I tried to place an Amazon Fresh order this morning. When I tried to check out, it told me no deliveries are available. It offers slots for the current day and the following day. I wonder if their grocery delivery workforce is out sick with Omicron.

Before The DaVinci Code, there was The Omen (not the unnecessary remake from 2006, mind you). The screenwriter, David Seltzer, unintentionally helped popularize what had been, up to that time, the fringe concept of premillenial dispensationalism. He borrowed a few ideas from that, a heaping helping of made-up “quotes” from the Book of Revelation, a little bit of fundamentalist Protestant conspiracy theories regarding Catholics and pretty much straight-up invented the idea of the Antichrist being the literal son of Satan (an idea that’s still very prevalent to this day). The Omen also popularized 666 as the “number of the Beast”…there’s a reason that’s explicitly mentioned in the script, as many audience members wouldn’t have been all that familiar with that notion in the mid-1970s.

All propelled by a great score from Jerry Goldsmith. IIRC, he won an Oscar for it.

Crazy that a theological belief is based on a 70’s horror movie.

catholic doctrine includes an enormous amount of made-up bullshit that it’s picked up over the years: 1) priests can’t marry. “It’s biblical.” No it’s not. 2)Mary Magdalene was a reformed whore. Nope. Nothing suggesting that. 3)Suicides go to hell. The sin is not forgiveable. What a load of horseshit. 4) Abortion is murder. Nope. Not in the bible. 5) Homosexuals are unredeemable pervs. Nope. Not biblical.

The Omen is nowadays considered something of a classic in the supernatural horror genre (Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist are both much better examples, IMO) but the film’s legacy has been much more profound than people might think, particularly its influence at that weird intersection of pop culture and Christian eschatology.

So Durst likely died, either directly or indirectly, from the COVID he acquired in prison. His death is of no loss to the world, but it is troubling that prisons continue to be unable to control the spread of the disease, given they’ve been aware of this problem since the pandemic first struck.

Anecdotal evidence to be sure, but I have to say I like the still pandemic impacted economy under President Biden better than the economy under Trump. When Covid hit, I listened to my wife in the next room holding three way calls with her employees and someone from HR as she furloughed, then laid off, dozens of people every week.

Lately, she’s been ramping up for reopening at several client sites, and hiring executive chefs and general managers…these conversations are far more pleasant to hear happening in the next room…even though I only hear her side of it.

re: #201 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

I take 50 mg spironolactone 2X daily to suppress testosterone. My Endo was hesitant about that high of a dose as spiro is primarily used to treat high blood pressure and I also take 40 mg Lisinopril once daily. Spiro is also a f-ing diuretic so I am always going to the bathroom because of the amount of water I drink to counteract that. Which in turn messes with my sodium level. Toss in the Estradiol (increased risk of blood clots) and HRT can be a bit of a challenge at times. But it’s better than being dead.

That’s a lot of body chemistry to have to keep track of; kudos & respect for you figuring out how to navigate it all.

Meanwhile, the dimwits thinking that taking hormone therapy to sidestep the effects of the ‘rona are probably not going to start to transition, but then again, who knows? All we need is for Joe Rogan to start yapping about this, and maybe millions of angry right-wing choads suddenly have to start re-thinking their policies on public bathroom usage?

Gotta admit, there’s a part of me that wonders if the protests in Kazakhstan are maybe just a teensy bit sparked by the CIA to open up a “Second Front” for Russia and make them have to worry & divert forces from Ukraine.

If the CIA was actually that smart & able, we’d have a helluva lot less problems with Putin & Xi, so probably not.

Also: Kazakhs really REALLY hate the Russians. I’ve been there; talked with the locals who all talked about how they were bullied as children for speaking anything other than Russian, eating their own foods, having their own culture, etc.

They need teachers as babysitters, if nothing else. An unintended consequence of doing what they’re doing is to cause all the workers they want to force back to their stations to stay home to take care of their children.

Also, the blue states, who aren’t doing this shit, would be able to alleviate their own shortages and maintain quality education.
