Also in the article, a note for editors: don’t rely on spellcheck:

“…Black people are the most murderous group in America by rate,” Ms Owens said.
That has been disputed by FBI figures from 2017 showing how most homicides in the US are interracial. Nor does the claim consider the fact that Black Americans are incinerated at higher rates than their white counterparts.”

CL’d on the last thread.

(Saying that makes me miss her).

Due to my health issues and concerns about my immunocomprised daughter and my granddaughter, I’ve hardly left the house in the last year and a half and always mask.

But Mrs Cranky has been going stir crazy and really needed to get out.

So for the first time in forever months, we went to a restaurant for lunch. On the plus side, masks were required unless you were eating, the quests were seated at least 10 feet apart and there were clear plastic partitions between tables to provide improved isolation.

The restaurant was an interesting place. They have an IPA (and actually grow their own hops), most vegetables are grown there, they cure their own meats, etc.

Exceptions were noted on the menu.

On one hand, it felt great to be out, enjoying a good meal, pretending like life is returning to normal.

While being very aware that it isn’t. Sigh.

The things we do for love.

something that’s always sat funny with me regarding any adopted food regimen or diet is trying to reproduce foods you’ve otherwise decided not to eat

i get the moral, religious or ethical reasoning behind food choices (as opposed to strictly health)

and there are legitimate substitutes for things

but why cant I simulate X if i can make it with these ingredients instead of those - yeah sometimes it works, other times i dont see the point in trying

meanwhile i have a kick ass vegan mac and cheese recipe (from the low cholesterol days before atorvastatin). it’s got not dairy at all and it’s not really cheese - but it’s creamy and tasty

shallot, potatoes, carrots, onion, water, cashews, salt, garlic, earth balance, mustard, lemon juice, pepper

i think im just rambling here

Go hot. 425. Also boil them for about 5 minutes first, then toss in a little oil, then throw on a sheet pan in the oven. Shake ‘em around after 6-8 minutes, pull out after about 15.

The zombie apocalypse has started. I know zombie eyes when I see them.

While the car was moving, Stilwell “reached forward and proceeded to choke the victim from behind,” according to a sheriff’s deputy. As seen above, Stilwell initially choked Hassey with two hands before wrapping an arm around his throat.

As Hassey sought to pull over the car, Stilwell “managed to crawl forward onto the center console…and bite the victim deeply on the neck drawing blood.” She then scratched Hassey across the chest, “causing a large red in color mark with traces of blood visible.”

Today, a friend and I took our weekly hour walk through the neighborhood and chatted as usual about all types of issues, including politics. What upsets her most of all is that voting rights are not #1 on the agenda — more important than BBB. She feels that the failure to make this the sole priority will lead to disaster in 2022 - that BBB can be deferred but voting cannot. Obviously, since BBB doesn’t require any changes to Senate procedures to get adopted, it should be a simpler task. Of course both BBB and voting rights require the agreement of Manchin and Sinema, and they both seem locked in against changes to the filibuster. I cannot really disagree with her concern, because if we don’t deal with voting, we will have decades in the wilderness with GOP voter suppression, disenfranchisement, and gerrymandering.

Residents also faced consequences when they “acted against the Bible” including having their food and water withheld or restricted to just rice and beans or being forced to do manual labor like dragging chains or breaking boulders with a small hammer, the lawsuit alleges.

According to the men, residents would be physically restrained by supervisors who would hold the boys down and hog tie them using zip-ties.

Supervisors would verbally abuse the boys by telling them that if they tried to leave the facility they would be excommunicated from the church or excommunicate them from their families, the lawsuit alleges.

re manchin and sinema - electoral-vote.com

A recent piece from David Smith, who is the lead Washington correspondent for The Guardian, suggests an explanation for the senators’ behavior: It’s all about the Benjamins. Specifically, the senators are raking in the bucks for their campaign war chests, a development largely fueled by the generous support of right-wing donors. Through Q3 of this year, Manchin had collected $3.3 million in donations, as compared to $230,000 over the same timeframe last year. Sinema’s haul as of Q3 2021 is $2.6 million, which is a far sight better than the $1 million she brought in during the first three quarters of 2020.

This is not definitive, but it’s certainly enough that plenty of Washington watchdogs are tossing out the c-word (corruption). The famously corrupt 19th century politician Simon Cameron once declared that “An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought.” Given this month’s to-do list, we should get some pretty good evidence as to whether Manchin and Sinema have been bought, and will stay bought.

Indefinite suspension looks like. Not terminated (yet)

CNN said Tuesday that it has suspended Chris Cuomo “indefinitely” after new documents released this week indicated that the anchor was more intimately involved than previously known in helping his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, craft a defense amid a flurry of sexual misconduct allegations.

“The New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits Monday that shed new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense,” a CNN spokesperson said Tuesday evening. “The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions.”

“When Chris admitted to us that he had offered advice to his brother’s staff, he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly,” the spokesperson continued. “But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second.”

“However, these documents point to a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew,” the spokesperson added. “As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”

How is veganism a nutjob belief? It may be eccentric, but favoring a plant-based diet doesn’t seem as though it’s designed to cause widespread harm to society, especially given the problems of climate change and overfishing, which may require radical changes to our eating habits.

Same with me.

Vegans have starved their children and carnivorous pets like cats (children should not be raised on a vegan diet).

They have to “recruit you to their lifestyle” (unlike Teh Geyh, veganism is a choice).

While it’s anecdotal, I have never yet met a vegan who doesn’t tell you within the first few minutes (forcefully) that they are vegan, and you’re a terrible person if you are not.

Some claims made by vegans are entirely false, such as the whole world can be vegan (there is not enough arable land for that) or that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions (false, all agriculture, even gardens, release greenhouse gasses from turning the soil to grow crops and vegetables).

There might be vegans around here. If someone got belligerent about it, well, there’s a lot of canyons and crevasses in the Sandhills where you might never be found… .

Same with me.

While its anecdotal, I have never yet met a vegan who doesn’t tell you within the first few minutes (forcefully) that they are vegan, and you’re a terrible person if you are not.

Isn’t this extremely dumb in a thread where someone has implied for the 1st time that she’s a vegan?

Income tax is progressive. Consumption taxes invariably end up being regressive because the poorest folks end up spending a greater portion of their income on things that are caught up in the consumption taxes.

It’s another scam by right wingers to shift burdens to those least able to afford them.

I am not a vegan but one of my nephews is. I have my own idiosyncrasies in eating — my BIL always complains that he cannot keep track of food on my “never touch” list, except that he knows that I refuse red meat. re: #81 Backwoods_Sleuth

MrBWS just said that the area Kroger store is playing music from when we were in high school.

I went to the area Kroger-owned store I used to work at to get boostered. I was going to go to the outside walk-up window they have, but the sign said it was closed due to being short-staffed. So I went in and got in line, and waited about half an hour, and when it was my turn, I said ‘Moderna booster, please’. He told me they weren’t doing any injections because they were short-staffed. They have always been short-staffed. I started working there before the pandemic, and they were short-staffed.

So I rode my bike to the other place listed within a mile of my zip code that was doing vaxxes (by appointment). It was a dental office. The receptionist asked me whether I had an appointment. I said no, I’d like to make one. She asked whether for dental attention or a vax. When I said the latter, she asked whether I would like that right now. Within 10 minutes, I was in a room with a chair, a dentist, and a needle.

I said, ‘Hurts half as much, right?’ He said, ‘Well, it is half the dose…’ Then, ‘Ready? On three. One, two, three.’ That’s gotta be the worst way to give a shot. And it hurt. I told him it hurt twice as much, and he said, ‘All I have left is these big needles. They gotta send me some more smaller needles.’ That may have been a good thing I have a mask on moment.

My arm hurt until I got out the door. By the time I was riding my bike, I forgot about it. I am boosted.

It’s another scam by right wingers to shift burdens to those least able to afford them.

What’s most annoying is the failure to consider the “other” income tax — namely FICA taxes — which also are regressive. It’s unfair to look at federal tax burden by income and ignore that tax. When it comes to states, though, most use sales taxes as the primary tax. The Illinois income tax is a flat 5% with a low personal exemption; efforts to make it progressive, led by our billionaire governor, failed because lobbyists persuaded voters that average people would bear the burden. Retirement income is excluded from income (pensions, social security, IRA/401(k) withdrawals), so a boost to us elderly.

Here’s all you need to know about Oz.
Washington’s fault? Then that would mean Trump, no?
Per Philly Inquirer cut and paste.

“COVID has shown us that our system is broken,” Oz said in the video. “We lost too many lives, too many jobs and too many opportunities because Washington, D.C. got it wrong. It took away our freedom without making us safer and tried to kill our spirit and our dignity.”

A longtime New Jersey resident who grew up in Wilmington, Del., he earned his medical and business degrees at the University of Pennsylvania after graduating from Harvard University. Oz registered to vote last December in Bryn Athyn, Montgomery County. He is living there while renting his in-laws’ home, according to a campaign aide.

“There’s carpetbagging, then there is this guy trying to buy a U.S. Senate seat in a state he doesn’t live in, doesn’t know, and can’t fight for effectively,” said a spokesman for a Super PAC supporting another GOP candidate, Montgomery County developer Jeff Bartos. “Oz doesn’t know the first thing about conservative Pennsylvania values and primary voters are about to find out how out of touch he is.”

While new to elective politics, Oz he has interviewed Trump and was named to the former president’s council of sports, fitness, and nutrition. He has hired a team of political veterans that include the agency that created the former president’s television ads and was scheduled to appear Tuesday night on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show to discuss his candidacy. Oz has long known Trump, his aide said.

Parasite.

45 minutes from me.

Human trafficking lawsuit alleges Pa. Mennonite Church subjected boys, young men to forced labor

A *huge* part of that is due to our *thing* of letting parents nearly completely control their children until they are 18 or get emancipated. This allows parents to send kids off to these shitty schools, which are all over the country, where the kids are tortured and treated like slaves and it’s perfectly legal if they’re minors and their parents signed them in.

It’s NOT legal if they were over 18 and if they were not prisoners. Yay 13th amendment, separating out the prisoners from the benefits of emancipation. //// Given this is a lawsuit, I suspect the current plaintiffs were underage when they were forced to labor.

There are some things that just cause me to completely lose my shit, and abuse of children is at the top of the list. There’s too much LEGAL child abuse in this country because we have this whole “parents own their kids” thing and “spare the rod and spoil the child.” /sorry not sorry for the rant.

A forty-two year-old bodybuilder from the United Kingdom has died of Covid-19. His twin sister allowed The Guardian to print his story of how he fell for the propaganda from Faceplant “friends” over that of health and government officials.

As he fell into the antivax rabbit hole, he then started making trips to Florida to promote those views as well.

The life and tragic death of John Eyers - a fitness fanatic who refused the vaccine (today)

He did triathlons, bodybuilding and mountain climbing and became sceptical of the Covid jab. Then, at 42, he contracted the virus

The only thing tragic about it is the propagandists who spread this nonsense. The outcome was entirely predictable.

My father passed away in 2015. I have a racist stepmother who would’ve fit in better with Dad’s family than Mom did. I don’t have anything to do with her, either.

I escaped by getting married at 23 and moving at 25 to Texas for several years, then relocating 6-8 hours away from them at 29. Eventually, we moved to New Mexico when I was 38.

My youngest brother escaped to Southwestern Virginia, then Indiana, then out here to New Mexico.

Our middle brother - who I often describe as a cross between Earl Hickey from “My Name is Earl” and Michael Kelso from “That 70’s Show” - never really escaped and I wouldn’t wish his life on anyone. He has to deal with our stepmother on a regular basis.

Mom died in 1996 in an accident on a trip to the Grand Canyon that also took out her father, and injured her two sisters and my father, but they recovered.

Good for you. Sorry we can’t save ‘em all.

re: #148 jaunte

There’s been a lot of tone policing against people going onto the social media accounts to tell people who follow antivaxxers why they really died.

That usually results in the account being wiped of all content (or the page being set to private), partly because those comments debunk the conservative faith, and partly because antivax posts interfere with the GoFundMe account which is almost inevitable.

If Faceborg and Twitler won’t kick off the antivaxxers, then “crowdsourcing” forcing that account to shut down to remove the propaganda might be the only way to do it.

Daystar Television has now wiped their Faceplant account clean after they were relentlessly hammered for lying to their readers about how their leader died.

That reminds me of the National Religious Broadcasters firing their spokesman Daniel Darling for saying he wanted his listeners to get vaccinated.

Daniel Darling, an evangelical author and the spokesman for NRB (National Religious Broadcasters), spoke out this month about his decision to get the COVID-19 vaccine in an op-ed in USA Today and a segment on MSNBC.

As of Friday, his remarks cost him his job with the ministry.

Darling was fired from NRB this week when he refused to sign a statement saying his pro-vaccine messaging amounted to insubordination, a source told CT on his behalf.

In a statement, Darling said he was “sad and disappointed that [his] time at NRB has come to a close.”

I was in a Twitter conversation with a woman who bragged about her relationship with her kids, “WE NOT FRIENDS”.

I mentioned, in thirty years, her kids will tell HER, “WE NOT FRIENDS”.

It’s only appropriate.

I heard from one of my brothers, when I was still in contact with the middle one, that our childhood barber was shitting upon me for not attending Dad’s funeral. My youngest brother flew out from here as my representative, because I was just not up to dealing with the funeral, reconciling past traumatic experiences, and putting on a pleasant facade in front of a stepfamily who had very much rubbed me the wrong way on previous holiday visits.

Dad had tried to make amends after Mom died, but it was much too late. The damage was done long ago.

How is what they did to Darling not cancel culture?

Well, the thing I always remind myself is that conservatives places hierarchy as paramount, so meaning is conditional on position.

Cancel culture is when someone they deem of lesser position engages in criticizing or shaming someone they should not—demanding or extract consequences, even if that only amounts to embarrassment—because it is not part of their role in their lesser position to be saying such things.

When someone in a higher position uses criticism and shame to bring someone lesser to heel, that’s the natural order of the world…and conservatives are axiomatically within the upper half of the pyramid.

I posted this to Facebook with that video:

Did you hear about the shooting at the school in Michigan today? Did you blow it off?

Do you remember going through that when you were a kid? Because I don’t. We didn’t have to, because people didn’t think guns were toys and playthings and status symbols and things to be used as threats on our neighbors and classmates and how you ended an argument.

Watch the video in the attached tweet of the shooter trying to con the kids into coming out. Luckily the kids didn’t buy it, but why should they even have to consider this? They shouldn’t have to worry about guns being in their school. They shouldn’t have to worry if they have barricaded the door enough and if the shooter will pass their room by or shoot into it, or if that person on the outside is actually a cop or the shooter.

Why are we in a world where kids have to deal with this? This wasn’t the way it worked when I was a kid, and the classrooms in my elementary school opened to the outside, and my high school was a set of buildings on a campus, not one big building like they are now. Why are they having to deal with this when other forms of crime are at half the level they were when we were kids?

Why? Because way too many adults are selfish and can only think about themselves. “My guns! You will not take away my guns. And if you try, you will find out what being on the wrong end of one means.” And the kids are hearing that, and coming to believe that’s how you end an argument, or a breakup, or to prove you’re better than someone else.

It’s time we treat guns the way we used to. Back when they were for hunting. Back to when you didn’t settle an argument with one (when they tried that in the Wild West, sheriffs like Wyatt Earp banned guns from their towns). My grandfather kept his in a display case, and we didn’t really worry about it being misused because he took them seriously and you didn’t cross him. Yes, people kept guns in their trucks, but they didn’t walk into a store with them. They weren’t toys.

And you know what adults do? They realize that they can’t have everything they want, especially if it costs others. There are far too many toy guns, guns that are playthings, like the AR-15 and similar guns, that aren’t guns you take seriously, they’re guns you buy to to threaten others with, to play a game where you get to be king and others live in fear. And we had those before, and like Tommy guns, we need to remove them from society (like the NRA at the time agreed with).

This is how adults are supposed to act. They’re not supposed to be so selfish that kids die.

Incompetent cops are everywhere.

If you do David Grossman’s police training, this is exactly what you should do.

It’s not that cops are fucking up on an individual basis, it’s that there both a culture and an infrastructure that sustains this. Each cop punished does not change the larger system because, internally, this is seen as normal and good. It’s the equivalent of the Catholic Church’s scandals: the perps live inside a world where it’s perfectly reasonable to be shocked and offended at the implication that the same thing happening over and over represents a problem…it’s not the right of anyone outside the group to judge.

As I’ve been saying for awhile, America’s been cloaking a discussion in the norms of “who is allowed to kill whom, when, with how much impunity” as a matter of the 2nd Amendment, an article that contains very little about use of lethal force. This is just the leading edge.

I don’t have a link for this, just reports from Reddit, but a few things came out of the voir dire in Josh Duggar’s child sexual abuse material possession trial today:

1) According to an in person witness, 52 of the 60 potential jurors showed up for voir dire. Given the way voir dire was going (not well, apparently a Duggar in law was summoned, among other things), I suspect the marshals will be out rousting the missing eight into the courtroom. Also, the judge was questioning potential jurors in chambers, hmmm.

2) Jill Duggar Dillon, who married a guy named Derrick who was an accountant at Mall*Wart HQ, who then sponged off the largesse of his TV family until he bashed a transgender teen and got kicked off the TV show, well, Jill was announced as one of the witnesses in the trial. Jill was one of the Duggar daughters who was molested by Josh as a girl.

3) Also, a woman named Bobye Holt, who it is alleged knew that Josh was molesting his sisters from age 12, she is another of the named witneses. The witnesses were listed in open court after (I think) it became clear that Arkansas family trees are more like bushes. (Hello, both sides of my family, great grandparent generation, moved from Arkansas to Oklahoma around the turn of the 20th century. Both sides. In the same county. And why yes, there was a discussion about Mom and Dad being cousins in 1959. Probably not but hard to say.)

4) Jill Duggar also apparently has ditched the crunchy curly dark hair so beloved of her father, Jim Bob, and dyed her hair blonde. I have not found a picture, but this is not an unknown thing in these trials involving religious types. One of Warren Jeffs’ “wives” (escapee), she dyed her hair blond and wore a shocking red dress to court when she testified. That’s because Warren taught that red was a color reserved for Jesus and banned it. So I could see Jill dyeing her hair.

Same with me.

Vegans have starved their children and carnivorous pets like cats (children should not be raised on a vegan diet).

Children need protein to build their growing bodies. And now I will shout for everyone in the back:

CATS ARE OBLIGATE CARNIVORES AND MUST HAVE MEAT IN THEIR DIET. A VEGAN DIET WILL KILL YOUR CAT.

But we all knew that already, right? I certainly know it every time I walk downstairs and that obligate carnivore who runs my household is alternately meowing/purring up a storm, hoping for meat.

A NYTimes column discussed women, such as Savita Halappanavar, who died because abortions were illegal and doctors were afraid to perform abortions until the fetus had died, at which time it was too late to save the mother. The article also mentioned a Texas woman who was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy; apparently due to the draconian law that SCOTUS refuses to overturn, doctors were concerned about their potential legal liability and recommended the patient leave the state; she went to New Mexico where fortunately the surgery was successful. Like almost every Texas Republican, Cornyn has expressed no opposition to the Texas law. But unless something remarkable happens, such as 2 GOP justices departing the court and replaced by Biden, it is likely that sometime in 2022 abortion will be outlawed in over two dozen states.

Why do I object to green olives but love black olives? What’s my problem with cucumber? It’s a mystery!

I have have a number of prejudicial preferences (black over green olives) but the only things I refuse to eat outright would be organ meats, blood sausages or other offal.

There are plenty of foods I will not eat if prepared in a way that ruins them (canned green beans, for example) but my “absolutely will not eat” list is rather small.

I am also wary of any sort of pre-prepared spaghetti or pizza sauce, I have had severe allergic reactions to a couple of them.

You can’t serve both God (the Christian God depicted in the Bible, anyway, not the god these yokels worship) and Capitalism. But what am I saying? I’m preaching to the choir here, and if I were to even merely suggest such to one of these right-wing Christofascists, they’d call me a heretic.

The Fundamentalists are as selective in reading Adam Smith as they are reading the Bible.

Smith is clear that government has a role in ensuring that markets work to the benefit of everyone: producers as well as consumers, employers as well as employees, borrowers as well as lenders, etc…

An unregulated market is naturally going to skew to the interests of those with the most money concentrated in the fewest hands.

Basically Kepler wrote a defense of the Heliocentric system in the form of a story about a dream about a boy. The metaphors he used came across as “magic” to some readers leading to his mother being tried as a witch. The footnotes of the story which he was never able to afford to get published show an understanding of the laws Newton would later be famous for writing. Lots of snide remarks about the people of the time. The end.

Distribution of where those shots are matters.

Even in high vaccination states like NY, there is a wide distribution of counties with high vaccination rates, and those with low rates.

Northern NY counties have far lower vaccination rates than NYC. That’s due in no small part to the vaccination mandates imposed by NYC. Mandates work. Cases will soar in the low vaccination areas of states, even in states with high overall vaccinations.

This article agrees that Rogers, Kavanaugh and Barrett may look for a compromise short of total reversal of Roe, perhaps allowing states to ban abortion after the first trimester, when the vast majority of abortions occur. The irony of that is that people who get late abortions mostly wanted their babies, but a serious health threat to the mother arises, or there are defects in the fetus leaving it nonviable or severely disabled. slate.com

So, latest book to come out by a former Trumpworld sycophantic suckup notes that Trump was already sick with covid three days before the debate with Biden, and he was going to hide this fact, knowing that he may well give covid to Biden and Biden’s family.

They were going to knowingly infect everyone around them in hopes he could incapacitate or kill his political rivals.

These people are beyond redemption. They are sociopaths who belong in prison. Trump was a typhoid Mary. He was knowingly spreading covid19 to everyone he came in contact with. He nearly died himself. He nearly killed Christie.

And these people are still sucking up to Trump, even after all the crimes and malfeasance. Trump certainly knew how to pick his suckups. Craven cowards who are sociopaths themselves. They don’t know right from wrong. They don’t care about anyone but themselves, and even then, they’re going to ignore facts and reality and buy into Trump’s blustering bulkshit because they don’t want to appear weak in front of the bully Trump.

Trump is a bully’s bully. He made Christie look like a wimp.

And all of them have a body count - hundreds of thousands of Americans are dead because of Trump and his covid19 policies and response. The media continues to enable Trumpworld figures to try and rehab their image when the only thing they should all be remembered for is enabling the worst mass killing in US history and violating more federal laws than any admin in history.

The DOJ and justice in America is ill-prepared to deal with crimes of this scope and scale. It certainly can’t handle the political aspects of the crimes involved. And that means future elections are in grave peril as well.

lawhawk  Dec 1, 2021 • 6:33:52am

Biden is on pace to create more jobs in his first year than Trump did in his first three. Biden’s economic plan helps to create more wealth spread across a far greater number of Americans than Trump’s tax scam could. This means economic growth at a higher rate because more people have more available income to spend.

This is all a good thing, which means that the usual suspects will caterwaul about inflation and higher costs for certain goods/services, all while ignoring all the shortages due to Trump’s failed covid19 response.

Totally upending the careful compromise that the Burger court reached in putting the original cut-off at 23 weeks, where medical science said (and still says) that most fetuses are considered “viable” and thus can survive outside the womb. But you can be sure that there will be quickly be voices aplenty in the legacy media praising such a move and insisting that pro-choice folks accept this new “compromise” because the alternative was allowing total bans.

Not really, if abortion is still constitutionally protected in the first trimester when most abortions occur. It will be a huge burden on women who develop life threatening complications late in pregnancy, or find out their babies are nonviable or severely disabled. Women will die once states can ban late term abortions, as we have seen in other countries.

Yep. The line will be as it always is: “It must be a good compromise because nobody’s happy.” That cutting 7 weeks from the cut-off should be seen as “good enough” if it means that abortion remains legal. And there will be all sorts of finger-wagging about how women ought to know they’re pregnant and have made up their minds by 16 weeks, that they don’t need those additional 7 weeks to decide if they want to keep a “baby” or not.

The Dr. Oz Show’ taken off the air in Philadelphia, New York City due to Pennsylvania Senate run.
Per Philly Inquirer;

TV host Mehmet Oz is officially running for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat, and as a result, his long-running talk show will no longer air — at least in Philadelphia.

Fox made the decision Tuesday to remove The Dr. Oz Show from the airwaves in the Philadelphia and New York City markets, according to a spokesperson. It’s unclear what will replace it in the 2 p.m. timeslot on Fox 29.

The move comes as questions remain about the future of Oz’s show. During an interview on Fox News Tuesday night, host Sean Hannity alluded to Oz’s show ending by noting the host stands to take a big hit financially. But Oz hasn’t addressed whether his show will continue to air directly, and Sony Pictures Television is currently evaluating options on how to move forward, according to a spokesperson. The website for his show currently redirects to his campaign website.

The Dr. Oz Show premiered in 2009, thanks in large part to the celebrity doctor’s appearances on Oprah Winfrey’s show. Over the years, Oz has been criticized for promoting questionable diet pills and unscientific medical advice. In 2020, he made regular appearances on Fox News and promoted the antimalaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a way to treat COVID-19, despite the lack of scientific evidence.

And here comes the “He could have stayed in TV and made millions but he’s out here fighting to throw back the socialist agenda.”
Saint Oz.

Sucks that one of the responding officers was killed. Biggest fear about these kinds of cases is that a suspect is a skilled shooter and not just a gun humper who has guns for show.

And at that point it’s going to be hard to restrain me from dropping off symbolic body bags representing real women’s lives in front of Justice Handmaid’s Tale’s house. And that’s only because the Supreme Court has restrictions on protests in front of their building.

The happenings at the Supreme Court today are not surprising to anyone paying attention, like the good folks here at LGF, but it still feels like being smacked upside the head by a two by four.

I think I’ll start a think tank whose sole purpose is overturning Marbury v. Madison.

420
Targetpractice  Dec 1, 2021 • 9:31:17am

Based upon what we heard, I’d say we’ve a 5-3-1 split of the SCOTUS bench: 5 in favor of overturning Roe and Casey, 3 against, and 1 trying desperately to push a “compromise” that his colleagues have no interest in entertaining.

Hell, some of this questioning makes it clear that if they can find a way to swing it, they’ll blow past overturning Roe and Casey to outright establishing “fetal personhood.”

Then fetus life insurance policies will bankrupt the insurance industry. Per some findings only 30% of conceptions result in live birth.

The policies would be priced based on that data, so it would be extremely expensive.

So while the writing’s been on the wall for years, it’s fully apparent now that we have a Supreme Court all too willing to relegate women to the legal status of ‘incubator’ and transfer all their legal rights and personhood to their unborn child for the term, and will only consider restoring them upon natural, live birth.

And there’s nothing we can fucking do to stop it. We can try and put a band-aid on it later, or hope blithely for a chance to undo it in a later court, but with the pattern that our electorate has given us for decades, I’m hesitant to hold out hope for regaining a majority in the SCOTUS for at least another gen and a half.

There is no neutral. You either decide women have a right to an abortion or you don’t.

Kavanaugh has decided they don’t, that much is clear. He would leave it up to the states to decide if they can get a legal abortion or not.

Sometime next year. The abortion clinics in states with trigger laws might as well start making plans to close now.

Alito was the most blatant in this view, but it was a clear undercurrent in the questions asked by his fellow wingnuts. They are trying so damned hard to find some way to argue for fetal “personhood” without saying it out loud. Right now, it looks like they’re planning on going with the “bad ruling” bit and expecting future courts to just swear off any future rulings on the subject.

Thing is, 74mil+ voted FOR Trump. And we’re seeing just how fickle any kind of support that we can get can be, especially when the media has calcified their narrative so hard and so thoroughly to ‘Biden is the greatest historical failure in the history of ever, why don’t you hate him enough yet?!’ And unless this is the thing that breaks through their haze of GOP slobbering, we’re still going to run into the issue of the margins. Remember, a rather sizable majority of white women vote for exactly this shit, exactly what Trump offered, exactly what the Supremes are dishing out right now. And as made so painfully, painfully clear, the only hopes Dems have are pushing inroads and peeling off enough white votes to make up for the GOP’s structural and institutional advantages.

I hope there’s enough. But I’ve long stopped discounting the power of the overwhelming narrative and reflexive racism to hope too much.

Possible troubles in Elon-land:

SpaceX employees received a nightmare email over the holiday weekend from CEO Elon Musk, warning them of a brewing crisis with its Raptor engine production that, if unsolved, could result in the company’s bankruptcy. The email, obtained by SpaceExplored, CNBC, and The Verge, urged employees to work over the weekend in a desperate attempt to increase production of the engine meant to power its next-generation Starship launch vehicle.

“Unfortunately, the Raptor production crisis is much worse than it seemed a few weeks ago,” Musk reportedly wrote. “As we have dug into the issues following exiting prior senior management, they have unfortunately turned out to be far more severe than was reported. There is no way to sugarcoat this.”

SpaceX did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for comment but Musk did Tweet about the report Tuesday afternoon.

“The magnitude of the Starship program is not widely appreciated” Musk tweeted. “It is designed to extend life to Mars (and the moon), which requires ~1000 times more payload to orbit than all current Earth rockets combined.” Though Musk did not confirm or deny the email’s veracity he spoke to its content saying that, while he did not believe bankruptcy was likely, it wasn’t impossible either. The CEO went on to apparently quote Intel founder and former CEO Andrew Grove, writing “only the paranoid survive.”

Like, even under the the most ideal situation possible with a 50-50 Senate, we’d run into a lot of roadblocks, especially with how the media has gone out of its way to hang every failure of the current administration, real, exaggerated, and wholly imagined, as The Worst Thing Ever and Proof That Dems Are The Worst At Gov’t Ever. And I don’t need to say that we don’t even have close to the ideal situation under that 50-50 count. I can’t imagine how brutal the media and the polls would be if Biden and Dems tried and failed in an attempt to expand the court.

I guess its theoretically possible that Roberts could cobble together a coalition of the three liberals, him and Barrett to maintain a right to choose during the first trimester when most abortions are done anyway. It might seem to Breyer, Kagan and Sotomayor a better option than abortion being banned entirely in half the country. It seems unlikely though. I don’t know why Amy (“women can just abandon the baby when its born, so what’s the big deal?”) Barrett would go for that.

Expanding the Court is a nonstarter right now. We would have to see a backlash so massive that the Democrats expand their majorities in both the House and the Senate, and even then it seems unlikely.
