“Damn backseat drivers!”

I felt like this every time I took passengers on my much-beloved, long-departed motorcycle.

This will probably soon be a Yamaha commercial. “So simple to operate, even a monkey can drive them.”

To which the snarky rejoinder will obviously be: “And all too often, does.”

I really, REALLY hope this is an omen of the year to come: Fox shitting on Trump. (Taken on a golf course that commenters INSIST is the Trump course in Ireland, but I suspect that would be too perfect.)

In a similar vein, this image represents to me the best possible outcome of the year ahead: Rupert Murdoch tires of the endless whining of the former Toddler-In-Chief, and unleashes his attack dogs on all things Trump.

The whining will be intense. But it’s the only way that the Evil Conservatives have a hope in hell of winning elections in the midterms.

Google Maps may have led Tahoe travelers astray during snowstorm

It appears that Google Maps may have guided weary Lake Tahoe travelers to closed-off and even dangerous roads amid record-setting snowfall.

*snip*

Other dispatches from Twitter allege that the service — particularly its mobile app — directed people to closed-off highways, mountain passes and lakeside roads to get around. This is in direct contrast to Caltrans’ messaging to avoid workarounds. Caltrans District 3 spokesperson Steve Nelson told SFGATE on Monday that they were seeing drivers trying to skirt highway closures with side streets. “They’ll take side roads and try and sneak past the closures, and that never ends well,” he said.

One time my wife and I were near Estes Park, Colorado driving through a steady snowfall (but not an out and out blizzard). Our GPS suddenly routed us off the main highway and on to a narrow, winding road that it felt like we were on for 45 minutes. We lost all cell reception and passed no homes or structures to speak of. Eventually, we did safely merge back up with the main highway but there were definitely some tense moments on that drive.

Can we just … stop treating people who actively try to sabotage the medical treatment of others?

If you run into an operating room and shoot the surgical staff and then fall and hit your head … do the survivors REALLY have a duty to save your life?

Yes, they do, because the justice system handles punishment.

It’s awful, and it’s been like this for years. The only ones making any real money from streaming music are the streaming companies.

Interesting that Napster (they’re still around?) is actually paying more than any other service, when they began as outright piracy.

Glad that you and the Mrs made it out okay. These things can go really wrong in the mountains.

There is a section later in the article where a tech bro tries to defend Google. I didn’t post it because it would have made the quoted section too large.

I think that many years ago, Randall of XKCD posted his experience with the driving instructions. It sent him to a ferry in the middle of no-where. In the middle of the night. When the ferry only ran a few times a day. And only during the day.

Yes, they do, because the justice system handles punishment.

Perhaps in the operating room case, this *might* be a valid point.

But in the case of the unvaxxed, treating them just empowers they to immediately go back out on the street & start harming other people.

There are no consequences to their evil actions.

This needs to change.

Khal Wimpo (free internal organs upon request!)  Dec 29, 2021 • 12:16:46pm

There are a *LOT* of employees waking up around the country and realizing that they do, actually, have worth. Because they are the people who actually do the work.

The manager here sounds like a true nightmare. Using every guilt-trip tactic in the book to try to pressure the employee to come back to work so they can continue to abuse & exploit him.

Like all bullies, when you refuse to play their game, they start to whine and cry.

re: #16 Khal Wimpo (free internal organs upon request!)

This one is especially good in that they apparently didn’t have a back up…I mean I’ve left jobs where it took them some time to realize all the gaps that created, but nothing on this scale. And while we had a bit of brain drain during Covid where I am, no role was so critical (though it appeared so at the time) that anyone couldn’t have their work picked up by someone else. Sounds like this guy just automated the fuck out of his job and was able to do basic maintenance and enjoy an okay work-life balance. And he does have everything documented - the problem for his boss is he’s too panicked to ask anyone to come in and read the documentation.

Also, his initial ask of 80 bucks an hour tells me he was already underpaid for the value he provided the company. If he was doing as much as it appears for under a buck-fifty he’ll make that difference up in salary in no time. Then again, I’m thinking in Bay Area wages and we’re a bit higher than the national average.

re: #16 Khal Wimpo (free internal organs upon request!)

The manager was most definitely an asshole but the real problem with this one is that whatever company he was waiting on to send over data apparently waited until the last fucking minute to do it. Had they done it in a timely fashion, this all would have been avoided.

Not that any of this excuses the company trying to rescind his week off and not having a backup, but still.

I can understand the company being in a bind, but it is not incumbent on the employee to single-handedly save the client from $750k fine. The employee communicated that he needed the data by X date to get it done before his vacation. The client failed to deliver, and the company failed to communicate the hard deadline after which they could no longer guarantee compliance. Then the manager decided to make the employee the scapegoat by canceling his vacation, and when that failed to produce the desired result, threatened him until he resigned. This isn’t all on the client, but between the client and the employer, there is plenty of blame to go around.

And how much you want to bet that if the guy had come back and done the work, his manager would have gotten a bonus for getting things taken care of and the employee would get nothing beyond his usual salary?

Heck, they were “rewarding” him by stripping him of his vacation time they weren’t letting him use!

re: #25 Charles Johnson

The “next time” is happening right now, in front of everyone’s faces. All Republican efforts now are to delegitimize elections in general. Republicans everywhere are being installed in election boards, Attorney Generals, DA’s, Sheriff and police departments out in the open not to protect and serve but to overthrow democracy itself and usher in a white supremacist autocracy. The closest analogy would be Putin’s Russia but the end result would not mirror it but be an American take on it… commercialized, flag-waving ignorance and entitlement.

The object is to return the US to Founding Father levels of white male superiority and supremacy. This is why they carry little Constitutions around and revere Founding Fathers. They don’t recognize the nuance, intellectual curiosity, and Age of Enlightenment meta that greatly influenced many of their minds and actions. All they want is the 100% white male power back and the notion that they can do with women/girls and minorities as they will.

This ongoing coup is as much about sex as it is about race and power.

Another sporting event bites the dust due to Omicron:

The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship was cancelled Wednesday after four days of play due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

In the past two days, the United States, Czechia and Russia each had to forfeit a preliminary-round game after players tested positive for COVID-19.

The United States forfeited its game against Switzerland on Tuesday and entered quarantine after two players tested positive for the virus. On Wednesday, Czechia forfeited its game against Finland after one player tested positive and Russia forfeited its game against Slovakia when one player tested positive.

The decision was made during a meeting Wednesday.

“Together with the teams, we came into this event with full confidence in the COVID-19 protocols put in place by the IIHF, the LOC, Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services and the Public Health Agency of Canada,” IIHF President Luc Tardif said. “The ongoing spread of COVID-19 and the omicron variant forced us to readjust our protocols almost immediately upon arrival to attempt to stay ahead of any potential spread. This included daily testing and the team quarantine requirement when positive cases were confirmed.

“We owed it to the participating teams to do our best to create the conditions necessary for this event to work. Unfortunately, this was not enough. We now have to take some time and focus on getting all players and team staff back home safely.”

The IIHF had previously taken some flack for cancelling a Womens junior tournament before a game was even played while also doing everything they could to guarantee the Men’s tournament would be played.

Covid, it appears, had other plans.

was that when it got bought out by Lyle, after the folks from the Italian Job successfully stole all the gold back from Steve? He always claimed Napster had been stolen from him by his college roommate. Of course, I think that movie was 2002, so the company took a dirt napster shortly thereafter.
