From the previous thread:
re: #276 jaunte

A state level EC is still a bad idea — the Republicans would immediately rejigger county boundaries to give maximum benefits to any Republican candidate.

Edit:
And they would do this for _every_ state wide election. The benefit of winner take all is that for state wide elections Democrats can win regardless of the gerrymandered boundaries. Would Democrats have one state wide elections in:
Kentucky, Georgia, Michigan, or Arizona, with Republicans in control of state legislatures?

Edit 2:
It’s the Republicans who always want to end direct elections for the Senate. That’s why. Don’t forget that the progressive Lincoln _won_ the popular vote in the Senate race against Douglas — it was the state legislature that voted to send Douglas against the wishes of the people.

They’re not going to redraw county boundaries. That would be a nightmare. At least here in Texas, counties are a state governing level with their own authority, resources, and relationship with the state government.

There is no way, no way, they would be able to shift county boundaries.

The powers of counties vary — their power is purely an internal detail of a state’s government. The only federal government involvement that I can think of are
- a judicial rulings that state legislative seats need to be equal by population — no state Senate’s with equal numbers of seats per county.
- Administrative definitions of first level divisions of states for Census, and other administrative purposes

Alaska has county equivalents called boroughs, but most of the state (by land area) is not part of a formal borough. Hawaii has one school district for the entire state crossing all county boundaries, and one county which is governed by its state department of health (the only remaining colony for those with leprosy).

I believe that in Massachusetts, they’re vestigial, except for the courts, but I haven’t lived there in a very long time and don’t remember the details.

Say Foo county is at the urban/rural cutoff area — convert it into one 100% Urban county, and another 40% Urban 60% rural county. (They might want to make the Urban numbers lower to stave off Urbanization that’ll flip it back blue.

Depending on what the state’s constitutional amendment procedure is, it might not even need a governor to sign off on it, or if there’s already a Republican governor, it’s all the more easier.

From last thread re: Nutcake with shotgun in front of UN
re: #268 No Malarkey!

[Embedded content]

The UN has been targeted before, with considerably more firepower.

NYT 12 December 1964:
Bazooka Fired at U.N. as Cuban Speaks; Launched in Queens, Missile Explodes in East River

United Nations Headquarters was fired upon yesterday with a 3.5-inch bazooka from across the East River. The attack coincided with a demonstration by anti‐Communist Cubans at the front entrance against the presence of Maj. Ernesto Che Guevara of Cuba.

A single shell from the bazooka, a portable rocket launcher used by, the Army, arced across the river from Queens and fell harmlessly about 200 yards from shore. The blast sent up a geyser of water and rattled windows in the headquarters just as Major Guevara, Havana’s Minister of Industry, was denouncing the United States.

Shortly before, a hysterical woman brandishing a hunting knife with a seven‐inch blade detached herself from 50 antiGuevara pickets and tried to force her way into the front entrance. The police subdued the leather‐jacketed woman, and later quoted her as saying she intended to assassinate Major Guevara.

And a week and half later…..
Three Castro Foes Arrested in Firing Of Bazooka at U.N

Three Cubans, understood to be opponents of the regime of Premier Fidel Castro, were arrested last night in the Dee. 11 firing of a bazooka shell toward the United Nations Headquarters.

Chief of Detectives Philip J. Walsh said eactt of the three was charged with endangering life maliciously by placing an explosive near a building, and with attempting to damage a building or a vessel, both of which are felonies. They were further charged with conspiracy, a misdemeanor..

I finally read through the article about Black Oxygen Organics, and the company’s downfall wasn’t Health Canada, the FDA, anti-MLM people but…their payment processor. Visa and MasterCard hate chargebacks with the heat of a billion suns, and given that a lot of people in the US had ordered the dirt and hadn’t gotten it, their payment processor decided NOPE.

According to BOO President Carlo Garibaldi, they had weathered the FTC complaints, the FDA seizures, the Health Canada recalls and the online mob. But the “fatal blow” came when their online merchant dropped them as clients.

With no actual product in stock for the last two months, sellers had been urging customers to “preorder” BOO. Now, the throng of customers responding to the nonconsumable “reformulation” by asking for their money back had spooked their payment processor.

nbcnews.com

This is the same thing that happened to Jim Bakker’s scam last year after he ran into trouble for selling colloidal silver for Covid. He got cut off from credit processing and now you can only buy his “buckets of slop” with a check.

Utah Makes Welfare So Hard to Get, Some Feel They Must Join the LDS Church to Get Aid
Utah’s safety net for the poor is so intertwined with the LDS Church that individual bishops often decide who receives assistance. Some deny help unless a person goes to services or gets baptized.

propublica.org

My only comment on this is that I had multiple friends who fell on hard times when I lived in Utah. Since they were Mormon, they went to their bishop to try and get assistance from the Bishop’s Storehouse. I heard more than one story about how awful it was to have the Relief Society president go through their cupboards to see if they were worthy.

Oh, and if you got assistance, you were still expected to tithe, and to volunteer to work in the church. Blergh. This article is NO surprise.

ETA: The largest church in Utah is sitting on at least $38 billion under management at Ensign Peak, and according to the Wall Street Journal, has in excess of $100 billion in assets. That there are poor and homeless in areas where the church formerly known as Mormon is dominant is shameful.

You can’t distribute electoral votes by county anyway, because counties vary wildly in population, unless you are going to award fractions of electoral votes, which would be a nightmare. You would do it by congressional district, like Maine and Nebraska do, and congressional district boundaries are most definitely gerrymandered.

Decided to make room for a rolling workbench my neighbor is giving me. First thing I had to do was move a forty year old wooden bench out of the garage by myself. Will put it on nextdoor… Some reassembly required…

I was even able to move the couch my wife says will one day reupholster that was blocking the door all the way inside. It’s a nice couch, mid-century… But the cushions are totally shot.

From the article above:

State employees then explicitly recommended to Bellamy that she ask for welfare from the church instead, she and her family members said in interviews.

*snipped*
Although maintaining a safety net for the poor is the government’s job, welfare in Utah has become so entangled with the state’s dominant religion that the agency in charge of public assistance here counts a percentage of the welfare provided by the LDS Church toward the state’s own welfare spending, according to a memorandum of understanding between the church and the state obtained by ProPublica.

Wow. It’s like they forgot about the separation of Church and State.

Anyone shocked at this:

Researchers at the U.K.’s Newcastle University have found that as many as seven in 10 cryptocurrency trades on popular exchanges worldwide may involve people purchasing from themselves to inflate prices artificially. The researchers studied trades of the four most popular cryptocurrencies—bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple—on 29 cryptocurrency exchanges from July to November 2019. The researchers uncovered large volumes of “wash trading,” in which investors sell and buy the same asset to create artificial interest in an investment, which generally distorts prices. They said such wash trading appeared to account for more than 70% of total trading volume on unregulated exchanges.

Never been to Utah, the one time I could have gone there was when the airline tried to rebook me on a work trip to DC via a stop in SLC with no confirmed onward flight — I held out for rebooking to another East Coast airport and doing my first ever drive in either the dark or in snow instead, since well I had to be in DC for work ASAP.

It’s one thing to intellectually know they have crazy liquor laws, and it’s another thing to hear that the state is an adjunct of the church. Utah has a rep at being much better than the other red states at controlling poverty and homelessness, but that’s obviously even more than I thought due to the State working hand-in-hand with the Church.

*And yes, I know how many states have outsourced basic state services especially adoption agencies to private individuals.

Dear Ms. Fitch:

Bull to the shit.

(from 2018)

(Reuters Health) - - Women who want an abortion but are denied one are more likely to spend years living in poverty than women who have abortions, a new study suggests.

Carrying an unwanted pregnancy to term quadrupled the odds that a new mother and her child would live below the federal poverty line, researchers reported in the American Journal of Public Health…

The single most common reason women cite for wanting an abortion is because they cannot afford to raise a child, Foster said.

For women denied abortions, public-assistance programs failed to make up for the cost of a new baby and to pull households out of poverty, the study found.

Anti-choicers lie all the time, just like every other major group in the GOP “big tent” of resentful degenerates.

It’s an amusing gotcha, but a secular concern for the value of human life can be substituted for “sanctity” to evade it.

Which is why my go-to argument these days in the abortion wars is that I will not listen to lies from death cultists pretending they care about human life. Yes, it is a logically invalid ad hominem argument, but politically it is 100% valid.
