As I have done before, I want to share Sen. Chris Murphy’s email newsletter: this one about Ireland, Northern Ireland, the UK and Brexit. It is very long, so behind the tag.

My ancestors fled Ireland during the Great Famine and quickly discovered a proud Irish-American community in a state called Connecticut. First in Willimantic and Norwich, and then spread across the state, my family’s roots in Connecticut are long and deep, dating back to the Civil War era. But those roots begin in Ireland, and now, as an Irish-American with a seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I feel an obligation to be a voice for Irish-Americans and the U.S.-Ireland alliance.

That is why I took a three-day diplomatic trip to Belfast and London just before Thanksgiving, to speak for Irish-Americans at a critical moment on the Irish isle. What follows is a behind-the-scenes account of the trip. It’s a long read, but I hope it’s worth your time.

I have an iPhone 11 pro? Wide angle, Etc. I haven’t seen a reason to upgrade beyond that, but I upgraded from a 7, so….

I use an iPhone 8, and it does what I need, so I haven’t upgraded. Money is an object.

Perzactly, the 7 was becoming soooooo laggy, I upgraded. Upgrading a 10? I don’t see it.

Punish Domestic Terrorists  Dec 3, 2021 • 8:27:40pm

At 4:34 my apartment complex sent out a personalized email about noise complaints, and the need to keep it down.

At 4:47, they sent out a note to clarify that the initial email was to all residents, once they realized what they’d done by personalizing the emails, probably because they’d started hearing back from people.

I read the 4:47 one first, working my way down my emails, so it went better for me than it will have for some other residents.

The new Annie is fabulous.

Am sorry I didn’t get to watch it live, but it’s on Peacock.

My father taught me to love musicals.

I’ll have to tell my wife you said that. She was reading that people were panning it.

With regards to the Crumbley parents withdrawing $4,000 via an ATM: Just going to point out that under normal circumstances, you can’t take out more than a few hundred dollars a day via the ATM. That’s actually for your protection, in case your card gets stolen, your account can’t be cleaned out.

You CAN get the limit raised by calling in. I did it once in front of an ATM in Pensacola because I needed about twice as much as my daily limit. I had a specific number in mind and I was at the ATM. The banker raised the daily limit temporarily so I could get the cash.

For the average demand deposit account holder, $4,000 is around 10 times as much as the standard daily limit. If I needed that kind of money, I would have gone into the branch, but obviously since they were in their area, this would have attracted attention in the branch. They probably thought it was easier to call and ask the banker to raise their daily limit to $4K. (Or asked what they could raise their limit to, and took that amount???) If they bank with my evil too big to fail employer, it’s entirely likely that the banker didn’t even recognize their name because none of our phone bankers are located in MIchigan.

re: #12 mmmirele

I have a daily max on my card of $500. ATM, groceries, whatever. When I bought my Leica I had to have the branch manager approve a one time limit raise to $3000 (more than needed but they prefer that in case I needed to do anything else that day) for that transaction.

Yeah, it’s an all-around worse situation for Qevin because the crazies are not only crazier, but any “moderates” he might have hoped to throw their support behind him are keeping a low profile for fear of being the next target of the MAGAts.

Near Belle Isle. Crossing the border at a legal crossing point would be incredibly stupid (since either Customs and Border Protection leaving the USA or Border Services entering Canada are probably stopping everything). I imagine the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron/Sarnia is also being watched.

Would they be dumb enough to try an illegal crossing over the Detroit River (maybe steal a boat or something)?

The Source of Our Fears (December 3, 2021)

The funny thing about fear is that it is all a part of the same conversation. Women are afraid that their rights will be taken away after 48 years and that is the big news item of the day. Protesters from the summer and before were finally standing up to rogue law enforcement forcing people of color to live in fear of their lives when they encounter law enforcement. The fear I’m thinking of today is a lot closer to home.

It’s sad when you see that fear first hand. It’s heartbreaking when you see it in your own children. Our daughter’s school had a couple of days of bomb threats this week. Social media is doing what it does and managed to spread all kinds of rumors about what might happen. So, more than half the school decided to stay home yesterday. The principal said those absences would be excused. She obviously understood the impulse.

My wife and I sat there as our daughter cried when we discussed her coming to school today. We left it up to her. Forcing her to go seemed somehow cruel. Yet, she talked a long time about the guilt of avoiding a possible event. It didn’t make sense and yet it made perfect sense. She decided to go and yet the fear she is feeling is unavoidable. We can only hope it dissipates before it becomes a permanent thing.

The shell is most likely from a 6lb’er World War Two British Anti-tank _gun_. Aka the 57mm gun in the US. It was a highly popular antitank gun in the early stages of World War 2. And, no it was not from a mortar.

re: #59 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

All cryptocurrencies are crashing.

From Nov 16, 2021:

The crash comes less than a week after bitcoin hit a new record high, jumping just above $69,000. This came as part of a wider rally following a market crash earlier this year, a response to an intensifying regulatory crackdown in China and growing concerns over bitcoin’s environmental impact. The crash wiped many of the gains made throughout the pandemic, when the volatile market thrived due to numerous factors including an influx of retail investors, more options to trade digital currencies and the popularity of meme stocks and tokens driven by online forums on sites like Reddit and celebrity endorsement.

What We Don’t Know

It’s not clear why the cryptocurrency market is crashing, though there are several factors that could contribute. Chinese authorities renewed efforts to crackdown on cryptocurrency mining Tuesday, slamming the energy consumption and carbon footprint of the process. China’s earlier crackdown on mining saw cryptocurrency miners flee the country en masse, many of whom landed in the U.S. Another possible reason could be responses to President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill, which includes provisions for potentially regulating and taxing cryptocurrency.

It’s all in the phrase used: “babies are expensive.” Like I said, the whole argument reeks of privilege, of the kid who grew up with money unable to comprehend why people around them aren’t able to be “thrifty” by just giving up a “luxury.”

The cops just “intuitively” knew they were decent folks and wouldn’t blow town. I can’t imagine what sort of cop “intuition” led to that sort of conclusion; it’s a mystery, white? Er, right?

The district attorney claimed they were under surveillance at home. If that is true, how did they manage to dodge it? If that is true, it seems like one or more cops let them go. (It’s irresponsible not to speculate.)

And the idea people had they might commit suicide? If they were going to do that, why not just do it at home rather than leading a bunch of cops and federal marshals on a chase through southeast Michigan?

What’s this “It’s time” business? Everybody knew they were lying as they sat before Congress. If you truly went through those confirmation hearings genuinely believing they were honest about their belief that RvW was “settled law,” then I’ve got some oceanfront property in Nevada I’m selling for cheap.

It was Kabuki. Everyone knew they were being placed on the Court to reverse Roe, but they had to pretend otherwise. There will be no consequences for the Justices.

So, I’m seeing that James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of the kid who shot up his school on Tuesday, are on the lam. Apparently, their vehicle has been found abandoned in Detroit, in the Islandview neighborhood.

Needless to say, Five-O is looking for them and there’s a $10K bounty for information leading to their arrest.

Same money, easier and safer to hunt down abortion whores.

Starting with the bone headed purchase on Black Friday, the Crumbleys made a series of massively stupid decisions that devastated a community and ensured their son will spend decades in prison, and may land them in prison for the rest of their lives as well, something inconceivable to them last week in their cushy, privileged lives. I wonder if they have any other kids, because if so, they are now effectively orphaned. All due to a poisonous white supremacist ideology mainstreamed by the NRA that whites have to prepare for an inevitable race war.

I have a daily max on my card of $500. ATM, groceries, whatever. When I bought my Leica I had to have the branch manager approve a one time limit raise to $3000 (more than needed but they prefer that in case I needed to do anything else that day) for that transaction.

They didn’t used to be so accommodating. A number of years ago I was buying a computer. I was in the store trying to check out. Nope. Too much to use a debit card.

I called the bank. Nope. I called the fraud department. Nope. I had to go to the branch, which was like 1000 yards away, and take out $3000 cash to go buy the computer. Suffice it to say that I was pretty unhappy. I’m sure they’ve changed what they do since.

This is not a New Cold War, Russia is not trying to implement a worldwide ideology, but they are aiming to restore the Russian Empire in its old form one way or another.

I guess you’d have to decide whether a cold war has to be ideological or not, and how ideological the later-era Soviet Union was. Lenin’s USSR was definitely ideological and committed to international communism, but by the end of Stalin’s rule it sure looked like good old Russian imperialism with a red coat of paint. The ideology made it an easier sell abroad, though, rather than the current naked authoritarian kleptocracy.

It was amusing to watch the non-celebration of the October Revolution in 2018. Because of the needs of the various internal power factions, the revolution was both the great victory of the working class and birth of the Soviet Union (to Communists and old folks), but also a huge disaster and a crime (to the Orthodox Church and raving monarchists), as well as the grand-daddy of all Color Revolutions which of course are very very bad (the government).

Usually the Kremlin can just say whatever they needed to say to whatever audience was there, but for the hundredth anniversary they couldn’t square the circle for the whole population, so it turned into the ceremonial equivalent of an embarrassed throat-clearing before getting back to fetishizing the Second World War.

Speculating irresponsibly on the plumber who found scads of money stashed in a wall in Joel Olsteen’s church:

Several people have commented that some person might have been skimming when counting the collection plate, and wondering why there were so many cheques, when a cheque (especially one with an expired date) would be tough to cash.

Joel Olsteen reported some time ago there was a robbery from the church office safe in March of 2014, about $200,000 in cash, and $400,000 in cheques. The cash was never recovered.

So what if the robber was actually Joel Olsteen? I imagine there aren’t many people who have the combination to that safe, and it was not reported as forced open. Then the money was stashed behind the wall, and just found by a random plumber working in the church.

I wouldn’t call it fetishizing the Second World War, but there is a lot of historical equivocating going on.

The Romanov Dynasty was corrupt, inept, inbred and ultimately a disaster for the Russian people. There was no way to remove them without a massive, violent upheaval. History has seen this pattern over and over again.

And on the one hand, WW2 was primarily a war between the Red and the Brown Dictators, The Eastern Front made up the major and most decisive theater of operations. Stalin and Hitler were both inhumane barbarian bastards.

On the other hand, the people of the USSR endured unparalleled suffering and offered up heroic sacrifices to maintain their independence (although not necessarily their freedom) that are worthy of recognition.

Keep in mind that anybody born in Germany after 1915 was not an adult when the National Socialists came to power and cannot be taken fully to task for their actions, in a sense, they are also victims of fascism.

These are all historical nuances (like the distinction between independence and freedom) that are hard to package in a slogan or a parade banner.

Christian adoption agency sues Biden admin to keep kids out of loving gay homes (LGBTQ Nation, December 3, 2021)

Ya take federal money, ya follow federal law. On the other hand, I imagine Amy Bony Carrot would have no trouble squaring the United Methodist position with her statements in court that women should just give up children for adoption rather than abort, because lots of loving people want babeez.

A foster agency in Tennessee is suing the Biden administration, saying that its religious freedom is being violated because they don’t want to place children with LGBTQ parents.

The Holston United Methodist Home for Children filed a lawsuit yesterday in federal court against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), alleging that the Department’s rules that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in foster programs that get federal money violates their rights.

Anti-LGBT+ is on the march in every state

Minnesota principal ousted over LGBT flag controversy, lawsuit claims (Park Rapid, Minn. Enterprise, December 1, 2021)

According to the lawsuit, a small group of “anti-LGBTQ middle-school staff, parents, students, and local clergy” pressured the school to remove the flag, which is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride. In response to the push to remove the flag, Thomas began distributing rainbow stickers at the school.

The school eventually removed the flag in August 2021, after Thomas was forced from her position, the complaint said. She had been principal for 16 years.

Thomas claims the Marshall School District targeted her with an investigation, placed her on administrative leave, suspended her without pay and eventually drove her to quit after the district removed her as principal and placed her in a “demeaning” special projects position. She also claims school staff hostile to LGBT causes played a role in her removal and that Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Williams told her he could “make this all go away” if she stepped down.

That they fled makes me really wonder about the little murderer’s upbringing. That his parents were willing to simply cut and run when *they* came under direct scrutiny and being charged begs the question of what sort of responsibility they hold for things beyond their own particular ambitions and how much of that attitude was passed to the son.

In addition, I wonder if the son was brought up in an uncaring home and treated as a liability that was limiting his parents. Which led probably to child raising by throwing toys and distractions in his general direction as long - which cumulated in a gun.
