Video: What if Fox News Treated January 6 Like BLM?

Politics • Views: 16,365

This is perfect. But it’s singing to the choir, I suppose, because Fox News doesn’t care one bit about having their monumental hypocrisy pointed out. Still, it’s perfect.

Youtube is becoming much more aggressive in labeling videos “age restricted”.

Some history youtubers are getting quite upset at this, for if they cover a war, especially WWII with Nazi images, Youtube is age restricting said videos.

I think this boils down to the issue that Youtube never implemented a rating system or content warning label package.

Here’s the problem: Youtube knows that neo-Nazi and violent right wingers lover to propagate and convert. But Youtube will not hire actual humans to sit and watch videos and notice that the content is not a recruitment video but simple reporting.

Yes!
I understand that the actresses were all in their early to mid 60’s at the start of the series. So your perceptions were quite accurate.

I did a little more looking (I’ve never watched either series) and the numbers I am seeing for the characters’ ages are:
Blanche Devereaux - 53
Dorothy Zbornak - 53
Rose Nylund - 55
Sophia Petrillo - 79
(The actress, Estelle Getty, was a year younger than Bea Arthur, who played her daughter.)

Yes, if they wanted it. Even then, however, it gets really difficult if they’re using botnets. But a human moderator could take one look at the content being mass-reported and decide it shouldn’t be restricted no matter how many bots complain.

It sounds like it comes down to deciding whether to prioritize avoiding false positives or false negatives.

Plus of course, the issue that in a diverse country, the concept of ‘malicious’ might not be a uniformly agreed upon concept.

And, finally, there is the issue of the golden rule. Whereby those who have the gold, rule.

Good timing. I’ve just been seeing in a bunch of places this avalanche of “but BLM” and “Kamala set up bail funds for rioters” bs. Invariably, daytime protests turned nasty at night as opportunists took over and riot police went into crowds punching, whipping, and beating anyone they could find. Many of those were in fact peaceful protesters who got kettled. LE compounded the problems. And of course, we know that in some instances agitators like the boogaloo guy and umbrella man were the actual perps. Finally, at least in Chicago, Trump strategized to create mayhem. This whatabout shit is only going to get thicker.

Yes! I agree with you that the methodology is well defined and understood. At least by the gurus that study and implement these systems.

It seems to me that the context and goals of screening for ‘maliciousness’ are the most complex and least agreed upon factors here.

I was thinking of the context for Covid testing. The tests are imperfect.

Does one weight for false positives or false negatives. More false positives in tests used for public access to services might limit peoples’ lives undeservedly. More false negatives would allow sick people to circulate freely, increasing the danger the public.

Which public policy do we select? (This is not directed at Belefon. Who has made an excellent point. It is just a general philosophical question.)

I didn’t copy the whole section, which, in the context of machine learning, has a decent discussion over it. Their example is trying to make a filter for kid friendly shows vs an email filter. You would be ok if the show filter got a few false negatives, but you would rather the email filter have a few false positives.

I’d just like to note again that the Phoenix Police Department tried to get the Black Lives Matters protesters identified as a gang “ACAB” and charged with assisting a criminal street gang. The charges were dropped, but the arrested people are suing the DA (as they should).

An investigation conducted by a national law firm into a criminal case that accused local anti-police brutality protesters of being part of a fictitious gang found that the Phoenix Police Department sidelined its own gang experts from the case and lacked “credible evidence” that the protesters were gang members, a copy of the probe reviewed by Phoenix New Times shows.

Another probe into so-called “challenge coins” that celebrated shooting protesters in the groin that were exchanged among police officers found that “similar items,” including patches, hats, and shirts were frequently exchanged by “dozens of Phoenix police officers.” This investigation found that Phoenix Police Department leadership “failed” to properly investigate the problematic memorabilia.

The police ought to be concerned that their actions are making middle aged white women who live out in Mesa *irate*.

In a tweet, the singer said the 17-year-old “decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example.”

Shane was O’Connor’s son with Irish folk musician Donald Lunny. She revealed that seven days ago he made “two severe suicide attempts” and was being treated at Tallaght University Hospital in Dublin.

Nimoy’s voice changed a lot as he aged. To my ears, it started to become apparent in 1991 with his appearance in “Unification” and THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. By 2009, at age 78, his voice and delivery was really sounding off. If you use audioclips from across the franchise and splice them together, Spock’s voice is not going to sound consistent from line to line.

He was in the episode of Fringe I watched this morning, so I’m very aware that he sounded off in his old age. It was more that he sounded too loud, and a bit hollow, like more time should have been spent tweaking the recording. It’s a kids cartoon on Nickelodeon, so for what it is, they did OK.

Recent posts of cats and guitars have recalled to me an old Japanese saying: “kaze ga fukeba, okeya ga mōkaru” (“when a strong wind blows, the barrel-maker prospers”). When a strong wind blows up dirt and pebbles it blinds some; the blind man makes his living by playing the shamisen (strings made of cat’s intestines); the cat population dwindles; mice proliferate and gnaw on barrels to get at the grain inside; people need to buy more barrels. In economics and in life, cause and effect is not so simple.

My wife just came in and asked if I had anything to add to the laundry load. I said “no.” She asked about my old favorite shirt that now has a tear from the elbow to the cuff that was on the floor. I told her I was willing to concede and that she could turn it into rags. She said, “really?” I said, “you know what, I could just use it as a work shirt.” And she started to say, “but you don’t” and then left the room giggling.

Fair point, but which seems likelier at this point: Fully-vaccinated woman felt so afraid of her child’s illness that she felt the only recourse was to cram them into the trunk? Or unvaccinated wingnut has been so conditioned to view the ill as unpersons that she felt no conflict over forcing her child to ride in the trunk to protect herself?

Not saying it’s impossible for a fully-vaccinated person to feel that the threat of their infected child overrides their basic instincts as a parent, but I strongly suspect that if you’ve got enough sense of mind and concern for others that you got the vaccine, then stuffing your own offspring in the trunk of your car is probably not an option towards the top of your list of how to deal with possible COVID infections.

I actually use this in class to make a point. In the West when you address an envelope (something most of my students have never done) you begin with any necessary honorifics, then personal name and family name; next line residence, street, etc.; then town, city; then zip code; and if necessary, country. In east Asia it’s the opposite: country (if necessary) then region, township, codes, then FAMILY name, and then last personal name with necessary honorifics. It illustrates so much about priorities from East to West. I’m not making a judgement, just explaining. The author of this article is trying to explain something similar about reclaiming her name. It’s met in comments with racism. I hate this place sometimes.

Captain Magic  Jan 8, 2022 • 4:35:48pm

Justice Sotomyor getting reamed in conservative press for quoting wrong statistic about children with COVID:

WASHINGTON (TND) — Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor inaccurately claimed “over 100,000 children” are “in serious condition” due to COVID-19, sparking an outcry from critics accusing the Obama-appointed justice of spreading misinformation.

The comment came during this week’s oral arguments for the Biden administration’s controversial vaccination rule for private employees, which would force businesses with more than 100 employees to place a vaccine mandate on their workers or require them to be tested weekly.

“We have hospitals that are almost at full capacity with people severely ill on ventilators. We have over 100,000 children, which we’ve never had before, in serious condition, many on ventilators,” Justice Sotomayor said.

The CDC’s COVID-19-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network, which covers roughly 10% of the U.S. population, reports only 140 hospitalized children during the most recent reporting week, representing 7.3% of all counted hospitalizations.

More than 4,000 children were hospitalized due to COVID-19 nationwide earlier this week, according to the Washington Post. That figure represents a record for child hospitalization due to COVID-19, but is still a far cry from Justice Sotomayor’s claim.

Justice Sotomayor’s comment drew quick backlash from critics on social media who lambasted the traditionally left-leaning justice for spreading inaccurate information about the state of the pandemic.

PolitiFact, a fact-checking website often accused of political bias, ranked Sotomayor’s comment “false” in a fact-check published on Friday.

Several news networks, including CBS and ABC, have come under fire for allegedly failing to mention Sotomayor’s comments during nightly news coverage Friday evening.

re: #127 Captain Magic

Weird, but they’re not giving Gorsuch the same treatment for lying about flu killing hundreds of thousands.

Why is that?

How many children have been hospitalized as a result of covid19?

It’s not always clear because not all states provide data breakouts. AAP indicates that cumulative total has been about 30,000 for about half the states.

The part that bears watching is that the percentage of children to total hospitalizations is rising, which goes to children increasingly being the ones stricken with covid - often because they’re not able to get vaccinated or families are holding off on vaccinating.

Back in 1986 while I was serving with JTF-Bravo in Honduras my assistant team leader was highly disappointed when he discovered a bicycle reflector was missing from his box of Sugar Smacks. He wrote Kellogg’s a long angry letter about this transgression.
Weeks later a box with a dozen reflectors arrived.
We of course had no bicycles.
And I had swiped the original reflector practically minutes after he opened the box.
