Lyrics

Dressed up in the emperor’s old clothes
And they’re pulling at a thread
Naked with your empty heart exposed
You will wish that you were dead
You fooled us all
More buck less bang
When the verdict is returned
You will surely hang

Rock and roll your time has finally come
I am afraid you must die
Rock and roll your time has finally come
Now I’m afraid you must die

Rock and roll deserves to die
Rock and roll deserves to die

All of us have built a house of cards
In the eye of a storm
Charlatans all tattoos and no scars
Nothing real to perform
You will lose your head
When judgement is passed
Tied your colours
To a sinking galleon’s mast

Rock and roll your time has finally come
I am afraid you must die
Rock and roll your time has finally come
Now I’m afraid you must die

Deserves to die
Rock and roll deserves to die
Deserves to die
Rock and roll deserves to die

My oldest brother and I drove from Georgia back to Illinois one year in the 1980s for Christmas and on the way stopped for gas at a place with a Stuckeys attached. We bought a pecan log roll as a gag gift for the middle brother. He just laughed when he opened it. Then the next year. I got the Stuckeys pecan log roll from middle brother. I waited a couple of years before gifting it to the oldest brother. We carried on this way for over ten years. I have no idea where it is or if it finally got thrown away. The fruitcake discussion in the previous thread made me think of this.

The Darkness is a really great rock band. Classic arena rock. I’ve been a fan since “Permission to Land”, their debut album.

Needed to take a break - tons of work here with online teaching, which is good. But a lot of my students now have COVID-19 and pretty much all them are vaccinated (at least double-dose) and so far, no major complications with any of them.

Omicron really is a variant of concern and its development needs to be closely monitored. Best case scenario would be a high R0 and a vanishingly small CFR.

Reagan inherited a short recession that had begun to recede months into his presidency when he decided to demand fiscal conservatism…and drove the country into a sustained recession that saw UE reach levels only surpassed in the Great Recession decades later.

Clinton had not only an ongoing recession when he took office, but also the non-troversy of the “Travel Office scandal,” the disaster at Waco, and a whole lot of proto-MAGAts losing their little minds over the idea of raising taxes during a recession.

Obama inherited the Great Recession, which experts said in retrospect was blunted by the Recovery Act but still did not truly begin to ease up until the following year, with the remainder of his first year eaten up with Dem-on-Dem warfare over the ACA.

But yeah, apparently Biden’s low numbers are totally unprecedented and his presidency is all but over./////

Probably a good many of them. Carruth is eyeball deep in the yokel good ol’ boy network. He is chairman of the Second Amendment Coalition of Lubbock, among other reich wing activism.
Incidentally, LPD has identified the National Guard Center standoff suspect as Gene Solis, 48, of Lubbock, so probably not a current member of the Guard. During the initial chase, Solis drove to Hale Center, north of Lubbock, got involved in another chase, then ran into the armory and shot at officers. In 2009, a Hale Center police officer named Gene Solis, then age 35, resigned after being arrested for DWI.

A Gene Solis holds an interesting position in the right wing establishment in Lubbock, but I won’t mention which one since I haven’t confirmed that it is the same guy.

So I found this, and I think it’s a great insight into the lead singer. And the band. Defuses the incident.
I’m impressed.

around 1976 jethro tull played a concert in binghamton NY
i didn’t go
one of my roommates did
when he came back he told this

someone, probably a girl, threw a rose at ian anderson
it hit him in the face / eye
he immediately stopped playing and stopped the band
he fumed at the audience —
the phrase was “one of you fucking c**ts…”
then more rant, rant, rant.
then he said to the band, something like “bar 82”
they all just picked up right there and went on

my roommate told this story for days weeks - i think it was for three reasons

- one is he got to say c**t over and over
(i dont know whether Anderson meant it in the UK vernacular, or specifically a woman / that woman)
- he witnessed some of the showman mask come down and saw that actual man - ian anderson - even if just briefly
- he was a bit amazed at how exacting and expertly prepared they were as musicians….

Moroccan because of the spices: cumin, coriander, turmeric, allspice, cinnamon.

The “confusion” is that a medical doctor has a different opinion that the majority of medical experts, i.e. a perfectly normal thing that we encounter every day but which is somehow “news” if they have that opinion printed by the media.

Amusingly, the main theme of this op-ed is that the experts have been taking too long to push boosters as “full vaccination” and that’s caused needless deaths and injuries, which is totally contrary to all the BS “THEY RUSHED THE VACCINES!!!” bits that The Hill has published in the past.

Saw them at The Tower Theatre in Philly on the Aqualung Tour. 1971.
Fantastic band. Ian was a true showman. Fine voice and the band was tight.
They had one of the best openings I ever saw.
The stage was set with everything up. There was a few guys on stage with yellow slickers with hoodies and “STAFF” on the back.
They were moving around, touching this, checking that. A few more came out. Just the crew setting up the guitar and bass, checking the drums…………
Then the lights went out. Total darkness. 10 seconds later the opening riff of Aqualung burst out.
Drum riff.
LIGHTS!
Ian booms out “SITTING ON A PARK BENCH”
They were in the slickers all the while.
Grabbed everyone by surprise.
Great show. Better live than the album. Seen a lot of acts that did that. Better than studio.

Faux just going totally anti-vaxxer at this point, since the same logic can be carried forward to virtually any vaccine out there in the world. Since no vaccine is 100% effective and most do not wipe out the pathogen entirely in the bodies of the vaccinated, then there’s no point to getting vaccinated because you could still possibly get infected or pass the infection on to others.

The lyrics in a lot of their songs still rings true today. Ian is a poet it seems. When he would riff on his flute and stand on one leg looking like a lunatic…..

Jethro Tull - Too Old To Rock’n’ Roll (Supersonic, 27.3.1976)

Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll, Too Young to Die
Jethro Tull
The old rocker wore his hair too long
Wore his trouser cuffs too tight
Unfashionable to the end
Drank his ale too light
Death’s head belt buckle, yesterday’s dreams
The transport caf’, prophet of doom
Ringing no change in his double-sewn seams
In his post-war-babe gloom
Now he’s too old to rock and roll
But he’s too young to die
Yes he’s too old to rock and roll
But he’s too young to die
He once owned a Harley Davidson
And a Triumph Bonneville
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
Prays that he always will
But he’s the last of the blue blood’s greaser boys
And all his mates are doing time
Married with three kids up by the ring road
Sold their souls straight down the line
And some of them own little sports cars
And meet at the tennis club do’s
For drinks on a Sunday, work on Monday
They’ve thrown away their blue suede shoes
Now they’re too old to rock and roll
And they’re too young to die
Yes they’re too old to rock and roll
And they’re too young to die
So the old rocker gets out his bike
To make a ton before he takes his leave
Up on the A1 by Scotch Corner
Just like it used to be
And as he flies, tears in his eyes
His wind-whipped words echo the final take
And he hits the trunk road doing around a hundred and twenty
With no room left to brake
And he was too old to rock and roll
And he was too young to die
No he was too old to rock and roll
And he was too young to die
No, you’re never too old to rock and roll
If you’re too young to die
And no you’re never too old to rock and roll
But he was too young to die

Speaking about the three firearms-related resolutions that will be considered tonight, Carruth said, “Many people view this as a type of incrementalism. I mean, they’re chipping away at our Constitutional rights, little by little. Not to mention the sheer fact that, I mean it’s a flat out Hillary Clinton style gun ban that they’re trying to impose upon the citizens of Lubbock.” Carruth continued with, “They do not have the right to deny citizens the ability to protect themselves in there.”

It’s 2021 and we’re witnessing an obstetrician arguing that a 9 year old child can be forced to be an walking incubator for her rapist’s offspring because medical science says it’s “safe.”

We’re just one degree of separation at this point from the countries that we’re supposedly morally superior to because we don’t force the child to marry their rapist to maintain the family’s “honor.”

Interrupted by a guy who rushed over and started cussing out the bass player for talking to us. One of the biggest assholes I’ve ever encountered.

Moldea’s theory makes perfect sense. There’s nothing flashy about it, or any kind of hidden irony in burying Hoffa’s remains - just your classic, run-of-the-mill Mafia body disposal.

The only objection I have is that mafia hitmen would not want to transport a high profile target any farther than they had to, alive or dead. They would know that every cop, reporter and bored bystander along the way would be looking for him. I still think Hoffa is planted within a small radius of the parking lot where he disappeared.

I know the whole things asinine but they don’t follow this through

who would be responsible for the baby (the newborn, not the 9 year old)
Medical care, doctor visits
Food

Everything

Because if the 9 yo isn’t , then we have stepped into a kind of hell

When a beautiful gem—such as the letter below—comes to our attention, we are amazed all over again at how relevant Sparky’s words are today (I have said that I continually find comic strips that could have been written for today’s audience).

We contacted the author, Joel Lipton, whose sister had posted the letter on Facebook. Joel said that he wrote the letter to Mr. Schulz when he was 10 years old in 5th grade. It was 1970, and his memory of the assignment was for the students to write a letter to someone they admired and ask the question, “What do you think makes a good citizen?”.

True, but it depends on how quickly Hoffa’s body was disposed of. If it was later that evening, let’s say, no one would be the wiser. Hoffa wasn’t reported as missing until 7 am the following day (31 July 1975) so if he was taken to the landfill, put it in a 55-gallon drum and promptly buried - well, that’s that.

Davy Crockett
Bear hunting was seminally integrated into Crockett’s image. The “Ballad of Davy Crockett” (the theme song of the Disney series) mentions that Davy “kilt him a b’ar when he was only three.” While this is likely not the case, it captures the essence of his larger-than-life reputation.

My friend Luke had a beat to death acoustic guitar and carved;
“Luke kilt a barre on this here guitar” on the back.

I told my dad about the story and we both agreed that it doesn’t really matter where or if Hoffa is ever found, as at this point so much time has passed that the revelation would end up being pub trivia within a month or less. Remember when the final identity of “Deep Throat” was revealed? Good point - even if Hoffa’s body was dug up tomorrow afternoon, it would be just a footnote in the history books or, as you said, a pub trivia quiz answer.

Here’s an interview with Dan Moldea on the subject, with AP footage of the place where Hoffa is allegedly buried. Interestingly, the FBI did in fact search the area previously but found nothing, but then again, it certainly wouldn’t be the first time human remains weren’t found right off the bat.

In any event, it would be a coda to one of the most notorious disappearances of the 20th Century.

It was the standard GQP “non-apology apology”: Issuing a broad non-apology rather than to the person insulted personally, putting the onus on the person they insulted to accept their “apology,” and whining about how “unnecessary” it was to call attention to the insults in the first place.

I guess it’s time to cancel their passports and block the roads.

A war?
Well ok, then. Call in the B-52s.

In this case, we can probably settle for economic sanctions on Oroville Oligarchs.

Each bag has 1 cup in it. Just toss into a pan of boiling water to thaw/reheat.

Nice! Now get yourself an Anova immersion heater for sous vide. Buy a pack of steaks and season them individually and seal and freeze. When you want a steak dinner, put the bag in the water at 130 degrees (138 if you like med rare, 145 if med well) and leave it there for a few hours - when you’re ready to eat, take it out of the bag, dab it with a paper towel to remove excess moisture, and then sear it on each side for about thirty seconds.

In the running discussion on pro-lifers, consider how “crisis pregnancy centers” currently function and you’ll get a picture of what’s going to happen next.

If you’re pregnant out of wedlock and up against a wall because you don’t have a support structure or money, you’ll get help but the pressure will be to give away your kid through a religious agency that sell kids. After that’s done they have no use for you and the stigma of pre-marital sex and single motherhood means either you’re pushed out of society or you’re pulled in by another religious institution that provides halfway-house services.

I use a Instant Pot with the Sous Vide function. I do a wide variety of meat that way.

Also, and please let me know how you like this - poach eggs - (you can do as many as you want at the same time) in sous vide mode. (145 x 50 min)…then crack them into simmering water for 30-45 seconds to firm the outside and you’ll be cracking perfectly poached eggs over your toast/salad/whatevs. The ones you don’t eat keep in the fridge for a week or two and simmer when you want a poached egg…It’s my favorite recipe (maybe no-soak beans are a tie)…

They never really “pay”…they just get told they’re shit and they sit round and sulk for a generation or two saying, “Yeah…well…” and then return to the same assholes they always were.

If Covid wipes out Oroville I hope the Oroville Indian tribes turn that lake they have into a casino and golf mecca…

Sounds interesting. Though the last few times I had poached eggs, I wasn’t really all that impressed with them. I usually do over easy. Sunny side up if I want to mix them into my hash browns.

re: #177 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Pre-poaching them in the shell helps them retain their egg shape. The little bit of loose white floats away in the water when you crack them, but the rest of the egg stays as it should look. Makes for great presentation. Going to pick up some more confit duck gizzards and make a salad with poached egg on top now…or when I get home from this long ass weekend visit.
