Happy Thanksgiving to all, as Antoine turns the main melody of Donna Lee inside out.

Check out In The Style Of Antoine Boyer lesson series:
dc-musicschool.com

Antoine Boyer performs his own interpretation of Donna Lee. Please note this performance is NOT part of the actual lesson series.

These are strictly performance videos for our youtube channel.

Rhythm Guitar: Denis Chang
Bass: Denis Chang

Antoine Boyer, 19 years old at the time of this recording, has already established himself as one of the leading players of Gypsy Jazz. He recorded his first album at the age of 12 and has since shared the stage around the world with many of the greatest musicians such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Phillip Catherine, etc. From a very young age, he was bathed in the most authentic world of Gypsy Jazz but his musical world is not just limited to the world of Django Reinhardt; he is also heavily influenced by contemporary classical music, and these influences are very apparent in his improvisations.

Yelp Reviews, Tic-Toc Cafe:

“…I try to avoid dining at places like this which put their MAGA politics on their front doors and ads. MAGA cancelled their last Thanksgiving and Christmas, but they want us to be angry that gas is 50 cents more. I’ll dine down the Causeway.”

I often mention that we’re more likely to get mandatory gun ownership laws passed than any sort of reasonable gun control laws with the lay of the land as it is.

Seems like folks in New Mexico are putting that idea to the test:

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian news agencies say a fire at a Siberian coal mine has killed 52 miners and rescuers.

Officials previously said that rescuers found 14 bodies and the search for 38 people missing was halted for safety reasons, because of a buildup of explosive methane gas and a high concentration of toxic fumes from the fire.

The state Tass and RIA-Novosti news agencies cited emergency officials as saying that there was no chance of finding any survivors.

The Interfax news agency cited a representative of the regional administration who also put the death toll from Thursday’s fire at 52.

PCVR users aren’t into it either. Facebook gutted the low end of the PCVR hardware market, and many PCVR games now look like phone games so they can also run on Quest 2.

There’s also the privacy issue. Everyone can see that it’s still Facebook and that they’ll monitor every interaction in VR.

They like the idea of the sci-fi Metaverse, and several companies are working on their own versions, but they see Facebook as the evil company in a movie about VR from a few years ago, Ready Player One.

Standalone VR users are all in Facebook headsets, but even a lot of them hate Facebook. They just like the low price. The market for their Metaverse may be smaller than they think it is.

There was a town in Illinois, and one in Georgia that also passed a must-carry law. All I can think of is the time Clint Eastwood was elected to office in some small town in California. There was an editorial cartoon showing Clint holding a fellow committee member at gunpoint (“Go ahead, make my day!”) while another committee member says, “It would be a good idea to table that motion.”

I’m numb and cynical enough to say that recordings and live webcasts of these meetings would be much more entertaining than the usual meetings I’ve been in as an appointed official.

“…The entrepreneurs sued the Trump Corporation and the family members that starred on the NBC show—the Donald, Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric—claiming that they were presenting ACN as a decent investment without revealing that they were secretly getting paid millions to do so. The New York Times, citing Trump tax returns reporters there had managed to obtain, would later reveal that the multi-level marketing company had paid him $8.8 million over 10 years.

“Trump repeatedly misrepresented ACN’s risk profile to consumers, falsely claiming that investing in ACN was a low-risk entrepreneurial venture,” the lawsuit states. “Trump repeatedly told his audiences that he endorsed ACN because he believed it offered a reasonable probability of commercial success. He touted ACN’s commercial prospects and his regard for its founders. And he failed to disclose that he was, in fact, being paid millions of dollars for his ACN endorsement.”

We took a nice three-mile walk through the New Hampshire woods this afternoon. Once home, I took the dog to the local deserted college campus for another walk. Just came home at dusk and it was something to see directly into some folks homes from the car as they ate Thanksgiving dinner. I don’t miss the fuss and hectic nature of big multigeneration Thanksgivings, but that time at table with a glass of wine and little mounds of things poking through a sea of gravy—I felt just a tinge of nostalgia.

Anyway, time to go season the steaks. They’ll go in the oven once the stuffing is done. I’ve never had stuffing with steak before, but I’m confident it will pass….mustard.

I just gassed up the Ranger. They don’t let the driver pump the gas in this state (with a brief pandemic exception) so it was easy. ‘Mini serve’, so no window washing, and I didn’t even see a place to top off the tire pressure. I have a pump and a gauge. I even remembered which side the hole to put the gas in is on. Whatever it’s called.

They’ve been doing it since 1932. A quick online search finds a news article claim that “As for the records of both teams in their Thanksgiving home games, the Detroit Lions have accumulated 37 wins, 42 losses and two ties” Considering how bad the Packers were during the 70’s & 80’s that’s probably where many of the wins came from.

Just so the Cowboys lose today.

Had a 57 Chevy sedan, not the favored coupe, and it was beat but it was a freaking 57 Chebbie.

I recall cars from even the ’60s into the ’70s that had the gas filler (with no key on the cap) behind the license plate in the back - the plate was on a hinged holder that (unless/until the rust got to it) swung down.
IOW, back from the days before any thought the idea of someone stealing gasoline was a major issue.

We always said “Where’s the gas cap”. Because older cars did not have doors, just the gas cap mounted on the rear. The door was a more recent innovation.

Or behind the license plate.

Clint Eastwood was mayor of Carmel — it’s a beautiful, wealthy town (population less than 4000), their only industry is tourism. He was a pretty run-of-the-mill mayor.

Gas goes straight into my 10 Imperial gallon tanks—one directly under the driver’s seat, one under the passenger. To fill them, you remove the seat cushion and twist off a 4-inch cap. Then you can look straight to the bottom of the gas tank. That’s handy because the gas sending units haven’t sent since at least 2001.

Quebec produces nearly 70% of the world’s maple syrup, with the US being its biggest client for the sweet stuff. However, this year producers weren’t able to keep up with worldwide demand, which jumped 21%, according to Bloomberg.

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that about 300 to 400 boxes in various sizes were found in the ravine located on private land on Wednesday.

“Hopefully we will have some answers soon,” sheriff’s officials wrote.

After being contacted by authorities, FedEx sent “multiple trucks and drivers from all over the south” to recover the packages. Officials said work to load up the packages would begin “as the sun comes up” on Thanksgiving. A deputy was to remain on scene until the work is finished.

Authorities didn’t speculate on who might be responsible for the dumped packages, but issued thanks for employees for coming to work on the holiday.

Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon told al.com the packages had been at the scene within the last 24 hours and that deputies would stay with them until trucks arrived to collect them.

The Browns and Lions have each won four NFL championships (pre-merger). Since the 1970 merger, neither the Browns nor the Lions have ever been to a Super Bowl, and both teams have each made 12 playoff appearances. The Lions have not won a playoff game since 1991, and that year they went to the NFC Championship, their only appearance in that game. Their last playoff appearance was in 2016, losing to the Seahawks. The Browns have been to three AFC Championship games, losing them all. Their last playoff win was last season against Pittsburgh, then falling to the Chiefs in the Divisional round. I’m not picking on either team, as I’m a Texans fan, and grew up with the LOL Oilers.

I very much like the Who as well, but if I were going to be stuck on a desert island for the rest of my life and only had access to one rock artist for the entertainment system, I’d take the Stones over pretty much anybody, even Rush, which produced probably a dozen albums that rate as listenable more than once. The Stones just kind of have a vibe for every occasion. There’s early blues homages, there’s brilliant 60’s pop, there’s some very decent country, and then there’s just flat out rock and roll. You get Moonlight Mile on the same album as Sway. And it still all mostly hangs together.

SWAT standoff near airport continues into Thursday night, public asked to avoid the area

SWAT and FBI are currently responding to a standoff situation in North Lubbock at Interstate 27 and Regis St. One unidentified man is in a standoff with law enforcement at the National Guard Armory by the airport.

The LPD needs the public to avoid the area as they work the SWAT callout.

A Cranky One  Nov 25, 2021 • 8:08:53pm

Happy Thanksgiving evening all.

Back from dinner at my son-in-laws. Got to hang with the grandkids (2 yr old and 8 yr old) and the rest of Mrs Cranky’s family.

We don’t see them as often as we’d like since it’s 4.5 hours round trip. So wonderful to visit with all.

There was a ton of food including a spatchcocked turkey and large ham.

Sadly while there was a ton of food, it was just so … middle American (including the infamous green bean casserole).

But a good time was had.

We usually see all my kids and grandkids on the Friday after but covid complications mean that is postponed.

But I got a fix of grandkid time. It was almost enough to keep me from being cranky. 🙃

Edit to fix post errors due to commenting using a phone.

Covid 19 coronavirus Delta outbreak: New mutant strain reaches Israel

The South African variant B.1.1.529 has been discovered in Israel, the Israeli Health Ministry has announced.

The variant was found in a traveller from the African nation of Malawi.

Two other cases of Covid-positive returnees from overseas are also suspected of being infected with the new strain.

The Ministry said that genetic sequencing has been done and the results are pending.

All three of the travellers were reportedly vaccinated.

Israel has subsequently closed all incoming from parts of southern Africa.

It was the default when a student couldn’t figure out what they wanted to pursue after high school: “You like games right? Like computers? Get a degree in that, everybody will be hiring folks to work on computers in the future.”

Another example of how this virus must be fought everywhere if it is to be controlled. The Delta variant originated in India; this apparently comes from South Africa which has about 24% fully vaccinated. To protect Americans, the rest of the world needs access to vaccines and many places do not have the resources or this access. The anti-vaxxers, here and abroad, are causing problems but the new variants also arise where populations are unable to be vaccinated.

Brits are desperately trying to keep out both virus and migrants:

The migration problem is going to grow in coming years and decades. I expect it to be the defining problem of the 20th century from a political point of view.

The causes are many, from climate change to religious wars.

I highly expect that someone worse than Trump will be elected President before 2050, and that American politics will become completely unraveled over migration issues before the end of the 21st century.

Europe, including the UK (who it seems are in denial that they are part of Europe) is facing this problem sooner. Current migration problems will magnify.

Mom’s still looking to get him out of the assisted living space. We’ll have to talk her out of that…again. The reason he’s doing so well is BECAUSE of the care he receives there…not despite it.

But they’re old, convinced they know better and what are you going to do?

That was my cousin about 2007, except it was Phoenix, it was pouring down rain (one of the six days a year it does that) and not long after that, the rafters caught on fire. My cousin’s family has since returned to their native habitat, Dallas.

I took a picture of myself in the bathroom mirror at my mother’s house.

I’m on call all weekend, which kinda sucks. The previous team got called out late Wednesday night/early Thursday morning when end of day batch processing wasn’t going as expected. So far I have not been called, but I’m going to switch over to my work box soon to actually do some work.

My brother cooked a full Thanksgiving dinner — turkey (which finished an hour earlier than predicted but was a full 180 F inside, so he pulled it out, and it was fine, actually falling off the bone fine), stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, cranberry sauce. Our stuffing is untraditional, it starts with a base of (Uncle) Ben’s Long Grain & Wild Rice, to which walnuts, cubed bread, celery, chicken stock, spices and I’m sure I’ve forgotten something are added. He made a huge pan of it because we love eating it. My mother ate twice as much as everyone and didn’t even manage to stay awake for the pie (pumpkin and pecan) course. I also ended up in a tryptophan-induced coma, but after the pie, and it was probably the best sleep I’ve had in a week.

I still need to find out if my sister is getting the fruitcake for mom this year, or if I need to order it. It’s not Christmas for Mom if there isn’t a fruitcake from the Collin St. Bakery in Corsicana.

First evidence is that the B.1.1.529 variant is more communicable than Delta which is a red flag in itself. The Schmott Guys (tm Phil Foglio) looking at the genetic analyses and protein coats see that it’s got enough differences from previous SARS-nCoV-2 variants that they think there’s a good chance existing vaccines and acquired immunity will be less effective (but not totally ineffective) against it. What’s not yet known is the severity of any resulting infections from this variant.

The WHO defines two types of SARS-nCoV-2 variants — there are Variants of Interest (VoI) which are something to keep an eye on since they might lead to something more dangerous and then there are Variants of Concern (VoC) which are the ones to really worry about right now. The B.1.1.529 variant is officially classed as a Variant of Concern.

The EU is now recommending the suspension of all airline flights from southern Africa to Europe with immediate effect. It’s up to the member countries to decide on this but it’s clear that the scientific advisory committees advising governments are really REALLY worried about this variant.

Stocks, oil prices and government-bond yields slumped after South Africa raised the alarm over a fast-spreading strain of the coronavirus, triggering concern that travel restrictions and other curbs will spoil the global economy’s recovery,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

CNBC: “The downward moves came after WHO officials on Thursday warned of a new Covid-19 variant that’s been detected in South Africa. The new variant contains more mutations to the spike protein, the component of the virus that binds to cells, than the highly contagious Delta variant. Because of these mutations, scientists fear it could have increased resistance to vaccines.”

I read the article associated with the video and the shooting. It’s a horrible story all the way around. The best part - the shooting was 3 weeks ago, and as of the date of publication (today), no arrests have been made nor charges filed. The Lubbock Police Department agree with this guy that he acted in self-defense. HE FIRED A GODDAMN WARNING SHOT AT THE GUY’S FEET. I’d grab the gun too, if somebody actually fired in my vicinity when I’m just there to pick up my kid from my cheating ex-wife.

But then he pushed me off my porch!
And then you brought your gun up, sighted it on him, and did the double-tap.

They should always charge the person, in my opinion. Drop the charges later if evidence warrants it. But it’s pretty clear the shooter wasn’t in danger even though the victim was larger than him.

I’d like to see laws where anyone who uses a gun in conflict is automatically charged with at least a misdemeanor discharge violation and if a person is injured assault. If a person dies, then felony manslaughter pending police investigation. Allowing police to on the spot justify a possible homicide is just unconscionable. Even suspected suicides warrant more investigation than that.

re: #278 Nojay UK

All those aspects of the variant are valid reasons for concern, but at this time we don’t know whether it will turn out to be an actual threat — which is why everything we post about it is full of “mights”and “may be’s.” There have been similarly concerning variants in the past that didn’t turn out to be dangerous “in the wild.”

That’s all I’m sayin — don’t panic in advance of data.

I think being legally able to kill someone is the ultimate extreme of dominionism. There is no greater power than taking a life with no consequence.

It is at the core of US Gun culture. It’s not about hunting, self defence, tyranny, or any of the words that are used - what it is actually about is preserving the cultural right of white men to kill anyone they want if they feel like it. It’s why Kyle Rittenhouse was never going to be convicted and why Ahmaud Arbery’s murderers would never even have been charged were it not for a national outcry. It’s why it’s so surprising they were actually convicted. It’s why US cops are not police but an occupying garrison, and why the immediate cultural response to ‘Black Lives Matter’ was to say ‘Blue Lives Matter’, as if we should all understand that American police are diametrically opposed to black people and that it’s us or them.

America can’t have gun laws that work, because for that to happen, it would mean that American laws - which are designed to protect an in-group and constrain an out-group - would then have to bind American guns; which are meant to enforce the power of the in-group against the out-group. These are one and the same, and having them do the opposite of their intent - impose limits on white men and the rest of the in-group - would attack the very heart of America.

If it turns out this variant is a Bad Thing then panicking after it has got its nose in the door and spreading widely throughout a population is pointless. Panicking now and over-reacting and finding out later it was a nothingburger has a lower body count in the long run. In reality trying to contain this variant in southern Africa probably won’t work forever but it might buy the rest of the planet time to prepare for Bad Things happening and keep the resulting body count down.

Back when this mess kicked off in early 2020 I read an opinion piece written by an epidemiologist who had consulted on Ebola and worked on the original SARS coronavirus outbreak. What she said was, from memory, “[for this coronavirus] the only proper reaction is an over-reaction.”

They probably even favour not having a fascist hate cult representing them. But what they favour is one thing. It seems our right wing has an inate desire to treat farm animals better than humans.

It is well known among horse breeders that a mare can conceive as early as 12 months old but average around 18 months old. But most breeders wait until at least 2 1/2 to 3 years old for the mare to foal safely. Just because the female can get pregnant at a certain early age does not mean it is a good idea.

Remember too that during American slavery farm animals were also often treated better than slaves.

I just found it. She’s the ex of the shooter. I thought she was the ex of the vict…er, guilty party:

“Court records show that the suspect in a fatal shooting early this month in South Lubbock is William Kyle Carruth, a land developer and the ex-husband of the judge for the 72nd District Court in Lubbock and Crosby counties.

Carruth was identified in a Nov. 8 affidavit signed by Judge Anne-Marie Carruth, who wrote that she was “notified that my husband, William Kyle Carruth, is under investigation for the shooting and killing of his girlfriend’s children’s father after he attempted to pick up his children late Friday afternoon. My knowledge of the incident is very limited at this time and it is my understanding that the police are still investigating.”

Carruth stated that she hadn’t spoken to her estranged husband about the shooting but said she was “very concerned about his mental state.”

Speaking of Lubbock Gun Crazy:
1 in custody after SWAT standoff near airport ends Friday morning

After more than 30 hours, one person is in custody after a SWAT standoff in North Lubbock at Interstate 27 and Regis St., near the National Guard Armory by the airport.

Police confirmed an unidentified man was taken into custody around 9:00 Friday morning.

Northbound lanes of I-27 at Regis Street are back open. The public should still avoid the area as law enforcement work to clear the scene.

There is currently a very large police presence at the scene including SWAT, FBI, a bomb squad and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office.

Commenters keep referring to the prisoner as “a soldier” or “the soldier.” Apparently there has been some local coverage to that effect that I have not seen. No telling what this is about, but a vaxx mutineer is an obvious possibility.

Remember when the most common disrespect of the flight crew was sexual harassment? Now it’s violence about masks.

This open carry thing is getting people killed. We can’t have it like this. Guns don’t belong at protests. Not even in riot police if we can help it. Guns don’t replace police for civil matters like custody.

If I read the article correctly, the ex of the “guilty party” (I see what you did there, and I love it) is currently having an affair with the shooter, and it was her refusal to give up custody of their kids that brought him to the doorstep that fateful day.

And now the kid(s?) saw or heard dad get shot to death by Moms boyfriend? My god that’s so life scarring for them.

That’s like the old joke that every fruitcake in existence has been around since the ancient Egyptians and has just been regifted.

The widow is bringing all this out because she wants to get the kids out of that house and away from the man that murdered her husband. That’s an unbelievable situation that they’re in.

re: #334 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

The reason we can’t have gun laws is that a few old white guys from red states sit in the senate and block them from even being discussed, while white guys in DA and police offices don’t take violations seriously enough. A majority of Americans favors gun restrictions, and that’s been the case for a long time.

Let’s not forget SCOTUS and its role in undermining gun control laws. As long as there is a Republican majority on the Supreme Court, gun control laws are likely to be very limited, and existing state ones may very well be overturned.

Keep in mind that buying one of these cakes you are supporting Trappist monks and their way of life. The steamed chestnuts are a little cheaper at $10 to $20 for a jar.

Steamed chestnuts are gross. This has been a public service announcement.

Worth noting that the principals in the Lubbock shooting case are classic yokel gentry, basically dumber than rocks but with enough inherited privilege and contacts to be relatively wealthy in a social environment that openly favors this kind of privilege. The right to use violence against lesser persons, an obvious legacy of slavery, is a deeply ingrained part of this subculture. I know these people. I beat them like a drum in business. Now the world has to beat in politics and in every other respect.

They sell them at Christmas markets here in Western Europe (well, assuming we have many this year). Little stalls, very old-timey Dickensy.

Still gross.

Fifty to a hundred bucks for a Fruitcake?! Next thing ya know this item will be in a Fox report about inflation lol. I see why they offer to finance a purchase. //

I have a friend who believes there’s only one fruitcake in the world, it just gets passed around. Nobody eats it, they just save it for next year and give it to somebody else.

Collin Street fruitcakes range from $34.95 (1 lb, 14 oz) to $72.95 (4 lbs, 14 oz), sliced. They’re a few bucks cheaper unsliced. They come in a metal tin. And if bought today, they’re shipped for free. Reminder, this is a fruitcake. If you’re not into candied fruit in a heavy cake, this is not for you. (It’s not for me.)

When I was in high school, we sold them every year as a band project to help purchase instruments, uniforms, trips. I love them. Several years ago I realized I can still buy them, for heavens sakes. So I buy one a year around this time, and force myself to a limit of only one. Calories, for heavens sakes. But yum.

I addressed this revelation back in 2016 in the context of the justly reviled Canuck “treat” known as Kerr’s Molasses Kisses.

Why the World’s Worst Halloween Candy — Kerr’s Molasses Kisses — Continues Its Reign of Terror

This stuff is not usually sold in the US, so the Canucks do not in fact have the best of everything. It is sold for the same reason holiday fruitcake is still marketed throughout the civilized world, and even in Lubbock: Nobody likes it but it has acquired the sacrosanct status of “tradition.”

Incidentally, no new fruitcakes have been manufactured since 1977. They are like pre-‘86 licensed machine guns in that respect. The existing supply is simply passed around, usually among family groups. Each recipient hides the unwelcome morsel until the next round of holidays, then unloads it on someone else. Since no attempt is made to actually eat the things, noone is the wiser. Besides, a 40 year old fruitcake in its canister is probably as edible as it ever was.
True.
Fact.

Ah, but there is more than one fruitcake simultaneously. Problem.

However, there’s the thought experiment by Feynman that there is only one electron in the universe, and that all electrons and positrons are the same electron going backwards and forwards in time. In the same way, there may only be one fruitcake in the universe, but this postulates the appearance of anti-fruitcakes. At some horrible point, a fruitcake and an anti-fruitcake may collide, releasing energy per E=mc^2, and because of the enormous mass of the fruitcake and (anti-?) mass of the anti-fruitcake, would cause an explosion of possibly hundreds of megatons equivalent* and destroy vast parts of inhabited territory. Something to think about.

*apparently an explosion of 1kg of antimatter equates to about 43 megatons of TNT. Supposedly.
