The Houston Chronicle has a paywall, didn’t check to see if the article was unpaywalled, but this extensive thread about the 8 biggest revelations from their Astroworld investigation does have a lot to say.

tl;dr: It was a clusterfuck from the gitgo.

RIP Bob Dole.

Bob Dole was also a hero of science. He was severely wounded, losing the use of his right arm, in Italy in April of 1945. Eleven months later, the wound had still not healed becacuse of a persistent infection that had resisted the new “wonder drug” penicillin. Dole heard about another new drug, streptomycin, and volunteered to be a test subject.

The first person who was treated with streptomycin did not survive; the second person survived but became blind as a side effect of the treatment. In March 1946, the third person—Robert J. Dole, later Majority Leader of the United States Senate and presidential nominee—experienced a rapid and robust recovery.

And on another note, hug those you love closely.

I just noticed a cop car & the morgue wagon at the house two doors down. No idea beyond that, just, that the circle continues without stop and with no regard for us.

From what I understand, there are as many types of cheesesteaks as there are letters in “Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the home of cheesesteaks and bells with cracks in them and the beginning of the country and you get the idea”, and about half of them involve different types of yellow cheese.

Pats was at one time a good steak sandwich. They also got caught selling horse meat steak sandwiches back in the day. I figured I ate at least one. Pats was the one you went to at 2AM and was happy to have.
The neighborhood steak sandwiches were the best. But at 2AM…
Frank Rizzo was mayor and we were there one early morning about 2 or so and his limo pulled up.
“So Frank gets it wit or witout?”

These are shipped through the mail and no just no. Nope.

That is true, but Pat’s and Geno’s (right across the street from Pat’s in South Philly) are generally regarded as the best.

re: #22 The GOP is a terrorist organization

They are not. It’s just tourists come to town want a cheesesteak and Pats and Genos comes up. It’s also south of what used to be a bustling Italian Market on 9th Street. Rocky ran though it in the first Rocky. Half that movie was shot in my old neighborhood. I walked them streets. Grew up on them.
Dalessandros in Roxborough. That is a cheesesteak. Look it up. Small place.
And never buy a “Philly Style” cheese and steak sandwich.

As you know, when I first got to Congress, I was worried that I wasn’t going to be allowed to be sworn in because there was a ban on the hijab. She promised me that she would take care of it. She fulfilled that promise. She’s made another promise to me that she will take care of this. And I believe her.”

Former President Donald Trump had McDonald’s brought to Walter Reed hospital while he was treated for Covid-19 in October 2020, the New York Times reports.

Insider: “Trump’s standard order at McDonald’s consisted of two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish, and chocolate malt… The order totals nearly 2,500 calories or about one day’s worth of food for a man his age.”

Every politician that comes to Philly to stump has got to get a cheesesteak.
Have to.
With cheese wiz and fried onions.
Kerry ordered swiss cheese on his and 5 blocks away on Broad street cars smashed into each other and the world stood still from the concussion of that act.
If you want the populace to think you are just like them, don’t do that.
I thought I had a picture of Mitt Romney holding a Pats cheesesteak like he never ate one. And I think he never did by the looks of it.

My fifth grade teacher who took us to lunch, here in Texas, would make us eat with a fork, everything but hamburgers and hotdogs. With chicken, she would make us pull the meat off the bones and the use a fork. About the only thing I still do is I refuse to bite into a piece of chicken, I will pull the meat off the bone and then put it in my mouth.

The Nebraska Panhandle has been getting more rain over the last several decades.

The article includes a search engine so you can see how rainfall has changed in your area over the last century or more.

During the Mediæval Warming Period, Nebraska’s stabilised sandhills were active dunes similar to the Sahara Desert. It is thought if warming continues, combined with prairie fires, it will kill off much of the vegetation here and the dunes will become active again. That which is packed into sandstone would quickly erode in the endless high winds here.

Philly Union and New York City FC are playing for All The MSL Marbles.
Union home field in Chester.
It’s heating up. At 67 minutes it’s tied.

I was incorrect. I’ve been following the Union sporadically. Not the finals, the Conference Finals.
And they lost. They were also down 11 or so players.
Covid protocols.
But the pandemic is over.
Yeah.

Some incels are hailing the Oxford High School shooter as the new Elliot Rodger (We Hunted the Mammoth)

I haven’t seen the incels this excited by a shooter in a long time.

On Tuesday afternoon, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley reportedly emerged from a bathroom at his high school with a gun in his hand — and opened fire on his fellow students, moving “methodically” down the hall shooting his panicked classmates at short range, police said. Three died that day; one other died of his injuries in the hospital; seven were injured, some severely.

The incels watching the story unfold in the media hailed the alleged shooter as a new incel “saint,” agreeing that despite his relatively small “body count” Crumbley had chosen his targets well.

No disease in modern times has ever been eradicated by so-called natural immunity. The two diseases which have (smallpox and rinderpest) were eliminated with mass-vaccinations. Polio is on the ropes now for the same reason.

Plus a vaccine provides natural immunity.

My gut take is that religious-right women indeed are fine with having lesser ability to choose their own health decisions.

And even the non-religious-right but still white-suburban women will strongly bend towards the Trumpist agenda, which is propped up the the religious right political machine.

Right now I can’t decide how energized Democrats will be in 2022. I fear many young people just won’t care to vote, even if USSC overturns Roe.

Something to think about: If the GOP does well in 2022, that increases the chances Trump regains power in 2024.

If Trump wins in 2024 he’s basically guaranteed at least one more SCOTUS seat (Breyer), which would make it a 7-2 Conservative court.

I’ve mentioned before that I don’t think enough people will care till people _they know_ start dying. It’s like gay rights. Huge numbers opposed it until someone in their family came out of the closet. Gay marriage turned a similar corner and transrights are moving that way. Younger people (50 or less) really don’t understand what it’s like to live without access to abortion or contraception and until they see the consequence (their friends/relations dying) that didn’t happen before.

Note that guns are not in this - kids have been dying all along and even 20 kindergarteners at a time aren’t enough to make sufficient people care.

I have no doubt that Trump would like the attention.

And that many Republicans want him to run in 2024.

But the reality is he is getting quite old now (like Biden), and he is not going to age well. Even now there are no long, impromptu discussions by Trump in, say, a townhall setting.

Even with America’s appetite for Trumpist politics, at some point Trump will fail to deliver in front of a crowd.

And that also applies to Biden, who while being more intelligent and well educated (to say nothing of well mannered) than Trump, is also going to project more and more frailty going forward.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Dec 5, 2021 • 3:15:14pm

The reality of 2024 is that both the Democrats and Republicans need younger candidates.

How this is going to play out is an open question in my mind.

The 2022 midterms are crucial for many reasons. Not only to keep Biden from being checkmated in Congress, but the results of 2022 midterms will paint the landscape for 2024.

This may be out of date, but — I remember trying to convince women to vote against Bush because abortion, because judges and Roe, but they all told me that they were voting tax rates, and they weren’t worried about Roe because “oh, that’s a long-settled decision, they won’t try to take that back.” This was long enough ago that most of those specific women are past menopause and abortion is no longer a personal issue for them, but I have to assume that enough of them have daughters and nieces for it to matter to them, and they certainly no longer think “it’s settled, Roe isn’t in danger.”
