Just in time for Christmas, Joni Mitchell has debuted the first official music video for “River,” her wistful contribution to the Christmas songbook, taken from her landmark 1971 album Blue.

Animation by Skazka Studios
Directed by Matvey Rezanov, in memory of his father Mikhail Rezanov

Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967) has been nominated for the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. It is the 17th Grammy nomination Mitchell has received since her first in 1969. To date, she has won nine Grammy Awards. That could change on Monday, January 31 when the 64th Annual Grammy Awards show will be broadcast live on CBS.

A few days before the show, the Recording Academy will honor Mitchell as its 2022 MusiCares Person of the Year during a star-studded event on January 29. Jon Baptiste, Black Pumas, Brandi Carlile, Leon Bridges, Mickey Guyton, Herbie Hancock, Graham Nash, Maggie rogers, and James Taylor are among the artists set to perform at the show, which will raise funds for MusiCares’ charitable programs and relief efforts.

Welcome to the official YouTube channel of Joni Mitchell, whose songs “River,” “Both Sides Now,” “California,” and albums ‘Clouds,’ ‘Ladies of the Canyon’ and ‘Blue’ compose only a fragment of a multi-disciplinary artistic output that has been embraced across generations, inspired multitudes of artists, and earned every conceivable accolade.

One of the world’s most remarkable and beloved artists, Mitchell has influenced musicians across a vast cross-section of genres with her ethereal songs that reflect social and environmental ideals. The prolific singer-songwriter-painter-poet has not only written and produced her music, but also designed most of her album covers and packaging. A journey into Joni Mitchell’s artistry is one of a highly original, harmonically innovative, and emotionally charged, familiar yet fresh adventure.

My understanding is that the texts involved were between Project Veritas and their lawyers.

Attorney/client privilege. Which is kind of important.

When I first read about it I wasn’t happy. It is Project Veritas after all. But these are private communications between them and their lawyers.

The law has to protect everybody or it protects nobody.

Sorry, gotta disagree.
Even though it’s Project Veritas (who deserve nothing but hard luck and trouble on general principles, to say the least), if there’s an issue over the NYT’s obtaining their shit, it’s gotta be properly adjudicated by a court. And that’s the ACLU’s job : even though PV should go vigorously get fucked, IMHO, the next time it might be someone less loathsome….

The law protects people from a court ordering the release of this info by the lawyer and from the info being used in a court case. The law does not prevent NYT or anyone else from publishing said info unless it can be shown that NYT obtained it illegally. It’s on veritas and their lawyers to keep their shit secret; if it gets leaked they can’t cry privilege. This was an absurd ruling by the judge.

For what it’s worth, the Times has denied that they obtained it illegally. This could be a whistleblower situation.

It’s a ‘known fact’ in right wing circles that the FBI leaked the info to NYT. Of course there’s no evidence of it, and even if that were the case, NYT could still publish it.

A bit optimistic I think but it could happen.

I am not a huge fan of Beto but I will, of course, support him if he is the nominee.
The AR-15 ban promise was reckless, unnecessary and, overall, the wrong hill to die on. Nevertheless, there is enough overlap between AR-15 owners and anti-vaxx nuts that a good many of them may be ineligible to vote by November (ie dead). That could help swing things Beto’s way. That he will be a better governor than Abbott goes without saying since practically anyone would be better than a mass murdering satan.

Did a quick search and it’s from Myrtle Beach SC and it’s an Osprey. In Fenwick Island Delaware, right next to Ocean City Maryland, we used to stay at an oceanside rental cottage one or two weeks a summer. There was always Osprey hunting right in front of us for a few hours a day.
They would glide and circle and then do a drop that increased in speed until they slammed into the water.
Then they would raise up out of the water and just SHAKE that water off.
Never saw one come up without a fish. Not one. For over a decade. Not. One.
And if you look at that video, Ospreys always fly with their prey head first. Aerodynamics.
Ospreys are engineers of air and space and beautiful to watch.
They would fly right over us back to the bays behind us where the nests were.
And then come back and impress us again.

For awhile in 2008 he tried to cosplay as a decent man, a “compassionate conservative” with an awareness of history.

When race came up in that race, he talked about he remembered segregation in his childhood and he was amazed black people weren’t a hundred times angrier than they seemed to be. When the Clintons were discussed, he pointed out that they worked through their marital issues, they stayed together, they raised a fine daughter, this was the admirable way to deal with adultery….

It’s a quid-quo-pro, EU scientists get time on the James Webb in exchange for ESA providing the launch vehicle plus services such as flight comms etc., but still a mention to “our friends in ESA who worked alongside NASA for years to make this happen” or some such would have been nice.

In case anyone here is in need of a bit of really great reading, Dave Grohl’s memoir “The Storyteller” is exquisite.

That’s part of my recent Amazon shopping spree. I also bought Miami Steve’s Unrequired Infatuations, Willie Nelson’s Letters to America, Springsteen/Obama Renegades, the 1619 Project and The Matter of Black Lives (both compilations of some previously published material and newer essays).

If you can track down any of the TV interviews Springsteen and Obama did to promote the book, they’re so sweet together, talking about how “after a certain age, and a certain level of fame, it’s really hard to make new friends you can get close to.” This relationship apparently means a lot to both of them.

My parents were born and raised in NYC. I was born and raised in SoCal. The reason that happened is because Dad came to UCLA for his internship and residency, intending to move back to NY. after training But on Christmas Eve, after working a double shift, he walked out of the hospital in short sleeves, looked around the parking lot at all the the convertibles with the tops down, and the palm trees, and told himself “I don’t care if I never see Brooklyn again.” And he never did. “The only thing I’ll miss about Brooklyn is the Dodgers.” A year later, the trolley dodgers announced they were following him out there.

It was meant to be.

In my late 20s I honeymooned in Kauai. Wife was crashed out sleeping and I looked in the phone book at businesses that could employ me.

She left me a year later and a year after that I met a little sweetie who grew up in Hawaii. We visited Big Island and again, she was asleep and I’m in the phone book looking for businesses that could employ me.

7 months later I’m in 10 lanes of traffic on 101 in Palo Alto at 10:30 Monday morning. Cell phone rings.

‘This is super top secret’
‘Whos getting fired?’
‘Nobody’
‘Whos banging who?’
‘Dude it’s not like that.’
‘Then why the hush hush?’
‘That rumor of work in Hawaii is full bore. Would you consider going out and starting an office?’
‘Dont talk to anybody else. I’m your guy.’

It’s so awful that this is where we are. I worry about parking lots for workers at hospitals and medical facilities/offices. I am blessed to live in an area with a big hospital and tons of specialty practices, labs, surgery centers etc. Lots of parking garages too. At night it was a little scary, leaving to come home from there the 12th to the 20th, but I am always a worried mom. But the world ain’t always kind either. So you develop radar.

I was lucky not to see people being assholes to medical professionals and all the other workers that make a hospital or any medical service operate. But I heard stories. And saw lots of exhausted people wanting to save lives and just being so tired. We took an already broken system and then tested it to the absolute limits by having shit for leadership in a pandemic. And then because we’re so special, citizens have decided they know better than doctors and nurses and decide assault and violence is just fine.

We should thank the heavens and stars that anyone wants to even do the jobs these people do every day. We’re so mean and ungrateful as a society, we have to do better.

Vegetable Casserole (my pre-Xmas cooking)

My brother and sister-in-law make vegetarian galettes quite often for dinner. A savory tart built around roasted squash, beans, cheese, and onions this past Thanksgiving. I started emulating it as a casserole at home since skipping the pastry surround would be less carbs (and unfortunately not quite as tasty.)

Might try something like that myself since we don’t feel compelled to eat meat at every meal and our son and daughter-in-law are vegetarians.

Yesterday was Xmas Eve dinner at our house-family and 2 close friends for a total of 10 3/4 people (10 adults, a toddler and an infant.) It was so nice to be able to gather again with vaccinated, boostered people. I spent the entire day in the kitchen, but it was totally worth it (plus we have leftovers to see us through a couple more days.)
Today we went over to our daughter and son-in-law’s, joined by son and daughter-in-law for the Opening of the Gifts-primarily grandkids’ gifts. Laid back and enjoyable, although the toddler in the group ended up overwhelmed and needing some quiet time, which she went off to enjoy by herself. She is surprisingly mature about needing some ‘time out’ and taking it.
The drive was a little less enjoyable as it was raining pretty heavily at times, but definitely worth it.

I think this is something we have to figure out how to fight effectively. There has to be a fight too, they won’t stop until they are stopped. They are mean, dumb and like being both. A lot. Consequences matter here, but how we fix this is a lot of things, not just one or two things. It’s exhausting.

Roasted squash and cannellini beans along with onions that have been sautéed for some caramelization. Rest of the filling I used was ricotta cheese, a beaten egg, and then more cheese (cubes of smoked gouda and both shredded gruyere and parmesan.) It reheats fairly well for use as leftovers as well.

I was also tossing in diced green chiles and a bit of cumin as a spicing change-up.

And I suspect that the cheese and egg “base” can handle a lot of other combinations with it.

I’ve done that a dozen times in practice. Takes about forty five minutes to offload a lift if the patrol works in small teams of three. A piece of bamboo and a flick of the arm is all it takes to get over the chair derailer and walk down to the next.

Then have someone climb the next tower to move the rope over. Bring the rescue t bar up and put someone on belay. Ten seconds later the skier is on the ground.
