The (almost biennial) Pew survey, which they published some time ago, still generating headlines:

I’ve posted on the Pew (and Gallup) surveys before over the years.

What the Pew survey tells us is that “atheists” are not growing in share of the US population. “Agnostics” are growing, but the big growth is in “nothing in particular”.

It’s that last category that is telling us something more about American society, more than about religion.

One seeming contradiction between Pew and Gallup is that the latter discovered that the share of “evangelical” (fundamentalists) have not decreased, while Pew is saying there is a big drop-off in those saying they are “Christian”.

Something has happened: fundamentalism has not only not waned but increased a bit under Trump. Trump, who as Charles rightly described as an incurious clod, is very good at being a con-man.

In that role he has been able to move American Christian fundamentalism more towards political extremism. “Christian” is now a political label for reactionary right-wing beliefs.

That’s to the dismay of the more cautious once-called-“mainline” Christian organizations, who are losing numbers.

Also - even with all the Spanish speaking immigrants it turns out that Catholicism is not growing in share of the US population. Turns out the young’uns from those Spanish speaking immigrants are not so keen to be part of the RC religion.

We humans are inherently religious (witness: invention of religions.)

But there is quite a stigma now attached to old religious organizations, and that is a brand-defeater for said organizations.

Thus the rise of the “others” or “nothing in particular”. People who don’t want to be atheists (for reasons never quite articulated in those polls) but also don’t want to be labeled by old branding.

The neighbor kids actually came over today to let us know they were having people over. They’re good kids, I just don’t see them much. Not enough to know their last names even. I mentioned fireworks don’t go over with Cleo and they promised they would not use them. So far they have kept to that, they are cooking on the grill and have music playing and I can’t hear anything from inside. Other neighbors however are not so considerate. Lots of fireworks and what sounds to be the occasional gunshot. Yay. But at least it’s not close. Cleo is under the coffee table sleeping on my husband’s feet, lol. I have a feeling it’s going to get loud here in a couple of hours.

Kuachua Brillion Xiong, 25, is now under federal indictment in Iowa, after making a 1,700-mile journey from his home outside Sacramento, Ca. to rural Cass County. The area is where an Iowa sheriff’s deputy stopped Xiong on Interstate 80 for driving aggressively and weaving out of traffic.

The suspect compiled “a list of evil individuals he intended to kill, which included but is not limited to the following politicians and public figures: Bill Clinton, Barrack Obama, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and Mark Zuckerberg.”

In an affidavit first filed under seal, prosecutors included details from Xiong’s initial encounter with Iowa law enforcement, including his belief in bizarre, deluded and discredited conspiracy theories.

“Xiong began to attempt to control the conversation and began talking about his disapproval for the government due to the sex abuse of children, some of which that has occurred by President Biden,” a local sheriff’s deputy said.

“When concluding the interview, Xiong stated that nothing would stop him from carrying out his plan of gaining access to the White House and killing the persons on his ‘hit list,’” the criminal complaint read.

“He added that if released from custody he would immediately resume traveling to the White House in Washington, D.C. and ‘do whatever it takes’ to complete his plan.”

He had money in the car to pay his funeral expenses.

a) Why would anyone want to buy a glucose meter that works on cell phone service?

I didn’t buy it, it was provided by my employer’s healthcare plan as a freebie. Livongo is just cheap when they entered into their agreement with T-Mobile by not providing for a roaming agreement.

Now I have a cellphone signal booster, which may fix this -I’ll futz with it this weekend.

re: #60 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Those don’t need a finger stick for each blood sugar test. There’s an app on your phone that will sound an alarm if blood sugar goes too high or low, and a simple click over the sensor on your arm gives you a reading in a couple seconds. It also keeps track of history for your doc. Part of the problem with diabetes care is getting people to understand how important it is to measure your blood sugar regularly throughout the day so insulin and/or other meds can be adjusted to keep things under control. Diabetes does cumulative damage, the more control you can get over it the better off your future health will end up being. You don’t need a high end phone or high powered internet for it to work. My husband’s actually works through Bluetooth.

I have the same meter. I didn’t buy it. It’s part of my health plan. I also get test strips as part of the plan. Test strips are fucking EXPENSIVE (can be well over a dollar a strip and some people need to test frequently) and coded to a particular maker’s meter.

Oh, and the meter *works* for its intended purpose, which is to test blood sugar. It just can’t upload your test data to Livongo if you’re away from cell service. I don’t recall having an issue with it when I was in Japan in 2018 and 2019. And to be perfectly honest, the fact that I didn’t have to write down my numbers made it much more likely I was going to test my blood sugar on a regular basis. I’m far more compliant after I got this meter.

Early New Year’s wishes from Mountain Time, since I don’t think I’m going to be awake at midnight. Four inches of much-needed but badly-timed snow on my back deck; 18 degrees and dropping fast. Hope this at least puts out the fires northwest of here.

“She adjusted the feathered band of her flapper headdress and held her champagne glass up high. “Seven… Six… Five… Four… Three… Two… One… Happy New Year, you guys, 2019 is over at last, dead and done with thank the Lord! Here’s to 2020 — new year, new decade, new President please heaven. It’s got to be an improvement…”

I wrote that in mid-2020 when it was becoming clear that the year was NOT going to turn out as hoped. Pleased with the President, but the decade is getting a one-star review so far. Looking at 2022 with a skeptical eye and hoping the phrase “Hold my beer” doesn’t come up yet again.

I expect that we’ll be able to read any contemporary novel from here on out and be able to tell if it was written Before or After this pandemic. It will be like a book copyrighted in 1939 — the reader approaches it with a frame of reference that includes changes the author couldn’t possibly have predicted.

Here’s to putting 2021 in the rear-view mirror, finally. See you folks next year.

Happy New Year Lizards! May this year see us all doing better and feeling more love and hope.

The immediate next door neighbors kept their promise to not use the fireworks. The rest of the neighborhood not so much. It sounds like a war zone. Cleo is still under the coffee table as close to my husband as she can get without getting up on the couch. What the actual fuck is the fascination is with fireworks I have no idea. They are pretty in moderation, but they do not have to have the boom part for that to happen. It’s obnoxious.

I clicked on one of those clickbait links, this one about some of the actresses in Harry Potter who have grown up. One them listed is Afshan Azad, who played Ron’s date to the dance in The Goblet of Fire. She tried out on a whim, and hasn’t done any acting after all the Harry Potter movies. The wild thing is what happened to her later:

Manchester Crown Court heard Ashraf Azad launched a “prolonged and nasty” attack on Afshan Azad, who played Padma Patil in the hit films.

She was punched repeatedly and dragged by her hair after being overheard talking to her Hindu boyfriend.

Mr Azad, 28, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court previously heard how Miss Azad, 22, was branded a “prostitute” and “slag” and was told: “Marry a Muslim or you die.”

The actress fled the family home in Longsight, south Manchester, through a bedroom window after the attack on 21 May 2010.

Richard Vardon QC, prosecuting, said Azad confronted his sister who ended the call, hid the phone and sim card and then sat on her bed before the defendant barged in and began shouting at her.

“He then grabbed her hair and threw her across the room,” the prosecutor said.

Mr Vardon said the actress was pushed on to her father’s bed, with her brother shouting: “Sort your daughter out! She’s a slag!”

Azad then grabbed his sister by the neck and began to throttle her, the court heard.

The victim’s mother and sister-in-law then entered the bedroom as the family discussed what to do with her, the court was told.

Mr Vardon said her father, Abul, 53, suggested sending her back to Bangladesh for an arranged marriage, while her mother called her a “prostitute”.

Miss Azad’s father sent her to bed, but she fled the house the next day.

She’s married now, and has a kid. I don’t think the husband is who she was assaulted over, since they had a Muslim marriage, but there’s no information about that.

Looks like the annual Mendenhall Valley war is starting to heat up. So far, just a few small skirmishes with small caliber ammunition. A few rounds of larger artilitary can also be heard. Probably range calculation shots.

I thought the war might be cancelled due to weather, but I guess not. Currently it’s snowing hard with the temps in the high 20’s. Hard to keep your powder dry.

For the past two weeks we’ve had a day or two of 4-8 inches of snow followed by clear days and nights with the temps going down to the single digits. Then, wash and repeat.
The result is about 24” of snow on the ground with more coming this weekend.

One of the stupider things that Republicans are spending $50,000,000 on to prosecute, now held over for a second year of harassment.

Missouri Gov Mike Parson Vows Reporter Who Found Sh*tty Coding In State Website Will PAY (Wonkette)

In case you forgot about this little bit of dipshittery, a new Website with a database of all Missouri school employees was started.

A reporter for the St. Louis Post Dispatch found that by right-clicking on the Website, you could see the source code of the page, which included all thee employees’ Social Security Numbers.

That reporter informed the state Department of Education so they could fix their Website and withheld his article from publication until the fix was completed.

Enter Gov. Mike Parson (R-idiot). He insists this is computer hacking and wants the reporter jailed and the newspaper fined. The FBI was called in, which says “no that is not hacking” and Parsons insists “yes it is.” The Missouri State Police were then called in to investigate since the FBI wouldn’t engage in a Republican witch hunt of a newspaper reporter.

That investigation is now complete and has been turned over to prosecutors to put the reporter on trial for hacking a state computer system and obtaining personal information through unauthorised access of a computer system.

New Cars Will Nickel-and-Dime You - It’s Automotive As A Service (Hackaday, December 30, 2021)

Every few years, someone pushing a startup to investors comes up with an acronym or buzzword which rapidly becomes the new hotness in those circles. One of the most pernicious is “as a Service,” which takes regular things and finds a way to charge you a regular fee to use them.

Automotive companies just absolutely loved the sound of this, and the industry is rapidly moving to implement subscription services across the board. Even if there’s hardware in your car for a given feature, you might find you now need to pay a monthly fee to use it. Let’s explore how this came about, and talk about which cars are affected. You might be surprised to find yours already on the list.

As has been pointed out about Pew’s survey questions on this subject before, there are a few problems.

The question of “are atheists growing in number” cannot be properly answered in the United States, because of the fear of openly admitting you are an atheist. Open admission leads to the destruction of families, throwing minor children on the street, harassment, and outright murder.

The question also misses the definitions of those terms.

Atheist: I do not believe any assertions of gods.
Agnostic: I do not know if gods exist or not.

A person who calls themselves an agnostic avoids the first problem (fear of violence), but is in effect an atheist. That person does not pray, does not worship, does not attend church.

The overwhelming majority of atheists describe themselves as “agnostic atheists” (they do not know if a god exists or not, and do not believe assertions that gods do exist). Those are actually two separate questions (knowledge and belief).

A video has surfaced on social media in which a fully masked man with a crossbow, identifying himself as an Indian Sikh, is seen declaring to “assassinate” Queen Elizabeth II to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, prompting Scotland Yard to launch a probe, days after an intruder armed with a crossbow was arrested at the monarch’s Windsor Castle.

The video, shared on Snapchat, is that of a fully masked man who identifies himself as Indian Sikh Jaswant Singh Chail and declares that he wants to “assassinate” the monarch in revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre, according to The Sun newspaper which obtained the video.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old intruder, who has not yet been named by the Metropolitan Police, is now being held over mental health issues.

Scotland Yard officers were investigating the video reportedly linked to the intruder armed with a crossbow arrested at Windsor Castle on Christmas Day.

Czechs like to pride themselves that they’re one of the most atheistic countries in Europe - indeed, the world. However, the reality is more complex. I’d say most Czechs are agnostics and broadly speaking, they have little patience with organized religion. That being said, they’re also big believers in all manner of woowoo and there’s strong general interest in Eastern religions/philosophies, which can lead to humorous paradoxes, such as that even though many Czechs could be described as Islamophobic (to greater or lesser degrees), they’re also fascinated by some of the more esoteric branches of Islam such as Sufism or the Isma’ilis or the Alevis…which perhaps shouldn’t be so surprising as Czechs are into mysticism on an individual spiritual level.

There has been a spate of violence in the past couple weeks perpetrated by Sikhs.

In another incident a few days ago, a man was beaten to death for attempting to steal a Sikh holy sword. I suppose that would be roughly the equivalent of trying to steal a cross from a church and being beaten to death for it.

Sikhs in North America are generally not violent because they are a small minority religion. In areas where Sikhs are the majority, they are sometimes quite violent.

Preliminary evidence for an aversion to atheists in long-term mating domains in the Southern United States (Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, full study paper, October 13, 2021)

The abstract notes in their study of the most religious area of the USA (the Southeast), atheists are perceived as the least desirable for long-term relationships. That perception is ascribed to the widespread religious belief that atheists are untrustworthy in relationships.

Abstract

The centrality of religiosity in selecting long-term mates suggests atheism could be undesirable for that context. Given recent findings suggesting several positive stereotypes about atheists, a largely distrusted group, individuals could prefer atheists in mating domains not emphasizing long-term commitment (i.e., short-term mating). Two studies tasked U.S. participants with evaluating long-term and short-term mating desirability of theists and atheists while assessing perceptions of their personalities. Study 1 indicated atheists were more desirable in short-term mating than long-term mating, though this preference did not translate to being preferred over theists. The pre-registered Study 2 demonstrated this effect is specific to physically attractive targets. Atheists were further perceived as more prone to infidelity, especially when attractive. Results are framed from an evolutionary perspective while discussing anti-atheist prejudice.

That goes against statistics showing atheists are amongst the lowest divorce percentage of “religious” groups.

My wife and I received our mail ballots yesterday for our school district’s special election to recall two school board members.

The members (both R though elections are officially non-partisan) are alleged to have been involved in a scheme to divert school district money.

If the recall of either member is successful, the remaining board will appoint people from the school district to fill their remaining terms.

My town of 128 is divided between two school districts. That happened in 2005 when our town disestablished its school system and people were asked at that time which district they wanted to belong to for tax and attendance purposes; the previous owners of our house chose Leyton Public School, in Dalton in the next county south of us.

The school district map of my town looks like a checkerboard between Leyton and Bridgeport (our county seat).

The instructions on the ballots say we can mail them back, or we can return them to the Morrill County or Cheyenne County elections offices.

It’s time to wish everyone a happy new year, except that global New Year’s is a product of western military and economic colonialism. As usual the popes were involved, subtly inducing everyone to recognize the circumcision of Christ. (The Jews were probably involved, too.)

Popes were involved. Discordian popes.

Fiscal Year (Goes to the Cyclopedia of Congressional Budget Law)

The federal Fiscal Year has been changed several times throughout the country’s history.

The latest change (moving it from July 1 to October 1) was part of the Congressional Budget Act of 1974, to take effect in 1977.

A second bill enabling the change was passed in 1976, the Fiscal Year Transition Act, Public Law 94-274 (Goes to the US House of Representatives)

That goes against statistics showing atheists are amongst the lowest divorce percentage of “religious” groups.

Divorce rates are a tricky metric, because they do not account for cohabitation. Religious people would tend not to “live in sin”.

Atheism has long been associated with Communism and amorality and those prejudices are hard to get rid of.

Germany cancelled public fireworks again this year.

It was still allowed to set off fireworks from private property, but all we heard in our village were a few rockets popping and not the usual War Zone for the first hour (punctuated by ambulance and fire department sirens) followed by another 2-3 hours of sporadic whizz-banging.

Some very religious people have lived in sin in the past because of crushing divorce laws which made it well-nigh impossible to legally end a previous marriage. This is much less the case now. Oh, and then there were my parents, who weren’t legally married until I was nearly 13 years old, because their California marriage license was never filed (the pastor died the next week). Their marriage only became legal upon moving to Texas and holding out as husband and wife in 1973, thus they were common-law married. But don’t you dare tell my mother she wasn’t legally married in 1959, she might smack you.

My grandmother divorced (and remarried) in the 1920’s, which the Catholic Church did not recognize. She was excommunicated for living in sin in the eyes of the Church.

I just assumed she never came to church because she was too busy making us Sunday dinner…

I read an account a couple of weeks back (in the NYTimes) about how the writer’s parents had a “Josephite” marriage. His parents had married outside the Catholic church and his father had been married and divorced. So they were living in (mortal) sin. Dad decided to join the Catholic church, it was all very secretive, but as part of the deal, his parents had to sleep in separate beds. And this was a big deal, out with the double, in with the twin beds. When the first wife died, the parents had an essentially secret second marriage in the Catholic church, and then it was out with the twin beds and in with the double.

To me, this is just crazy. First of all, the whole notion of a “Josephite marriage” reflects the notion that Mary had to remain ever virgin, so not even her legal husband could have sex with her because (to be very rude about it) “God got there first.” This is NOT a healthy view of marital life, not in the least.

Second, if a church told me that my marriage was invalid because I didn’t jump through their hoops (and back in the 1950s and 1960s, it was years of jumping through hoops to get recognition of a prior marriage being invalid), I’d be like, UHM FUCK THAT NOISE. I recall the story of the woman at the well in the gospel of John. Jesus noted that she’d had several husbands and the guy she was currently with, she wasn’t married to him. But after saying that, he didn’t beat her down about her marital status but instead went on about true worship. I mean, I KNOW this is a set piece by the writer of John, but think about it this way—apparently what was important to the gospel writer’s community was that Jesus talked to a triply outcast person: woman, divorced/not married, Samaritan, and he imparted to her some important stuff the writer thought needed to be set down on papyrus. And Jesus didn’t care about her marital status. If the writer of John was trying to clean up Jesus’ image for consumption by the elites, do you think he would have included talking to a divorced Samaritan woman? Something else was going on here. The story was too important in their minds to leave out these discomfiting details.

(I’m not passing on the actual veracity of the story, but that the writers weren’t theologians and they may have been presenting an idealized picture of Jesus and his encounters with everyday, problematic people. ETA: Too bad the “church” has a completely shitty attitude towards problematic people.)

Sorry for the heavy Biblical stuff, I just get annoyed with religious rules that don’t reflect reality.

I know a couple who got married at 20, separated several years later and now have each been living with different partners for almost a decade but are STILL legally married to each other because they can’t afford the divorce proceedings.

I’ve warned them that could cause issues (especially if one them gets incapacitated or dies), but they still have no sense of urgency about then situation.

We had a friend with a wife and two sons. He and his wife divorced, but he couldn’t make her move out because he was too nice and thought it would be bad for his (nearly adult) sons. Mr. w told him if they live together for 7 years after the divorce, they’d be common-law remarried. It had been 6 years. She was out in a month.

Around here we went to bed, only to awaken to the sound of nearby explosions in the air. Many mortar-style fireworks lit up the sky. Windows rattled. Had to be dozens. Illegal and dangerous. Scared the crap out of all four cats. I will be in touch with local PD to see if they caught anyone. Curmudgeonly? Maybe.

Some people on Mr. C’s side of the family do that. Personally, I’m done with the holidays by New Years and am happy to take it down then.

Understandable. For us it is from a time when we were younger and couldn’t always get together with friends during the Christmas Eve through New Years day time period. So, let’s carry on the merry making Tudor style and go through 12th Night! Feasting! Presents! More Feasting!

What threw me for a loop is nowadays, when they ‘disconnect’ you they keep an active internet connection. So it sorta works just throttled way down. I guess so any hardware installed can still communicate with the admin side of things. So I’m on the internet and thought shit was slow last night because everybody was home watching Netflix. LGF worked.

And throughout the Bay Area. Everyone wanted to test for/after the holidays. Lots of schools and day cares are requiring negative tests to return.

Meanwhile, I’d better get on with my day.

Annnnd… 2022 starts out with the Denver airport light rail canceled today because they couldn’t scrounge enough personnel to have the federally-required second crew member on the train. So I get to drive 30+ miles to the airport after all, on snow-packed and icy roads, to fetch my sister who got up at 3:30 a.m. Boston time and is braving weather and omicron to get here. The single-digit temps are just the cherry on the poop sundae.

First real snow of the season. Everyone’s forgotten how to drive on it.

Whee?

Reading through the replies, and there are still people who think that the vaccines haven’t made it through phase three trials, and are still only emergency use authorization.
