Lyrics:

I’m sitting here on the phone
Just listening to the dial tone
And if I dial I hope I find nobody home
I’ve been in pain unceasing and I tried to deep-breathe
The shape and texture makes a bottomless seethe
I can’t take the murk, so whatever works
I’ll take what you’ve got, to tame a beast I serve
I’m been loving, been loving, you
With a little help, from, the meds
With a little help from some, sympathetic souls
Embraced in a tender loving hold and it’s got me on this road
I’ve been straight-ahead, out the bed
Straight up and down off the ground
With a little help from some, sympathetic souls
Embraced with a loving tender hold
I’d rather feel nothing than this
Wanted to stop feeling
Oh we’ve all had that wish
At the edges, at the margins
This feeling starts creeping in
Gets worse and worse, more and more
But my dull eyes have brightened,
oh they’re brighter

Grating electronic voices screeching “EXTERMINATE!” are coming to the New Eden star cluster come January 13, when one of the longest-running science fiction MMOs meets the world’s longest-running science fiction television show. EVE Online’s “Interstellar Convergence” event will give clone pilots a chance to be horribly murdered by Daleks over and over again. Lucky them.

Never minding the fact that, AFAICR, at least two Republican-led statehouses (AZ and MI) have introduced legislation to basically allow exactly that.

Only a few, at least in D.C. ; most are not insane, just evil. I am torn about Navarro; I think he understands that he is lying about the election and is a malevolent weasel, but then wonder if he is just a well-educated gullible Lindell. He certainly was correct to raise the alarm at the outset of the pandemic, but he has repeatedly demonstrated an adulation for Trump, that suggests he is a true believer.

McConnell is fine with a white supremacist-run autocracy; he has no concern about discarding votes of people of color. His opposition to the Hawley and Cruz efforts were based on his knowledge that Pence’s refusal to play Trump’s game and Pelosi’s control of the House meant that decertification would fail and he believed that the attempt would cause problems for the GOP. If the GOP controlled the House, he would likely have been totally supportive of this coup. His objection to the Navarro plan was that it would fail; if he thought it could succeed, he would have supported it.

They even take tithes from the poor and weak to support the rich and those who rule. They claim this mother of ours, the earth, for their own use, and fence their neighbor away. … If America had been twice the size it is, there still would not have been enough.”

When will this tulipmania heir finally come to its deserved end? Wait — that’s unfair. Tulips are a legitimate product that many appreciate; they just got a “little” overpriced, but existed before the mania and continued to exist well after the mania came crashing down. As PT Barnum said, “There’s a sucker born every minute”.

Sure Cryptocurrency is invaluable in financing criminal operations, assisting with money laundering, and the avoidance of taxes; perhaps that will be sufficient to allow it to continue to exist — but probably not.

But a lot of Tulipmania was also “the art of the deal”: in fact, closing tulip-trading deals became a sort of public performance art in which complex, convoluted deals were struck in taverns before an enthralled audience.

And right now the thing powering a lot of the NFT trade is the Internet publicity they engender

I got a Bluetooth speaker for my bike so I now have tunes. I’ve found it very relaxing and I ride at a much slower speed now. It’s also nice for warning hikers I’m coming up behind with a calming Neil Young or Cat Stevens song. I try to avoid Black Sabbath and Slade near others. I had a lovely 21 mile ride today and the weather was a balmy 64 in Walnut Creek. I remember at the end of summer that seemed like a miserable temperature, now I live in heavy weight REI thermals so it’s probably still miserable at 64 without them.

Yesterday I replaced my tire tubes and added a sealant, in the process I found my rims are taped and ready for tubeless tires so next flat I switch to tubeless tires. When my bike was built they couldn’t get the tubeless tires for 24” rims so they just stuck tube tires on.

I figure I have maybe 10 more years left to live so I’m going to live them like a teenager. Fun and Adventure as long as I can.

and now for something completely different!

A Chinese woman dropped almost $16,000 on drones to celebrate her dog’s birthday with an elaborate aerial display — but authorities have a bone to pick with her for the stunt.

The woman, who has not been identified, rented 520 of the flying machines to form the message “Happy 10th birthday to Doudou” in the sky over the Xiangjiang River in Changsha, the South China Morning Post reported.

The drones then flew in formations that formed patterns of a birthday cake as the pet lover and her friends serenaded Doudou with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

The woman apparently chose the number 520 on purpose because its Mandarin pronunciation sounds similar to the phrase, “I love you,” according to the news outlet.

The world is getting dumber by the day, all because of smart phones.

Shoving garlic cloves up your nose is snot a good idea.

One of the new year’s most hazardous trends isn’t just odious — it reeks of pseudoscience, experts said.

The harebrained hack has unofficial healers corking up their nostrils with raw garlic cloves for approximately 10 to 15 minutes in attempt to unclog a stuffy snout.

After the user removes the garlic, a flash flood of mucus gushes from their noses, prompting the semblance and sensation of actual decongestion. But what’s really happening is far from therapeutic, Erich Voigt, associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at NYU Langone Health, told The Post.

“It’s terrible,” the ear, nose and throat expert said.

“The body wants to immediately expel the garlic and its chemicals, so it’s creating an overflow of mucus to flush out that irritant,” he continued, noting that the new crop of mucus is adding to the collection of clotted phlegm that originally caused the nasal congestion.

“And because the nose is plugged up, the mucus can’t circulate like it would if you were breathing in and out, it’s just accumulating,” he said.

In other words, that deluge of snot TikTokers observed is merely a product of their own doing. “It’s not the mucus that was trapped in there due to the disease or virus, it’s the production of mucus meant to get the garlic out,” Voigt said.

About that…

It’s also a good reminder that the BLS revisions have increased job gains under Biden, and that the worst month of job growth under Biden is still better than ~75% of job numbers under Trump.

Remember when the BLS indicated paltry job growth in December, and right wingers claimed this was proof Biden’s economic plans were a disaster.

About that…

[Embedded content]

It’s also a good reminder that the BLS revisions have increased job gains under Biden, and that the worst month of job growth under Biden is still better than ~75% of job numbers under Trump.

Now the counter-spin is that Bidenflation is eating up any gains made in jobs and wages.

theguardian.com

Very scary article.

Scary because I believe every word of it.

Yeah. I had a discussion about this very thing with a friend of mine who had shared an article written by a person who lived in Sri Lanka during the last part of the civil war. The institutions of government were falling apart and people were still going dancing. (That’s really not the gist of the article, but only a 1 sentence impression.) Then I moved on to MTG’s idea of a “National Divorce” and said, but “what about banks, large corporations, etc? I can’t see Coca-Cola liking a civil war, or my evil too big to fail employer.”

I’m not sure I see a civil war in the future, but I actually could see a low grade civil conflict raging on for years, a battle here, a battle there, etc. These are awful thoughts to have on the 364th day since the insurrection. But we must think them.

It’s lower risk if you’re fully vaxxed and boosted.
It’s higher risk if you’re vaccinated.
You’re at highest risk if you’re not vaccinated and don’t mask.

Mild cases are those that can produce prolonged symptoms, like loss of smell/taste, shortness of breath, heart issues, etc. Even a mild covid case can be far worse than any flu.

And even those cases are clogging up ERs, urgent cares, and PCPs. Only way to get past all this is everyone vaccinating and masking and the same people who refuse to vaccinate are those who openly fight mandates. They’re the ones hardest hit by covid, and will see the highest per capita hospitalizations, ICU, and death rates.

While it looks so far like congressional redistricting is not reducing the number of safe democratic districts, what is happening is that the number of competitive districts is being reduced. For example, in Kentucky the GOP is not attempting to crack the 3rd congressional district currently represented by John Yarmuth, so it will remain Democratic leaning, and Yarmuth’s successor is likely to be a Democrat. What they did do, however, is remove the state Capitol, Frankfort, in Franklin County, which leans Democratic, from the 6th Congressional District to make the 6th much less competitive, and moved it into the heavily Republican First Congressional District. You can see on this map that the 1st, which begins in the far West next to the Mississippi River, has a long tail snaking between several other districts up to Franklin County, the epitome of a Gerrymander.

Just typical gerrymandering. In 2018 Andy Barr beat Amy McGrath by only about 3 points in the 6th District Congressional race, so by moving a bunch of Democratic voters out of his district, he is guaranteed a seat in Congress for as long as he wants it. I don’t like it, and I can complain to my elected representatives about it, but the GOP has a supermajority in the Kentucky General Assembly and SCOTUS gave its blessing to partisan gerrymandering, so they will draw the districts any way they want. Governor Beshear can veto the gerrymander, and he should, but the GOP will easily override his veto.

It doesn’t take long to go from hero to goat these days, even in the middle of a personnel shortage in the health-care industry and a spike in transmissions among vaccinated people.

So long, heroes: Mayo Clinic fires 700 workers over vaccination mandate

Unvaccinated carriers infecting other (vaccinated) workers also contribute to a personnel shortage.

Again, if you want to remain unvaccinated, then I guess that is your personal choice, but be prepared to face the consequences of your free and sovereign choices. Go find a job that does not require regular close contact with other people.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles MacKay
I read this when I was quite young. I couldn’t have imagined at the time that doing so would eventually be a critical factor in my financial success. I’ve had the experience several times of watching associates, competitors, and all-knowing investment gurus predictably lose their shirts on some kind of bubble that should have been obvious. It is like watching a trainwreck in slow motion.
The dot com bubble of the late 90s was probably the most extreme example. I advised one soon-to-be-broke enthusiast to read MacKay, with special attention to Tulipmania. He scoffed. “What the hell would a 150 year old book have to do with what is going on now?” Turns out its importance could be measured in the billions of dollars. People who saw the bubble early kept their money, those who didn’t saw theirs disappear down a rathole.
It’s occurred to me that the gun buying craze, now in its 12th year, is at least in part a kind of bubble, since some (though not all) of the driving force is the expectation that the product involved will soon be banned.
Why hasn’t this bubble burst? It appears that a cabal of scam artists, allied to fascist politicians, have created an almost burst proof bubble. The gullibility of their audience, and the dark skill of their propagandists,, allow them to constantly move the finish line, maintaining the fear of an imminent ban year and year out. Racist demogogery and fearmongering are part of it, to be sure, but the speculative expectation of a ban is the factor that explains the gun nut tendency to buy 20 or 30 or 50 guns when one or two would meet any foreseeable need.

It also takes a county of 50,000 people that is about 11% black (a few percentage points higher than the state overall) away from a competitive district.

I’ve actually heard ammosexuals say that their stash of AR-15 would be “worth a fortune” when Obama/Hillary/Beto/Biden finally get around to banning them.
Also noteworthy: There seems to be a big overlap between this group and the crypto-marks in this country.

It’s a class-action lawsuit asking for $6 billion (yes, billion with a B) in damages because they claim it’s deceptive that the teams are called the “New York” Giants and “New York” Jets when they play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In fact, the other part of the relief, besides the tidy sum of cash, is that they’re demanding that the judge enjoin the teams to play in New York State.

For playing in North Jersey, despite the fact they’re the NY Giants and NY Jets.

I read through the tweet thread. I honestly think the person filing the lawsuit is mentally ill. I also think the Lionel Hutz cosplayer who took on the case is hoping the NFL will settle out-of-court to make this go away.

I mean, among other reasons, the Jets have played at the Meadowlands for THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS. No judge is going to say, “Oh, okay, sure, 38 years later we’ll give you piles of cash because you found out yesterday that they don’t play in New York.”

Apparently this lolsuit is about how inconvenient, expensive, and environmentally damaging it is to drive or take transit from New York to New Jersey to watch the teams play, as well as the bit about false advertising - claiming, apparently, that some people bought tickets without knowing that they were going to Jersey. I cannot WAIT to see the order approving the inevitable motion to dismiss.

So shit is going down in a big way in Kazakhstan today, which seems to be a surprise to most people. The protestors have taken over a number of government buildings (and several are on fire), many of the airports, and simply grabbed riot vehicles from the cops while the cops and National Guard just sit there. The government has resigned (for what it’s worth), and it looks like a bunch of private aircraft fucked off to Western Europe before the protestors got to the airports.

The country has had the same sort of kleptocratic autocracy that a lot of Central Asian countries got stuck with, and that’s the root of this, but it’s surprising to me that the protestors want such a sharp break from Moscow. That wasn’t in the initial demands of Ukrainian or Belarusian protestors, but it ended up that way because Putin can’t tolerate any sort of democratic government in what he considers Russia’s possessions. Maybe the protestors are just getting ahead of the game.

Pretty much what I posted in early December, from my friend who is an infectious disease faculty in a department with a #29 ranking world-wide:

The State Health Officer for Alabama (even Sisyphus must feel sorry for him)

al.com

“The take-home point from what’s going on right now is that the omicron variant that is becoming the predominant variant in this country is incredibly contagious,” Harris said. “It is much more contagious than the delta variant. It is many times more contagious than anything we have seen before, many orders of magnitude more contagious than the original strain that we had almost two years ago. And it is just spreading like wildfire. It will infect everyone in this state at some point, probably, or most of them.”

It looks like the tankies have now mostly figured out where Kazakhstan is and who are the good anti-Western patriots and who are the nasty pro-Western stooges, so should be good to go soon.

This does seem to fuck things up for Putin’s little power play in Ukraine. To my view, this protest and the scale and speed of it took everyone by surprise, West and East. Russia is stretched covering the self-caused crises it had before, and now it’s got a nice big new one on its borders.

//So,

in fairness to manchin, i just read an article that indicates he is willing to put in place some filibuster reforms, and without killing the filibuster, they’d be pretty significant. they’d do away, for instance, with the ability to filibuster a bill before it’s even gotten to the floor for debate. there’s also some indication he may be open to a talking filibuster, though he needs some sense of how a talking filibuster could be brought to an end. One reform that might help, and that he sounds like he’s in favor of, is removing the supermajority requirement and going to 3/5’s of members present. So if Republicans want to filibuster all night, they’d best be willing to stay awake all night and be present on the floor.

People are fed up with politicians and politics as usual but when they see a map like that, they just shrug and accept it as politics as usual.

Then they vote - mostly out of protest - for some idiot who promises to be an outsider and to come in and clean things up.

Much of the time it may be more that they vote against the insider who has irritated them — thinking, mistakenly, that any alternative can’t be worse. In primaries, the situation is usually very different — most people don’t vote there and they believe that magically the incumbent, who they may like, will automatically get re-elected. For example, AOC won because people didn’t bother voting in primaries.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s governor planned to posthumously pardon Homer Plessy on Wednesday, more than a century after the Black man was arrested in an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow a Jim Crow law creating “whites-only” train cars.

The Plessy v Ferguson case went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ushered in a half-century of laws calling for “separate but equal” accommodations that kept Black people in segregated schools, housing, theaters and other venues.

Gov. John Bel Edwards scheduled the pardon ceremony for a spot near where Plessy was arrested in 1892 for breaking a Louisiana law requiring Black people to ride in cars that the law described as “equal but separate” from those for white customers. The date is close to the 125th anniversary of Plessy’s guilty plea in New Orleans.

It was a relatively mild day for early January here, and I had hung the flag outside in anticipation of the formal tallying of the electoral votes. I knew little of the upcoming rally and expected that, like most Trump rallies in those later days, it would just be a handful of people with stupid signs that we would make fun of and then it’d dissipate. I was woefully unprepared for what happened. I think I was online here when shit started going down and I turned on the news. As events unfolded, I wandered outside and took down my flag.

Most days, I barely have enough intelligence to keep myself alive. I don’t trust any computer to be as smart as I am. And that’s before I get into security.

Paranoia is heightened awareness.

Kind of like worrying about what’s in a vaccine?

As much as the still image looks crude (I’ll watch the video at home), there are a few places where VR will be better than the web, but I don’t think walking down the aisles of a virtual Walmart make much sense. Why not take advantage of the fact that you don’t need to think two dimensionally?

As for the concerns, I’m not important enough for them to want to track me.

I have a Ring doorbell. I might contemplate smart lights. I will NOT:

2) Connect any (supposedly) smart appliance to the Internet.

I have a Ring. The thermostats that just got installed with my new AC unit could be hooked up to the internet, but I won’t. I will never, no matter how much automation I put in, install an electric door lock.

I would consider closed-system automation but not any Internet-based “conveniences”.

When we drive to NY, Zedushka loves to visit the Walmart in Clarion, PA, the Wegman’s in Wilkes-Barre, and the Wawa in Stroudsburg.

The Wawa is the best place for coffee, and we go to the other stores to buy Utz “extra dark” pretzels which can’t be found in Michigan.

I don’t need to worry about what’s in a vaccine, the manufacturers and state/federal agencies have explained it in detail.

I am just as unimportant (not so worried about being tracked — I avoid it if I can, on general principles), but that hasn’t saved any of the people caught in the crossfire at drive-by shootings, or in the crowd for the random ones. As dopefish says, many “smart” appliances can kill you.

Also, walking through the store to pick up your stuff adds steps to your daily count. Much less boring than a treadmill.

Yes, Utz pretzels are great. Their fried dill pickle chips are surprisingly good also.

What’s the draw for the Clarion Walmart?

I grew up about 45 minutes from Clarion. When I was a junior in high school, I attended what would today be called a STEM camp at Clarion University. Part of the program was an elective. I took photography and spent some time walking around campus taking pictures. I ended up in a gym where a couple of guys were shooting hoops. Those photos my still be in the attic at my parent’s house.

I was in marching band in high school. Every year we would march and compete in the parade for the Autumn Leaf Festival in Clarion. That was always a great time.
