Tonight’s low is supposed to be 14 °F (-10 C), and the cold will persist through much of the weekend. With all that said, that is not a record low - not even close - and a Thanksgiving without snow is not even noteworthy in these parts.

Tonight’s low here is scheduled to be 18°F with wind chills in the single digits. Tomorrow a Red Flag Warning due to extremely low humidity and high winds.

From the article, an evidence room technician hijacked a craptonne of drugs from the evidence room, then she and her boyfriend sold them.

They were arrested by the Feds. In the meantime, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s office is going over all the cases during the time she is alleged to have tampered with evidence. They note that some people may have already been convicted. They will also go over other cases during that time and will weigh in to drop those as well. As they identify cases, they are notifying the lawyers defending the accused in those cases so they can file to have charges dropped or reversal of convictions.

Stargate Project (the real one). This was reportedly instigated by Senator Claiborne Pell (D Rhode Island), who had a strong interest in the paranormal. James Randi and Martin Gardner both believed that Pell was completely sincere but extremely gullible.

Physicists Russell Targ and Harold Puthoff began testing psychics for SRI (Stanford Research Institute) in 1972, including one who would later become an international celebrity, Israeli Uri Geller. Their apparently successful results garnered interest within the U.S. Department of Defense. Ray Hyman, professor of psychology at the University of Oregon, was asked by Air Force psychologist Lt. Col. Austin W. Kibler (1930-2008)—then Director of Behavioral Research for ARPA—to go to SRI and investigate. He was to specifically evaluate Geller. Hyman’s report to the government was that Geller was a “complete fraud” and as a consequence Targ and Puthoff lost their government contract to do further work with him.

I’m done for the night. Y’all have a nice holiday tomorrow.

Oh y’all, he’s running for Texas Attorney General due to his firm grasp on law and reality.

Bringing you up to date on this Disney Land Adventure, our current AG in Texas is an indicted felon who has been successful in postponing his trial since July of 2015 on three counts of security fraud. He’s a big buddy of Donald Trump. Already in the race are George P Bush (Jeb’s son) and a very popular Republican Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman.

So why is Louie running?

Okay, Madam Swami Juanita looks into her rhinestone bedazzled crystal ball and gives it her damn best: I cannot find anywhere online an answer if he can run for both a federal and a state office at the same time in Texas. Thanks to Lyndon Johnson, you can run for both Vice President and senate for the same time in Texas, but I can’t seems to find a definitive answer in this case. Glen says yes but I dunno, so I am checking it out.

An additional $100 million in funding will likely be used to improve the state’s broadband networks to reach thousands of additional Nebraskans. Tonya Mayer, general manager of the Hemingford-based Mobius Communications, said the bill’s funding should help improve the broadband connections for people in the Panhandle.

“The infrastructure funding will bring more opportunity to connect people in the rural areas of Nebraska that currently do not have high speed connectivity,” Mayer said in an email to the Star-Herald. “It is expensive to construct fiber networks and the dollars could mean so much to those who struggle with working from home and providing robust connection for students to have online learning capabilities.”

Final maps determining which areas will receive funding are not yet available. Mobius has constructed more than 700 miles of fiber optic network in the last decade and serves more than 3,000 customers. According to the Nebraska Democratic Party, around 33,600 people statewide do not have broadband internet access. Many of these Nebraskans would likely be in rural areas, which the Panhandle has plenty of.

Highway, communications experts on how the new infrastructure bill affects the Panhandle (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

We’ll probably get fibre out to our town by the twenty-third century or so.

I’m so happy to have retired earlier this year.

Did get a frantic call a couple of months after retiring about a network outage that no one could resolve. Took about an hour to get the issue resolved and I was sent a $200 gift card and a gift.

While that was a nice recognition (for my ego), it also brought home how much I don’t miss that nonsense.

One of the many cynics I know posted this earlier. Thanksgiving usually goes pretty well for me, since I don’t feel obligated to be around any of my scuzzball relatives (and more of them die every year, which is something I could be thankful for, I guess.) I will work at our homeless outreach, then have dinner with some friends, talk to my grandchildren on the internet and maybe watch an old scifi movie.
I’ve been on a kick about that lately, currently watching Robinson Crusoe on Mars, a great movie that would have done better with a different title. It stars Paul Mantee (a talented actor who deserved more success), a pre-Batman Adam West, and Victor Lundin, who, like Mantee later became a staple of TV drama and probably deserved better. The real star though is Barney the Wooly Monkey, who plays Mona the astro-monkey and steals the show from the human cast. Like Linda Hunt in The Year of Living Dangerously, Barney was playing someone of the opposite sex. He required a wooly diaper to disguise that fact.

Yes, yes, it’s just like the conviction of Derek Chauvin proves America is not a racist nation. Let’s just ignore all the ways that the defendants benefited from their privilege as white men and just declare that the fact that 11 white people voted to convict based upon overwhelming evidence means racism played no part in arriving at today’s conclusion.

If psychic powers were real, investors would have created American Telepathy and Telekinesis, and we wouldn’t need telephones to talk long distance. We know science is real because it leads to real, measurable progress, while today’s paranormal and pseudoscientific bullshit is the same as its been for millenia.

Sweden’s new prime minister resigns after government falls (The Local)

Just hours after her election, Sweden’s incoming Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson handed in her resignation after a tense budget vote threw the government into crisis.

Her decision to step down followed a turbulent series of events that saw her budget fail to pass through parliament before the junior Greens Party announced it was leaving the coalition government.

“There is a constitutional practice that a coalition government should resign when one party quits,” Andersson, a Social Democrat, told reporters.

“I don’t want to lead a government whose legitimacy will be questioned.”

Andersson said she hoped to be elected to the position again soon as the head of a minority government made up of only the Social Democrats.

Wednesday’s crisis began when the Centre Party withdrew its support for Andersson’s budget, due to the concessions made to the Left. That meant the new PM’s budget didn’t have enough votes to pass in parliament.

Lawmakers instead adopted an alternative budget presented by the opposition conservative Moderates, Christian Democrats and far-right Sweden Democrats.

The Left hates America, so naturally it hates anything that has to do with our Judeo-Christian heritage, and that ineluctably means Thanksgiving.

Not the real Thanksgiving, but the rose-tinted-memories-of-how-it-is-supposed-to-have-been Thanksgiving.

Is it Leftist stores who open on Thanksgiving Day for Leftist shoppers?

re: #104 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I’m of the Left and have always “celebrated” Thanksgiving by overeating turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie (which I normally don’t even like). But I fully acknowledge that the Pilgrims mistreated and committed genocide against Indigenous peoples. We shouldn’t go along with the whitewashing of history.

Don’t get too wrapped up in the Pilgrims—genocide model. Mostly, the early contact Europeans got tangled in ongoing tribal conflict without much thought or long-term planning. The serious genocide kicked in several generations later. That’s pretty much the pattern when disparate cultures and technologies collide. No matter how cute he is, we are doomed the minute ET arrives.

Congratulatory Race Theory: stop traumatizing white Americans for uprooting entire tribes and peoples, stripping them of their dignity and identity and forcing them into unpaid work: they still jearned about the Divine Lord Jeezabus, and had (and still have) it better off then in those “sh*thole countries” they came from, right?

Tipping or doing a vapor-expansion trick when a half-frozen bird is submerged. It’s so bad around here that some smart volunteer fire departments let people have an expert deepfry at the firehouse driveway. They get the donation. and save the gas driving to the fires.

We’re going to our daughter’s house (an hour away) for a meal with immediate family (kids and grandkids.) Because life with a toddler and an infant is chaotic, daughter is cooking the bird, son is bring a veggie and we are bringing everything else. I am so looking forward to being together. I hope you all have a wonderful day however you spend it.

After the Civil War, Vicksburg did not celebrate Independence Day again until 1942

Ice turns into water. Water turns into steam. Steam turns into HOT FIERY DEATH when it displaces hot oil out of the vessel and onto a gas burner. Those volunteer fire departments have a great gig going, that’s actually a neat idea.

First, fill a large pot with oil, get it really hot then add a frozen turkey.

Now wait a few minutes and you’ll have the proper means of roasting the chestnuts.

Mrs. Fish made the rice for her fried rice last night, because it just doesn’t taste as good unless the rice has been sitting in the fridge for at least half a day. Leftover rice is the only way to make fried rice.

The younger child could be a brother, since it was common for the well-to-do to dress boys in gowns too in those days.
I remember talking to a friend’s wealthy and very aged grandfather (born in 1885) back in the early 70s. He said when he was little, he and the other rich kids envied the poor boys for their comfortable, practical clothes, and especially for being allowed to go barefoot in warm weather. He thought the popularity of the “sporting life” (hunting, fishing, rowing etc.) among the wealthy in those days was really about an excuse to dress in loose fitting, comfortable clothes.

I have one of these. I have had it for like 40 years and I still take it out when my kids come to visit.

We do too. And my dad still has 2 also. He keeps trying to give one of his to us, but we have to keep telling him we already have one.

Wishing all here and theirs a good day. In whatever capacity you do or do not do on this day matters not. Just have a good day of it.

And a big thank you to Charles who made this here possible.
An Oasis in the dessert of social media we have. And also a fine place to learn things I did not know.
Peace.

Dessert. Why yes we will be having dessert.

Is that chocolate or coconut cream? I’m for all pies except sweet potato. I have just never liked the texture.

Paul Prudhomme’s sweet potato /pecan pie with Chantilly cream is the bomb

I was on the road yesterday, and was listening to a lot of Bloomberg Radio - one of their hosts brought up this exact point: yes, inflation is a not a totally imaginary issue; but:

1. Its causes have little to do with [the current] Administration policies, but are rooted in the economic effects engendered by the 2020 pandemic: these are/have been handily identified by economists.

2. The worst of the inflationary effects have been concentrated in fairly few sectors: pump prices of gasoline, food at the market, and , of course, the ongoing chronic issues in housing - unfortunately, these are precisely the few that consumers see and experience up close. And which lend themselves to media over-hype…

3. Most economic analysts (at least those BBR gave airtime to) are pretty sure that many of the perceived problems are indeed, temporary (or, as the Admin has made standard terminology, “transitory”) - and should ease up somewhat by the 1Q of 2022 (2Q latest).

What I also found interesting was that (despite the usual ifs, ands, and hedging), most of the people on-air seemed fairly convinced that the US economy was actually is pretty good shape: and that the outlook for well into next year was reasonably positive. Less good, though, was their general opinion that the political outlook was less rosy: as several of them pointed out, the incumbent Administration always get the blame* for whatever economic problems happen on its watch; no matter what the causes.

*except, of course, for the Trump Administration, who just lied about the economy (as with everything) and got the usual pass from the “MSM”…

re: #62 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I wonder if this means they will refurbish the Old US-6 Lisco State Aid Bridge down the road from me? (When I cross it I wonder if it will hold the weight of a Smart. It’s marked 8 tons but that seems generous.)

[Embedded content]

Our state aid bridge here was replaced in 2009 when they re-aligned US-26.

I hope our county gets money to fix and reopen this bridge (below). It has been closed for 15 years. Have to come all the way into town to get across the river and then backtrack on the other side of the river to get home.
