It appears that Google Maps may have guided weary Lake Tahoe travelers to closed-off and even dangerous roads amid record-setting snowfall.

This is in direct contrast to Caltrans’ messaging to avoid workarounds. One time my wife and I were near Estes Park, Colorado driving through a steady snowfall (but not an out and out blizzard). Our GPS suddenly routed us off the main highway and on to a narrow, winding road that it felt like we were on for 45 minutes. We lost all cell reception and passed no homes or structures to speak of. Eventually, we did safely merge back up with the main highway but there were definitely some tense moments on that drive.

Perhaps in the operating room case, this *might* be a valid point.
But in the case of the unvaxxed, treating them just empowers they to immediately go back out on the street & start harming other people.

There are a *LOT* of employees waking up around the country and realizing that they do, actually, have worth. Because they are the people who actually do the work.
The manager here sounds like a true nightmare. Using every guilt-trip tactic in the book to try to pressure the employee to come back to work so they can continue to abuse & exploit him.
Like all bullies, when you refuse to play their game, they start to whine and cry.

This one is especially good in that they apparently didn’t have a back up…I mean I’ve left jobs where it took them some time to realize all the gaps that created, but nothing on this scale. And while we had a bit of brain drain during Covid where I am, no role was so critical (though it appeared so at the time) that anyone couldn’t have their work picked up by someone else. Sounds like this guy just automated the fuck out of his job and was able to do basic maintenance and enjoy an okay work-life balance. And he does have everything documented - the problem for his boss is he’s too panicked to ask anyone to come in and read the documentation.
Also, his initial ask of 80 bucks an hour tells me he was already underpaid for the value he provided the company. If he was doing as much as it appears for under a buck-fifty he’ll make that difference up in salary in no time. Then again, I’m thinking in Bay Area wages and we’re a bit higher than the national average.

The manager was most definitely an asshole but the real problem with this one is that whatever company he was waiting on to send over data apparently waited until the last fucking minute to do it. Had they done it in a timely fashion, this all would have been avoided.
Not that any of this excuses the company trying to rescind his week off and not having a backup, but still.

I can understand the company being in a bind, but it is not incumbent on the employee to single-handedly save the client from $750k fine. The employee communicated that he needed the data by X date to get it done before his vacation. The client failed to deliver, and the company failed to communicate the hard deadline after which they could no longer guarantee compliance. Then the manager decided to make the employee the scapegoat by canceling his vacation, and when that failed to produce the desired result, threatened him until he resigned. This isn’t all on the client, but between the client and the employer, there is plenty of blame to go around.

The “next time” is happening right now, in front of everyone’s faces. All Republican efforts now are to delegitimize elections in general. The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship was cancelled Wednesday after four days of play due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
In the past two days, the United States, Czechia and Russia each had to forfeit a preliminary-round game after players tested positive for COVID-19.
The United States forfeited its game against Switzerland on Tuesday and entered quarantine after two players tested positive for the virus. On Wednesday, Czechia forfeited its game against Finland after one player tested positive and Russia forfeited its game against Slovakia when one player tested positive.
The decision was made during a meeting Wednesday.
“Together with the teams, we came into this event with full confidence in the COVID-19 protocols put in place by the IIHF, the LOC, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and the Public Health Agency of Canada,” IIHF President Luc Tardif said. “The ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the omicron variant forced us to readjust our protocols almost immediately upon arrival to attempt to stay ahead of any potential spread. This included daily testing and the team quarantine requirement when positive cases were confirmed.
“We owed it to the participating teams to do our best to create the conditions necessary for this event to work. Unfortunately, this was not enough. We now have to take some time and focus on getting all players and team staff back home safely.”
The IIHF had previously taken some flack for cancelling a Womens junior tournament before a game was even played while also doing everything they could to guarantee the Men’s tournament would be played.
Covid, it appears, had other plans.
