J.D. Crowe passes - none finer on the five string banjo

Another giant passes in the world of three finger banjo. J.D. Crowe died in the early hours of this morning in hospice care at home. He was 84 years of age.

The Crowe family has not commented on his cause of death, but we know that J.D. had been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) this past two years.

His place in the pantheon of banjo players is certain. Among those who followed the example of Earl Scruggs, Crowe was perhaps the first to rise as a disciple of the new style who not only made it his own, but did so with a precision and power that set him apart from the herd. Along with Sonny Osborne, who died following a stroke earlier this year at 83, a young J.D. Crowe drew attention in his first major professional job, playing banjo with Jimmy Martin & The Sunny Mountain Boys.

Interesting line-up for the new Tull record:

The Zealot Gene is Jethro Tull’s second studio album this century, and the first since The Jethro Tull Christmas Album in 2003. Alongside founder Ian Anderson, the current line-up of the band includes guitarist Joe Parrish-James, drummer Scott Hammond, pianist John O’Hara, and bassist David Goodier. Florian Opahle also plays guitar on the album.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley has tested positive for COVID-19, his office announced Friday.

“Today, after being alerted that I came into contact earlier this week with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, I have also tested positive for the Coronavirus,” the mayor said in a statement.

The mayor says he has been fully vaccinated, received a booster shot and that he is only experiencing mild symptoms. His son and wife have tested negative for the virus at this time.

“I have reached out to everyone I came into contact with this week encouraging them to get tested. Please wear your masks, get vaccinated, and get boosted. I urge everyone to exercise caution this holiday season,” said Cranley.

Barefoot Grin  Dec 24, 2021 • 12:55:20pm

I’m feeling stiff and achy today, but I think it may be due to the shingles vax I got yesterday (first of two). Most places I went shopping yesterday and today folks were mostly masked, but I’ve heard that omicron easily runs past ill-fitting masks and my surgical mask is hard to keep securely stuck to my face. I’ll get a test if I still feel blah tomorrow. We’re nowhere near the kinds of lines we’re seeing in NYC and other cities, but it’s still a PITA. CVS and Walgreens both told me they won’t have rapid home tests in stock until at least early January.

I had a chain of associations just a moment ago. I was thinking how my uncle used to love egg nog. He didn’t need the extra calories, but he had so little in life that my mom used to make sure he could help himself when he came for Christmas. Then I remembered drinking something like egg nog when we went to my grandparents’ in Georgia on Christmas, but it was something called syllabub or sillibub. It’s not as thick as egg nog, but is made with curdled cream and usually a light wine. My grandparents were serious Christians and called themselves teetotalers, but instead of wine they used Jim Beam. Anyway, they had a special pump that would mix the ingredients to make it frothy. It was distinctly potable.

Those taking the two-shot series might be behind the curve. I started with it becuse the New, Good, Stuff was not available here. Shortly after, I was in the 50% of people who still had an outbreak, though it was probably greatly attenuated by the vax. When the local pharm stocked the new shot (Shingrix) I got it too. It’s a single shot, and proven a good bit more effective.

Maybe it’s just me, but the posturing in statements like that (from the Lincoln Project) sounds more and more like the histrionics coming from the wingnuts themselves.

Also a pet peeve of mine - there is no “tide of history”. History is whatever the historian wants to write.

Example, let me rewrite the first sentence:

On the eve of Christmas 1776, one of the richest white land owners, and slave owner, in the colonies led a group of poorly trained and poorly paid terrorists across the Delaware River to attack the legitimate government of the colonies.

History is a matter of perspective.

Doesn’t Shingrix require 2 shots? I got the single shot vaccine years ago, and 2 months later had the shingles, a very unpleasant experience but maybe milder because of the vaccination.

Looked it up: yes, Shingrix is the two shot version. The previous single shot was Zostavax, which is not as effective as Shingrix.

Shingrix lasts at least 4 years, and maybe longer. So boosters might be necessary. Ugh! I guess I’ll talk to my doctor.

I’m alone for Xmas which is fine by me, but my real problem is that for some reason I have RELENTLESS VIOLENT HICCUPS that will not abate.

As I never get tired of telling my west African family, hiccups are one of the clearest diagnostic signs of Ebola.

I gather Shingrix really wipes you out. A FB friend commented that the 2nd shot was unpleasant but not as bad as the first shot. He suffered from aches, chills, and exhaustion. Given my first hand experience, I’d rather suffer that than shingles again.

Just as we relocated to Japan for Diss research my partner got shingles (she had a violent case of flu beforehand and the stress of the international move was intense because we had a 7mo infant, too). That occupied our first month there. She was only in her early 30s at the time.

Dozens of holiday flights canceled at Detroit Metro Airport as COVID-19 cases surge

The Grinch didn’t steal Christmas, but the omicron variant of COVID-19 just might.

As of 1:30 p.m., 34 flights coming into and out of Detroit Metro Airport were canceled, and another 33 are delayed Friday, according to FlightAware. On Christmas Day, 11 flights are already canceled.

Airlines are citing large numbers of their crews calling out sick as COVID-19 cases grow exponentially across the country.

The delays and cancellations are due to a “combination of issues, including but not limited to, potential inclement weather in some areas and the impact of the omicron variant,” according to a Delta statement shared with USA TODAY.

The omicron variant is fast-spreading and is proving to be much more contagious than the delta variant; omicron now accounts for more than 70 percent of new cases in the U.S., according to the CDC.

Detroit Metro Airport did not respond to a request for comment.

The cancellations will likely continue past Christmas and through Sunday, Delta told USA TODAY.

Huh. I had a single Shingles shot some years ago, and then was told it was not that effective, and I needed the new two-shot version. I’ll check on Shingrix when it is safer to come out after the holidays.

Edit: Shingrix IS the two-shot version. I looked it up, below.

The old shingles one-shot vaccine was called Zostavax. Shingrix came out before I turned 50, so I never got Zostavax, but I was told Shingrix was much more effective.

I got a little flu-like for a day after the 2nd Shingrix shot - kind of the same thing that happened on my 2nd covid shot.

There are some actual supply chain issues around baby/infant stuff. Formula.

Specific kinds of Similac are out of stock at everywhere from Target to Costco to Walmart and even Amazon. We know people who are looking for this. But you can easily find other formula and powder of same formulation. Ready to pour is the one in short supply or out of stock.

Every Target I’ve been in has plenty of baby stuff. Same with buybuyBaby and Amazon has everything else.

No issues.

Merry Christmas to those celebrating the day and hope to spend it with family or friends (or friends who are family), or with those that you love. That’s really what the holidays are about - not the materialistic stuff. It’s an excuse to be with loved ones if you can. Covid has made it real hard the past year and change and there are many folks around the world who can’t be with family or friends they want to be with for safety reasons. It sucks something fierce, but we can get through even this with sensible precautions and science.

We woke up this morning to a light dusting of snow, so that totally put us in the holiday mood. If only it stuck around for tomorrow, which is going to be a wet and raw washout here - cold rain, not snow.

Errands this week.
Groceries. Ralphs has wine on sale. Full shelves. Costco had fewer choices of cat litter. The cats don’t give a crap. Chicken and pork up a bit, beef a lot.

Duct sealant. (AC on the roof at work leaking) The local AC supply houses were out of duct sealant. But Grainger and Lowes had it. Conduit and tent fittings for a little spray booth. Home Depot had the 3/4 pipe on sale. The conduit fittings are all on the shelf. Very few gaps in store shelves at any of these places.

What shortages? Sure some stuff got more expensive but it appears the whole supply chain moved as fast as possible. That does not happen for free. Watch by Easter beef comes down.

And that is why the next variant will have a 50/50 chance of being worse than Omicron, and the next variant, and the next. Eventually, we may be looking at something beyond our Elder God nightmares. Dread Cthulhu walking the streets.

Wishing everyone a happy and merry holiday, even if you don’t celebrate. What I really wish is that the coming year is one of love, hope, joy, happiness and mostly love and support whatever the day, time or place. And at least some peace, every day. I also want to thank you for the support and love so many have you have sent my way over the years and especially recently. I wish I could hug all of you in person. ❤️

I am sad, my birth family and I are estranged and it’s likely never to be resolved. I have my son and my husband, my puppy and a roof over our heads. Those are all good things and I will do my best to appreciate and love what I have. Which is a lot. But I don’t like this time of year anymore and I am not sure how to manage that. It’s been a really rough few years and I have to figure out how to go forward from here. I feel so far from normal, like nothing is ever going to be right again. I’m tired, so, so tired. I have so many reasons to get up in the morning, but I am still struggling. But a new year and a fresh start are coming, so I hope all of us can get through obstacles and struggles and come out on the other side, growing, learning and finding what brings us love and joy and the things we need to be safe and healthy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

The ground is still shaking on the peninsula:

Stars are over magnitude 3, the big stars over M4.

Cluster on the right is at the recent volcano. Actually, just to the east, where the lava flowed into Meradalir valley, and under “Big Ram” mountain (the tallest hill in the area.)

Concern is about the cluster on the left. It’s right next to the town of Grindavik, and it’s geothermal power plant.

None of this may turn into an actual flow of lava at the surface, but some are hoping for a Christmas day eruption at Fagradalsfjall.

Here in the UK the group of adults who aren’t getting vaccinated for whatever reason are the Young Immortals aged between 18 and 39, maybe a bit older. That age group reached about 75% fully vaccinated three months ago but it hasn’t increased noticeably since. The proportion of people aged 50-plus who are fully vaccinated is close to 100% and most of them (including myself) have already received a booster shot.
