What I think would have happened is the cops would have showed up, asked about the parents, found out that they left him at school, and would have decided itā€™s not worth the effort.

and you do it anyway

When Republicans refuse to restrict the rights of women, minorities, or LGBTQ+, they get primaried by someone more extreme.

When Democrats fail to get everything passed, voters just stay home.

The system is biased in favor of conservatives, but Democrats turning out can overcome it.

Odysseus consumed his rapidly, as is the norm.
Shelby is entering hour two of chewing and looks to have more than an hour or two remaining.
Ody is starting to get jealous and whining

Ody has managed to gain control of the remaining treat.
Which is also quite typical.

Now Iā€™ll grab the leashes and drain the dogs, weā€™ll see how ownership goes from there

I watched his press conference yesterday and he actually made sense. Said the gun laws are lax and need to be tougher, that law enforcement is frustrated with people who violate gun laws getting light sentences and getting done with one charge and end up charged again because of lack of consequences. He said if the laws were tougher these crimes would not be so common. Not sure what his backpedaling is about.

Iā€™m just curious about why whoever it was bothered stuffing checks into the wall. The person who wrote the check would realize it had never been cashed, and it would look suspicious if someone showed up at a bank trying to cash a bunch of old checks. Itā€™s odd.

thereā€™s a grifter movie in which an evangelist charlatan doesnā€™t bother to cash checks for 5 bucks because itā€™s too much hassle. so they just get bagged and stuffed somewhere. The same might be true of one and five dollar bills. Maybe the grift is so large that it just wasnā€™t worth having someone actually count through the small bills.

We also read it in the 9th grade (in 1964). We had a super-religious kid in our class who was sophisticated enough to recognize it as an attack on his superstition and complain about it. I canā€™t remember which mob he belonged to, but they also refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance (which Repugs of course treat as a recent development by Demo-commies). More like the other way round: the Crumbleysā€™ flight seems more like it was inspired by some hackneyed TV cop-drama theyā€™ve watched too much of.
Though hopefully they arenā€™t going to be counting on it ending in the typical TV cop-drama fashion, I.e. a loud shootoutā€¦ā€¦

re: #206 Barefoot Grin

Governments always propagandize their own people, but I hope the goal of the US government will be to do as little as that as possible.

And this gets us to the ā€œruralā€ problem. No matter what program Biden and company may wish to bestow upon red-rural-America, there is no going back on the culture wars.

This is where I think our society has reached: weā€™re just going to have to wait until the Reaganism Republicans all die off.

In an ideal world people would all politely debate each other and be willing to follow the facts on whatever issue.

But we donā€™t live in an ideal world.

Still, I do think the Democrats have to be quite clear in their publicity.

It needs to be driven home daily that life in the 21st century requires 21st century solutions, not 18th century practices.

For a starters, I think Biden really needs to do a twice weakly TV/radio show. Iā€™ve written this before, and Iā€™ll repeat it again. Biden needs to be more visible and audible.

I donā€™t want to argue about that part, but rather if the BBB passes I think it will be very importantā€”knowing that they think we talk down to themā€”to have a full-court press rather than constantly conceding rural America to the GOP. Thatā€™s where SCOTUS appointments dwell.

Yeah, but what neither guy seems to want to face (and what SO many politicians and political commentators tiptoe around), is that the real ā€œappealā€ to so (too) many of those ā€œruralā€ voters is that Republicans make their main political pitch by pandering to peoplesā€™ prejudices and painting their opponents as ā€œenemiesā€ implacably hostile to them and their entire ā€œcultureā€. So pointing out that Democrats ā€œget shit doneā€ - however true it is, and however much gets done, isnā€™t going to garner many votes when the other sideā€™s appeal is mostly to simply paint the Ds as communist atheist baby-killer race-traitorsā€¦.

re: #205 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of Big Bird, Bert, and Ernie

We also read it in the 9th grade (in 1964). We had a super-religious kid in our class who was sophisticated enough to recognize it as an attack on his superstition and complain about it. I canā€™t remember which mob he belonged to, but they also refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance (which Repugs of course treat as a recent development by Demo-commies). Incidentally, Miles Hyman, whose graphic novel adaptation of ā€œThe Lotteryā€ was banned, is the grandson of the storyā€™s author, Shirley Jackson.

He would have been Amish, and yes, a story about people stoning a sacrificial victim in order to bring in a good harvest, because thatā€™s the way itā€™s done, would probably have had the Amish squeaking around uncomfortably in their desks.
