Amazing! Bruce Hornsby Solo: Preacher in the Ring, Part 1/Variation 2 (Webern)/ Catenaires (excerpt)(Carter)

Music • Views: 18,793

YouTube

Selection Three of our series of performances from Bruce’s Nov. 2021 Deep South Solo Tour features an unexpected medley of three disparate pieces that reflect the angst and dissonance of Bruce’s song’s lyrical subject matter. Inspired by Lee Smith’s novel Saving Grace, “Preacher In The Ring, Part One” deals with a visit to a snake-handling congregation in Appalachia, no doubt part of what Greil Marcus pegged as “The Old, Weird America”. The other pieces included are Anton Webern’s Variation 2 and most of Elliott Carter’s Catenaires. This combo is generally considered one of Bruce’s tours de force in the solo context, a mix of boogie piano and modern classical music.

That story about the insurrection-adjacent former Speaker of the Michigan House, who is strongly alleged to have been sexually assaulting his sister-in-law for the last 11 years is just … worse. It’s a long read from a news source that is non-profit and non-partisan.

The two good things I got out of the story is that the sister-in-law is not in Michigan now (hasn’t been for a month) and her personal attorney represented a bunch of the women who were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar, the gymnastics doc who was associated with Michigan State University. And YES, this absolutely is connected.

JJ’s wife, Rachael, is one of the women who first came forward to blow the whistle on Nassar. So yeah, he’d know that there was fuckery in the state legislature.

But in a statement Friday, Lee Chatfield’s lawyer characterized the interactions with “the woman who is now claiming she was raped” as a consensual affair when they were both adults. The lawyer also stated Chatfield had multiple extramarital affairs.

Their affair lasted for years, but they were both consenting adults,” attorney Mary Chartier said of the claims leveled. “Mr. Chatfield deeply regrets the decisions he has made. It has caused great pain to his wife and family, and they are working through this together. But he did not assault this woman in any manner during their years-long adult relationship. He intends to vigorously fight these false claims.”

Yeah, I was JUST telling someone that Mary Chartier ought to be glad I don’t live in Michigan because I would want to CUT A BITCH. The reality is that (a) 16 is the age of consent in Michigan AND AND AND (b) if one party is in a position of authority over the other, that age of consent gets ratcheted up to 18. Mary Chartier has to know that (it took me 3 minutes to find that info) and while I know that every accused is entitled to competent legal counsel, that same counsel is just fucking WRONG to lie about the nature of the relationship.

lawhawk  Jan 8, 2022 • 5:44:43pm

re: #7 mmmirele

Of course his lawyer is claiming the relationship was consensual.

It wasn’t. It was child rape. She wasn’t of age of consent, and she was sexually assaulted - rape.

I’m sick and tired of media sanitizing stories where people are sexually assaulted by others, and they use euphemisms and statements other than rape to describe what it actually was - rape.

It’s also unsurprising that yet another family values GOPer had multiple affairs, was covering up for Nassar, and was involved in sex crimes himself.

Even the county level GOP assholes here decided that maybe it wouldn’t be a fabulous idea to honor insurrectionist traitors in some dumb trump style rally.

MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell has argued that his false claims of massive fraud in the 2020 election have a “scriptural basis” while suing the House Select Committee on January 6 over a subpoena of his phone records

The suit contends that Lindell’s promotion of the false fraud claims were “are motivated, in part, by his strongly held religious beliefs,” noting that Lindell has said there is an unspecified “scriptural basis for” the claims.

Howdy Lizards,

This article was the last straw for me of the bs attacks on President Biden:

It didn’t misrepresent the article, it was about Biden wasting time going to funerals, that is what he has a VP for.

I want to cancel my subscription and they said: Hey, rather than cancel your $80 a year subscription, what if we charge you $9 a year instead?

F*ckers…….I have a $70 credit coming my way, they didn’t win, their attack coverage to “prove balance” is total bs.

So Lizards, if you are a WP subscriber, I know how to save you some money.

Do these people think that vaccines are supposed to keep you from ever getting a virus in your system at all?

Do they think it forms a cloud around you that seeks out viruses before they get to you?

There was a Star Trek TNG episode about people with an engineered immune system like that. It went very badly.

Even when the vaccine is working at “100%” if enough virions enter your system they can overwhelm any immunity you have from vaccines. I’ve gotten my MMR vaccination two extra times as an adult than I needed to due to paperwork problems, I still don’t go anywhere that California Anti-vax soccer moms caused a measles outbreak while it’s happening. Two lesbians, three cats, one Vitamix in a box. The cats have claimed the Vitamix since December 16. They are not giving up.

On Black Friday, Jessica and Nikii Gerson-Neeves bought a blender. It was a Vitamix blender, a professional-grade splurge, and the couple was looking forward to a winter of smoothies and soups.

It arrived on Dec. 16 at their home on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Jessica put the hefty box down on the floor in the kitchen, just for a second. Her 4-year-old tuxedo cat, Max, otherwise known as the “sentient soccer ball,” jumped up on the box. Jessica thought it was funny and snapped a photo.

Then Max’s 13-year-old feline siblings, George: Destroyer of Worlds (“sentient potato”) and Lando Calrissian (“the questionably sentient dust bunny,”), demanded their turn on the knee-high box.

That was three weeks ago. Since then, the cats have refused to leave the box, fighting over who gets to perch upon it and taking turns standing guard while the others eat or are busy elsewhere. The blender remains ensconced inside.

Why is Bernie “popular”? Because Bernie is never the deciding vote, he’s rarely the face of a bill, and the only time he gets national attention is when he’s running for the presidency. Either they succeed in winning the presidency with Bernie and his perfect socialist utopia springs forth fully formed or Repubs win and proceed to make America such a fascist hellhole that the voters rise up in “revolution” to install a socialist government.

Why did this not happen last year? Because apparently the “revolution” can only happen within the confines of the Dem Party, which cannot happen unless the rules are rigged in their favor as anytime they actually run a fair race they get their asses whipped.

These idiots are just like the 3rd party clowns. Green party has 0 Congressmembers, 0 Senators, 0 Governors, Maybe 1 or 2 mayors, few to no state legislators, but they think they are ready to run in and win a Presidental election. The Bernie Bro left at least has a few of the above and a handful of people in Congress, but if they want a way more progressive presidential candidate that might actually win, they should at least try to make up the majority of the collective left first and not just the 20 or so percent that overlaps heavily with kooks. That’s going to require running more people for lower offices and winning over people with their message. Them not doing this isn’t a conspiracy.

Greens and Progressives only seem able to win under two circumstances: Running unopposed or running against an unpopular Dem nominee. When they’re actually in a competitive race with a Dem and Repub nominee, they end up doing no more than siphoning votes away from the Dem and then trying to boast that they managed to “do better than expected” while the Repub is taking the oath of office.

Maybe send him into Jupiter, it will be easier than the Sun anyways. Good luck getting out of there. Here’s a good little video of the problem:

When I was a teenager, I got a really bad cold (it could’ve well been one of the other endemic coronaviruses); my dad boiled grapefruit peels, added some cayenne pepper and a couple other ingredients - I forgot exactly what - and had me drink it.

Tasted awful, as you could well imagine. But it worked. My pops called it “homebrew quinine”, and he learned it in the Navy during WWII.

That being said, yeah…..just take the damn vaccine, FFS.

They think what they’ve been told, which is that they have nothing to fear because of their “good genes” or their “strong immune systems” or that “most people never get sick.” Frank in accounting, the one who died last week? Never took care of himself, not like me and my once a month workout routine. Or Paul, the guy in shipping that croaked back before Christmas? Yeah, he was totally overweight, whereas I’m just “hefty.” And Darcy, the one who’s in the hospital right now? If she’d just taken her fistful of vitamin and mineral pills like I’d suggested, she wouldn’t be in this mess.

By the way, I’ve had this cough for days that just isn’t going away. And I’ve been wheezing a bit. Probably just a cold…/////

The Kazakh government isn’t very good at this. To show that the protests are by a bunch of foreign terrorists and/or Western shills, because of course they are, they grabbed this man off the street and beat him until he “confessed.” It turns out he is a well-known Kyrgyz jazz musician, and the government had to say that, um, well, maybe this was a little on the staged side.

Also, one of a powerful Russian oligarch’s Kazakh friends is missing. Mr Big Oligarch isn’t happy. And of course, Russian “peacekeeping” forces are on the ground, authorized to shoot Kazakh citizens without warning.

There seems to be a whole political intrigue behind this as well, where the old dictator (recently head of the security council) may have used the protests as cover to stage a coup against the current asshole, and current asshole managed to fight it off. This explains mysterious gangs arriving and taking over and police conveniently disappearing, and where the Russians are staging.

The Calton weavers were a community of handweavers established in the community of Calton, then in Lanarkshire just outside Glasgow, Scotland in the 18th century.[1] In 1787 the weavers went on strike. Troops opened fire on the demonstrators and six weavers were killed.[2] In the early 19th century, many of the weavers emigrated to Canada, settling in Carleton Place and other communities in eastern Ontario, where they continued their trade.[3]

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re expecting freezing rain this afternoon, and I’m not looking forward to that. Well, I am staying put, so that’s not that much of a damper on things. It’s not like I have anywhere to go, since I’m not going to knowingly go out for random items or travel anywhere for sake of travel during covid. Too much to lose, even with kn95 masking and up to date on vaccinations.

Most folks in supermarkets I’ve gone to are fully masking as well, so there’s that. Folks around here take covid seriously, mostly because I think so many know people who’ve gotten sick, hospitalized, or died from covid. It’s personal.

Far too many people still think covid is a hoax or that the latest variant isn’t serious.

For those who are up to date on vaccinations, it might not lead to hospitalization or death, but it’s still nothing to sneeze at. If you’re unvaccinated, you might end up clogging up an ER, ICU ward, or die. Your chances are far higher of dying from being unvaccinated.

And right wing lunatics are still pushing all kinds of conspiracies and making baseless statements about covid. It’s with religious ferocity that they ignore the risk of covid, and think that they can survive covid while doing nothing to protect themselves, their families, or their community.

Fuck ‘em. They’re sociopaths. It’s a church of sociopathy.

Some of you (myself included) have complained about the slow pace of investigations into 1/6.

Well, did you know that the US DC Federal Attorney has only been on the job for 2 months? His nomination and confirmation was stalled by the GOP for nearly 5 months - Biden offered it up in July and he was confirmed in November.

That means he’s only had 2 months to dig into the monumental task - cleaning up the DOJ, prosecuting those involved, and dealing with the most significant and highest ranking officials involved in the 1/6 insurrection.

Read the whole thread:

172
lawhawk  Jan 9, 2022 • 8:15:13am

re: #171 lawhawk

This doesn’t completely absolve Garland’s slow pace of investigations in other jurisdictions, like SDNY/EDNY/EDVA, but DC is where the insurrection took place, and they’re the lead office on that.

This is the largest investigation in DOJ history, and the most overtly political case too, as the GOP and Trumpworld tried to overthrow democracy and install Trump as an unelected leader despite losing election, the EC, and his base is absolutely convinced he won.

Here’s how the Texas Rs are trying to cheat the majority of Texans out of federal money:

[The Texas General Land Office] “…GLO held a funding competition for a $1 billion tranche of the aid, inviting local governments to submit applications that would be scored using criteria the state developed. Houston and Harris County received $0 from the contest, despite suffering more deaths and flooded homes during Harvey than the other eligible counties combined.
A Houston Chronicle investigation revealed that GLO had used criteria on the 105-point scale that discriminated against populous areas, effectively dooming the city and county’s chances of winning. The most problematic, engineers who reviewed the competition said, was a 10-point category that divided the number of residents a project would benefit by the total population of the applying entity.”

“…The newspaper investigation also found that counties with a higher risk of natural disasters, per the state’s own metric, were less likely to receive the disaster mitigation aid.
After rare bipartisan outcry over the snub, [Land Commissioner George P.] Bush said he would seek HUD’s permission to award $750 million to Harris County. Houston, however, would still receive nothing.”

And let’s not even think about how hard he’d get hammered into the ground if he _did_ get the nomination somehow. Faux would have a field day tying him to every communist dictatorship ever, his rape fiction and theft of electricity when he first moved to Vermont.

I’ve said it elsewhere but, in many ways, Bernie is the Genocidal GOP’s Wet Dream of a socialist candidate. AOC, on the other hand…

Since AOC came on the scene, I’ve felt that she has better political instincts than Bernie. She put in the work to organize and win her campaigns. And, I think she’s still young enough and smart enough to learn from her missteps.

Dunno about *that*, but when looking up his name to see if I could find said house (TYVM Maricopa County Tax Assessor), I came across this article:

Cyber Ninjas chief wants to start new firm with same workers

PHOENIX (AP) - The Donald Trump supporter hired to run a review of the 2020 election in Arizona told the state Senate president he’s starting a new company with some of the same employees as Cyber Ninjas, the old firm he’s closing as it faces massive court fines for refusing to release public records.

Cyber Ninjas founder Doug Logan told Republican Senate President Karen Fann in text messages that he was unable to sell the firm because of “too much negativity around the name,” but he plans to sell off all its assets to pay debts and eventually file for bankruptcy. His lawyer says Logan can’t fulfill a court order to release public records because the company has no money, even though Trump allies raised millions of dollars for the unprecedented partisan election review.

Logan did not say whether his new firm would do essentially the same work as Cyber Ninjas, but he said his efforts have been running into obstacles. He told The Associated Press he’s not trying to circumvent the court fines and public records orders, but he needs to work.

“If Cyber Ninjas goes out-of-business I either need to get a job with someone else (which was considered), or start from scratch with a new company,” Logan wrote in an email to the AP. “The latter is the route I chose to go.”

fox10phoenix.com

And now that I have his name (Doug Logan), off to check the tax rolls…

ETA: I can’t get at this story, but the house in question may not be in Arizona.

Perhaps there’s no problem from a corporate standpoint since they’ve filled bankruptcy (assuming they did file bankruptcy) but criminal issues remain a long as the statute of limitations are in effect.

So I’m watching the Eagles-Cowboys sports ball competition last night and the first half ends with the Cowboys going up 30-17 in the last minutes of the second quarter.

Having watched the Eagles most of my life, this one has the stank of a game about to go off the rails, so I switch over to Ken Burns’s country music doc.

This morning, I remember I don’t know how the game ended, so I ask Siri “What was the Eagles’ score?”

Verbatim response: “The Eagles were subjugated by the Cowboys last night, 51-26.”

Siri can’t get my partner’s name right after seven years of use (“It’s LORI. L-O-R-I!!! Not ‘Laurie’ you fucking idiot!”), but it’s got the “Humiliate the Eagles fans at all costs” tip down cold.

One of my (ex-boy)friends has been going on about sheets this week. He (like another ex-boy)friend buys things in bulk when he finds something he likes, and in this case, it was a particular model of sheets from the more or less now defunct Kmart. He broke out the last package last week. Today he asked if someone sold fitted bottom sheets because he was wearing through the bottom sheets (and yes, I’ve had that happen to me) but had perfectly good top sheets. Which, btw, aren’t big enough to be repurposed as bottom sheets. (This is true, give it a try.) So he got a number of suggestions. But I sent along that pic about “man sheets” as a tease.

Engineer joke:

A soldier, a priest and an engineer are captured in war and about to be executed by guillotine. The enemy commander asks the soldier if he wishes to face up or down.
“I don’t want to see it coming, so I’ll face down”, he replies.
He’s put in the guillotine, the blade is released…and suddenly stops inches from his neck. The enemy believes this is a sign and lets him go.
Next, the priest decides he wants to face up, “So I can gaze at heaven as I die.”
The priest is put in the guillotine, and again the blade is released…and suddenly stops inches from his neck. The enemy believes this is another sign and lets him go.
Lastly the engineer is brought before the commander and given the choice to face up or down.
The engineer flips a coin and decides to face up.
He is placed in the guillotine. The enemy soldiers prepare to drop the blade. Suddenly, the engineer shouts out, “Wait, wait…I think I see where it’s getting stuck.

She sheds insane amounts and her nails have been known to shred things if she gets house zoomies. They work pretty well for this purpose. Amazon has them for 36 bucks for 6 which is cheaper than Walmart or Target. You don’t have to buy sets, it’s just more convenient and that’s why it’s mostly what you see. I’d just be happy to find 100 percent cotton sheets that weren’t more than a car payment.

I am still wrapping my head around Sheets for Men. How are they different than, well, sheets? This also reminds me of all the “tactical” crap marketed as more manly dipshittery. Sunglasses, flashlights, razors and beard trimmers, etc. It’s the same ploys used to market shit to women, just different colors of things and manly muscular mens being all manly. Everything is black, gray or some version of camouflage or army green.

Humans are fucking weird and stupid.
