I noticed that Ghislaine Maxwell just turned 60 (born on Christmas Day, blecch) so there’s a chance she just may live long enough to outstay her welcome as a guest of the State of New York.
Maybe.

Would Jeffrey Epstein really have been “facing life in prison”? Given his wealth, and his connections (toxic as he would have been to most of them), and that a trial would have almost certainly become a media circus - ripe for grounds for years worth of appeals??

Maybe he did off himself, but the circumstances are just too suspicious to be face-value: though as pointed out earlier, he’s still dead. Either way. No tears need be shed….

I’m not either, but given what Epstein knew and the fact there were some odd things that happened at the jail (for example, the guards disappearing and leaving him alone for an extended period of time when they shouldn’t have [and then lying about it] and the mysterious “accidental” deletion of video from his first suicide attempt) really make me wonder.

I don’t pretend to have ANY idea what actually happened but I would not be shocked to learn it was not, in fact, a suicide.

There are a *LOT* of employees waking up around the country and realizing that they do, actually, have worth. Because they are the people who actually do the work.

The manager here sounds like a true nightmare. Using every guilt-trip tactic in the book to try to pressure the employee to come back to work so they can continue to abuse & exploit him.

Like all bullies, when you refuse to play their game, they start to whine and cry.

This should be the new American Dream: To be considered so essential to a company that they’d fall apart if you quit tomorrow.

Good that the jury came through and found her guilty on what should be life in prison.

If she were smart, she’d try to cut a deal with prosecutors on sentencing. Prosecutors can and should make that deal. She was a facilitator in child sex rapes, but the actual perpetrators are still at large.

Expect a recommendation for a favorable sentencing after all the testimony is given, that is. Let her name the names and let those fuckers rot in hell. I don’t care who gets named - or what political affiliations they have. If they raped children, they deserve to spend the rest of their days in prison.

That she hadn’t made a deal before today tells me that she genuinely believed that either her money or her connections would stop her from going to jail. Now that it’s a certainty that she’s gonna do time, the only deal to be made is whether it’s gonna be dying in a max pen or doing a few years in Club Fed.

Well, if the conspiracy theories about Epstein’s death are to be believed, if Maxwell spilled her guts to cut a deal, she’d know that she was a dead woman walking and that the feds likely couldn’t protect her (or anyone she cared about), in or out of stir.

Not saying that’s the case, but it makes for some captivating crime drama.

And, yeah, there doesn’t seem to be cuts to that footage, the ship’s violent end was that quick:

At about 0815 hours, the first kamikaze appeared on the American ships’ radar, and orders were given for the convoy to begin evasive manoeuvring.[17] Through holes in the clouds, the Japanese pilots sighted the American force as it steamed south of Cebu and Bohol Islands. The Japanese aircraft were three A6M Zero fighters of the 201st Air Group, which had taken off from Cebu at 0950 were led by Lt. Masami Hoshino (星野政己) and each carried a 250 kg bomb.[18] Diving through anti-aircraft fire and despite damage to his aircraft, the Japanese pilot crashed between Burke’s #2 and #3 cargo holds.[14]

A brief flash of fire was visible and for several seconds, only smoke could be seen billowing from her hold. A few seconds later, a huge pillar of fire shot out of Burke’s cargo hold, followed by an immense cloud of white smoke[17] before an enormous blast wave and fireball erupted as her cargo of munitions detonated, instantly destroying the ship and killing her crew of 40 merchant marine sailors and 28[19] or 29[20] armed guards. For several seconds, Burke was not visible under a mushroom cloud of smoke, fire and explosions. Several ships nearby were damaged by the force of the blast and flying fragments.[17] The shock wave rocked the entire convoy with ships reporting that they had been torpedoed. A US Army “FS” type ship just aft of Burke was severely damaged by the blast, sinking before it could be identified.[3] As the cloud of smoke cleared, nearby ships closed on Burke’s former position to search for survivors but Burke, and all aboard her were lost.

Remember kiddies, any “currency” that potentially has an upper limit to the amount and value of it leaves no room for economic growth and guarantees a either *really* bad time, or increasing the portion of it that is fiat.

A basic college economics class makes this blaringly obvious if it’s not taught by a maniac they can’t get rid of because of tenure.

The reason the gold standard is asinine bullshit in the 21st century is only one of the reasons cryptocurrency is also.

Cryptocurrency is better than fiat money because the early adopters get all the value. There was a previous discussion on Bitcoin specifically, where each individual bitcoin is harder to mine than the last, in order to ensure that the supply of bitcoin is finite. However, that means that the early miners have thousands of bitcoin that are worth whatever they say they are, whereas new players have to spend thousands and thousands of real dollars for just one bitcoin. That’s a feature for those who are sleazy enough to be at the top of the pyramid… makes you wonder what Josh Mandel’s financial past may entail.

Nothing in the world has “intrinsic value” of any sort, it’s all fiat. It just depends on who or what is deciding that fiat.

re: #164 Patricia Kayden

For the longest time my friends and I had a tradition. There was an English pub in town that celebrates the New Year when it’s midnight in London, so 4PM in California. We’d show up at Noon, drink, eat, etc. and then after 4, we would hangout for a while to make sure everyone was sober and good before leaving, and then go on to anything else we might want to do. Often that option was “I’m good, I’m just going to go home and avoid all the crazy.”

So even in my 20’s most of the time I was looking like that “now” picture by midnight because I had done it all much earlier and relatively safer. I lost that option when the place started selling tickets because the crowd size was getting to be too much, and I missed them before they sold out. Every year since then something has caused me to not go, most recent of which is COVID. I don’t even know if the place has survived the pandemic or not.

There are so many rich and powerful men who had reasons to make Epstein go away. Let’s not forget that Attorney General Barr’s father was the headmaster of an elite New York City school that hired college dropout Epstein to teach math and physics and start him on his career. Epstein died in the custody of those working for the Barr DOJ. Let’s also remember the plea deal that Epstein got under Alex Acosta years earlier, where he received a suspiciously light sentence.

Ghisliane’s conviction will do little to stop this scourge of child rape and trafficking if the men who participated escape without receiving justice for their crimes.

And let’s not forget Les Wexner, who really got Epstein’s financial ball rolling (and who knows what other balls.)

During his time as Wexner’s financial guru, Epstein’s holdings grew tremendously—sometimes by acquiring properties formerly owned by Wexner such as the town house on East 71st Street, one of the largest private homes in Manhattan. While it has been reported over the years that the home was transferred to him in a $1 transaction—-and Epstein may have led people to believe that—documents show he paid Wexner $20 million for it. In Columbus, Epstein owned a 10,000-square-foot house next to Wexner and, according to Merritt, paid a below-market price for one of The Limited’s private jets. (Epstein also reportedly oversaw construction of Wexner’s superyacht, Limitless.) Merritt recalled once asking Wexner why Epstein was so well compensated. “Les just said, ‘Because I got more money than I can ever spend,’ ” said Merritt. “Les gave him free rein over his checkbook.” In 2019, the Wall Street Journal reported Epstein earned $200 million from Wexner. Merritt puts the number at $400 million.

This is interesting - the Israelis might be pondering a “let ‘er rip” strategy in regard to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. It’s in Czech, so here’s the English translation behind a spoiler tag:

In Israel, which has so far relied on high immunization in the fight against the spread of covid-19, senior health ministry officials are considering a change of approach to achieve collective immunity by infecting the masses. The reason is the growing number of new cases related to the onset of the wave caused by the omicron variant, said channel 12. Isolation measures have been relaxed in the country since Thursday.

The vaccinated and those who have undergone covid-19 will not need to be quarantined after contact with the infected person if they have a negative antigen test. So far, a PCR test has been required.

On Wednesday, there were 3,446 infected in the nine-million-strong country, on Tuesday there were 2,967. These are the highest values in the last quarter of the year. The number of infected will continue to rise as the reproductive number R, which reflects how many people can be infected, has risen from 1.47 to 1.53.

For the first time, community transmission was also detected in the omicron variant, previously it was detected in people who came to the country from abroad.

The Czech Republic is still dominated by the delta. Omicron confirmed in 57 cases

The growing number of people infected has not yet affected the number of hospitalized and serious people, of whom there are 88, of which 39 on pulmonary ventilation and 18 on ECMO.

It is the low number of serious cases that has led to the consideration of moving to a “mass contagion model”. This was stated by Channel 12 on Tuesday evening, referring to senior officials of the Ministry of Health.

However, non-appointed ministerial officials said, according to Channel 12, that “no other model is possible” due to slower vaccination of children and the reluctance of society to take lockdowns or other harsh anti-coronavirus measures.

Omikron behaves a little differently. The ministry is preparing to reduce quarantine and isolation. Professor Cyrille Cohen, who runs the immunology laboratory at Bar-Ilan University, sees this as a good approach. “I find that only through natural exposure to vaccine protection does the virus become endemic (that is, circulating but not causing epidemic waves) ,” he told the Jerusalem Post.

The reason for such a procedure may be the high infectivity of the new variant. “Because omicron is so contagious, our efforts to stop it are in vain,” said Professor Hagai Levine, who heads the Israeli Association of Doctors in the Public Health Service. “What we can and should try is to protect the most vulnerable as much as possible,” he added.

The change in procedure is not only related to the fact that the omicron variant has a lower proportion of serious cases. A non-peer-reviewed study published on MedRxiv showed that people who experience this variant are protected from infection with the delta variant. Levine added that if the results of the study are confirmed, “Omicron may mark a transition to endemic status.”

TSA forced millions to take off their shoes to check for bombs for years.

They can check a card to see if you’re vaccinated against a biological agent that can kill or permanently injure those around them. The airlines are sending mixed signals about this - they worry about profits, but their employees are dealing with the antivaxxer/antimask extremists who assault staff on a frequent basis. These antivaxxers and antimaskers are endangering everyone around them.

Impose the mandate and make the GOP defend the indefensible. Don’t quit before you give it a chance. Majority of Americans would approve of vaccinations to fly if it means returning to normal more quickly.

re: #250 Belafon

Of course, there’s a major downside risk involved. But even here, the Czech government has started discussions about “acceptable losses” (albeit, quietly). Locally, there’s two other factors I’m considering: First, there’s a good chance that the Czech Constitutional Court might well find the current funding of the healthcare system here is unconstitutional, which means the newly-installed government would be left to (rather frantically) come up with funding for it from scratch. Second, the Constitutional Court is expected to rule in the not-too-distant future that anti-COVID measures are unconstitutional, which they have done multiple times in the past; the old government just ignored the Court’s rulings.

Given those two factors, the Czech government would simply have little other choice other than pursue a “let it rip” strategy. The ruling on health care funding is expected in the next three or four weeks, BTW.

Epidemiologically, I don’t think it’s entirely wrong to do minimal mitigation of spread if a population is highly vaccinated. In a vaccinated individual, evidence seems to suggest that Omicron and even Delta are not much more virulent than a flu. We don’t do a lot of spread mitigation for a flu, and so allowing Covid to transition to a more mild endemic form with vaccination protection is not unreasonable.

To do this you’d have to have a significantly vaccinated population though, which America will basically never have.

The whole “National Divorce” bit is humorous largely because it’s just the usual “Texas could totally leave the union tomorrow!” talk with the serial numbers filed off. And so the same arguments apply, namely that red states that “divorced” themselves from the Union would pretty quickly become third-world banana republics as they lost access to both domestic as well as global markets, while liberals and even “moderates” fled the state to escape persecution for failure to convert.

Heh, obviously MTG has not talked to businesses, because I can’t imagine that even the big Georgia businesses (Coke & AT&T) would be thrilled about a “National Divorce” aka “Civil War 2.0”.

I’m still off work until Tuesday - and even that will be a half day, as I need to take my friend back to the airport in the afternoon. I just got wrapped up switching over my auto insurance, as after the home insurance debacle earlier this year, I wasn’t going to stay with that provider any longer.

Threw a bag of beans and a ham hock in the crock pot before bed last night. Need to get some ground beef and onion and finish it today - chili on the march.

Also just messaged my employees and told them to make it a four day weekend. First sunny day in almost two weeks here.

Can I work for you, please?

I’ve been saying this for quite a while. The Repug fascist leaders do not care how many toxic incels and posturing yokels are killed or imprisoned on their behalf. It will also be very difficult to get the endangered pawns themselves to care, since the leadership will easily convince them to reject all reports of roundup, defeat and massacre as “fake news.” We already see this in the response, or lack of response, to mass Covid deaths among the antivaxx rank and file.
I generally believe that the “head of the snake” analogy is over-rated, but the leadership and its acolytes must also be targeted in this case, because of their uniquely powerful command of dis-information. How, and when, depends on the circumstances as the conflict unfolds in the future.

I’d say that DeSantis is a true sociopath. He’s advocated for doing nothing to stop spread of covid, despite his wife having breast cancer. His wife is in the highest risk groups, but he insists not to do anything to slow spread - slowing spread that would protect people like his wife.

He’s probably got covid. His wife might have it. And they’re just trying to cover it up. Because of course they are.

See, having that bagel with cream cheese automatically made you Jewish. Just like enjoying a döner kebab automatically makes you a Muslim.

Or like having meatloaf and this:

automatically makes you a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.
