Huge Santana fan here, also. I’m glad that he recognized there was a serious problem and asked his wife to get him to a hospital. Too many people try to poo-poo early warning signs and try to “tough it out”.

Given how much football and/or basketball generates for major universities (in most cases funding nearly all of the athletic programs and then some), it is not entirely shocking that this is the case. Also, given that most university boosters care more about football and/or basketball, it’s really not a terrible shock that coaches (and former coaches via buy-outs) end up being paid so much.

29
KGxvi  Dec 2, 2021 • 4:11:49pm

Since I’ve noticed some chatter about how Republican legislatures and election officials are trying to set up a scenario where they can replace electors if the vote doesn’t go their way; Pelosi and Democratic leadership needs to put this out there:

If any state legislature tries to over turn presidential votes and replace electors, then those states lose all their seats in the House pursuant to the 14th Amendment.

Of course, that requires courage of conviction, so…

Brett Kavanaugh is Irish-American. So is Kennedy. We Irish-Americans have been “honorary whites” in this country for a long time now, such that our white-status is no longer “honorary.”

John Kennedy is a white Southern Conservative from Louisiana.

Dale Ho isn’t.

Only whites are allowed to be angry and throw public fits in politics.

The “math” isn’t hard to work out.

I was a grad student on the IU campus when Bobby Knight was fired by Miles Brand after Knight grabbed a kid and yanked his arm after the kid called him “Knight.” Brand had instituted a “zero tolerance” policy on Knight after video showed him choking a player. There were riots on campus for a couple of days. But the untold story was that an IU professor who wrote a book criticizing college sports in general (“Beer and Circus”; Murray Sperber), but who also criticized Knight, was forced to take a leave of absence due to death threats. As I recall, he didn’t come back and instead took a new job out in Cal.

My MA has Miles Brand’s signature, but not my PhD: he resigned and took a job running NCAA. He was not a great president, IMHO, but I think he probably did worse running the NCAA. Poor guy died of cancer and wasn’t much mourned in south central Indiana or anywhere else where Hoosierland exists.

Anyone else been following the momlinneal thing on tiktok?

Long story short: woman on tiktok has some historical conspiracy theories, one of which is that Alexander the Great was actually a woman (fun and enough speculative stuff to make you go “huh, maybe” but not particularly harmful). Then she comes out and says that the Roman Empire did not exist and instead is a myth created by… wait for it… the Spanish Inquisition in the 1400 (insert your “nobody expects…” joke here). All of history/archeology/classics/etc tiktok team up like the Avengers to shut that one down.

It’s actually quite entertaining.

It’s intentional. There’s no way all this social media stuff can so consistently benefit the right without the bias coming straight from the top.

See also the supposed ‘incompetence’ of much of the US mainstream political media. Ownership wants to push the Great Both Sides Lie, so that is what is done.

Humans have existed in modern form for about 250 thousand years and what was before that was still basically human more or less for about a half million years or so. If “natural immunity” were either helpful in protecting from disease or capable of bringing about herd immunity, pretty much no communicable disease that’s survivable would exist anymore and the population of the world would have skyrocketed a very long time ago, rather than right around when modern medicine and vaccinations became regular things.

Plumber discovers money, checks in wall of Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church, years after $600K burglary

HOUSTON - You may remember hundreds of thousands of dollars that were stolen from a safe at Lakewood Church. It was a big headline back in 2014.

Now, all these years later, another bombshell has dropped.

A plumber says he found money in a wall while he was doing work at the church on Nov. 10, 2021. The news came to light during the radio morning show at 100.3 The Bull.

“It was just unbelievable!” Morning Show Host for the Morning Bullpen George Lindsey said. “The things he was telling us that they found in the walls.”

Lindsey was shocked when he listened to viewers Thursday morning, but says this one caller really took the segment over the edge.

“There was a loose toilet in the wall, and we removed the tile,” the caller said. “We went to go remove the toilet, and I moved some insulation away and about 500 envelopes fell out of the wall, and I was like ‘Oh wow!’”

The caller said the envelopes were full of cash and checks.

“I went ahead and contacted the maintenance supervisor that was there, and I turned it all in,” he added.

Lindsey couldn’t what he had just heard.

“We were like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Lindsey said. “So, then he relayed to us that in 2014 there was a big story about money being stolen from Lakewood church that they never recovered.”

So I got a little manly today and decided to clean the garage a bit…the old workbench that had to be moved out to make way for the solar components needed to go, and my next door neighbor had offered me his old Sears Craftsman bench on wheels as he upgraded his own (he’s been the neighbor of requirement - gave me a full set of 20V DeWalt drills and Sawzall, as well as a couple more electric goodies as he upgraded.

Anyhoo, I broke down the workbench, dragged it all outside, found a local guy to haul it away - he wanted 200 bucks…I took a thirty minute ride on the peloton…he reoffered 150 and I accepted. Then as he was loading his truck he said “This is really a $200 load…how about 160?” - I agreed, then when he was done loading his truck I said, “Let’s call it 190.” - I figured if he was working me for $10 then an extra 30 probably would be welcome.

Besides, he had one of those shitty short beds they put on trucks these days…almost makes them worthless. 8’ beds should be required by law.

re: #90 darthstar

8’ beds should be required by law.

damn. for me, that’s 20 bucks to the local homeless guy who is basically working for booze. For 190, I’d need someone to come back with a cord of cut firewood in back from old hardwoods after they’d taken the load to the dump.

I must live in a pricier part of the country…I was expecting to pay 150. When I had my 1970 International, I’d just load the shit in there and take it up to the landfill (130 bucks for a truck bed regardless of how much crap was in it).

I could have called my gardener who comes in on Fridays for $75 and asked him to take it away, but he, too, would have to pay someone unless he found an unlocked church dumpster he could throw it in…(we used to do that in college after parties)

College sports programs can bring in a lot of money. Elite programs bring in 100s of millions of dollars per year. Paying $10 million to a coach that can increase your revenue by $50 million is a no brainer. The real scandal is that the actual athletes don’t make anything, and most don’t get an education and won’t make it in the pros.

And all that money hasn’t done a thing to lower the cost of college for most people. I personally don’t think sports has a place in schools. It takes away a lot. Very few people are able to be athletic to the degree needed for sports. College is supposed to be about learning new things and skills for a career or a passion you want to pursue. What sports does is create a club for special people who many times don’t give a shit about learning. They are there because they get treated like they are bett er than everyone else and that shit starts as young as middle school. This is my opinion and your mileage may vary, but it was a stupid idea to tie sports to education. And a damned football coach is not more valuable than a teacher who has devoted their life to education.

Reminds me of a time back in the dark ages of online services (this was GEnie, built on the backbone of Western Union’s transmission network). One Friday evening, the neo-Nazis showed up. Now evenings and weekends were free on GEnie and it was a 60 hour “hunt down the Nazis and run them OFF” fest until Monday morning. They didn’t come back to GEnie, but they ended up elsewhere. That was almost 30 years ago, what the hell happened to the idea that Nazis, neo or otherwise, were just Bad News?

Apparently tinfoil hats may not always work as well as we hoped:

…snip…

A Faraday cage severely attenuates radio signals going in or out of it. It can be used to assure that an untrustworthy device (like a cellphone) isn’t transmitting or receiving signals when it shouldn’t be. A Faraday cage is simple in principle: it’s just a solid conductive container that completely encloses the signal source, such that the RF voltage differential between any two points on the cage is always zero. But actually constructing one that works well in practice can be challenging. Any opening can create a junction that acts as an RF feed and dramatically reduces the effective attenuation.

…snip…

What does that mean for us? Conservatively, as a practical matter, 80 or 90 dB of attenuation is plenty, unless your phone is within a few feet of a cell tower antenna (which is an unsafe place for your body to be in any case). So we want our Faraday pouch to provide at least that much attenuation at the frequencies of concern.

…snip…

“Wrap it in tin foil” is perhaps the most common advice found on the Internet for making a makeshift Faraday cage. In my experiments, I found I could sometimes achieve approximately 90 dB attenuation by carefully wrapping the generator in foil and double folding the seams on all sides, which is quite good (comparable to commercial pouches). Unfortunately the results were extremely inconsistent and difficult to replicate. The same technique that produced 90 dB attenuation in one test would produce only 50 dB the next time, with no visually obvious differences. It is extremely difficult to reliably obtain a good RF seam, at least with the kitchen-grade foil I used.

I am not surprised that VB is ahead of the curve. But I had been unaware of the movement away from wax candles in menorahs/hanukkiot and towards using olive oil. (I guess that I’m a ‘Late adopter’ in tech speak.)

…snip…
Observant Israelis increasingly like to use olive oil in their Hanukkah candelabras instead of wax candles because of its significance in the holiday’s story. Hanukkah, which this year begins on Sunday evening, is a celebration of how the Maccabees, after defeating the Greeks, were able to light the menorah in the temple in Jerusalem for eight days with a one-day supply of oil— believed to be of the olive variety.

“Using olive oil for Hanukkah candles is not required by halacha [Jewish law], but in our communities everybody does it,” David said.

Those who follow suit want only 100% pure olive oil to use in their menorahs (technically known as hanukkiot) — and that has become more expensive in Israel over time because of tariffs on imports and the rising demand.

In response, some producers dilute their olive oil with cheaper vegetable oils without disclosing all of the ingredients and lure consumers in with lower prices. The product can still be considered kosher, but it is unacceptable for the observant Jews who want only pure olive oil in their menorahs.
…snip…

As more Israelis choose pure olive oil to light the Hanukkah menorah, counterfeiters see an opportunity

Sidestepping the problems of the powers that be is education. Teach math - introduce proper numbers and double row accounting. Plant the seeds of calculus. Teach economics and banking. I agree with your points. Particularly the first.

What got me was the point about the internal societal conflicts holding back the society. I was just thinking about our own country’s issues.

And things like how the power structure in Afghanistan, never very fully in our court, easily tilted so strongly away from us in the end. Vietnam was the same way.

How Cortes required hundreds of thousands of indigenous allies to overcome the Aztecs. And got them.

But yes, education is vital to developing a country. But even that threatens some of the elites. Look again to the previous administration which happily worked to destroy public education. They didn’t care how low society fell; As long they stayed on top.

Really great that, for the second election in a row, one of the two major parties has an agenda so malicious, harmful, and incoherent, so utterly devoid of good ideas, that they refuse to put it in writing.

They don’t want to get caught out accidentally supporting something the Democrats might also advocate.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Today jobs figures dropped, and the media is losing their shit over what they say are disappointing numbers.

Except we’ve seen what the BLS has done over the past 6 months. They’ve lowballed the numbers and the revisions have been upwards significantly each and every time. They’ve “found” more than half a million more jobs over the past few months that didn’t show up in the preliminary figure. Watch this trend to continue here too.

And while we’re at it, the November jobs figure was still higher than all of 13 months of Trump’s first three years. In other words, Biden is still on pace to create more jobs in his first year than Trump did in his entire term.

A 13-year-old who orders parts online and assembles and sells ghost guns has killed his sister while trying to shoot a client who didn’t pay.

ATLANTA (AP) — A 14-year-old Georgia girl was killed when her younger brother was trying to sell a homemade gun, and he fired a shot at people who took the weapon without paying, a sheriff said.

The shot struck Kyra Scott, and she died as her mother was trying to take her to a hospital, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Douglas County Sheriff Tim Pounds said Kyra’s 13-year-old brother and the man who was allegedly trying to buy a homemade gun, 19-year-old Yusef McArthur El, were both arrested Monday and charged with murder. McArthur El is also charged with robbery-sudden snatch. The two were denied bond Tuesday. A sheriff’s captain said Thursday they did not yet have attorneys.

McArthur El was being held at the Douglas County jail, and the 13-year-old boy was at a youth detention center.

Pounds said the boy had ordered all the parts he needed to make guns, including semiautomatic weapons, and the boy had been selling them. On Saturday, two people arrived at a home in Douglasville to buy one of his guns and fled without paying, Pounds said.

Because the BLS has been off on job growth for the past two years. They undercounted the job losses by a significant margin, and they’re undercounting the job gains post Trump.

Take the BLS jobs amounts post revision and couple that with ADP payroll and you’d see that there’s robust job growth under Biden that continues to this day.

Precisely. He is an actor. His job is acting. Anytime you see an interview with an actor the question should be asked: “Are they sincere? Or are they acting sincere?”

Most likely he will skate on any charges, and as far as monetary damages? Well, most of those will be the from the production company/studio.

As governments and health authorities around the world battle to contain the spread of the new Omicron strain of Covid-19, it has been reported that one of the first cases detected in the United States—a man who had travelled to New York from Minnesota—was in the city to attend an anime convention.

The man, from Hennepin County, was vaccinated according to Minnesota’s Department of Health. After developing mild symptoms on November 22—which have already “resolved”—he was tested on November 24, before isolating.

Between November 19-21, however, he had been in New York City attending Anime NYC 2021 at the Javits Center, an event that attracted over 53,000 fans. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is now urging every single attendee of and worker at the convention to get tested immediately.

But sure, let’s just keep pretending this pandemic is over.

Even this is unknown. Sometimes it’s the director who has the responsibility — depends on the film and the contract. And I doubt that all twelve producers had equal responsibilities. It likely means something that there were both executive producers (which Baldwin wasn’t ) and producers.

Look into any Trump supporting lawyer or business person, and you’ll find corruption. Birds of a feather.

A federal grand jury investigating Donald Trump’s former attorney Sidney Powell has uncovered evidence that Powell filed false incorporation papers with the state of Texas for a non-profit she heads, Defending the Republic, according to sources close to the investigation.

In the incorporation papers, Powell - who filed lawsuits across the US questioning the 2020 election result which Trump lost to Joe Biden - listed two men who she said served with her on the organization’s board of directors, even though neither one of them gave Powell permission to do so.

I am not surprised that VB is ahead of the curve. But I had been unaware of the movement away from wax candles in menorahs/hanukkiot and towards using olive oil. (I guess that I’m a ‘Late adopter’ in tech speak.)

As more Israelis choose pure olive oil to light the Hanukkah menorah, counterfeiters see an opportunity
jta.org

The reason for using olive oil in the hanukkiah is not a trend, it is the literal “Miracle of Hanukkah” in which a small amount of olive oil burned in the Temple Menorah for 8 days. Israelis have always preferred olive oil over wax candles for the holiday. It’s only recently though that ready-to-use oil candles are sold alongside wax candles.

We used to prepare our own oil candles using bottled olive oil, little glass vials and cotton wicks, it was messy and time consuming. And most hanukkiot are still made to hold narrow wax candles, not oil cups (as we found out this week).

The fight sequences have more to do with speed and agility than brawn. Big guy fight scenes are usually the ineffective punch to the jaw, a pregnant pause, then lots of loud crashing noises.

[Embedded content]

And while we’re at it, the November jobs figure was still higher than all of 13 months of Trump’s first three years. In other words, Biden is still on pace to create more jobs in his first year than Trump did in his entire term.

it took the bloomberg group roughly a minute to figure out that this was actually a really good jobs report. of course, they all work in an industry that fires people who don’t know how to analyze numbers….

So this Alec Baldwin interview with Stephanopolous… does not impress me.

The title of the show is “Alec Baldwin Unscripted.” Which I don’t believe for a minute. He’s had six weeks for the best crisis communications team money can buy to write him a script, and he’s actually a pretty good actor. This was a performance.

And the script was written in a way that’s going to come back to bite him when it comes to trial. A whole lot of “not my job to check the gun, not my responsibility, somebody who handed it to me said it was cold and I just believed him”… that’s not going to fly.

he’s the actor. it is definitely not his job to check the gun. he is literally paying somebody to check the gun for him to make sure it is safe.

omicron may be a blessing. it may have mutated itself to the point where it’s more easily transmissible, but may also have mutated to where it doesn’t kill its host as readily, which is genetically what viruses are trying to do anyway. doesn’t do a virus any good to kill a host, especially if you can become a common cold that can reinfect people over and over again.

The certainly had it way before the 1960s because i remember it back that far.

Made in Israel it takes either candles through the big holes, or filled with oil and wicks through the small ‘spout’ holes.

We’ve done both.

Odysseus? That’s what we named our dog too! But our nickname was Diz. He preferred delaying his enjoyment of treats; sometimes he would carry it around for hours, even a couple days, before eating it, but then he never had to contend with a sibling who might snatch it away from him.

True: but that’s using an accurate and reality-based definition of “communism”. When fools like MTG use it, it’s mostly a meaningless boogeyman-buzzword designed to elicit a negative response.

368
Punish Domestic Terrorists  Dec 3, 2021 • 10:27:58am

This is so much better than the Agents of Shield days. Disney is spending movie money on Marvel TV shows.

In the comics, Maria Hill has a prominent role, and Deadline just caught the news that Cobie Smulders will be returning in the role that she has filled in every Avengers movie, not to mention Spider-Man: Far From Home. She’s joining another Avengers-regular, Samuel L. Jackson, who will be reprising his role as Nick Fury (or will he?).

It appears that Fury will be a starring figure in the TV adaptation, alongside Ben Mendehlson reprising his role as the Skrull leader Talos from Captain Marvel. The two were last seen in the post-credits sequence of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where the charmingly distraught Talos was impersonating Fury, and the actual Fury seemed to be managing a project on a Skrull ship.

The rest of Secret Invasion’s cast, so far. includes Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Killian Scott, and Christopher MacDonald, who might be best known for his role as Shooter MacGavin in Happy Gilmore — but experienced another alien invasion in the ’90s cult classic The Faculty.

Marvel’s Secret Invasion is building a cast fit for an Avengers movie (Polygon)

According to reports, they asked the parents to take him home and the parents resisted that request and left without him. I don’t know what the rules are for forcing a child out of the school, but the parents definitely deserve the strictest punishment that is available under the law for their gross negligence and contribution to this massacre.

Odysseus’ (a beagle) name is a nod to my NY Mets fandom. Their very first mascot, when they were still playing at the Polo Grounds, was a beagle named Homer
My previous beagle was Titus Argos
And Odysseus allowed me to use Ody for short, to give a nod to somewhat famous beagle

re: #372 No Malarkey!

Back when my son was in high school he was treated like shit by a lot of the students. One asshole in particular was a star athlete who pretended to be his friend. One day he pulled my kid aside and told him this girl had a serious crush on him and he should go up and grab her ass, she’d be ok with it. She was in on this I found out later. I was called in to school with the cop/resource officer and he was suspended for 5 days. And told the girl was distraught and was thinking of pressing charges. My son is on the autism spectrum and was terrified. He knew better and had to be talked into doing it. His special education teachers both were pissed and got Mr.Athletic Star suspended too. And no, my son was not on the right side of anything here, he got in trouble at home for this too. But he was traumatized by this and to this day stresses out about hurting that girl. Who later that night was taking selfies and laughing with her friends at a party. She also posted about teaching a “retard a lesson” that day. I showed the principal that post the following day and she was suspended and my son was allowed back to school three days early. Mr Athlete got a full ride college scholarship and dropped out of school one year in. He works at Home Depot in the garden dept now.

My kid got more punishment for that than this kid got for being a serious threat to everyone.

Some schools act if someone bites a pop-tart into the shape of a gun, and others let a deeply disturbed kid like this stay in school. Of course, the parents won’t have warned the principle that they’d just introduced a gun into this disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah, they did know to at least strongly suspect that he had a gun. A lot of negligent people are going to be sued over the kids they’ve killed, and we’ll hear more about what the parents did and did not tell the principle when they were called in over their little maniac.
