Bruce Hornsby Reframes “The End of the Innocence”

A beautiful re-design of this classic song, with some key changes in the lyrics and a major shout-out to Keith Jarrett.

Number 2 in our presentation is “The End Of The Innocence” which Bruce and Don Henley co-wrote, co-produced and performed for Don’s third solo studio album of the same name in 1989. Also featured in this performance is Bruce’s first instrumental “Song A” and a piece from Keith Jarrett’s Sun Bear Concerts, untitled (at least as far as we know).

There aren’t any definitive or thorough studies on this subject — just a multitude of articles from sources with various degrees of credibility and knowledge of actual details of the events. The teachers are not likely to be well versed in the subject especially when the information is rapidly changing on a daily basis. Given the current battles over what should be taught about struggles of the past two centuries, you are putting teachers in firing line over history that has not been written. I am not a teacher but maybe some who are here, especially those with backgrounds in history, might have suggestions.

I wrote this on the morning of January 7th last year. I sent this message to the school Principal, Assistant Principal, and the rest of the Social Studies Department. Behind the button as to not make the page too long:

Dragonomics  Jan 5, 2022 • 8:14:59pm

There was a drinking age/drunk driving argument last thread. This is my solution. We need a drinking license. Drinking is the problem. Not driving. If a person drives drunk, then take away their drinking license. Without a drinking license, it’s like you’re under 21. You can’t get into bars, order a drink at a restaurant or ball game or buy beer at the store. You can absolutely ask a responsible citizen to buy for you, but I would hope that ask comes with intense shame.

Back in the 90s my three younger kids all got Houston metro fare cards and learned how to get around using the citywide bus system. To this day, we’re still hearing stories about all the places they went. We had no idea at the time.

That was from PayPal - I don’t control that. I got a notice too that your subscription was canceled because automatic payments failed - nothing more than that. PayPal seems to be acting flaky with subscriptions lately. You may need to just re-subscribe, because I don’t think there’s anything I can do about it.

This has become an article of faith among the anti-vaxxers, that most (if not all) of the rise in infections are due to breakthroughs among the vaccinated. That the unvaccinated are at greatest risk of being infected by the vaccinated. And that the vaccinated are more likely to die than the unvaccinated who have “strong” immune systems.

We complain about the subway endlessly — the smell, the filth, the guy masturbating at the other end of the car… but EVERYBODY uses it. Even if you have all the money in the world, it’s just so much faster during rush hour than any street vehicle could ever be.

You ain’t kidding. There’s a bus line in front of my development that I’ve taken to Philly by way of Camden on occasion. The fucking looks of legitimate horror I’ve gotten from white people when I say I’ve done that is simultaneously hilarious and infuriating.

The first part of that may be true in very highly vaccinated places. 2x mRNA+booster is ‘only’ 70% effective at preventing omicron infection. So in a place that’s 90% vaccinated, most omicron cases could very well be among the vaccinated.

The rest of it is nonsense, of course.

My dad grew up in Philly and took the Broad Street Line to school until my grandparents moved to the Jersey burbs. After that, he only took public transit if it was absolutely necessary. I know he did the subway in NYC a few times for business trips, but I never once personally saw him ever step foot in any sort of mass transit.

The other problems among the GOP are that (1) mandates are wrong since they take away individual choice — “I choose to be vaccinated but it’s a matter of personal choice”, (2) if you’re vaccinated, you shouldn’t have to wear a mask, (3) vaccines are only needed for those who are elderly or have serious comorbidities; others, especially children, don’t need them since dangers associated with vaccines outweigh benefits, (4) masks are bad for children since they interfere with appropriate childhood development, and (5) I only believe in traditional vaccines that use dead viruses, not these new fangled vaccines that are based on unproven technologies.

I got called in on my day off, and I worked at the front counter, rather than the usual dishwasher. Much easier. I had to ask a guy to put on a mask, even if he was just looking. He wouldn’t take one, but apologized and went to fetch his, a nice one with fishies on it. He apologized again after he got his piece of pie, and I told him my ‘just a couple more years and it will be automatic’ joke. I think I heard sort of a chuckle/moan. It’s hard to tell with a mask on.

More public transit will solve several problems.

I read through all that discussion of drinking age compared to ages for other things (like voting or military service), including the various slippery slope arguments (why don’t you ban all alcohol then).

Politics is always the art of the possible. We can hope people will be responsible when they drink, and not drive afterwards, and we can definitely show that teenagers are at a higher risk of drinking and driving, or that rural areas have more deaths per capita than cities (combination of higher speeds, further distances, lack of public transportation, &c).

You can use slippery slope arguments in either direction, but at the end of the day, someone writes a law.

Nebraska used to have marriage laws that allowed boys to marry at 17 and girls at 19 without parental consent. After that was challenged as sexist age discrimination, a couple years ago the state changed the law so no one can marry until 19 without parental consent (minimum age 17 for everyone).

But who’s to say if a person at 16 years and eleven months won’t be more responsible than someone at nineteen? The slippery slope arguments argue there should be no line for drinking (or marriage age).

The same arguments apply to anything we have an age for which is not explicit in the constitution (voting, holding office, &c). Why do we have an age limit on gun ownership? On renting cars? On travelling alone?

Very interesting topic(s). It can be expanded at the other end of the age scale. And are ‘emancipation’ (of minors) laws state-by-state?

Yes they vary, both “automatic emancipation” (the age of majority) or court-ordered emancipation.

Even then, court-ordered emancipation is restricted by laws or constitutional requirements (such as serving on a jury or voting).

Some suggestions for what to keep in the car in case of getting stuck. The goal is to be, if not comfortable, at least not in a life threatening situation. Usual suggestions are a some food, some water, a blanket/sleeping bag, a change of warm clothes, a roll of tp, and a small first aid bag. I also keep an _empty_ 2.5 gallon gas can, a headlamp, and an army entrenching tool (folding shovel).

I also have the parts for a bug-out/go/good bag. But have not assembled them yet. Being in the East, I haven’t had much problem (at least yet) with wildfires, earthquakes or just coming on-shore hurricanes.

A couple of years ago a tornado (probably not yet on ground) passed within a short distance of my house. It apparently landed about 1/4 mile away, knocked down two trees (one onto a pickup and the other onto a house, then faded away.

New Hampshire passed (if even possible) an anti-abortion bill more heinous than that in Texas. It was not enough to include transvaginal ultrasounds which are medically unnecessary, it also includes a provision to allow grandparents to sue for adoption of a foetus from an adult woman. There are no provisions for rape or incest. Doctors who fail to carry out the requirements of the law become felons.

Gov. Sununu has always claimed he is “pro-choice” and even did after he signed the law. (All conservatives lie. All of them.)

Right now, roof rakes are hard to find around here. My house has a large, steep cathedral ceiling where there is metal roofing material. The snow does build up on it but the snow falls off frequently. Shakes the whole house. My back porch has about 4 feet of ice and snow that has fallen off the roof.

I’ve seen reports where people are requesting $1200 to shovel off a roof. I don’t know if they are getting any takers.

I think it really depends on how much snow is on the roof when the weather warms up a bit and we then get significant rainfall. There’s always going to be buildings that were under built and subject to snow collapse.

Check youtube for videos from Valdez Alaska where roofs have over 10 feet of snow on them. There’s a few videos of people using their snowblowers to remove roof top snow.

He actually takes the “Republicans have no agency” fallacy and makes it a political statement.

First, it is not my bill,” Sununu said at a forum in June. “It is the Legislature’s proposal. And 43 other states have similar clauses, including Massachusetts and New York, who have almost the exact same law. No one is screaming at them. Do you want me to scrap a $13 billion budget for this one item? I will not do that.”

Narrator: Massachusetts and New York have no such provisions. Like all conservatives, he’s a liar. He also signed it, so it’s his bill.

He also said the ultrasound/grandparents provision was only added at the last minute, for varying values of “May 2020.”

34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

“Hate speech” for quoting the words of Jesus in the Bible, and the history of Christianity (I did not say all Christians).

Atheists do not believe the same about political positions, nor do Christians.

State Senator Slama was specifically appointed to a vacant seat by our Roman Catholic governor to introduce Roman Catholic legislation regarding abortion in this state. She has faithfully delivered.

There’s such a vast difference between what Christ taught and believed and what his followers think and believe. My husband’s family is religious (he and I are both atheists) and his family are kind, solid humans. Many Christians of today are not. I will never attack someone for their beliefs but I would be lying if I didn’t say how much I hate people who have taken good words, thoughts and deeds and turned them into something completely unrecognizable.

As for Anymouse, after what he experienced in real life, I would be hard pressed to not hate everyone. He lives a more Christ like life than most supposed Christians. What passes for Christianity anywhere in the world today has little to do with the words attributed to the Millennialist Judean prophet and preacher, Yeshua bin Yussuf as passed down to us by his followers and inheritors. Mostly Christianity has become a cult focussed on death and the supposed afterlife, not doing good deeds in this life as was Yeshua’s supposed prescription to the world in the name of his Father.

re: #118 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

There’s such a vast difference between what Christ taught and believed and what his followers think and believe. My husband’s family is religious (he and I are both atheists) and his family are kind, solid humans. Many Christians of today are not. I will never attack someone for their beliefs but I would be lying if I didn’t say how much I hate people who have taken good words, thoughts and deeds and turned them into something completely unrecognizable.

As for Anymouse, after what he experienced in real life, I would be hard pressed to not hate everyone. He lives a more Christ like life than most supposed Christians. That said, Anymouse, I love you and think the world of you, but bashing good people’s (the people here) beliefs isn’t helpful in any way.

yeah, he went way over the top, and then suddenly realized calling somebody an anti-semite was potentially legally hazardous. I personally didn’t see anything particularly Jewish about the bankers. I frankly thought if anything they were probably supposed to be a parody of tight-fisted but thoroughly fiscally honest Dutch bankers, who’d been keeping Harry’s money safe in their vaults all this time. In reality, it was an idiotic banking system. Having a bunch of gold coins and chandeliers in a vault isn’t particularly savvy. I would have wanted to see a trunk full of inflation-indexed bonds and lots of stock certificates. Some gold, not as a hedge, which it really isn’t, but just in case all currencies default or something, always good to have something people have recognized as money for 10,000 years.

Hospitalizations are steeply rising, mostly in people unvaccinated (thru 12/20)

FWIW, when you comment on people who call the 2021-01-06 attempted coup a riot or unrest, point out that in most countries in Western Europe, what happened on that day is by legal definition an attempted coup d’etat, and that any service members (military or civilian) who’ve sworn their service oaths would most likely be facing charges of treason or high treason, where the penalties are in the range of 15 years imprisonment to imprisonment for life.

re: #121 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Well, that’s just fucking awesome.

OK, I just posted about child sexual abuse, and I have two things to say about this:

1) What percentage of people were sexually abused as children? RAINN says it’s 1 in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys. I’m going to state I believe those numbers are far higher.

rainn.org

In fact, I think in some American subcultures, sexual abuse is rampant, because of attitudes surrounding children, e.g., that they are parental property, that girls are less valuable than boys, and it’s just ok to sexually assault the weaker and less regarded.

2) It’s entirely possible that the two jurors did not realize they had been sexually abused until they actually heard testimony. I know I did not fully acknowledge I’d been sexually abused as a 9 YO until about 5 years ago, because I’d never really thought about what happened. (That said, my 9 YO self knew something terrible had happened. I wrecked my assaulter’s VW engine by disconnecting all the wiring in the aftermath of the assault. I got in trouble, not him. I couldn’t verbalize why I did what I did.) More recently, I didn’t realize that a vice principal (MR. FLOYD, IF YOU’RE STILL ALIVE 50 YEARS LATER) had compounded a sexual assault by a fellow junior high school student when he asked me intrusive questions about the actual assault, like “how far did he pull down your skirt”?

This is going to be terrible to say, but sexual assault is endemic in our society, we don’t acknowledge it, powerful forces try to cover it up and minimize it, and it’s entirely possible the jurors had no idea until they were in the trial what had happened to them.

re: #215 Teukka

FWIW, when you comment on people who call the 2021-01-06 attempted coup a riot or unrest, point out that in most countries in Western Europe, what happened on that day is by legal definition an attempted coup d’etat, and that any service members (military or civilian) who’ve sworn their service oaths would most likely be facing charges of treason or high treason, where the penalties are in the range of 15 years imprisonment to imprisonment for life.
Usually without any possibility for pardon or parole.

There’s a word in Spanish for what Trump attempted to do, it’s autogolpe. It’s more elegant and has a lot more meaning than just “self-coup.” There’s history behind “autogolpe” too, relatively recent history. In 1992, Alberto Fujimori, then President of Peru, basically took over in a military coup.

en.wikipedia.org

Fujimori was punished—after he “won” a third term in 2000 after an election widely considered to be corrupt, he ended up leaving Peru and ending up in Japan in an “exile.” He ended up coming back to Peru where he was convicted of human rights violations and sent to prison. On December 24, 2017, he was pardoned and allowed to leave prison, but there were massive country-wide protests. This is a tl;dr, but Fujimori is back in prison, and his daughter Keiko ran for office last year with one of her platform planks being that she would pardon her father again. She lost.

en.wikipedia.org

Maybe the future of Trump and Ivanka, but we haven’t gotten there yet, obviously.

Yet, our President did nothing to protect our country and stop the violence. The actions of the President on January 6th were nothing short of reprehensible.”

re: #246 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

QFT. One hundred fucking percent!

And it is less times the monster of our nightmares or stranger danger but someone we know, a family member or friend of.

That’s right, which makes it even more difficult to discuss. I would point to the case of Josh Duggar, who was convicted early in December of receipt and possession of child sexual abuse material. It came out in 2015 that Duggar had sexually assaulted four of his younger sisters and another girl in 2002 and 2003. The awful horrible parents of Josh, Jim Bob and Meech, basically decided their eldest son was MORE IMPORTANT than their four daughters and protected him. While none of the now-adult daughters were brought in to testify about the incident, a (former) family friend, Bobye Holt, testified as to what she knew about Josh’s past sexual behavior, as her daughter was the non-family member that Josh sexually abused. But none of the daughters have actually stated they were sexually assaulted, but a couple of them have made very very very vague allusions. And some have publicly/not so publicly separated themselves out from the clan.

And that’s my point. When sexual abuse occurs, there’s so much pressure to cover it up and pretend it didn’t happen. It’s worse, I think, in families where they hold up their perfect family unit as not just salutary, but exemplary. But we found out that Jim Bob and Meech Duggar were quite willing to sacrifice their much less valuable daughters for the benefit of their golden boy son. And this happens over and over and over and over again. It is TIRESOME.

IT IS EPIDEMIC.

It needs to STOP.

Trump continues projecting like IMAX and claiming that the crimes occurred on November 3.

Yeah, as it was becoming clear that Trump lost, Trump and his goons proceeded to conspire to invalidate the election and engage in election fraud to try and prevent Biden from taking office as legally voted.

From before November 3, Trump made it explicitly clear that he would not accept any election result where he wasn’t declared the winner. The GOP went nearly all-in for Trump on this endeavor, with 68% of the House GOP voting to not certify the results. They had no problem with their own election wins on the same fucking ballots, but found Biden winning to be subject of fraud.

The January 6 insurrection was triggered by Pence’s refusal to capitulate to Trump’s demands to throw out the ballots from the 6 states that tfg was challenging. If Pence had consented, the Peter Navarro scenario may very well have succeeded. But then there would have been other violence — many of the 81 million who voted for Biden would not have taken this coup in silence.
