The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bob Boilen | December 13, 2021
What a remarkable sight to see the reunion of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss gathered around a couple of microphones in Nashville. It’s been 14 years since their surprising and remarkable album Raising Sand and now they’re back at Sound Emporium, the studio where they recorded some of that first record and the entirety of their new album Raise The Roof.

Huddled in the control room are an all-star cast of musicians, with Jay Bellerose on drums, JD McPherson on guitar, Dennis Crouch on upright bass, Stuart Duncan on guitars and ukulele, and Viktor Krauss on electric bass and guitar. All of these folks minus JD McPherson played on the original recordings of the songs you’ll hear in this Tiny Desk (home) concert.

They kick it off with the rockabilly sounds of “Can’t Let Go,” a song originally recorded by Lucinda Williams and written by Randy Weeks. For their second number, Robert Plant recalls a song he first heard as a 15-year-old listening to some great R&B by Bobby Moore & the Rhythm Aces. He and Alison Krauss put their hearts and harmonies into a cover of that song, “Searching For My Love.” Alison takes the lead on the final tune “Trouble With My Lover,” written by Allen Toussaint and recorded in the ’60s by the “Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul,” Betty Harris. These interpretations are delicate, gripping and so damn special.

I can’t believe how good Robert Plant is singing. None of that upper-end screech any more, but he’s nailing the pitch much more than he used to. There are a couple of Zep songs where his pitch is so bad it’s hard for me to listen.

I love the Lucinda song. Fun to see Viktor. There used to be a video of he and one of his friends driving around our old high school pretending to be the kind of guys who do “grit laps” around the school shared among my friend’s younger siblings’ friends (he’s four years younger than we are).

And yes, Robert Plant’s vocals are amazing. I think he kind of preferred this kind of thing all along and really grew tired of Jimmy Page’s weird shit over the years.

‘Tis, but on the other hand, that doesn’t necessarily translate to a large amount of liquid water come springtime. Teleskiguy would know. Maybe he could pop in and tell us. I know that it varies by air temperature.

Moisture content. Wet, heavy snow has more water than powder. That’s why skiers like a good base of heavy snow covered in a layer of powder.

Considering the amount of rain we’re getting in the Bay Area, I’m going to guess the Sierras are getting a lot of water content too. Not for nothing is the snow up there generally known as “Sierra cement.”

On a lot of Zep songs, he was clearly out of his natural range.

The older he got, the more prone he was to sing songs within his normal range, as a soloist.

It’s a shame that he didn’t demand they key the songs to his voice in LedZep rather than to the music as written.

It’s obvious that Plant really enjoyed this with Alison

Always loved weather maps. Here’s the whole world, windspeed in the upper atmosphere where the pressure is just 1% of what it is down here.

As you can see, there is a big eye right over Redmond.

This proves that Bill Gates is controlling the weather.

JK Rowling, who went and created characters who could morph into any other character with polyjuice potion, could change memories with a spell, and turn into other forms (animagus), will draw the line with someone who comes out as trans?

Yeah, it makes no sense at all.

The Air Force gave its forces until Nov. 2 to get the vaccine, and thousands have either refused or sought an exemption.

Air Force spokeswoman Ann Stefanek said Monday that these are the first to be administratively discharged for reasons involving the vaccine.

She said all of them were in their first term of enlistment, so they were younger, lower-ranking personnel.

It does not love me. I’ll have a bourbon every once in a bit, but gin pulls me in and then gives me a kidney punch. In fact, when I finish this last bit of work I’m going to have a small taste of Jim Beam Black.

That’s the power of the Great Both Sides Lie.

95+% of the mainstream media (i.e. discounting Faux News) is absolutely committed to the farcical proposition that the GOP is a perfectly normal center-right political party.

Then, compounding the absurdity, GOP views on everything are taken to be a self-justifying default, such that only Democrats have to explain to a hostile press how their ideas will work in practice.

Meanwhile, nearly every idiotic proposal by a Republican is met with drooling credulity.
