That doesn’t even come close to covering what CRT is trying to teach. I wonder which conservative asshole snuck that one in.

Biden just said we should get rid of the filibuster.

Okay so say the filibuster goes away. Then the GOP gets both houses someday. Maybe sooner than we hope. Then what?

Then the majority rules. Look, I’m just going to say it: I understand the risk posed by the GOP, but subverting the will of the majority is not healthy for our democracy. It’s what the GOP is doing in the states, and it’s what the filibuster does for the Senate. Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.

We live with it.

Given how McConnell managed to bypass it when he wanted to it was obviously being a more effective tool for Republican obstruction than allowing legislation to be slowed for proper review and consideration.

Out of curiosity, what have been the primary times Democrats have used the filibuster over the last 40-50 years?

devils advocate:

Okay so say the filibuster stays, either in it’s current form or returns to jimmy stewart-style talking. Then the GOP gets both houses someday. Maybe sooner than we hope. And the R’s want to do something.

Mitch, if he’s still alive and in charge, or his successor, declares yet another a carveout.
They steamroll it through and they get what they want.

when both sides dont acknowledge and play by the same rules the filibuster is meaningless

Then they get to pass legislation, and defend it at the next election. That is how democracies are supposed to work.

It is waaaaaay harder to undo something once people realize the benefits of legislation. See e.g., efforts to repeal Obamacare.

That doesn’t matter. If there’s anything the GOP really wants to do with a simple majority (that can’t be done in reconciliation), they will kill the filibuster to get it done.

The Senate is grossly anti-democratic even without the filibuster. With the filibuster it is completely intolerable.

The only thing that kept McConnell from changing the rules was he doesn’t want to govern.

That was very close. It was only because McCain was dying and hated Trump that the ACA survived. If McConnell had any hint about McCain’s vote, Susan “I am concerned” Collins would have voted to repeal it.

Then they have to put their money where their rhetoric is. If they pass something, it goes into effect and their constituents will live with the consequences. That’s what happens im every other democracy and they manage to survive.
