When I was a kid and that film came out, I was so looking forward to the year 2001. Bit of a disappointment there.

That is a massive understatement. Things were looking pretty good at the end of the 20th Century. 2001 is the year everything started unraveling, and now we are on the brink of a fascist revolution.

I’m already seeing efforts to shift the blame onto the school. The “parental rights” crowd wants you to believe that the school should have kicked the kid out and refused to allow him back until the parents got him help.

That’s not going to work. Rittenhouse murdered “rioters”; people Fox News had already taught their viewers were dangerous radicals. Even they can’t paint unarmed schoolchildren as deserving death, and they won’t even try. The Qanon crowd may claim its another “false flag” operation.

Maybe if Lin Wood was his attorney. No sane attorney would try that. Crumbley’s best chance at avoiding life in an adult penitentiary is some sort of mental illness defense. He may claim years of abuse by his parents or intense bullying at school. But arguing to a jury that he massacred unarmed children in “self-defense” will just outrage the jurors and get his sentence enhanced.

Okay, so Omicron pretty much spreads like wildfire:

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Alameda County and Berkeley public health officials said Friday they’ve identified five East Bay residents with the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The patients, said to be mildly symptomatic, were among 12 COVID cases linked to a Nov. 27 wedding in Wisconsin, which one person attended after traveling internationally.

That’s R-12.

That could be used by his attorney as evidence of their knowledge of their guilt due to the intense abuse they inflicted on him for years, assuming he makes that argument.

it is small comfort, but we’ll burn our way through the fever, and it may be we come out stronger on the other side. if nothing else, this period of madness may wind up breaking libertarianism and unfettered capitalism. What may have to happen is for there to be a persistent level of death from the pandemic amongst the unvaxxed masses. It is not something one wishes for, but if a thousand people a day die from stupidity, by the time 2024 rolls around, that’s roughly 700,000 trump supporters who will not be voting. Survival of the fittest will be in effect, and there isn’t anything that demands “the fittest” be the strongest or richest. One can survive things by being mentally fittest, or adaptable, as well. and that doesn’t mean being a genius—it just means being smart enough to trust scientists over hucksters and carnival barkers.

True, but the GOP is laying the groundwork to declare Trump the winner in 2024 regardless of how many votes he gets.

Aww…mom and pop got caught hiding in a warehouse…sad.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were found on the first floor of an industrial building near where authorities had located their car shortly before they were apprehended, Detroit Police spokesperson Rudy Harper told CNN.

“They appeared to be hiding in the building,” Detroit Police Chief James White said during a news conference early Saturday morning. They were “very distressed” after they were detained, the chief said.

And they were very distressed after they were detained…so close to a Canadian crossing too…

When you see wingnuts inevitably defend the parents, keep in mind that what they’re really defending are the guns. You go to FR or any other wretched hive and they think the parents are total fuck-ups. But the parents being convicted for manslaughter because they were liable is the sort of thing that has sphincters clenching tighter than a vice right now.

Your gun, you’re responsible.
For everything.
Because its yours.
You have total authority.
Even if you hand it to someone else.
Especially a minor.
You’re responsible for controlling who you give it to.
You’re responsible for determining whether they are responsible

If not you, the legal gun owner, then who?

She didn’t. The gun was purchased by a friend of his and stored in his friends step dads house. It also came out in trial that Kyle drove himself to Kenosha the day before the protest for work and then spent the night at his friends house. His mother had nothing to do with it.

as for 2024, the GOP is well on its way to being able to overturn any election results it does not like unless we get proactive and make sure they cannot get away with what they failed to do in 2020

The upshot is I think there’s a fundamental misunderstanding when we say people are “living in two different realities” or victims of misinformation because therein is an assumption that if they had better information they would make a better choice. I don’t think that’s true

They have access to better information literally at their fingertips 24/7. They just choose to ignore it

Aww…mom and pop got caught hiding in a warehouse…sad.

And they were very distressed after they were detained…so close to a Canadian crossing too…

Someone reminded me that the Canadian border is still pretty much closed, so escaping to Canada was really not in the cards. But this really does stick the knife in the idea that they weren’t running. They were ~45 miles from home, in a warehouse. This is not the behavior of people fixing to turn themselves in.

ETA: I realized I used the old Southernism “fixing to”. Not going to apologize, I think it fits just fine.

Maybe they were looking at sneaking across…but they picked a stupid place to try if they were. Far better to drive up through Wisconsin and Minnesota and find a rural crossing. Then again, they’re Trumpers, so thinking isn’t their strong suit.

At this time, in order to enter Canada, you need a valid passport (on the way) a valid CV-19 vax card (check) and a negative PCR test withing the last 3 days. Plus the usual formalities.

Before I ever knew about ASMR (Autonomous sensory meridian response), I used to watch Bob Ross on the local PBS channel because his voice was just so damn soothing. Now I am a Patreon fan of this French guy who lives in Chile and does interesting ASMR videos on all sorts of subjects. I live in a state of low-key anxiety most of the time (it’d be worse without evil psych drugs) and the sound of his voice calms me down so I can relax and maybe even sleep.

Kilgraney Portal Tomb

This collapsed portal tomb is beautifully situated in a hollow just 10 metres north of a babbling stream. I was really excited by my first glimpse of the tomb but as I approached I could see the large 3.9 metre long capstone appears to have slipped off the portal stones. All the stones that make up the chamber have collapsed and the front of the capstone rests on just one stone. I believe this would have been a really nice portal tomb before it fell. It is marked on old OS maps as Cloghabrona or Druid’s Altar. Please check to make sure there is no bull present before entering the field.

Love this guy’s channel, BTW.

I lived in Beckley for nine years. Despite McCracken’s tourist bureau spiel selling the virtues of the place, it was between 1995-2004 a very depressing place in which to live.

A longtime resident there once said to me, “In Beckley, it’s not what you know or who you know that gets things done, it’s what you know about who you know.”

For the sake of my now-grown children, I’m glad we got out of there to New Mexico, where they’d have better opportunities to experience cultural and philosophical diversity.

134
Dr Lizardo  Dec 4, 2021 • 10:15:40am

re: #133 A Three Hour Tour

For me at least, I got the impression that Beckley was one of those places where a double murder would be quite likely to forever go unsolved. Nonetheless, as McCracken said, it’s been so long now the case is ice-cold and will almost certainly remain unsolved.

I was married long before I met The Husband, briefly. My then mom in law was a schoolteacher who lived in Beckley. It reminded me of where my parents and grandparents were/are from in SE Ohio. Small town, lots of older homes in nice neighborhoods, but there was just nothing there. Not even a decent hospital, dentist or more than a couple of doctors for miles. I do like the idea of living in a rural place, but the reality is that it would be really depressing after awhile. The schools sucked too, that’s why my parents packed up and moved us to Columbus before I started school.

When I lived there, they had a couple of hospitals, dentists, and doctors, but most of the doctors seemed to be immigrants from the Middle East, which, given the region’s overwhelming white Christian parochialism and suspicion of outsiders, made certain conversations verrrrry uncomfortable in the weeks and months after 9/11.

That’s another possibility as well. Though water main breaks tend to be well reported along with the usual boil order after water is turned back on. Nothing like that has been reported. And if it was a planned outage, well, we generally get word in advance

I think you’re right. The 60 is longer. I will give them some small credit for decent, though not perfect, trigger discipline so there is no hope danger of a chain reaction AD (Asshole Discharge) mowing down the whole gang.

One commenter suggests that they might be props borrowed from a dealer. There actually is a semi-auto SAW for some reason ($8499 MSRP), as well as semi-auto Uzis and Thompsons. The latter include the infamous Trump edition). Tommy guns are definitely off my Christmas list.

Yes, there are semi-automatic commercial versions of military weapons for sale in many states. I remember the uzi and thompson from 30 years ago. I would not be surprised that there is also an m60 or saw semi model available for the civilian market.

Plus, you can purchase and own automatic firearms, such as the M60 in many states as well. You would need a federal transfer license (used to run about $300) and state permission as well. I believe that some states permit them, some ban them.

The automatic weapons are not cheap. Twenty years ago, they would easily run 5-6 figures.(Tens_of _thousands to hundreds_of_thousands of dollars.) Plus if ammunition is now running 0.50 to $1 a round and these things fire at a rate of several hundred rounds a minute, the ammunition can be pricey.

Finally, there is the question of what exactly, in the civilian world, are automatic weapons useful for. There haven’t been any violent firefights locally in my lifetime.

One thing I loved about Kentucky was that we could go to the local Kroger on Sunday mornings and the place was mostly deserted since church-going was fairly common. Here in NH they think nothing of holding youth sports events on Sunday mornings. I guess the similar phenomenon was game time when Brady was with the Patriots.

Some good news!

The Triumph of Democracy in Honduras
The election results are clear. Now, the U.S. needs to send a strong signal that a military coup will not be tolerated.
washingtonmonthly.com

The results will be some relief to the Biden administration, whose policy to handle the surges of refugees at the southern border is failing. One out of every five migrants that the U.S. Border Patrol “encountered” in fiscal year 2021 were from Honduras. Now, many more thousands of Hondurans who would have fled northward if the old regime had rigged the election will give their country another chance. Interviews on Election Day confirmed that people planned to pack their suitcases if fraud had succeeded.

another quote from the article:

The triumph of democracy in Honduras is not being adequately reported in the mainstream American press. If a similar mass movement had won in eastern Europe, or in Venezuela, there would have been wall-to-wall coverage. Instead, the American media barely noticed until the last minute. In particular, New York Times reports were biased. The correspondent Anatoly Kurmanaev didn’t bother to fly down from Mexico City to cover the election—and he downplayed the prodemocracy angle. Rather, he echoed right-wing Latin American talking points, insinuating that Xiomara Castro’s victory is the second coming of Hugo Chávez, and that she has “ambitious socialist proposals.”

The ‘unique’ mosaic discovered at a Roman villa in Rutland that ‘puts the county on a national and international stage’
countrylife.co.uk

Excavations at a Roman villa in Rutland have discovered a magnificent mosaic that is believed to be unique in Britain.

An elaborate Roman villa complex discovered in Rutland in 2020 has been protected as a Scheduled Monument, after excavators uncovered a 36ft by 23ft floor mosaic depicting the battle between Achilles and Hector during the Trojan War. This is the first example in the UK to show scenes from Homer’s Iliad and one of only a handful across Europe.

For those asking about the disgusting Masse family photo there are:

2 AR-10 .308 rifles
2 AR-15 .223 rifles
1 Semi-auto Uzi (barrel length and fixed stock give it away)
1 reproduction semi-auto M1 Submachine Gun (US WWII version).
And, yes, that is an M-60. What you can’t tell from this photo is if it is a full auto transferable machine gun under NFA rules or a heavily modified semi-auto only belt fed rifle (that may seem an odd phrase but ATF is odd.) My expectation is the latter because the cost of a transferable M-60 is in the $80,000+ range and the cost of belted ammo is $$$$$ too and I’d bet that’s too much for the occasional range day for an insanely highly regulated toy.

Signed: former unit armorer in the Army (which is also why I still prefer AK’s to AR’s but that’s a gun nut argument for a different crowd.)

Yes, I think that you are correct about the upper left ones being AR10’s. I have not used an AR10 since the 1980’s and was wondering if they were Brit L1A1’s. But the magazine well did not seem right.

Good call!

I can remember my father teaching me not to brag about owning guns, for security reasons. Now people have AR silhouette window stickers, and pose for shit like this. I just don’t get it.

To my gun nerd eyes -

Mustache Sparky - .308, CETME or early G3 clone with an AR stock hacked on (just tacky!!)
Colin Hanks - .308 Shorty Para-ish FAL, probably some flavor of DS Arms
School Nurse - 5.56, M16A4 clone (long barrel, no rail)
Flannel Dan - 5.56, Early A1/A2 clone (triangle handguard, long barrel, fixed stock)
Real Estate Rambo - Uhm some kinda 60… Looks like fun, but seriously WTF
Samantha - “Daddy finally got us Uzis”
Stepford Slaughterhouse Queen - Thompson .45, strange though, really triangular rear sight and the furniture looks almost plastic?

Shocking lack of taste and decency all around… Blech

looking at that photo again, it looks like Rhonda’s gun may qualify as an appropriate tool.
