Here is the 1st counterpoint of a series of 10 !
Each one of them follows a specific idea over 2 (and sometimes 3) voices and travels freely among various keys. The main challenge is to find the right fingerings for you to be able to hold the different voices and make them stand out and respond to each other.
I hope you will enjoy playing & listening to them as much as I had fun composing and recording them !

So back while I was in Memphis, my father got it a load of hay for my stepmother’s last two goats. While he and a couple of friends were putting it up, one of them heard a sound in an old unused dog house. There was a tiny calico kitten in there.

My stepmother was all “Oh we can’t have another cat”. Yeah. We all know how this ends - piles of toys, a cat tree for her to lounge in the sun on, etc.

Now that she’s realized she’s too big to sleep in my dad’s slipper, she has a new favorite place…

I’m in a 5000+ company. Someone high up did a send to all, and then someone replied all, and other people replied all, then people replied all to get people to stop replying to all. It took nearly two hours for IT to kill it.

With all the articles of priests and pastors covering up sexual abuse, it’s good to read one about a pastor who did the right thing right away.

ECSO: Pensacola man arrested after telling pastor he had sex with young girl (Pensacola News-Journal)

A Pensacola man was arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a young girl hundreds of times over three years after he reportedly told a local pastor about his actions and the pastor alerted authorities.

Robert Joel Cota, 31, was arrested Sunday and charged with sexual battery on a victim 12 or younger, child abuse, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and at least one other sex-related offenses.

The church and pastor are unnamed in the report.

Crime Online links to an article noting the man was previously reported to the Pensacola Police by the girl’s mother on suspicion of abusing her daughter and pointing a gun at her multiple times in 2020.

WEAR-TV (Pensacola) reports he is being held in the county jail on six hundred charges of sexual assault and six hundred charges of incest. His bond is set at $3million.

Let’s talk about tweets, Russia, and that plan….

So this Beau posting is about a Russian plan, through social media, to radicalize Black Americans and make them an internal problem that could split the US. (he compares it to the way the US supported to Kurds, to try to fuck with Iraq and Syria). Using racial tension as a wedge issue to create unrest, make some areas want to break off, etc.

What I found really interesting, maybe he’ll address this in a later video, is the plan seems to have instead accidentally(?) really radicalized white conservatives. Black people didn’t fall for it, but the MAGAs did. Black people’s response to racial issues seems to be peaceful marches, and a lot of scholarship. Books, books and more books, plus documentaries and magazine articles and speeches and voter registration and… lots of non-violent activism. It’s the white supremacists who are getting violent about it.

One thing to always keep in mind is that reporting of both tests and deaths are partial.

It is the job of epidemiologists to figure out what really happened. And this can take years.

There has been some reporting of preliminary calculations of excess deaths in a country, compared to pre-pandemic norms.

But even these depend upon how well deaths have been reported in the past.

Even today, there will be many people who died, typically older, for which an autopsy is never performed.

Walk-in testing has been further restricted in the Nebraska Panhandle.

There are now only three places to get a walk-in test, two in Scottsbluff and one in Gering (which is adjacent to Scottsbluff).

The various county hospitals will do a test but those are all cash on the barrel head.

For the Panhandle last seven days:

Case rate: 175/100,000 (CDC risk factor HIGH)
Most by age: 20-29, then 40-49
Percentage fully vaccinated: 40%
Total cases: 14,172 (17% of the population)
Total deaths: 232

For my county last seven days:
Most by age: 80+, then 70-79
CDC Risk Factor: LOL
Total cases: 903 (18.6% of the population)

pphd.org

My wife suggests instead of shopping in Sterling, Colorado to avoid all the non-maskers and unvaccinated, we go instead to FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyo. for the Commissary and Exchange. The Air Force has mandatory vaccination and masks.

I’m willing to meet them halfway: They can enjoy the freedom to be bigoted assholes, but they will do so without federal support of any kind. Not a single federal dollar will go to their organizations and they will not be able to participate in federal programs. If they are not happy with that, then they can abide by the same rules that everybody else does under the 1A. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it, padre.

That’s what they are complaining about. Mr. Becerra’s office promulgated new rules revoking religious group waivers saying they cannot discriminate on adoptions by legally-married LGBT couples. The Bishop of Tyler, Texas is complaining they can’t have tax-free bigotry.

As for the Catechism itself, that says religious liberty is a natural right, but adds it has inherent limits and should be determined for the common good as defined by civil authority.

So Bishop Strickland probably ought to read his own Catechism.

“More brokenness from so[-]called Catholics,” Strickland told Fox News. He added that “maybe we should send him a Catechism.”

So Bishop Strickland probably ought to read his own Catechism.

I wanna tell him in the most condescending, “talking down to a small child” tone I can manage that there’s no right in the Constitution to discriminate against others, so what he’s demanding is he be given special rights and privileges, which is not how things work and he should know that after decades of lecturing LGBT folks about how allowing them to marry would be doing the exact same thing.

More reporting from Seeing Red Nebraska about the gun superstore 88 Tactical (the 88 is intentional) on the west side of Omaha.

Editorial Note: Seeing Red Nebraska only rarely publishes anonymous contributions. In this case, international sources have provided us with the following, and have reasonable safety concerns that necessitate anonymity.

Seeing Red Nebraska has previously written about the neo-Nazi affinities of Omaha’s 88 Tactical, and about its strange relationship with the Bolsonaro regime in Brazil, including the fact that close friends of the Bolsonaro sons are on staff at the Nebraska shooting range.

Since that coverage was published, international activists concerned with the Bolsonaro regime and its fascist aspirations have dug more deeply into the strange network of relationships among 88 Tactical employees, the Trumps, the Bolsonaros, and the high-ranking aides and far-right propagandists who serve the two families. In this piece, our contributors simply seek to reveal connections among Eduardo Bolsonaro, his aide Julia Zanatta, her ex-boyfriend and 88 Tactical employee Tony Eduardo, the 2018 attempted assassination of Jair Bolsonaro, and far right propagandists Steve Bannon and Olavo de Carvalho, both of whom are currently under legal scrutiny by their respective governments for their roles in provoking far right insurrection.

(more, with additional information provided by people in Brazil to Seeing Red Nebraska)

That is the be-all, end-all of this “messaging” BS: For 4+ years, being a political journalist was as effortless (and as useful) as dynamite fishing. You woke up in the morning and there would be a fresh steaming pile of shit on the WH lawn. Or if it was a slow day, you checked your voicemail because there was bound to be somebody in the WH willing to “leak” a story. Or if you were Maggie Haberman, you just relied upon your status as the “Trump Whisperer” to tell folks in a long column what you thought he was doing/looking to do/had already done.

The belief that Biden and the Democrats have a messaging problem for which there is a messaging solution is not just wrong, but contradicts everything we’ve seen and know about politics.

Our press and broadcast news networks, even the ones who seemed opposed to Trump, actually loved him: he was a ready-made media star who offered them a 24/7 political/family/crime/scandal reality show, starting with a morning tweet to get everyone outraged, followed by reports of his associates & colleagues being indicted/charged, regular rallies and speeches, or shots of him waddling to and from his golf cart along with his personal reaction to whatever Fox as featuring that day.

I usually do my food shopping in the morning because it is quiet in the market. Today I got to the market and the anti-vaxer was there. For the most part she ignored me. When I got into line she pushed her cart right up to mine as if to push me. Fortunately my favorite cashier was there and made things a little easier. Keep in mind this is the same woman who took my cart full of my stuff and started to walk around the store with it as though it were hers. Normally she shops on Saturday but for some reason she came today. Next Sunday we will see if she is there then I might change my shopping day again.

Zero COVID strategy…now why didn’t we think of that? Also, as I scrolled down the chart, Botswana, one of the newly banned countries because of Omicron, has a 464 cases in the last seven days…less than 70/day.

Maybe because China’s “zero covid” policy means they test people all the time, and anyone found to be positive is picked up and locked away in a small room (they do get to watch tv and keep their phones) with twice daily tests (oral and anal) until they test negative two or three times (can’t remember). Be careful what you ask for.

Also, Botswana (where the first omicron case occurred) has a total population of about 2.5 million, with one large city of less than half a million people. My guess is that that’s where most of the cases and all the recording of cases is happening. Whether that number is a serious matter or not depends on whether or not it’s increasing.

Edited to change “positive” to “negative” above. D’oh!

Blues Traveler - Hook (Official Video)

It doesn’t matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I’ll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I’ve said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don’t matter who you are
If I’m doing my job then it’s your resolve that breaks
Because the Hook brings you back
I ain’t tellin’ you no lie
The Hook brings you back
On that you can rely
There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don’t mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
Was that Hook brings you back
I ain’t tellin’ you no lie
The Hook brings you back
On that you can rely
Suck it in suck it in suck it in
If you’re Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you’ll win
And then begin
To see
What you’re doing to me this MTV is not for free
It’s so PC it’s killing me
So desperately I sing to thee
Of love
Sure but also of rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can’t keep these feelings on the shelf
I’ve tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I’ve got too much pride inside
To hide or slide
I’ll do as I’ll decide and let it ride until I’ve died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute diddys
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all your cities to the ground
I’ve found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day. Hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That’s really all this was
And when I’m feeling stuck and need a buck
I don’t rely on luck because
The Hook brings you back
I ain’t tellin’ you no lie
The Hoooooook
On that you can rely

So this is actually a major driver of US vaccine hesitancy. If people’s only experience with a for-profit medical system meant to find secret ways to cheat them, SURPRISE! Some people who’ve been burned will be wary of engaging with a suddenly free form of service

Nice.

France is inducting Josephine Baker — Missouri-born cabaret dancer, French World War II spy and civil rights activist — into its Pantheon, the first Black woman honored in the final resting place of France’s most revered luminaries.

On Tuesday, a coffin carrying soils from the U.S., France and Monaco — places where Baker made her mark — will be deposited inside the domed Pantheon monument overlooking the Left Bank of Paris. Her body will stay in Monaco, at the request of her family.

French President Emmanuel Macron decided on her entry into the Pantheon, responding to a petition. In addition to honoring an exceptional figure in French history, the move is meant to send a message against racism and celebrate U.S.-French connections.

Good morning!

That cat reminds me of how I woke up and decided I needed to go to the bathroom before going back to sleep, which I did. In that brief interval, my tuxedo kitty Nicki got herself up from wherever she was and snuggled down just south of my pillow, right where my shoulders would have been. I looked at her for a moment, decided I didn’t care about the cat’s feelings, started to lay down again and tapped Nicki on the back leg to get a move on. She got the hint.

Then I had a weird dream where I was at a church, inside, where it was “Hawaiian shirt Sunday” and I stood out because I was wearing a striped shirt over a grey t-shirt. And then someone near me made a homophobic remark and I kinda lost it yelling at them. Then (still in my dream, mind you) I realized I wasn’t supposed to be arguing with these people and most certainly wasn’t supposed to be IN the church, so I made my way to the exit. And then I fell back asleep again.

No, I didn’t go protesting this morning because I’m still on call, but trying to figure out what that all means, which probably nothing at all, just my brain shuffling shit around for better storage. *snort*

American healthcare also says,
“Oh, you have a new chronic condition! Sucks to be you!”
“Have you tried not being sick?”
“My premiums are up because of people like you!”
“I’m your doctor, and I can ruin your life with a note in your chart!”
“You’re marginalized? Good. FU Got Mine!”

I haven’t seen “they might charge me later” on any of the conspiracies about the vaccine.

It is more like “it is all a government money-making scam hoax”

(which it was to an extent under Trump)

There was a scandal involving German ministers of Parliament whose private firms profited from selling masks to government institutions that led to the change of government in September.

We had similar problems here in Czech Republic - the former Minister of Health conveniently set up a vaccination business late last autumn and the former Minister of the Interior set up a shell company to purchase facemasks and N95 respirators. These matters are being investigated.

Little wonder that vaccine skepticism is so rampant here.

There were calls to ban that song as it provided teenagers with a convenient excuse for immoral behavior.

Video

It’s not new either, I know Dugin wrote about it in Foundations of Geopolitics.

For some reason this reminded me of the time we convinced the wholesome church youth leader to play “Cecilia” on his guitar during a sing along. He apparently never actually had listened to to lyrics because his face got red and he stopped playing when we got to the “Making love in the afternoon with Cecilia / Up in my bedroom (making love) / I got up to wash my face / When I come back to bed / Someone’s taken my place”. We, of course, kept going and sang even louder.
