doubt should always go to the accused. That’s what “beyond a reasonable doubt and to a moral certainty” means. Just another reason it was so hard to convict cops in the times before we all carried cameras.

…what?

Where did I say that shouldn’t have happened? I said it wouldn’t have happened if not for the actions of an attorney thinking he was helping his client’s case by leaking the video the state was concealing to the public. And all the evidence so far indicates that that is exactly what the state of Georgia was prepared to allow happen.

At Little Caesar’s, they have the “hot and ready” pizzas that are supposed to be just walk in and get one (basically, plain cheese or pepperoni that they keep in the warmer up to a certain point in the night). My guess is, he came in at slam time or shortly after, and they didn’t have enough backfill in the hot and ready queue.

We are spending part of tomorrow with Mrs. Fish’s family. We stocked up in advance, knowing we will hear many things we will want to un-hear by the end of the event. Events transpired that resulted in some of it being opened for consumption a little early.

re: #95 A Mom Anon

This is the first year I can’t cook. Physically can’t. So hubby is disappointed and decided to make sloppy Joe’s for him and the kid. We’ll do bird related dinner when I can stand without getting out of breath and feeling so weak.

I’m just so sad. Cleo needs a bath, my house is just gross, and I can barely make it to the kitchen without getting weak and tired. I can’t afford the ER, my doctors office is closed for the week, and I am so tired of shit going wrong. So tired.

Life sucks sometimes.

Keep in mind that holiday traditions aren’t necessary for the spirit of the holiday. My kids and grandkids always see the extended family on their mom’s side. So we started a tradition of all my kids/grandkids getting together at one daughter’s home and having pizza the day after Thanksgiving.

It’s such a joy to see all my kids and grandkids together, interacting and enjoying family. Don’t get many opportunities to do that.

And the best part is we aren’t concerned or stressed about a dinner. After all: pizza!

Oh and my spouse has a magnet on the fridge that says “a clean house is a sign of a wasted life”.

;-)

I’ve got 16 pieces of Le Creuset, not counting the lids, anywhere from 10 to 40 years old.

It lasts pretty much forever and cooks a treat. As far as value is concerned, you have to amortize the costs to determine the value over time, and include the cost of the food that the cookware *doesn’t* ruin. When you look at it that way, Le Creuset is dead cheap.

I used to sell cast iron out of my bike shop, because my husband used to recondition and find the provenance on lots of cast iron. I learned a few things.

The only serious downside to the ceramic covered LeCreuset wares is for people who want to bake bread in a preheated hunk of iron. I talked with a woman who liked to toss a proofed dough-being into a hot dutch oven, and she cracked the ceramic right out of her LeCreuset.

Lodge is still there.

In fact, they are adding a new foundry at that location.

Also, a quick Google search gets this:

Finex, Lancaster, Lodge, Smithey, Stargazer, and The Field Company’s pans are made in the USA. Though Lodge produces the most affordable skillets on the list, each of the other manufacturers has a unique take on making cast iron cookware.

One of the disadvantages of cast iron is that it needs to be *used*.

If it sits in a cabinet for six months, the seasoning begins to get really nasty, and the cookware needs to be scoured and re-seasoned. This is much more common in warmer climates. It’s a pain in the ass. The seasoning gets sticky and stinks.

I’m not dry this holiday season, but I have taken a liking to some Portuguese wines that are 11% and under. Pavao Vinho Verde and Casal Garcia Vinho Verde. Most people prefer these chilled for summer, but I like them right now at our chilled room temp.

I love science.

[…]An early use was in the Manhattan Project as a material to coat valves and seals in the pipes holding highly reactive uranium hexafluoride at the vast K-25 uranium enrichment plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.[8]

In 1954, Collette Grégoire, the wife of French engineer Marc Grégoire, urged him to try the material he had been using on fishing tackle on her cooking pans. He subsequently created the first PTFE-coated, non-stick pans under the brand name Tefal (combining “Tef” from “Teflon” and “al” from aluminium).[9] In the United States, Marion A. Trozzolo, who had been using the substance on scientific utensils, marketed the first US-made PTFE-coated pan, “The Happy Pan”, in 1961.

Biggest factor is that colleges are giving way more money for financial need, because college is so damn expensive.

And did you note that the kid got into one or two of the selective colleges? That means she’s competitive with the student body, but not a slam dunk—-NOBODY is. And that her family makes at least six figures, because a family that doesn’t is going to get financial aid to make up for it.

I only learned of them a couple of years ago. I used to be able to get Picpoul, which I guess is a French version, for about $6 ten years ago, but now it’s about $13 here. But these remain cheap and low alcohol. I think they’re refreshing in deep autumn too.

There’s this weird “the West keeps spreading lies about North Korea” thing going on as if the torture and terror weren’t already well documented. It is centered on a Radio Free Asia report of someone bringing thumbdrives with Squid Games loaded and selling them to high school kids.

Yes, I understand that Radio Free Asia is meant to broadcast “democratic” values to Asian populations, and I understand the irony in our times. And it might seem odd that a show that criticizes the capitalist system would be at odds in NK. But there is a long order that no one can own anything that might allow access to outside information, so that part is true. Also the part about the fate of those who break the rules. So, I guess I have to give the reluctant middle finger to the NK apologists.

It’s one of the things I miss about being a contractor. As an employee, I’m NOT paid for being on call. Some of our contractors were paid full rates and overtime for every hour they had to be available on call, which resulted in some weird scheduling when they were asked to limit billing. They wound up handing off on-call shifts to those of us who were “only” paid for the hours actually worked.

He is manifestly unqualified for the job and will have no duties other than staying out of trouble, but his ability to manage even that is in serious doubt. The two most likely candidates, Boebert and Cawthorn, have got to be total shits to work for, too. A natural bully like Rittenhouse would reflexively see a woman or a man in a wheelchair as a target. Mom, your description of how you feel is a bit familiar to me. A few years ago I found it very tiring to walk even a short distance. I’d stop to rest a couple times between my parked car and the store or just walking to the curb for my mail…out of breath and a discomfort in my upper chest similar to acid reflux. Turns out I had a completely blocked coronary artery. A stent was inserted after the doc was finally able to open it up after much poking. I’m for ER and feel continued life is worth it. Your husband and son (you wrote about) need you.

re: #186 mmmirele

So much wrong with Candace’s thinking. With so many high schoolers taking AP courses to boost their GPAs, a 4.3 is very good, but it’s not super. And there are other factors involved.

Number 1 in my son’s high school class had a 5.0.

There is no right not to be arrested
Or indicted
Or charged
Or to stand trial
Or be sued

If you are found not guilty, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have been tried

That would be asinine

Refrigerators do not have “marinating drawers”. Even I know that.

My drawers are marinating right now

re: #235 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

There was a news story about that a while back. All of last year’s high school graduates took a gap year because of the pandemic, so there were two classes competing this fall, thus twice the competition.

That makes so much sense, thanks, lizards. After my son scored a 34, ahem, a 34, then we received a nice offer from a private U.
